The food was an afterthought (initially). At Aumm Aumm, it (the food) became the main story. My rideshare dropped me off and I thought, 'This will do.' A large patio in the late spring sun was just what I needed. I walked in and said I was a party of one and I wanted to eat outside. Done. Soon, a very chatty and kind waiter was taking good care of me and offering a glass bottle of still water.* As I am wont to do, I ate in waves: appetizer and main course (and, if I have the room/interest, dessert). A drink and a solid. A began my meal with the burrata. Rarely can you go wrong with a ball of cheese but this was a silky, milky sphere of mozzarella, served with oranges, toasted walnuts & topped with truffle honey. Truffle honey. I tried to pair every bite with cheese, citrus, nut, and honey and each time I was successful, my mouth sang. To accompany my chews, my waiter suggested Rancoli Vermentino, a dry white with a crisp finish and enough adjacency to the fruit components of the burrata to make it make sense. Lovely. I forgot that I was in Jersey. For my main, I had a GF version of the pennoni alla genovese napoletana - slow-cooked caramelized onions & diced beef pasta. Simple but incredibly flavorful (which, I've learned, is what Italian food is all about). The plate was large and I could smell it before I saw it (a very good thing). To help bring the dish to life, my waiter suggested a warm red blend (earthy, cherry/berry forward). He was correct on the type of wine but I was a bit disappointed in the price point. Believe me, I know the ins and outs of the restaurant biz, but this glass should have been (at least) a couple of dollars cheaper (knowing what I could get a bottle for). This slight faux pas lessened my rating to a 4. Not the end of the world. Just know what you're paying for before committing. I was pleasantly full so I passed on dessert/coffee. Th NJ sales tax was less than I was used to but the dreaded credit card charge fee made an appearance. I probably spent more money on dinner than I would at present but I don't regret the experience. California rolls were good and 2 pieces of shumai were crispy and nicely seasoned. Rice was the right portion and chicken was fresh-tasting with good quantity of teriyaki veggies. Some pieces were a bit tough and the seasoning overall did not really permeate, but I didn't mind. I mean, it's lunch special so you can't really expect too much. I was nicely satisfied with this bento - not too much, not too little, and at a great price. Unfortunately, after my last two visits, I won't be coming back because of the extremely poor service from one particular server MALE with glasses in his late 40s-50s. My family of four (2 adults and 2 kids) ordered the Koobideh and Soltani plates. Every single time we've dined here over the years, we've had our onions grilled without any issue. This time, the server insisted that onions are only supposed to be served raw and told us that if we wanted them grilled, we had to order and pay extra. We paid the extra charge without arguing, but the way he spoke to us was rude, condescending, and unprofessional. This was actually the second time we had this same experience with him. When the bill arrived, we noticed an 18% service charge had been added. The server said it was the restaurant's policy for parties of four. This was surprising because we've been coming here for years with the same party size, have never been charged a service fee before, and have always tipped generously. I politely asked whether this was a new policy and requested to see the menu to verify that the service charge was disclosed. Instead of answering, the server told me, "Pay first with the service charge, and then I'll show you the menu." He also implied that he wanted me to sign the receipt first to make sure he secured the service charge because he thought we wouldn't tip him. After leaving, I called the restaurant to speak with the manager, but the same server answered and claimed no manager was available. When I questioned the undisclosed 18% service charge, he repeated that it was restaurant policy for tables of four. I explained that I had never been charged this before and that, as far as I understood, mandatory service charges should be clearly disclosed on the menu. His response was, "Well, you already signed it, so it's not your money anymore." That response was shocking and completely unprofessional. I would have gladly paid the service charge--and even tipped extra--if the service had been friendly and respectful. Instead, the entire experience felt hostile and dishonest. When I asked for the manager's name, the server hung up on me and told me not to call the restaurant back. I've been a loyal customer for years, which makes this experience even more disappointing.
