Was very impressed with this place. We ordered a number of items from the menu. The ceviche was the best ceviche I have tasted. The chicharron tacos and chicken tacos were delicious. We had a chicken entree which was delicious too. The only disappointment was the chicken tamale - didn't love it as much as the rest of the meal. My fiance brought me here yesterday for my first time and wow was it interesting. I am not the biggest fan of horchata but this place makes it GOOD! I had the papadzules dish, oh man, I know its odd that its just hard boiled eggs stuffed in tortilla but the pumpkin seed sauce was yummy! The fact that the Michelin Guide did not give this place a star shows you how useless that guide is. I have been to a one-star hawker stand in Singapore, and Chichen Itza is far, far better. The food is fresh, features creative but not show-offy flavor combinations, and flawlessly executed. It is also, of course, a bargain. I always get the ceviche and something else. As I work at USC, I go with some frequency. If I didn't have to walk under the 110 to get there, I would go with more frequency. I supposed I should try someplace else in the Mercado sometime. read more

I really enjoy this place! The food has not let me down. The ceviche is out of this world. My usual go to is the Cochinita Pibil and spicy potato salad. The Cochinita Pibil melts in your mouth and is delicious. The line can be pretty long and the wait for food isn't quick but I would say it's worth it. The employees who work there are really nice too. The parking lot used to be free. It's now $7.70, such a random fee. So be sure to bring cash for parking. read more

Chicken Itza is a great Mexican restaurant in Mercado La Paloma, a food court and community center in South Central LA. The cochinita pibil was really great, a massive mound of braised pork atop the banana leaf it was baked within, served with tortillas and alongside red and beans. On the table is a jar of the most delicious habanero sauce, although it is definitely seriously spicy. I'd look forward to coming back and trying their other offerings. read more

Apparently, the success of Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-ins and Dives has forced the backwards sunglasses wearing, unnecessary wristband wearing bleach blonde to film at more and more restaurants, so much so that many of these current "joints" truthfully do not warrant exposure in the first place. That's the only explanation I can conjure for his stop at LA's Chichen Itza. Checking it out on Guy's word was my first mistake. Staying for a meal my second. I enjoy an Agua Fresca as much as the next man. What I don't enjoy is being mocked by the man working the register because of my unfamiliarity with guanabana. A simple inquisition of the beverage resulted in eyes rolling to the back of the head. Assumed the food had to one up the service. Not the case. The pork chop plate was surprisingly tasteless, even while topped with salsa. The conchanita pibil was tender and flavorful, but came off as disappointing when the server never returned after promising me tortillas that allegedly come with the entree. As disappointing as these two dishes were, you would have thought that Rick Bayless himself had plated them when compared to my wife's choice, the Huevos Motulenos. Not only was it lukewarm and listless, the dish looked as though it was in the beginning stages of a second grader attempting to build and microwave a ham and cheese quesadilla. Soggy tortilla chips resting atop sliced plantains, drizzled with red sauce and then topped with squares of cold ham and unmelted cheddar cheese, oh and don't forget the six or seven green peas sprinkled around the mess. We were tempted to send it back, but feared it may suffer the same bleak fate as our tortillas. I guess my message in this would be not only to potential customers, but to Guy...... It's not about quantity Mr. Fieri, but quality. Maybe a few less shows will result in unworthy destinations not being reached. Came here with the fiance for dinner. I wasn't expecting too much since it was in a little marketplace that had a lot of mish moshed food places. But I was pleasantly surprised! We ordered the ceviche (which was alright), the pollo asado (which was surprisingly moist and flavorful), and the bistec a la Yucateca (which stole the show). The steak was so moist and flavorful and tender. Very delicious. My only complaint was the side of black bean puree instead of whole black beans. Very surprised. Delicious! I found this place through a Groupon. Both my friend and I thought the food was delicious! I got the Bistec a la Yucateca it was steak, plantains, potatoes, rice and black bean purée. It was scrumptious! My friend got the pork pibil and loved it. We also shared the panuchos appetizer which really hit the spot! When you go, know it is located in the food court by the freeway near USC. Do not let the location discourage you from going because trust me you.will.love.the.food. I was really impressed with Chicken Itza. We found it on yelp and when we saw all of the outstanding reviews and that over 400 people had reviewed it, we knew we had to give it a try! It is a little hard to find, it is inside an almost food court type of place. But there is a lot of street parking right outside. I was impressed that even though it had a food court type setting they still had really nice tables and great service. I almost felt like it was a real sit-down restaurant. I ordered the Cochinita Pibil tacos and they were delicious. I added a lot of the Habanero Sauce and even though my mouth was on fire I just kept putting more on! I came here after a recommendation that this place has some decent caballeros pobres. Depending where you are from you might call this dish torrejas. I have tried this particular dish at many places and it is usually to heavy on the syrup and the bread is very dry. Chichen Itza makes this dish as I remember having it years ago when we had family out of state make it for us. The price if I recall was 2.75$ and comes with 2 pieces in a to go box. This is a dessert dish, take home if full and enjoy later! Lunch hour can be hectic because of the DMV across the street and parking can became a big problem here. Come here after 4pm and you should have no problem finding parking and quick food service. read more

Read rave reviews of this place by Jonathan Gold and on the Chowhound boards, so I was eager to check it out. It just about lives up to the hype! First of all, this was my first time visiting El Mercado La Paloma (the delightful warehouse space that Chichen Itza and several other restaurants are housed in), and I have to say, it was pretty much love at first sight. If you haven't been there yet, go check it out! Secondly, the food was full of surprises and wonderfully savory. Definitely try the pan de cazon, which is basically a bunch of pillowy tortillas with delicious shredded shark meat in between and topped with a yummy tomato-based sauce. It was really good and so different from the Mexican food I'm used to! The cochinita pibil was a little underwhelming (the meat was not as moist or savory as I would've liked) but respectable enough. Same for the horchata, which was too sweet for my taste but at least seemed to be homemade. I'd love to go back and try some of their other dishes and maybe a cooking class! Oh yeah, and the homemade habanero salsa definitely gets my endorsement too. I want it on all of my food from now on. hehe read more

I met several friends here to work on a project, and we picked up dinner from Chicken Itza. Delicious... there were only two issues that kept this surprisingly fine food court experience from 5 stars - not a very hot plate and not very good fried plantains (they were cold). Because it is a food court, you order a the counter. The staff is super friendly and they bring your order to your table. Based on Yelpers raving about the pibil, I ordered the pollo pibil, which is a chicken leg and thigh marinated with achiote, sour orange juice and spices and braised. The chicken is served atop a banana leaf and topped with pickled onions. It is served with several pieces of fried plaintain, sauteed black beans, white rice, and a little cabbage/pepper mixture with corn tortillas. The marinate was great - sweet and sour flavors that had really tenderized the meat. The pickled red onions were a great tangy crunch on the chicken. It was really best all mixed together - a little chicken, a little rice and a litte black beans. Welcome to flavortown! I could have skipped the plaintains, but I was starving so I ate them (the plates are reasonable portions - probably 1/3 c. of cooked rice, 1/2 c. of black beans, a few tablespoons of cabbage, etc.). It is also a bargain at $7.99 plus tax. I would definitely be back. My companions loves the Tikin-Xic and the fish tacos. I just hope that the food is hotter next time. read more

This place is pretty solid!!! I have eaten here a couple of times and they are consistent with their flavors. Service is also pretty good and the prices are very reasonable (around $6-$8 per entree). I only have 2 complaints: The entree portions are a lil on the small side. But they have a couple of sides you add on like I do. The other complaint, the sikil pac was kinda gross. But, I will still continue to eat here. HIghlights: Anything with their Poc Chuc its tender and very flavorful, Bistec a la Yucateca (delicious steak and potatoes), Panuchos, Pollo Asado, Ceviche (perfectly seasoned and fresh), orange and jicama salad and the Agua de Chaya (refreshing drink and I hear its very good for you). For those trying to watch their calories: I really love the fact that they tell you how many calories in each dish. I dont think any of the entrees have more that 800 calories the majority are around 650. read more

Was looking to try a different kind of Mexican food, and a friend from USC suggested Chichen Itza, which is inside/towards the back of a vibrant mercado. I'd come back if I were in the area but I wasn't blown away by the food. FOOD: 3 stars. We both ordered tamales but my order of the TAMAL HORNEADO $4.25 was dry and bland. I didn't even finish them. My friend's choice of the BRAZO DE REINA $4.99 was much tastier. SERVICE/ATMOSPHERE: 4 stars. You order at the counter and then they bring you your food. As a student at USC, I"m not sure how it took me so long to discover this place. Who knew that Mercado Paloma had so many gems? I will definitely be back to experience more of the food options here. Back to chichen itza. I don't remember what I had (pollo asado maybe?), except that it was a chicken dish. It was SO filling, cheap and amazingly delicious. The chicken was moist, the rice was delicious, and the plantains were perfectly cooked. And it is SUPER close to USC. I will be returning here again and again! I absolutely love the tamales and that orange tomato sauce! Service can be slow but it's probably because they have so many orders and the food takes a while to cook. I need to come back to try their actual entrees instead of ordering tamales all the time. The tamal horneado is supposedly baked and is very crispy. I think I prefer the tamal vaporcito more.
