This is a small restaurant in a little strip mall on the north east corner of Foothill and Mayflower. I called in my order so it'd be rrady when I got there. As I'd never been before, I wanted to try a little bit of everything, so I ordered the King's Combo which came with a lule skewer, chicken skewer, beef skewer, rice, hummus, pita bread, salad, and two garlic spreads. I swapped out the salad for extra rice. The beef and chicken skewers we great. The lule was a bit dry. The rice was ok, but not as good as I've had at other places. The garlic spread is less tangythank Zankou's but yummy in it's own respect. My order was ready when I got there, my foid was hot, and the service was very friendly. Quick and easy ordering for super juicy, yummy rotisserie chicken. We had the chicken family meal and get got some extra side dishes like the Tabule, Garlic spread, beef kebabs, chicken lule and Baklava. The Baklava was mediocre, everything else was so goooood that o told my husband, "we found our new fave restaurant!". The garlic spread was a bit chunkier than I'm used to compared to Zankou, or the ones you buy from Wholefoods. Although it had pieces of garlic, it tasted like heaven. Even our 11 yrs old son liked it and you know how picky kids are! Our two kids ate the meal from here. Their pita bread was divine. I usually skip the pita breads from Mediterranean restaurants because they tend to be too thick and doughy. Their pita bread was fresh and thin, which is what I like. The salad was pretty basic, nothing spectacular here. The Tabule left me a bit disappointed from everything else. It was ok. I thought that the tomatoes were a bit soggy, too small and too little. It was decent but not spectacular. This spot is our new go to restaurant for healthy meals, despite some set backs because it's the best of what we have around here. Soooooo tough and seemed like it was cooked multiple times. Really off putting Lule kebab- also really tough and try. Also a bit chewy. Maybe the best Mediterranean food in So. Cal. Fattoush salad is excellent, chicken is definitely the best I've had. What really sets this place apart from others like Carousel or Zankou is that they don't excessively salt all their dishes. They use tons of other spices, and you can really taste all those other flavors because the dishes are not overpowered by unnecessary salt. I've found my close-to-home so close-to-taste Zankou chicken! Even though Pasadena is only several miles away... Chicken King Express is A mile away! You can easily miss this place when going down foothill because the sign is small and street lights are fairly dim. Had to buy family dinner for the night and boy did they thank me!!! They are known for the rotisserie chicken! You can go wrong with succulent juicy tender roasted chicken! You just can't! I wanted to take a small step outside my box and order the Tri-tip Shawerma plate with pickled beets, hummus, and pita bread. This plate is very big so I would advise to share with someone and save it for lunch the next day!!! The meat was very tender, very soft, and very flavorful. It was a bit too salty for me. I needed to put some sauce on top of it to coat the saltiness of the meat. Their OH SO GOOD garlic paste was bomb! It's actually a lot stronger than Zankou's. I barely put a pinch on every bite in comparison to spreading it on my pita like butter.This makes me believe that the paste is very fresh! Chicken King Express has been the highlight of my week. Granted it's been a really bad week. I'm really glad I got the combo kebab plate here. I have discovered a tasty kebab place within walking distance of my home. The chicken was great. It had almost made me forget about the horribleness of a bad week. As I was waiting for my food, a lady came in to order. She stood waiting to order for about 10 minutes, nobody takes her order (meanwhile the owner is going in and out caretaking his family I could only assume, bringing them drinks and sitting down chatting). Some other customer comes in and they take her order right away and the 1st lady still hasn't ordered. So she kind of puts her hands out like what? The owners like do you need help? She's like yeah, I want to order and he's like when she's done go ahead and takes his happy butt back outside for social hour. The guy finishes taking the 2nd persons order and walks away again before the 1st lady orders... another couple minute passes and he finally asks her what she wants, she orders chicken and instantly tells her there's no more chicken. It's 2pm.. so she finally leaves, I just felt so awful for her. She was nice and smiled at everyone. I have been coming to this place since it opened and have seen the place gone through like 5 owners. I must say that the family that owns this place now has it down. Unlike Zankou, these people are very friendly, knowledgeable about their product and strive to make sure that the experience that you have with them is a positive one. What I usually get: This is one of the few places that I eat at before working out. Having their 1/2 chicken with pita and garlic sauce is my idea of a good meal before pumping iron. When I don't feel like having the 1/2 chicken, they have good kabob meat skewers (chicken, beef (a tri tip) and lule (ground beef). Other food: They also have americanized bbq (which i have yet to try and would probably go to a place like Stonefire Grill in Pasadena or Valencia for that kind of faire) and their mediterranean style side dishes are pretty good as well (hummus, baba ganoush, taziki, etc.) They also offer a flat screen with DIRECTV on it. Sorry, no HD. So if there is usually a Laker game on, you can be sure that this place would be offering it. Wow, what a meal! I was fortuned enough to come with a few friends and that have me a chance to try multiple items from the menu. Let me start off by saying the chicken is extraordinary, as the name implies. Fresh, and perfectly prepared white meat with a side of the best garlic sauce man could ask for. The falafel was clearly not prepared before hand, served fresh on a bed of lettuce; each bite left me biting on my fingers for more. Zankou was too far. We were in the mood for something besides American food. Anyways, we were shocked at how good the chicken was! Fast forward today (9/4/2020). Restaurants not allowed for dine-in. So I was in the neighborhood reminiscing the day my friend was still here (he moved to Florida). I'm glad they're still opened! I just walked to the front door and there's a table setup, nobody can go in. A nice gentleman took my order. A cook can be seen grilling the meats. It's in plain view so you know it's clean and orderly. I bought the chicken combo and the kabob combo. I took it home and ate it with my family and they liked it. Taboule was excellent and was a kicker for the pita wrap with chicken, hummus, garlic sauce, and rice. Their garlic sauce is real good but was given a small amount in a souffle cup. I was never a fan of Mediterranean food until I came to this place. Now I crave it al the time! I've tried the whole chicken as well as the chicken kabob plate and both times the chicken has been juicy and full of flavor. It does take a little time to get your food, but that's only because the meats are placed on the grill upon ordering. You definitely will not see the meats sitting under a heating lamp. I've also noticed that I don't feel gross and tired after I'm done eating. Not to mention, the great hospitality we receive from the owner every time we're here.
