The space looked like a church party room where someone would have their Quinceanera. What a weird place. We ordered the chicken entree and it was small and un life changing. Two little pieces of chicken! Itza Itzy Bitsy! Very unmemorable flavors. It was only 7 bucks so I can't be that upset. We were so hungry we went to the next "booth" and ordered some incredible garlicky Thai food. The other Peruvian restaurant here called Mo Chica looked so much better and more sophisticated. Located on the ground level of a building in "Historic South Central" and set up as a food/store court. Really interesting flavors of mesquite and citrus. My husband and I loved the ceviche. I must say that when I first arrived at the "restaurant," I was a somewhat confused for there were two large security guards guarding an enclosed parking lot belonging to a market. This place is right around the corner from USC, so it had an eerie feeling to it. Oh, and some graffiti. I did not know how to make sense of this. My initial thought was,"WHERE IS THE RESTAURANT?!?!" But the security guards directed us by pointing inside of the Mercado La Paloma (the restaurant is very small and has its own space inside this "market" along with other small businesses). What a great lunch spot! Chichen Itza is located inside Mercado La Paloma off the freeway. The Mercado is like a big giant food court (with offices on the second floor) with many different options to choose from, and CI happens to be one of the places you can order from. I came here today with colleagues for lunch. I'm a novice when it comes to food from the Yucatan, so I wasn't really quite sure what to order. I ended up getting the papadzules (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papadzules), think hard-boiled eggs stuffed inside enchiladas. I thought the burrito wrapper was a little dry and tough, but I loved the flavors of the dish. There are three different sauces covering the papadzules, and there are toasted (pumpkin?) seeds sprinkled on top. The eggs offer a nice texture inside the wrapping, and the entire combination plays out nicely in your mouth. I also ordered a horchata, and it was solid. While I'm not sure if I'd miss papadzules next time, I can't wait to go back to Chichen Itza to try other options on the extensive menu. It's budget-friendly, and if you go in a group, the non-adventurous eaters can go grab a burger or Thai food from a neighboring stall. Los tacos de chicharron - although come as two - are double tortilla - so its like four...they come with tomate picado y aguacate. I had the torta de Poc Chuc which was really good, as well as the horchata. The horchata was good, although very different from any others I had ever had. The torta required tough teeth which I barely have, but it was really good so I kept chewing. It comes with potato salad which I am not really into so I did not think much of it. Stopped in for a quick lunch at the Paloma Marketplace and I didn't expect to see Chichen Itza Restaurant. I used to go to a Chichen Itza Yucatan Restaurant on 6th St. but it closed and I was bummed. I don't know if this one in the Paloma Marketplace is the recreation, but it tastes just like it. We had the Cochinita Pibil and the Pollo Pibil. Although they have pretty much the same name, they taste totally different. Considering how pork and chicken absorb ingredients, I thought they were equally great. They were both tender and flavorful. They come with black beans and a Mexican style rice (not the Spanish rice everyone seems to think automatically comes with Mexican food). The best part of the whole plate besides the meat were the grilled plantains/bananas. They were DELICIOUS! I could've just had a big plate of those as a meal and I would've been happy. It was pretty tasty all in all. It's much more subtle than typical Mexican food, so if you're expecting pinto beans and asado, don't. We also had chips and salsa. The regular salsa is fresh and well seasoned... not too spicy. But the habanero salsa is crazy hot but weirdly tasty. I didn't think you could eat something so hot and spicy, but still taste anything. I only had a little, and that was enough. If you're in the area, definitely stop in. This restaurant in such a simple, casual atmosphere provides fresh, appealing and tasty foods that compares to $$$$ restaurants. I highly recommend it!! This restaurant is a bit difficult to find. The parking lot can be entered from Grand Avenue, south of Public Storage. The building stands out though cause it's yellow, with clean lines and somewhat modern. I parked in the parking lot but there's also tons of street parking. When you walk in you'll see lots of other businesses, similar to a mall food court. From the parking lot entrance, walk straight back towards the back of the large open floor plan and you'll run right into the Chichen Itza Restaurant cashiers. There are tables placed randomly throughout the room but I think that certain tables may be assigned to the different venues. I'm not positive though because I ordered my food to go. It doesn't look chaotic by any means. It does appear to have some sort of order. I spoke to the cashier (who oddly has a bad review here but was so nice!!!!!), along with another gentleman who stepped out from the behind the counter. Both of the individuals were extremely friendly, helpful and detailed when I asked suggestions, etc. I ordered a horchata, the Panuchos appetizer (with pork instead of turkey), and the Tikin-Xic entree. I drank my horchata while I waited. I was unimpressed and a bit concerned as to how my meal would taste if the horchata wasn't to my liking. I felt it was a bit chalky with too little cinnamon. Maybe it wasn't stirred, or maybe it doesn't normally taste like that but that was my experience. The Panuchos appetizer is more like a meal, definitely a very big appetizer. Along with the corn tortillas, black bean puree, lettuce, red onions and avocado there was a lot of pork in that dish! The pork was so tender and flavorful. You could taste the other items but they weren't overpowering pork by any means. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't request a thing be changed. It was absolutely friggin' delicious!! I wish I could give an example of what this dish could be compared to but I can't. I've never had anything like it before. The Tikin-Xic entree was also on the large size. I have no clue what juice they marinated that fish in but it was also delicious and unlike anything I've ever tasted! The fish melts in your mouth, the rice is well, rice but it was perfectly cooked ;) There is a sauce that they put on the bottom of your dish, under the rice and fish. I can't even begin to describe it but it was again, delicious!! This entree also came with a side salad consisting of jicama, orange and lettuce in some sort of citrus-type salad dressing that has a bit of spiciness that you taste at the very end of each bit. What a great place for tasty and flavorful Yucatan food! Since this place is located in the food court Mercado Palomar, expect a food-court environment with delicious menu items. The best way to try the food is to go with a few friends and do family style. My faves are the Cochinita Pibil (orange juice marinated pork), Tikin Xic (fish) and the Panuchos (shredded turkey on corn tortilla). My least fave was the Bistec a la Yucateca, which was dry and chewy. Love the free parking! read more

It's all about the tickin xic. I've been here more than twenty times - you would too if you live/work near usc and you like your food to be delicious, fresh, inventive and budget-friendly. Chicken Itza is located in Mercado La Paloma so you have lots of other options to choose from if you wander in here often for lunch. But 99% of the time, this place is it for me. Once I tried the cochinita pibil and it was good. But the tickin xic is what keeps me coming back because I like fish and these people know how to do fish. You get a little salad to start with - it's fresh and crunchy...I think it's got little bits of orange and hicama. Then you get the fish and a yummy light sauce and it is succulent. The sauce isn't there to smother the fish or to hide its taste, but simply to enhance. Everything here feels honest and fresh. Chichen Itza is hands-down the best "Mexican" food I have had, and it isn't even expensive! I say "Mexican" with the quotes because this isn't your standard greasy spoon that serves tacos and burritos with carne asada, carnitas, etc. No, Chichen Itza is way more sophisticated, specializing in the Yucatecan cuisine of southeastern Mexico. You can also feel good eating here because nutritional information for all the menu items are available, and calorie content is as prominent as the prices on the menu board! So, what have I eaten here? I have enjoyed both the panuchos and the salbutes from the appetizer menu. These two are very similar dishes, with the salbutes consisting of a fluffy corn tortilla base, and the panuchos having a crispy, grilled corn tortilla stuffed with black beans as the base. Both are topped with lettuce, shredded charbroiled turkey, pickled red onions, cucumbers and avocado. Delicious! I have enjoyed the cochinita pibil torta, as well. This sandwich is also available as a taco, and it consists of Yucatán-style carnitas topped with red pickled onions between fluffy bread. I also have to highly recommend the pan de cazon, which is essentially four open-faced corn tortilla tacos stacked on top of each other. Black bean dip and shredded shark are inside, and the whole dish is topped with tomato sauce and a grilled habanero pepper. The tomato sauce is delicious, and the shark was very tasty too. It had a tender texture, similar to calamari, and wasn't weird at all. Finally, the food isn't that spicy for the most part. It's well-seasoned, but not crazy spicy. Of course, Chichen Itza has two homemade sauces available at the table, and they are both spicy as hell and delicious. The first is a standard habanero hot sauce. Not only does this sauce deliver in spicing things up, but it has a great flavor to it as well. The second sauce is a "Kut" habanero sauce, though the bottle labels call it "Hanabero" sauce. I think that might be a typo, but I can assure you the sauce itself is no mistake. Containing some garlic and a little olive oil along with the habanero, this sauce is reportedly five times hotter than the other sauce, and it's thicker, too. The flavor of the "Kut" sauce is more savory, and man is it hot!! So tasty. This place is awesome, and I can't wait to try their breakfast sometime! read more

So I was very hesitant to come here, because it was kind of in the middle of no where on a Sunday night. Our British friends wanted Mexican food, so we yelped a place close by and this popped up. At first we thought we had followed the wrong directions, but then later found it in the Mercado de la Paloma building. I split the Tikin-Xic with my sister and we also ordered the Guanabana drink. You order at the cash register and then sit down with a number. The drinks came out first and the Guanabana was a very refreshing tropical drink! The food came out in about 15 min and the Tikin-Xic was delicious! It comes on a huge plate with sauce then a scoop of rice with several fish fillets on top. The fish was cooked perfectly. Everyone else was very happy with their dishes also! i think I'm gonna have to make this one of my go-to places to eat downtown! read more

This place is THE BOMB. After a long day of sitting in on classes/campus tours at USC as a prospective grad student, I finally ventured over to Chichen Itza after hearing such great things about it. I ate by myself but I couldn't have been happier with my citrus jicama salad and two cochinita pibil tacos. Can't compare with Guisados because they are BOTH delicious!! The jicama salad was surprising (in a good way) because it was actually a large portion that served as part of my lunch the next day. It was really fresh and they're generous with the oranges. I really liked the hint of spice too. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality of food you're getting. How cute is Mercado la Paloma?! Hidden away close to USC and the DMV, Chichen Itza in the Mercado la Paloma was exactly what I was looking for in a quick and tasty lunch. The menu is pretty big and interesting (and they help you out by listing all of the ingredients in the items on the menu), but my friend and I stuck to the fish tacos. They were really super yummy (especially with that hot hot hot sauce!) with a side order of black beans and rice. Trust me, if you get frijoles and/or arroz, it is PLENTY for two people - they basically give you a whole soup bowl of it! The fish tacos themselves were good... perhaps nothing overly-special, but definitely authentic and yummy. You can park in the lot right next to the Mercado if you can find a spot and get your ticket validated with purchase - awesome! The setting hear is like an indoor swapmeet, but clean and with class. The mexican food is almost a fusion, very fine food, not taco shop style at all. There are several eateries in this building, but I chose Chichen Itza because of how busy it was, and the crowd goes where the good food is. I got their special chicken plate of the day with plantains and rice. My buddy got fish tacos which i had some of. The fish taco was great. The fish was fresh, and there wasnt too much sauce on it, just enough to where you can still taste the fish. I've been to this place 3 times in the past 3 weeks and have dinner plans here for next week too! The draw for me is the food with a clean aftertaste. Not very heavy and I think well prepared. I've had the Cochinta Pibil, Panuchos, Tamal Horneado, Caldo de Pavo, flan and coffee. If I were to be very nitpicky my only complaint is that the turkey on the Panuchos was on the dry side. I really enjoy the drinks that they have. The horchata especially helps with the intense heat of the hot sauce. If you have time for coffee have a cup. It was lovely and totally unexpected. Friday lunch was very crowded. It took a while to even find an open table. I don't think I'll be coming back at that particular time slot. Otherwise, I love the place. My heart has recently been captured by the amazing flavors of the Yucatan. Having moved from LA to the Bay Area a couple years ago, I was saddened to find that I'd missed stopping by Chichen Itza and sampling their Yucatecan fare. So on my last visit to LA, this was literally the first place I stopped and it didn't disappoint. Panuchos have become my favorite comfort food. They're not necessarily bad for you but they're not the healthiest of snacks. Regardless, the panuchos at Chichen Itza are great, as are the tacos (try the poc chuc taco). The prices are reasonable and the ingredients seem fresh and of high quality. Chicen Itza may be single-handedly responsible for turning me into a foodie. I was woefully lost before I had their perfectly cooked pollo asado, delicately charred plantains, organic rice and beans, and their legendary grilled Habanero salsa, which is rumored to have been what actually melted Icarus' wax wings, not the Sun. This place basically serves five star food at two star prices. It's truly unbelievable. From the magical, grilled flavors of the pollo asado, to the rich, savory melt-in-your-mouth cochinita pibil, to the humble sopa de llima and the Yucatan specialty panuchos topped with shredded turkey, there is just far too much of a good thing going on here to even really be able to put it into words! I actually won a panucho eating contest here last father's day, but sadly haven't been back since as I lost my $50 gift certificate, and I feel like I shouldn't return until I find it. However, this is one of the top ten best restaurants in Los Angeles, and you should already be there right now! But after trying a variety of appetizers and entrees... damn! It's worth every penny. So bomb and freshly prepared, everything was delicious and i ain't even lying. Every dish is jam packed full of flavor! I've been here 3+ times & each time I have ordered a different dish & each time gets better! My favorite entrees so are Tikin-Xic (fish) and Pollo Asado! I like that the dishes come with a side of carbs (black beans or rice depending on the dish) and plantains. The Panuhos are a must try! Its looks like an open face taco with black beans in the tortilla pan fried and topped with turkey, pickled onions, tomato and avocado. MmmMm! Just add some of the habanero sauce (just a little because it is SPICY) to make it taste even more amazing than it already is! On the weekends (I think) possibly weekdays too, they serve suckling pig! The nice man actually shows you the set up they have off to the right side. Its an entire baby pig split in half just sizzling in juice! You can have the meat made into a sandwich, tacos or a plate. As for drinks, I really enjoy the Agua de Chaya. It is made from Chaya leaves which is compared to spinach. It's very light and refreshing, not overly sweet and very low in calories. It definitely tastes better than it looks. This place really didn't live up to the hype. The food itself was okay, disappointing for what I was expecting, but okay. The problem was waiting 30+ minutes at 3PM when there wasn't a line. Cochinita pibil - braised pork in banana leaf. This pork was tender, but lacking the flavor I wanted. Plantains - cooked well, but the plantains themselves weren't very sweet. Rice and black beans were just.. rice and black beans, nothing special. I feel like the food should've been earth shattering amazing because I was so hungry, but it just wasn't. We have eaten here more than any other restaurant in the area by a long shot. I never tire of trying different things on their menu, and the food quality is absolutely unbeatable, especially for the price. I have never been disappointed by a dish at Chichen Itza. They have a unique style to their food that my boyfriend and I can't get enough of. Sometimes we go in and just say, give us whatever, I'm sure we'll love it! My favorites are the tamal colado, pan de cazon, cochinita pibil, and any of their egg dishes (whether breakfast or tamale style). Also, the BEST coffee I've had in the area. (I can only speak for the decaf, though, since that's all I drink.) We also did their 8-course tasting meal a few weeks back, and it was simply phenomenal! $35 per person for 8 (eight!) courses, each one utterly delicious. We ordered a variety of items from the menu and it was all very flavorful and tasted very authentic. If you've been over to the Yucatan this is what you would get. I had seen this restaurant on food network and I was instantly intrigued since it was in L.A. and there's not always places on that show that are near by. That being said, my lady and I had just come back from a trip to Cancun and we were of course craving good authentic Mexican food!!! We got the Langaniza Asada, cocinita pibil, fried plantains and the agua de chaya! Everything we had was just AWESOME! The flavors were great and it was not too heavy and everything tasted fresh and just made with Love. The langaniza was very flavorful and the cochinita pibil was very tender and juicy. To freshen things up at the end of the meal we had the Agua De Chaya which was very refreshing. Definitely a great spot to eat and the location is cool too b/c it's in a historic center so there's lots of artwork and historic decor. I definitely will go back. They get 5 stars cause I dont know where else to get food like this, especially so tasty. The cochinta pibil is amazing, perfectly braised, lean and juicy. I love the food here, very unique to have mexican food of this type in LA. But the colors are awesome, flavors are great, and everything is presented simply and beautifully. I enjoyed the kibis too, which are kind of like a falafel, with hints of beef and mint flavors. The plantains are a great way to finish off a savory meal, crispy fried on the edges and still sweet.
