5 stars for their habenero hot sauce alone. I love places that aren't scared to put out a hot sauce which is not palatable for the weak. I have had a few dishes including the conchita pibil ... (I hope I am spelling that correctly) which is a pulled pork cooked in a leaf which i presume is a banana leaf. Another yummy dish is their fried chicken with rice and plantains. There's nothing more that I like more than finding a gem that's cheap, surprising and delicious. I'm not familiar with Yucatan dishes but I have to say that after last night, I can say...I truly am a fan. I will be returning here many more times! We ordered the Plaintains with crema, Cochinita Pibil dinner, Panuchos, Papadzules, Poc Chuc, Vaporcito (yes, the server asked too if it was all just for us). I love finding hidden treasures and Chichen Itza is definitely one! This gem is located in a Cultural Food Court near USC, but the food is restaurant quality. This is not your typical Mexican food on a plate, the chef has been to culinary school and you can tell this by the presentation of the food. Never have I eaten in a food court and saw a plate brought to my beautifully tiled table that looked so good - I felt I should have paid more. We started out with the Panuchos which is a tortilla stuffed with black bean served with peppers and shredded turkey on it YUM! I ordered the Tikin Xic, with a side of Black beans. The fish was so flavorful and cooked to perfection with this yummy sauce. It also came with a salad and did I mention that they give you a lot! My friend had the Pollo Asado - another big tasty meal. This is a place I have no problem going back to - and I will! Additionally- The Food Court is a real nice place - great cultural things to look at after your meal. read more

Family-run business, no-nonsense service, good food. The only problem is that Chichen Itza is located within the Mercado La Paloma, a place that gets crowded fast. I arrived mid-day on a Saturday and did not have a problem finding parking or a table, but the lot was already full by the time I left and lots of people were milling around. I was really impressed by the Panuchos, which I had as an appetizer. The pickled red onions on top were great. For my main dishes, I tried two kinds of tacos: Poc Chuc and Cochinita Pibil. The Poc Chuc, which is made of grilled pork loin, was sensational. The Cochinita Pibil, achiote-marinated shredded pork coming in a high succulent pile, was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, but I was stuffed at that point so I don't think I appreciated it to the fullest. For drinks, Guanabana was a clear winner. And I have to give a special shoutout to the habanero sauce, the mild version of which is so strong, it can bring people back from the dead - or conversely, put them in the grave. read more

First time here: COCHINITA PIBIL Amazing amazing amazing. Most savory pork ever invented with generous portions, and a side plate of beans and rice and a few tortillas. SO GOOD- but it's salty watch out! My friend got the Papadzules, was pretty bland and nothing compared to the cochinita pibil. I highly highly recommend their pork. A LOT OF FREE PARKING: a blessing in the LA area, was so easy to park, super close to USC, and a cute little shopping area. OMG!!! Food here is mmmmmmm good. The menu describes exactly what you'll be tasting. Came here for dinner before the Bruno Mar's Concert at the Staples Center (only 2 miles from Staples Center). Decided to eat here because of the excellent reviews and the price can't be beat for the quality of food. Very good deal. I ordered the Conchinita Pibil plate. The dish came with black beans, rice and corn tortillas - the dish was packed full of flavor. All I can say, they do live up to the reviews. I've actually been to Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula in Cancun. Walking into this restaurant reminded me of walking back in time into a quaint village of Cancun. I got their pollo pibil, it came with nice fluffy white rice and bomb black beans with platano frito (fried plantains) and the chicke, wow I the chicken was laid on this orange delicious sauce on top of a banana leaf. This plate was amazing , some many different flavor'in a in the sauce . My husband got the grilled chicken that also comes with the same sides as mine, his was amazing too!! They serve u a good amount and the prices are reasonable, your paying for good quality food . As I set up an impromptu lunch with a buddy, to our surprise this was the first place that popped up on our yelp app. Wow great price point, great reviews and really close to USC. Yelpers did not fail, it is as good as yelped. Food: 4 stars Had the fish tacos as it was Friday during Lenten season. - 3 stars Chicken Tamale: 4.5 stars Couldn't have any of the chicken but this was probably the most flavorful and smoothest maza on a tamale that I ever tasted. My buddy raved about the food and have it 5 stars. They also have a good selection of agua frescas. Service: 5 stars Line formed after we ordered but it seemed to move along fairly fast. The woman who delivers the food to your table is pretty friendly but the woman behind the counter could put on a smile or two. Today I had an experience that made me feel that I wasn't a valued customer. Stood in front of four employees looking right at them and was never acknowledged, a Latina walked up next to me and they immediately took her order. Very hurtful and unfortunate moment especially since I ate there 2 to 3 times a week when I worked for the local city council member 10 yrs ago. Sadly today a Chichen Itza employee actions showed me that serving me wasn't necessarily a priority. I don't feel the establishment encourage the use of implicit biases to determine who gets good customer service but few staff members expressed that today. Man just thinking about the tortas at this place makes my mouth water. Almost everything they cook up here is awesome and not to mention authentic. Whenever I am in this part of town for business I make it a point to stop by and grab a bite to eat. The owners are real Yucateco chefs and it is busy but soooo good. The atole de coco has a perfect blend of sweetness, creaminess, and richness....one can only dream for such everlasting sipping pleasure. I love the habanero sauce. Really makes the cochinita pibil tacos. The flan is pretty good, too. It's more solid than flan I've had in the past, which is to say it's a bit like thick custard. The salbutes (shredded turkey, pickled red onions, avocado, tomato, lettuce on a fluffy fried corn tortilla) were excellent; a little greasy, but that's to be expected of anything in the circular, fried carbohydrate family. The jicama and orange salad is something you might've been able to whip up at home, but it's $3 and a cheap refreshment to the greasy salbutes. Will be back to try baked tamales and platanos! Really delicious and what I like to think of as Peruvian soul food :) Went on a Saturday for 5 pm dinner and there was no wait. The restaurant is located in an out-of-the way food court south of Downtown LA, but don't let the location deter you. The Yucatan-style Mexican food here is excellent. Service is also courteous and the staff will gladly explain any items that are unknown to you. Several of the dishes have citrus flavors, such as the succulent, fall-off-the-bone tender Conchita Pibil (pork marinated in anchiote & orange juice). Be careful if you get the taco version -- they're rather juicy and can drip all over you. The Ensalada de Jicama y Naranja makes for a refreshing side dish. It has a nice combination of sweet-sour-salty flavors. Also, there are usually two specials in addition to the regular menu items. I tried a dish called Relleno Negro on my last visit. It was like a posole, with turkey and two large pork meatballs stuffed with egg. The flavor was mildly spicy but a little saltier than I liked. There is usually adequate parking in the lot and on the street. If the spaces are all full at night, try the DMV parking lot next door (the entrance is on Hope Street). read more

Unfortunately, we tried the Bistec and Queso Relleno on the first visits which were okay but only 3 stars IMO. Came here for dinner on a tuesday night. It's located in this mercado in a kind of sketchy area. There were barely any people there when I went. Based off the yelp reviews, I got the cochinita pibil. They give you a dish of pork, a plate of rice and beans, habanero sauce, and 3 small tortillas. The pork was really yummy and flavorful and it was clear that this was authentic Yucatan food, although I'm not an expert. I got an extra 3 small tortillas for 31 cents because just 3 isn't enough. There was enough food to fill me up and have a little bit left to take to go. I just wish it was a little cheaper. The dinner cost me about 11 dollars? Not really all that bad though, I'm just cheap. Introduced here via Groupon and it is definitely my favorite mexican restaurant in the Los Angeles Area. Ordered the Cochinita Pibil which was very tender and the tortillas were very fresh. We also got the Tikin-Xic which was a white fish fillet and that was amazing. The best fish dish I've had at a mexican restaurant, the sauce is to die for. There is a parking lot just outside with plenty of parking. I am not sure how it would fair during peak hours because it is located in a little food court area with a handful of restaurants. They refuse to honor Groupon's policies... mine was expired but instead of letting me spend the face value, and taking my money, they insisted I buy everything in the package for 2 (I was eating for 1 that day) at full price and then they would give me a credit for the original purchase price. Would have given it 5 stars if I didn't have to wait for over 15 minutes to get our food. Overall very good, no one will be disappointed here. I've never been to any Mexican restaurant serving food that tastes as refined and authentically exotic as this place. Chichen Itza is not a typical taco/burrito place; they serve Yucatecan dishes, which are mainly influenced by Mayan and Caribbean cuisines and a bit of Middle Eastern (try their Kibis!) The portions are relatively big, too. A serving of cochinita pibil and a taco dish would be enough to fill up two adults, and the bill would be about $15 before tax & tips. Also, if you're not into spicy food, this place might not be for you, because their signature hot sauce made with habanero chili is a must for nearly all of their dishes, at least for me!
