Review is for Catering Chichen Itza is one of my go- to places for catering. Their services range from delivered food in the standard tin trays to the full catering service. The owner, Gilberto, is incredible accommodating and their new online order system is a much more organized way to get menu suggestions and place orders. If Gilberto likes you enough, he will send a cook over who will prepare the food onsite. As for the food, its pretty fantastic. There is nothing on their menu that I haven't tried. The standout tapas item is the panucho. Everything is so delicious, the cochinita pibil is much better than any other places I have tried (I'm looking at you Susan Finegar). The rice is the weakest part of their menu. The best part of ordering large amounts from catering is that you get bottles of their habanero sauce, which is to die for. Their catering continues to be the best deal I've seen in LA for both flavor and price. read more

Cochinita Pibil. Just order it and let your mouth experience bliss. There's a reason this place was featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. This place is really THAT good for all things Yucatán. All plates will set you back roughly $10, but these portions are huge so you'll definitely feel satisfied afterward. Oh and also, be aware that the pepper on your plate is a habanero. As good as the hype. Got a groupon and wandered here with my favorite food-venturous friend. Being Bruins, we were a tad skeptical driving into USC territory to get some good eats, but we said yelp couldn't be lying. And it wasn't! Located in a building that could look like a commercial warehouse called Mercado La Paloma, this unexpected treasure is deep in the back, and serves up mean plates of Yucatan food. Think food court meets cultural center, and that's the vibe of this place. Don't get me wrong, it's done up VERY cute, with each food stall having their own decorations for their area. Chichen Itza's had paper lantern lights, bright table clothes with fruits and colors, and very Mexi-tropical feeling vibes all around. The service is great, and everyone is so nice. The food, though, steals the show! Started off our meal with the Panuchos, which are something like a Mexican sope, a fried tortilla (this time one of masa), topped with meats, tomato, avocado, pickled onions, and delicious stuff. Pick it up and eat it, the flavors do some crazy mixing in your mouth and make it the bomb.com. Second, we had the Cochinita Pibil (shredded pork), which was in its own broth of meat juices, on a banana leaf. Great touch. And SO delicious. came with a package of three fresh tortillas for each person, and rice and black beans to share. OMG the flavors in this dish are so unexpected, so savory, so delicious. Finally, we had the Poc Chuc, which is a perfectly seasoned and grilled piece of pork, with tomato sauce on top and a great black bean puree. It was light, tasty, perfect. For drinks, I had the horchata, which was pretty dang good, and the Aguas de Chaya (a green minty drink, which was refreshing and delicious. Kinda taste like what happens when you juice a piece of watermelon rind). Loved this place, and cannot wait to come back. I can't believe I went to USC and basically ignored the Mercado La Paloma- even though it's right off the 110 exit on Exposition. In the last 4-5 years, I've probably eaten there maybe 2-3 times. I've been missing out! Chichen Itza is another excellent restaurant located in the Mercado La Paloma. Specializing in Yucatecan cuisine, the food is flavorful and SPICY! Under my friend's direction, I had the Salbutes (tostada-like dish with shredded turkey, tomatoes, onion, and avocado) and the Cochinita Pibil (pulled pork in banana leaf), which was served with black beans, rice, and tortillas. The Cochinita Pibil was like a Mexican take on kalua pork- you really taste the seasonings and the aroma the pork gets from steaming in the banana leaf. To wash it all down, we had a refreshing guava juice, among the many imported and homemade beverages Chichen Itza offers. With everything at Chichen Itza, you got to have it with hot sauce. Be warned: that habanero sauce they have is POTENT! They serve your meal with a reddish-orange sauce and an even spicier mustard-colored mixture. If you can't handle really spicy, go for the reddish-orange sauce... but for most people even that one is super hot! For dessert, we had coffee (which had a hint of cinnamon) and tried the bread pudding and the flan. The flan was good, but the bread pudding had an odd consistency- the closest thing I could think of is that dried tofu steeped in sauce that Chinese people eat with their morning porridge, except it was sweet and cinnamon-y... Probably won't order that again. I personally prefer the flavors of Mo-Chica a little better, but if Mo-Chica ain't open, Chichen Itza is a great alternative. If you are a spicy food connoisseur, make sure you buy a bottle of their habanero sauce on the way out! read more

Chicken Itza definitely satisfies my Spanish food cravings! The service is pleasant and friendly, and for the portion and quality of their food, the prices are not bad. The Papadzules is a healthy and yummy dish packed full of different flavors that blend harmoniously together. The ground roasted pumpkin seed and epazote sauce adds a creamy element to the tangy tomato sauce they pour over the hard boiled eggs wrapped in corn tortillas. The Tikin-xic is a dish that consists of an extremely fluffy and delicious basa filet marinated with lime juice and achiote on top of perfectly cooked rice. It's one of the best fish dishes I've had in a while. They serve a light and fresh citrus and jicama salad on the side that really balances the rich and savory flavors of the main dishes. read more

One of the most memorable food experiences we've had in a looonggg time. My husband thinks the last time we felt this way about a restaurant was after we had Pa Ord for the first time several years ago, when they used to be less sheisty with their portions. What was good? As my brother who recommended Chichen Itza said, "Everything." I personally loved the chicharon tacos. Ordered the fish which wasn't bad at all. But, would really be coming back for the chicharon tacos and the panuchos. Cochinita pibil was as good as everyone has been raving, but we all agreed it's too much of a good thing. Meaning, it's a huge dish that's better shared. Will be back soon. Like tomorrow. Will be sure to tell everyone about it. And try everything on the menu. Bonus: It's in a really cute marketplace. We absolutely love the food and drinks here and the owner is a very nice man. I may not see him often but he always recognizes me and is super sweet. Let's talk food...my FAV's!! Appetizer: Codzito 3.99 Five mini crispy taquitos (nothing inside) served with a light tomato sauce and a springling of "Queso de Bola" aged baby Edam Cheese. Entree: Bistec a la Yucateca 10.99 Thinly pounded Angus New York strip steak (6 oz), carmelized onions, rice, black bean puree, fried potato slices, fried plantain & corn tortillas. Dessert: Queso Napolitano 2.99 Dense vanilla flan with traditional caramel sauce. Drink: Guanabana $1.99 BEST DRINK EVER!!!!!!!!!! I can't get enough of this stuff. I LOVE spicy so I say BRING ON the HABANERO! I may regret it later while I'm scratching the bathroom walls but it's worth it...I'm a FIERY LATINA!! Probably the longest line at Mercado La Paloma, but it moves along pretty quickly. I wasn't too hungry and I wanted to try the COCHINITA PIBIL here so I got the tacos instead of the plate. But...it was not as 'light' as I thought. There were two per order and the tacos were piled with a lot of shredded pork. Good, but don't think it's my favorite cochinita pibil in Los Angeles. I've had pibil before and knew that I liked it, but eating the dish here was almost a transcendent experience. The Cochinita Pibil seems to be the fan favorite here, but I like the Poc Chuc. Thin slices of pork marinate for hours in achiote and sour orange. They're grilled over an open flame and served with warm corn tortillas, pickled onions, avocado, and a velvety black bean puree. The result is a strata of flavors that's both familiar and exotic. I was happy to find that the Panucho, a traditional street food that closely resembles the taco, is made properly with turkey, rather than with chicken. And that you can actually taste the fruity notes of habanero in the house hot sauce. If only they served beer... read more

Chichen Itza is one of several kitchens in Mercado La Paloma, the best place to eat near USC. The menu includes some signature Yucatecan dishes - none of which were familiar to me. I asked for a recommendation and was excited to learn that there are a number of vegetarian options on the menu - with and without dairy. After some deliberation, I selected the papadzules entrée with arroz y platanos. The appetizers came out first with Chichen Itza's own habanero sauce. I mixed some in with the rice and was psyched to find it was a total barn burner - hot, flavorful but not sadistic. Papadzules came next and they were a game-changing discovery: corn tortillas wrapped around ground up hardboiled eggs soaking in a thick, savory sauce and covered with pumpkin seeds and a chunky salsa. It's both a blessing and a curse to work so close to El Mercado. I was too busy eating at the old Mo-Chica when it was here to notice Chichen Itza. I guess it's a good thing Mo-Chica left because it allowed me to discover the amazingness that is Chichen Itza. The Tixin-Xic is the best grilled fish you will ever eat. It has this perfect sear that leaves it sort of crispy and smoky on the outside but so soft and flaky on the inside. There is no argument that the fish is perfectly cooked. But it doesn't stop there. It's smothered in an achiote sauce that will make you want to lick your plate clean. Seriously. The second dish you absolutely have to try is anything with cochinita pibil. It's shredded, marinated pork that just melts in your mouth. It reminds me of birria or ropa vieja, but this is spicy. A good spicy that's sweet and juicy at the same time. Phenomenal. read more

A nice little spot in the Mercado la Paloma in South L.A. for breakfast and lunch. They offer several vegetarian and vegan options. Their platanos are especially good. I don't know what they fry them in, but they're always yummy! Huevos Rancheros: 8/10 I like the twist of offering black beans instead of refried pintos, although the rice is a bit plain. The huevos themselves are traditional style; nothing fancy, but they hit the spot. The great thing is the price: $4.25 for the whole plate. That's hard to beat at an "A" rating spot! read more

This is a place located in a cafeteria style building near USC and only casue I didn't want to eat Mo-Chica I came here. I had the Huevos Rancheros cause I was craving breakfast, my friend got the Chicharron tacos and my other friend got the Cochinita Pibil. I didn't try the tacos but the Cochinita was fucking amazing. And so was my dish. They have 2 different types of salsas and OMG i think it's just as good as King Taco's hot sauce. If you can handle spicy, you'll love it. I ate it about 24 hours ago and my stomach is still messed up from it. now that's some great salsa! The green one is better fyi. I don't usually like cafeteria style, but this place didn't make me carry my own food, they brought it out to us. Less work for me! read more

So my friend( Ian ) iron chef in thailand and my former chef in nyc Kittichai came to city and mention to have lunch in LA. So i made a call to my chef-mexican-best friend and told me to go here. We tried the sea bass lancheros( tasty, nice presentation, great texture) the cochinita pibil tacos were just awesome, panuchos was good flavor a little bit grease for my taste, tacos de pulpo( octopus) were good. I had the fish with rice... fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. It came with a refreshing jicama, orange and tangerine salad--delish! Yucatan food is very nuanced, not at all like the Mexican food Angelenos are accustomed to. Friendly service... they patiently answered a million questions regarding my dairy free, gluten free concerns. When I asked whether their tamales are corn only or have some wheat in them, the woman helping me said "They have both... I don't want to lie to you". I've been going through cochinita pibil (achiote-marinated shredded pork with diced red onions) and habanero salsa withdrawal ever since my back to back trip all over the Yucatan area. I was intrigued when this placed offered a Groupon deal, my heart leaped when I read the stellar YELP reviews, and I knew I was in deep, deep trouble after my 1st visit. Even my picky teenage boys adore this restaurant. I highly recommend the Agua de Chaya drink and everything on the menu - yes, it is that good! The cochinita pibil taste just as good as the dishes I've tried in Chichén Itzá, Bacalar and Merida - and the funny thing is that I don't even like pork! My other favorite dish is the Tikin-Xic which is 2 fish filets served on top of rice and also comes with side salad. For appetizers, we're pretty much addicted to the salbutes (shredded turkey on a fluppy corn tortilla). RUN, don't walk to this place! It is definitely deserving of all the stellar reviews. Now, that I've exhausted my Groupons, I just hope they offer a deal again. But deal or no deal, we have been back to this place many, many times and will be coming back for more. read more

This is located in the same mercado as Mo-Chica near USC. Very affordable. We were there on a Sunday night, and while the line was only a few parties long, it took a quite some time to get to the front to put in our order. The Brazo de Reina, a boiled egg tamale, while beautifully plated, was dry and lacking in flavor. The citrus jicama salad was bright and flavorful but the spring mix used does not hold up to the very liquidy dressing and was soaked and mushy at the bottom. However, the real stars lie in the Pibil (pork or chicken) and the Tikin-Xic (a fish fillet dish). All are outstanding and worth going back for. Meat was tender and moist. The sauces were flavorful without being overpowering. They were plated beautifully. Why can't more restaurants at this price point take such care in how meals are presented? My big dilemma is going to the mercado and having to choose between Chichen Itza and Mo-Chica... who would have imagined that two such great restaurants could be located in a small mercado in that area? read more

Super hidden gem in a mall plaza. It is named after a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya civilization in Mexico. This place can get BUSY - the locals know what's up. It's hard to find, you wouldn't spot it from the street. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, unless I was bringing a guest. Definately a place to come when you are in the area though. Tried the following items: Horchata: Slightly grainy texture. Sweet but not too sweet. Perfect cinnamon taste. Frothy on the top. Probably the best horchata I've had. Chicken tacos: Very crispy and well-seasoned. They look and taste like something I would make at home. It's a charbroiled chicken marinated with achiote and sour orange juice served with pickled red onions, rice and black beans. The tortilla is sturdy and doesn't fall apart when you hold it. Really good! Chicharrón Tacos - Teensy tiny pieces of fried pork in a taco. Didn't get down with this one. I could see what they were trying to do, but the overly crunchiness of it made it hard to eat fast. Wasn't super hot when it came out, so I could only taste the grease and not the flavor. Boyfriend said it was better the first time he ordered it. Perhaps I got a bad batch. Don't really care to try it again as there are other tasty looking items on the menu. Also had this pumpkin seed, tomato dip with chips. I don't remember the name... This was good! It doesn't look like much, but is a great little salsa side to get in addition to your main courses. My second visit and the food was wonderful! I had the Pollo Pibil and it came with corn tortillas. It was enough to feed two people. Also the Jamaica was the best I've had in LA... Have you ever been to a restaurant or tried a dish that you absolutely could not stop raving about? One of those unexpected, hole-in-the-wall hidden gems? That even despite your innately selfish intentions of keeping the newly uncovered treasure all to yourself, you instead realize that you can't seem to refrain yourself from sharing the wealth with others? That is exactly how I feel about this restaurant: Chichen Itza. Hidden within the Mercado La Paloma in south Los Angeles, you would never expect to try such authentically prepared food. Although we admittedly had high expectations due to a recommendation that had been given to my friend for us to try it, we were somewhat wary of the place upon first glance. Quite frankly, it seemed like an excessively embellished restaurant you'd stumble upon at a food court. I wasn't sure of exactly what to expect anymore and my friend even started to feel as though we must have come to the wrong place. We then checked, and then triple-checked the address. This place had to be it. So, we continued forth to fulfill our vocation as food lovers - and love the food, we most surely did. Chichen Itza specializes in Yucatecan food, authentic flavors and cuisines of Southeast Mexico. We decided to order several different items off the menu and share everything family-style. The employee working suggested I order Pollo Asado and then I ordered Huevos Rancheros and some horchata* to quench my thirst. My friends ordered a couple orders of the Tamales (both baked and steamed) and some Platano con Crema as our appetizer. The appetizer was, for lack of better word, unique. While I do love fried platanos very much, I was not particularly fond of the cream served along with it. It tasted very much like unwhipped whipping cream that seemed a little heavy as an appetizer. The Pollo Asado was extremely flavorful with its achiote and sour orange juice marinade which compensated for the tough texture of the charbroiled chicken. The huevos rancheros, always a favorite of mine, were cooked to perfection with an amazingly light yet savory and rich sauce. The tamales were succulent and full-flavored especially with the accompanying tomato sauce mixture. It was also enjoyable since we were able to try tamales with different textures from the baked and the steamed ones. Like I said earlier, this place is one to rant and rave about to all. If you're ever in the area, a stop here is a must. I can honestly say that this was my favorite restaurant from my 5-day trip to Los Angeles. This place gets a four star for their concept, and their creativity, but in truth it's a 3 star joint in comparison to the rest of the genre. Fresh food, without a question. High quality ingredients. Great Face-man in the Owner/chef? Unfortunately incredibly long food waits, somewhat poor waiter service, and a very redundant and often over-thought menu. The tamales will make you cry if you are used to baja style tamales. I would imagine they use a very fine grind or an additive to achieve such a creamy consistency on the maza, but it gives a gelatinous and poor mouth-feel. The tamales are made with super high quality meat and spices, but the end product just leaves one wondering why it went so wrong. The shredded turkey and avocado starters are reminiscent of a gordita (a real one from mexico, not that bs they sell at tacobell), and was an excellent choice. Again, the freshness is the star. Hot, good textures, high quality ingredients. A pretty good value. The Pibil Conchonita is just meh. Its a roll with pork that has some seasoning on it. there are some lightly pickled onions on it, and its decent. It just isn't anything like the people describe in their reviews of Chichen Itza. Order it if you want a small hot sandwich. Fish tacos are good, but again it's more about high quality ingredients and fresh tasting food, than it is about an incredible food experience. It's good. Just not great. The idea here is awesome. And perhaps I would be a huge fan if I wasn't spoiled by such great Mexican food/central american food, in San Diego. The Chef has a wonderful idea, the freshest ingredients, the best execution (through not reheating, but creating hot to order) and the flavor profiles work. The Habenero sauce is amazing, definitely use some in small quantities to try it out first, then dive in. The waiter was a cock to my gf and my friend until he came around the corner and saw me staring at him. He changed his demeanor and acted pretty sheepishly. Come on man, no reason to be a thug to a 105 lb Asian girl. Go because it's different, the chef is great, the flavors are fresh and the prices are reasonable. Don't go if you are used to a more intensely flavored Baja Mexican style food, because that it is not. This is more of an old world, traditional food style, favoring more raw flavors, less artificial and processed flavors. It's definitely good...but the tamales could use a bit of work. read more

When I visited LA recently, I fell in love with Chichen Itza! I'm from Chicago and I love restaurants that surprise you - in a good way - based the incongruity between the food and the location/decor. I took my broyher and a friend from LA and I could see their faces drop when we got to the neighborhood. These are typical Angelinos who prefer places like Grand Luxe Cafe - you know, style over substance. Anyway, when we walked in, my guests seemed to wonder if we were in the right place. We ordered 3 appetizers: Ceviche - Made with basa and served with tortilla chips, so cool and good Tamal Colada - The corn masa is almost like a mousse - so light Panuchos - Crispy tortillas with delicious toppings like pickled red onions and 3 entrees: Pollo Pibil - My brother ate too quickly to share cause it was so good Pollo Asado - My friend refused to share cause it was so good Bistec a la Yucateca - NY strip steak w/carmelized onions. I wish this had been skirt steak, because it was a little dry. The side dishes served with the steak were rice, black bean puree, fried potato slices, fried plantain & corn tortillas were perfect. I would give Chichen Itza 5*' if it they either served beer or was byob. I called ahead to ask and was told liquor is not allowed in the building. Food this special needs good beer or wine to accompany it, not soft drinbks. I kept thinking I WANT BEER while I was eating. I guess you could get food to go, but it's too good not to eat it while it's hot. Unfortunately, I was leaving LA the next day and couldn't return to try more dishes, but my friend has returned to Chichen Itza 3 times in the past week. read more

Sorry, guys. I've been here a couple of times. The first time was a pretty good experience. This past time was just horrible. We ordered 6 panuchos and the tostadas all came back charred. The char was so strong that the tostadas tasted like burnt charcoal. It was absolutely disgusting. We told one of the workers and she apologized and sent the message back to the cook. Moments later, the cook comes out to deliver the panuchos to my girlfriend (I was in the bathroom at the time) and he made some smartass comment about them always cooking the tostadas that way and to stop complaining. Totally unnecessary. I go back to the table and my girlfriend tells me what happened. I was going to tell the owner of Chichen Itza, since he was right behind our table, but I let it slide. I also noticed that the tostadas were drenched in oil, masking the taste of the tostada. If you guys want some really good Yuca food, head over to SF and visit Poc Chuc on 16th Street. We had the fish tacos, as a quick bite before dinner, and we both were not impressed at all. First off the fish for one was a balanced amount, the second was hardly any fish. I DON'T HAVE TIME, NOR SHOULD THE CUSTOMER BE POINTING MISTAKES, ITS YOUR JOB BEFORE IT HAPPENS. (Sorry I vent this here, as I think this place is actually run VERY professional, so don't take this above comment for this place, but to all placces in general. Its so easy to correct a mistake when its pointed out. The PAYING customer is not any places testing subject. The bad... When you dress a taco, Its much better to put the dressing on the fish, then you can garnish the top of that. Putting it on a torilla doesn't let the flavor break down in the mouth. The main issue...The fish, if you get any in both tacos,would be OK, but its so thick batter you hard to taste the fish. Try a lighter batter, be a bit more giving on the fish, and use the cream sauce on the hottest part of the "bite", on the fish. This would help a lot! The region this food is from is the Yucatan, and Chaya is known to be used in much of the cooking. They had a drink made from Chaya, and since I never had it before, thought I'd try it. It was VERY GOOD, but not extraordinary enough for $3.75 a cup over ice. Better than soda or anything else, but almost $4?! The place looks well run, organized, and the kitchen looked properly functioning. Its the most inviting in the mix of the available places to eat, but I would surely not order the taco's here unless they make the above changes. This place maybe known for other entrees , so perhaps the person at the register could have been more helpful when I said its my first time here. It was just me, there was no line. I wish they had more vegeterrian options, or fish options. Not many people eat meat if they have been informing themselves in the new and the health issues with meats. (we also have to be careful about where and what fish we eat also!). At first I was a little incredulous about this place. Being that I saw it on diners drive-ins and dives. Usually a lot of things on his show can be misleading .I'm so happy that I gave chichen itza a try.Customer service was outstanding Jesus whom was the cashier was very honest with me and gave good recommendations. You can taste that the food here is made with love. In fact the food was so delicious I found myself returning here three days in a row. You've got to admit - 140 or so reviews and not a single one-star rating. That's impressive by my book. Whenever I'm in the area, I make it a point to go to this place. The food has just a good, unique taste that I can't get at many other places. I especially like the cochinita de pibil, which was tender and delicious yesterday. I suppose the one thing I would suggest is for the people who take the orders to be a bit more engaging. They are operating a very unique restaurant and should be ready to answer questions. As someone who has family born and raised in Merida, Yucatan - this place is pretty damn authentic - not to mention delicious!!! If you know anything about Yucateco food then this is gonna be your new spot! And even if you don't, this should still be your spot. It's located inside of a little food court/plaza in LA but you can tell the majority of the people in the plaza are going to Chichen Itza. This place fills up!!! Its open seating so be ready to jump on a table as soon as someone gets up to leave. Guy Fieri has even been here. This place serves amazing food. The citrus jicama salad is excellent, their chicken tacos awesome. The habanero salsa is quite good - it adds a lot of dimension to any hot food on their menu. The only thing keeping this place from 5 stars is the wait. Even on a slow day, they'll strive to make sure you'll miss that 1pm meeting. I appreciate that it's fresh, I just don't understand why it's a minimum of 15-20 minutes for any order. So if you plan ahead, this place will be very enjoyable. read more

I have come here several times and each time I can say I was thoroughly satisfied with the service, food, and presentation. On my most recent visit I ordered the Tikin-Xic which was incredible. The filets were like butter and the sauce was amazing. The citrus salad that was offered prior to the entree was excellent as well and paired great with the fish. What gets me about Chichen Itza is the sheer value of their items. I could have ordered a comparable dish at a fine dining restaurant for three times the price!
