My family and I went here after dropping my niece off at school. The place was in the middle of nowhere. I had the shrimp ( how can they mess up fried shrimp) and sides. Every thing was HORRIBLE, DIRTY and GROSS. I would rather have very small portions of amazing food, instead of a bunch of nasty food that tasted like it was prepared and not actually cooked at the restaurant. Along with many others, I have been quite confused by the different kinds of chicken Mary's produces. The guys at the meat counter at Whole Foods have been clueless, and I find the website misleading and confusing re: GMO's. Today I finally called the company and spoke with Ramon and then Ben Pittman (one of owners), both of whom were very helpful. I thought others might benefit from the following information; there are four levels of chicken sold: 1. (least healthy) Free-range: birds are fed corn and soy that is likely GMO-contaminated, have about 2' bird movement area after old enough to be released from cages. All the chicken is air-chilled. 2. Non-GMO fed: Same as above but fed non-GMO corn. The only difference on the label is a non-gmo label. More specifically, corn with a max. of 1.5% GMO's. 3. Organic: same as above but fed organic feed. (The allowable % of GMO's in organics is 5, and will likely increase as GMO's continue to contaminate the fields). 4. Pasture-raised, same as "CA Bronze": Chickens are "chicken-tractored" in mobile coops out in fields. Organic field supplemented by organic (so GMO-free) feed. One of two chicken restaurants located next door to each other. They are both quite well known in the region. I ended up at Chicken Mary's. Everybody in my group ordered a different chicken, whether fried or grilled and all were good. The fried chicken I had was perfect on the inside but with a hard crust. The side dishes I got with it were okay but nothing special. I could swear the fries came out of a bag of frozen fries. Other than that, nothing wrong with this place. read more

Me and my family used to love going to Chicken Mary's in Pittsburg,ks..it had been a while since we've been and we're all excited to go eat that ever delicious greasy fried delicacy..fried chicken. So today we went and man what a true disappointment it was..! Our service and waitress was good but the chicken has gone downhill like crazy..I ordered 2 large white peices..I wishbone and one side breast..and both of them looked like they starved the birds into a state of anorexia before plucking the feathers.. my girlfriend ordered 2 peices of dark meat.. they brought her 2 of the scrawniest peices of bird imaginable with about 2 real bites of Chicken on each one.. they were nothing but bones n breading. I don't normally complain but in this case I had to say something..needless to say they weren't very apologetic and said that the dark peices were "backs" and admitted that they don't have much meat on them.. REALLY..! I've never even seen a chicken back for sale and this "gourmet chicken" place is serving them on a 10$ plate..! shame on u chicken Mary's..I expect a lot more from a place that has the history and business that they do. So after talking to the waitress and the cashier they knocked a measly 4$ off our bill..but they lost me as a customer for life. read more

Been going to Chicken Mary's with family since I was a small kid. I always loved the food but didn't realize how much until moving away from the area. I now live in Florida and only make it to Chicken Mary's every other year two. There is NO substitute for SouthEast Kansas Chicken and onion rings. Enjoy!!!!! read more

The chicken here is perfectly crispy,juicy, and delicious. The Mac and cheese was amazing, mashed potatoes were great. Green beans were great, tasted home made and home grown. Get there early to get a seat!! Would definitely eat there again!!! read more

I have to agree with the other four star reviews. Onion rings...awesome. Service...awesome. Excellent chicken, but my wife's pan fried chicken is better; this kind has a little corn meal and I'm a plain four man. Really good value! Also, we noticed how clean, well run, quick, and friendly it was. This was our first visit, and I am sure we will be back. Of course, next time we have to try chicken Annie's down the street just to compare; I bet that Annie's is also pretty awesome. Nothing like competition. Worth a 45-60 min drive, and really a good place to take a family. read more

We come here with a large group about once a year. The service is fast and especially friendly. The chicken is good but I would like to see more healthy options. The prices are reasonable, our family of 5 ate for about $50 with tip. I would like to see more room between the tables, otherwise, the experience was great. read more

It's worth at least an hour drive, I'll definitely will go again. Several people at our table went for a cut of chicken I've never seen anywhere else called the wishbone. We were a party of 30 which is not uncommon for Chicken Mary's - the service was very disorganized (only one person took our order and then when plates were brought out, the waitstaff called out what was on each plate so you could identify your own order). The food was great. They serve white bread with every meal (not just storebought whte bread) - very good, seemed like it might have been baked on the premises. Of course the fried chicken was great - crisp and juicy. Fried onions are a must-have; they were well seasoned and crisp. The German potato salad was served cold. It consisted of diced potatoes in a vinegar dressing; sounds odd but it really grows on you. The coleslaw is said to be a German recipe as well - the garlic dressing was really good. Stay away from the iced tea - strong sulfur taste. read more

Open ordered the spaghetti. Hello, we are at the famous chicken place. About five minutes in, she stole a piece of chicken from me and her mom. The chicken is crispy and flavorful. The sides really made the meal. The German potato salad is vinegar based. This is a nice change. The mashed potatoes and gravy are just like mom made. The salad dressing was industrial (only complaint). The spaghetti reminded me of a fund raiser. It was good, but not as good as the chicken. read more

We had eaten two doors down at Chicken Annie's a week prior to this visit. We thought all this hype about these two chicken places and FOOD NETWORK coverage etc., we should go and try each one ourselves. I am sorry folks but Chicken Annies is by far better than Chicken Mary's. Chicken Mary's Fried Chicken coating is extremely salty, and when we talked to our waitress and cashier, they both acted like, "It is?" The batter is a hard batter coating, like a dry hard cookie you buy at the grocery store like Nabisco brand. We had an appetizer of Gizzards and Hearts and they were small, and hard and just nothing like what we had a week prior at Chicken Annie's. I asked for a bottle of Tabasco Sauce with our Appetizers and all they had was some other "HOT SAUCE" and was told they don't carry Tabasco Brand! The bread they bring out is a little more flavorful compared to that of Chicken Annie's. The iced tea was brewed and strong, didn't taste that well either. Their dinner salad was okay but asked for Thousand Island and again was told they didn't carry that. Their spaghetti- was okay, tasted a lot like Chef Boyardee's in a can. They do have a wider menu than Chicken Annie's. Chicken Annie's was the true original but we found it interesting that the two are now related to each other but keeping their traditions the same. Was extremely disappointed and will NOT go back to this place ever again. Chicken Annie's has our vote by far. Their batter is thin and tastier and not heavy and hard as a rock as Chicken Mary's was this time when we were there. We found it interesting that there are so many that think this place is the cat's meow, but for us, it bombed completely. When we drove passed this place after our first visit to Chicken Annie's it was packed and we thought, "They must surely be as great as the other place but it was really terrible. We were excited to try this Pittsburgh, KS institution but we were disappointed when served instant mashed potatoes. How do you go to the trouble of frying chicken and not serve real mashed potatoes? Waited for years to try this place after seeing it on TV on "Food Wars" Drove an hour and a half to get there. They are not open for lunch, not till 4pm. The place looks like it fell out of the 70's no atmosphere what so ever. There was one waitress who came and told us that there were 2 tables ahead of us that she needed to wait on first and then she would be back. The menu was a joke, it was dirty and nasty you didn't want to touch it. The food had no flavor at all, it seemed the chicken was dredged in flour and that was all. The German potato salad was a joke, canned potatoes with vinegar and rubbery onion, no bacon, no sugar, ice cold and it came served in a rounded packed mold that by the end of the meal started warming up and loosing it's molded shape. The German Cole slaw was cabbage with vinegar. The mashed potatoes were just nasty, perhaps they didn't have any milk that day and just used old boiled water from cooking other potatoes. No flavor, gravy was basically a solid form witch resembled glue. For some reason they serve spaghetti and it looked like Chef Boy Ardee, just boiled noodled and red sauce, no meat no flavor. When they brought our drinks they brought a basket of French bread, the basket was full of sliced bread with little packages of butter under the bread so everyone at the table got to handle all the bread to get any butter. There was no reason I can see this place it still open, I understand it was "the" place to go years ago. Sorry I think those days are over. Go to McDonald's, go anywhere, don't go here. read more

I like to support local family businesses and try out restaurants that have been recognized for doing something well for many years. Since Chicken Mary's seemed to have won the reviews of the local chicken battle, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, the chicken was OK, but not something I would drive out of my way to eat. The sides were less impressive. Spaghetti was mostly tomato sauce on spaghetti with no spices and no meat. The slaw was mostly just sour rather than the sweet-sour vinegar slaw I was expecting. Again, no additional seasoning like celery seed or the taste of onions or peppers shredded in it. I enjoy German potato salad, but this was more just pre-diced potatoes with some bland dressing. No onion, no bacon, no celery seed, no pepper, no hard boiled egg slices that you would expect in German potato salad....just plain white diced potatoes like you buy frozen. Price was inexpensive, but the food lacked the flavor of something prepared from scratch. read more

We were visiting Kansas Nov. 4, 2015 and read a magazine reviewing the best chicken in KS. Chicken, and Chicken Mary was on the top of the list. Though the seven of us were very hungry, we decided to wait the 2.5 hours until they opened at 4:30. All of us ordered chicken with different sides, including onion rings and gizzard appetizers. The waitress did a fine job. The onion rings came first and were very thin sliced and very greasy. We all tried some but left them. Then came the gizzards. they were very dried our, tough and terrible tasting, we sent them back. All the sides were served in cheap Styrofoam containers. the apple cause was died a funky red color, the green beans and cottage tasted like they were from and can. The chicken was salty and under cooked. The seven of us all agreed it was the worst chicken dinner we ever were served. KFC would have been a welcomed. $81.00 plus 15% tip. We laughed about the experience the rest of the week. Very Disappointing. read more
