I have mixed feelings about CHICHA San Chen. On the one hand, their drinks are good, but I feel that they are way overpriced. My order this time was Cassia Black Tea with Honey ($7.25) and Lemon Condensed Milk ($7.75). These are regular sizes and not even large. For $7, I expect at least a larger size for how basic these drinks are. Even though they taste good, I don't think it's worth it. I am taking into consideration that prices everywhere have gone up, but CHICHA has always been pricey even before the price hike and I am hesitant to return due to the cost. Personal favorite is the dong ding tea and dong ding tea with fresh milk. I like the perfect amount of sweetness and light ice and just as it sounds, it's perfect. Not too sweet, and just the right amount to get the tea flavor and not sugary or watered down. Even the "latte", it's not overly milky and tea comes through. Their rotating series are usually pretty good as well. We like the peach series I do miss the taro series though, hoping it comes back soon as it's usually one of my favorites For toppings, their boba is good, right amount of chewiness, but only get it if you plan to drink right away. I really like Oolong tea so for me to have it with a cheese foam was quite interesting. Reminded me of Happy Lemon though I think this place does it slightly better. The staff is friendly and efficient, making sure orders are made exactly to your preference. English isn't as good but they do try. The interior is modern and clean, with comfortable seating that creates a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, perfect for catching up with friends which is what I did. There is no Michelin boba (despite what some influencers may be telling you) but Chicha did win many awards, including the Highest International Authority iTQi certification for quality which I guess is where this catchy phrase came from since people falsely equate it to Michelin stars. So now that we got that out of the way, let's actually talk about the tea. Chicha San Chen is originally from Taiwan with decades of experience and is now opening stores all over North America. Their focus is on freshly brewed tea for each order, using their super fancy machines (and what l've noticed as a bottleneck of their production capacity and speed, leading to the long lines). They try to redefine the experience by focusing on elevating every step of the tea making progress, both from an execution standpoint and their brewing, as well as, the quality of the ingredients. It's all very artisanal and aesthetically pleasing. Because they focus so much on sourcing and quality of the tea leaves, they do have somewhat limited options. It's quality over quantity here. But trust me, the options they do have are worth it. Everything down to the cute handles for the cups is focused on providing with a curated experience that differentiates itself from most tea spore, including many of the premium boba places around. Depending on when you go, there may be long lines or no lines at all. Bottom line, even if you remove the ridiculous Michelin claim, Chicha delivers on highly elevated yet easily approachable high quality and hand crafted tea experience. It's pricey.
