Seventeen years after my first review, Chicken Box is still in my favorite fried chicken place list. I've watched the ownership, menu, and prices evolve, and today the restaurant has clearly embraced some of the Korean fried chicken influences and element instead of the pure traditional Southern-style broasted chicken I remember from 2009. Even with those changes, the one constant has been quality. The chicken is still fried fresh to order with a crispy crust and juicy meat that's worth the wait, and the thick-cut potato wedges are still a must. Over the years I've paired Chicken Box with everything from a red wine like Chateau Cheval Blanc to beer like Heady Topper, Tree House, the Pliny, etc....The style may have changed, but Chicken Box is still the place I think of whenever I want outstanding fried chicken with an equally outstanding drink. read more

Best chicken! Flavorful and moist with a crispy skin! Love the potato wedges too. Easy to order online and pick up. Wish they had delivery through Uber Eats or something because I drive all the way from Friendly Hills to pick up the chicken but it's worth it! The original one whittier blv was the best I ever had and was there over 50 years ! I think I just found my new favorite fried chicken place. I'm pretty sensitive when it comes to fried food especially that greasy oil smell, but everything here tasted clean and fresh. You can tell they take good care of their oil. The seasoning was really well-balanced. Not too salty, which made it super easy to keep eating without getting tired of the flavor. We ordered the family meal and the portion size was more than enough. The sides were honestly amazing. The coleslaw and macaroni salad were creamy and flavorful, way better than I expected. They even included Hawaiian rolls, so we made little chicken sandwiches such a fun and delicious bonus :) Definitely a solid 5-star experience for me. Chicken is excellent. However, when calling in the order, absolutely no mention was made that the parking lot was completely closed due to repaving and re-striping. This forced us to find parking on a very crowded street. If my handicapped husband had come by himself (like he normally does) he would not have been able to get our order to his car without help. Visited for the first time at the new location. They did a nice job setting up the place. Plenty of parking at the new spot on Harbor Blvd. The food was tasty, as usual. Everything seemed just about the same as before they moved, except for the price. It's not surprising they'd raise prices, I'm sure their rent is higher at the new location. Still a great option for tasty chicken and potato wedges. I've never been a fan of the macaroni salad and wish they'd change up the recipe. The Chicken Box recently reopened in it's new location in La Habra and I was excited to give it a try. My girlfriend and I were hungry and wanted something new and we haven't had chicken in awhile so we were so down. I ordered the chicken sandwich and she ordered the chicken strips, we also ordered 6 potato wedges. The menu is not huge but it offers enough to satisfy your needs. The Chicken tasted great and those potato wedges were so delicious. I could probably just eat those for a meal to tell you the truth. The restaurant itself isn't big inside but it's not too small either. The cashier was really nice and it was really busy that evening I went in. So what I'm saying is there might be a line but it's worth it. I'll give it another go soon, that's a sure thing. read more

Updated my review from a rating of 4 stars to 1 star. The chicken pieces were perfectly golden brown and appeared crispy. However, upon 1st bite, you will be hit by the smell of meat at its early stage of decay. Had they used fresh chicken, theirs will definitely be able to outrank 99% of the chicken places in the area. Well, I can report that Chicken Box is alive and well in its new(er) location. It's actually located just around the bend from its old Whittier Blvd. spot, and now on the west side of Harbor. But for the time being, it's in the middle of a construction quagmire and all but invisible on first (and even second) glance. But the tender and tasty rack of ribs, the fresh salads and delicately crispy chicken, fish filets and broasted potatoes were all winners. Ditto the shrimp and deep-fried Oreos (yes, you heard me right!). I had a monumental box of goodies for the bargain price of just over $150, and it all fed a crowd of hangry folks handsomely. The perky clerk and one of the customers even helped me out with the mega-order. My only fear is that customers won't be as intrepid as I was in hunting down the place. Not the same Chicken Box it used to be. We were pretty regular customers from Whittier and were sad when it moved. We've been to the new location twice and it's just not the same. Coke slaw tasted soggy and the chicken wasn't as crispy or juicy as before. We might try it one more time being that they're still working on their location issues. I love their chicken, it's my favorite. I typically get wings. My friend got a thigh and it was quite small. Another friend got their fish and it was small too. Their mashed potatoes and gravy have no flavor. The coleslaw is good. I do wish the staff had more personality. They hardly smile or speak, not very welcoming. read more

First time trying this place and we are pleasantly impressed! Grandma's Chicken used to be our go-to spot back then until they closed down. We had a random craving for those broasted chicken for old times' sake, so we were happy when we stumbled across this one. Went with 0 expectations, but now we are regulars! The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I felt that their thighs were actually more moist than Grandma's Chicken. Their hot sauce had a funky, bright red color, but I love any louisana sauce, so I'm not complaining. I'm not sure if their macaroni salad and their dinner rolls are store-bought or made in-house, but they were delicious with each other. Potato wedges were unremarkable, but I did appreciate that they were cooked through and soft (some of these giant wedges tend to be a little under at times). 1 star docked because they would not pick up their phone for the life of me (they were not even that busy when we got there). We live 25 minutes away, so a phone order placed prior to getting there with 2 cranky babies would've helped. We drove 25 minutes to get there, only for the cashier to let us know that our order will take another 25 minutes. Mind you, she told us this after she had already charged us. Be going to chicken box throughout the years once they got to the new location decided to try them today. I ordered the chicken strip combo and paid nine dollars for a chicken strip. That wasn't even the size of my finger. It was hard dried and curled up. Would not recommend waste of my money tried calling to let them know and they were extremely rude hung up and didn't want to fix the issue. basically they tried to say that they have nothing but great reviews. I was extremely disappointed, especially with the money. I spent hoping this was gonna be the place that used to be. Portions are extremely small prices went up and overall quality went down. First of all I heard good reviews about this place I just moved to the area and decided to give it a try. I chose the 3 pieces with 2 sides which was potatoes wedges and Mac salad. The chicken isn't seasoned. I got 3 measly wedges and they even put the Mac salad in the hot box and if you know Mac salad should be served cold. I asked for hot sauce and got 3 packets. I'm a cook and this wasn't cook with any love! Not going back good luck oh and the lady with the lip fillers and blonde hair should work on customer service. This establishment is under new owners that claim that they bought the business including the original recipe for the chicken. This must be a lie because the so called food we received was c**p! The chicken coating was this and not at all like it was under original owners. The meat smelled rancid, the broasted potatoes were almost bare skinned. Awful food.
