Hands Down, One of the BEST Fried Chicken Joints in the World. Chicken Mary's is about 100 miles south of Kansas City, near Pittsburg, Kansas, in the southeast corner of the state. I hunt down here and every time I come here to eat their fried chicken. I keep trying to convince my family it's worth the 1.75 hour round-trip drive, but they don't believe me. It is. Forget about Stroud's; I had a poor experience there and was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed (there's a review and pictures). And to add to the intrigue, there is another great fried chicken restaurant a stone's throw down the street, Chicken Annie's, and both are embroiled in a good, old-fashioned rivalry to claim bragging rights. When you come to Chicken Mary's, I highly, highly, highly recommend you get Mary's Choice ($10.25) and she'll give you one large dark piece, one large white piece, one large wing, and one large back piece of fried goodness, along with a choice of three sides! The sides are: German potato salad, baked potato, Susie Q's (curly fries), applesauce, German slaw (vinegar-based), creamy slaw (sweeter), mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, baked beans, spaghetti, cottage cheese, or macaroni and cheese; whew! That what I and my friend ordered; we also got a side of jalapeno poppers--yum! OK, back to the chicken. The batter they use is so delicious and perfectly flavored for frying--the chicken comes out with a proverbial coat of fried armor that's so crispy and full, it sets the bar extremely high for what fried chicken should be, so it will effectively ruin fried chicken for you if you're not from Pittsburg, Kansas. The first bite of every piece is my favorite because crunching into that perfectly-made piece of fried goodness, hearing that loud crunch is sooooo satisfying to all your senses. As for the side, they are solid--you're in a small town, eating good, typical sides that compliment the star of the meal very well. I love this place and love that I come here twice per year (once in the spring and once in the winter) so I don't overdo it and it becomes routine--not that it would be a bad thing at all, but it keeps in special to me. I won't give up on bringing my family to have them experience this place for themselves. There's a great attraction not too far called Big Brutus, the second-largest electric tractor/crane/shovel, which is the centerpiece of a mining museum in West Mineral, Kansas, where it was used in coal strip mining operations. Ahh! The fabled Chicken Mary's I've heard so much about ... My sister moved to Joplin MO three years ago and has raved about their meals at Chicken Mary's ever since. I am so glad to finally visit, and I am so happy they took me to Chicken Mary's! Now, it's not a fancy place y'all. In fact, there's kind of a ... I dunno ... "low rent" and "middle of nowhere" and "I-have-no-idea-what-the-world-is-like-outside-of-Kansas" vibe . They have plastic covered tablecloths, offer their version of white white white Wonderbread as an appetizer, and serve your meal on melamine plates divided into three sections. You'll see a lot of plus-sized hard working farm people, their screeching offspring, and blue-haired church ladies who give strangers (like me) the Side-Eye. Ignore them and eat, because the food is really -really- good! I had a "Large Dark" plate with a fried chicken thigh, German potato salad, German slaw, and baked beans. It was off-the-charts delicious. The potato salad and slaw was almost as good as the chicken. The food was awesome. The service was pretty standard. The dining room atmosphere left a bit to be desired. The men's restroom was like something out a horror film. It stank to high heaven; there were bits of toilet paper (?) on the sticky floor; and, um, I'm just glad that I didn't use the restroom before we were seated to eat ... First of all the service was fantastic, our waitress was knowledgeable of the menu and gave us plenty of time to order- she even gave us recommendations on what was good. My food came out hot and fresh and it was definitely the kind of food that makes you feel full while having plenty of flavor. Had heard about "a locally famous chicken place" in Pittsburgh, probably while searching for good fried chicken in Kansas City / OP. So on the way back from a road trip to Dallas, we diverted over to this restaurant. Checked Yelp for address/directions, and learned there were two places next to each other - Chicken Annie's and Chicken Mary's -- and the latter showed 4.5 stars while the former showed 3.5 stars. Annies looked a bit nicer on the outside, but a block or two later (moving east to west) we arrived at Mary's. BEST. FRIED. CHICKEN. EVER. We started with fried chicken livers as an appetizer (normally my entree), and I believe, they too, were the best I've ever had. Crispy and moist on the inside. Got a plate with 4 pieces of chicken - large breast, thigh, maybe another thigh, and a wing -- along with choice of 3 sides. I chose green beans, German cole slaw and mashed taters with cream gravy. Chicken - 5+ Stars (best in my life) - Why? Crispy, Hot, Juicy, yet not greasy, perfectly cooked inside, tasty. The mashed taters were passable -- didn't strike me as noteworthy, but I didn't care, given the amazing chicken. Green beans were also fine but not exceptional (no pork drippings or onion; just kinda boiled). The German cole slaw was also 5 stars - vinegary and fresh. They also offered creamy cole slaw, but I chose the German to limit the fat overload. That huge platter of food was priced at $10.25, so an excellent deal, compared to big city prices (woulda been $18 or more at Strouds, and 1/4 the quality). And we brought home 3 pieces from the plate (since we also had the livers). In the afterglow, we agreed that the meal was so good, we'd consider a day trip in the future with friends from Overland Park (about a 2 hour drive) to share the delights. read more

I would never have expected to find really GOOD fried chicken outside the South, but, well, there we were in the Midwest eating some of the best damn fried chicken I've had the pleasure of slamming into my gob. I ordered the fried backs, as I'm a back man from way back. (Don't knock chicken backs until you've tried them. Just DON'T.) The backs are cut differently than most, thus leaving a LOT of dark meat from the thighs. (I'm a dark meat guy, kid. Like many of my friends in the area, we are Chicken Mary's loyal. Both are better than good. I am a fan of their livers but I watched my table mates chow on 3 and 4 piece dark and mixed until their was little left of the chicken but a memory. I like the sides better at Mary's. The German cole slaw is so good you could - and some have - gotten the slaw as all three of their side choices. Green beans with a little bit of a kick to 'em and decent Susies and mac n cheese. Mashed taters come with cream gravy. The bread basket is good ol' Midwest white. Get some O-rings for starters and share with the table. These aren't big round onion slices but more like what a bloomin' onion would look like if you shredded it. Big tables long enough for your whole extended family. Prompt, steady service. Plates come and tea gets filled. that's all you need. This is as good if not better than any fried chicken you ever had. And I got out of the place paying for 5 people for less than $60. read more

After seeing them on food network we had to road trip to try it. A 2 hour drive later we had a less than stellar experience. We ordered the family style dinner for 4 12 PC dinner. The chicken was fine, there was no seasoning all you got for flavor was flour. Our 12 PC dinner had 3 backs and only 1 anemic breast 2 1/2 legs (one looked like it came off a wing) 2 wings and a thigh. The mashed potatoes were bland and the gravy was milk and flour no chicken flavor. The cold German potato salad was very good and so was the German slaw. The onion straws were fantastic. Dry bread was kind of a let down, biscuits would have gone with it better. The service made the experience oh so special. I believe her name was Ashley was either new first day or just incompetant. When we sat down, got 2 napkins and our silverware. First thing after bring us tea, asked what we wanted to order. We told her that we had never been there the she responded with "oh so do you want to order now". We had to ask for a few minutes, 2-3 minutes later she asks for our order. So we ordered the family dinner for 4. Our food as described above shows up and we never saw her again. If you have had the onion straws and the chicken you need more than 1 napkin. We did not see here again until she brought us the check. Not a pop by or a refill nothing. The comical part was she brought us 1 take away box for the leftovers. When we asked for a few more for the sides and chicken she asked what 2 more? They placed a large family party of 16 in the section and we never saw her again. As a kid growing up in this general area, I ate a lot of Chicken Mary's during the 80s. Since my teens, I hadn't had it. My dad and stepmom rave about their fried chicken and I decided it might be fun for us to meet there over Father's Day weekend for a meal. It turned out to be a great idea and even my somewhat picky pescetarian husband enjoyed his food (they offer cod and shrimp). The atmosphere is homey and outdated but the restaurant is very large. Service was good and the food came out quick even though they were really busy with lots of large parties. We got there at 4 pm when they opened, hoping to avoid crowds but there was a line of 30 or so people waiting to get in. It wasn't a problem at all for their clearly seasoned staff. My food was great. I usually do not eat chicken on the bone and probably hadn't had it in 15 years. But I ordered the one large white piece and it was a truly delicious juicy breast with tasty breading that was slightly greasy but in the appropriate way for "down home" fried chicken, not overly greasy. The taste was clean, like the oil they use is well maintained. The spaghetti with its tasty yet watery sauce and creamy cole slaw were both awesome as well. I've never been big on the Frontenac (Italian style) bread, but they give you a ton of spread for it which helps. The entire meal tasted EXACTLY like I remembered it from years ago which was pretty impressive! I appreciated it more now, having been to a few other places of this same style that offered really poor sides and badly cooked food. Chicken Mary's is the real deal. I kept thinking "do I really rate this place 5 stars?" but between the quick service, low prices, quality food, and nostalgia, I do feel it deserves that rating. We were all happy with the meal. Hands down the best fried chicken I've ever had. I graduated from PSU and went here often. I never fail to visit when I'm visiting relatives nearby. The chicken is fried to perfection, and you get your money's worth in portion size. The German potato salad was new to me, but I've since come to prefer it over mustard potato salad. It's not uncommon in Pittsburg to hear people ask "Mary's or Annie's?"; referring to another fine chicken place literally next door. It's akin to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry over their favorites. I loaded up, knowing full well that I'd be carrying home much of my dinner for breakfast the best day. The chicken dinner for two allowed me to sample a full range of sides as well as tuck into some of the best fried chicken I've had in awhile. This is a family place, full of locals who appreciate a good chicken dinner. The chicken itself was nicely done, seasoned lightly and not over cooked. Like I said, just right. Chicken Mary's is a regular stop for us when we're in the area. It's a big, old family friendly restaurant that probably looks a lot like it did in the 70's, maybe earlier. Don't come for the ambience. It's all about the chicken here. The spices are nothing special,as far as I'm concerned, but however they do it, the chicken is unbelievably tender and juicy, even our favorite, the "wishbone" which would be most susceptible to dryness. As for the sides, the locals are thrilled by the German potato salad. They also have German slaw (both are vinegar based - no mayo). For me, both of these are good, but not worth traveling for. The onion rings are the thin kind, cooked and seasoned perfectly - excellent. Don't tell my doctor, but on several occasions, I've also had chicken livers, which are also very good. Historically, they've always had 3 sides with their dinners, two if you make one a dinner salad. Recently, they've added a "lighter side" selection that only has two sides. There is nothing light about these selections from a calorie standpoint. Service has always been friendly and pretty attentive. If you're within 50 miles or so, you should try to get over to Chicken Mary's - it's worth seeking out, especially if you're a fried chicken aficionado (maybe 100 miles then). Tip: On Friday nights during football season, everybody is at the game, so it's a lot less crowded than Saturday. read more

One of the few chicken places I am stopping at while I am in the area is this one. All my life I've been around chicken and loving it for years. To find this restaurant near the Kansas Missouri border was a treat for me. Here's why. The staff was really nice when our party of five got there. I liked our waitress and she was bringing out our food as quick as she could. They also give you bread to start out before you move onto other menu choices. We had the onion rings for an appetizer for the whole group. They're shoestring onion rings, but they were a nice flavor and better than the ones I've had in Houston over the years. We really enjoyed those before we decided all the good chicken choices. I had the Mary's Choice, which comes with four pieces of chicken, and three sides. My sides were the Susie Q's, the macaroni, and the green beans. I was in the zone on the chicken because I couldn't get over how delectable this was and the flavor it had to offer. Plus the sides were a decent appeal to the presentation and the tastes. I finished my plate, which explains that I was "in love" with this chicken plate. Now I see why people told me you'll run into some awesome chicken restaurants around this are. They were right! I grew up in KC and my family would usually drive down to visit my grandparents in Frontenac a few times each year, and every time we would absolutely have to go to Chicken Mary's! We'd always start with a big basket of onion rings, which are actually more strips than rings. Lighted breaded and fried to perfection! They're probably still my favorite onion ring out there, possibly because you don't see them prepared that we too often. So good! The fried chicken has a little more breading than others (like Chicken Annie's) that's nicely seasoned, crispy on the outside while still hot and juicy on the inside. I'm more of a dark meat fan so I usually got the a leg/thigh dinner, it's nice that you can order exactly the pieces you want, even a wishbone or a gizzard. Dinners come with 3 sides and there's about a dozen to choose from, good stuff like mashed potato w/ gravy, spaghetti (?!), German potato salad, and even applesause. And of course no meal is complete in that neck of the woods without some fantastic Frontenac bread! Sadly I haven't eaten at Chicken Mary's for many years now, I just don't get down to that area very often. And when I do it seems like it's always on a Monday (closed) or before 4pm (not open yet). So if I can't make it there I figured why not bring Chicken Mary's to me in Denver! My parents were awesome enough to drive a few hours out of their way on a recent visit to deliver a lot of chicken it to me and a bunch friends. After it was picked up it was cooled down, deep frozen, and packed in dry ice by a friend of my dad's from high school that has a grocery store nearby, big thanks for all the help Dick P!! Food Wars - Denver style! Just because I'm more of a Mary's fan (not by much at all and I think I was mostly just raised that way) doesn't mean I'm not going to also get some chicken from Annie's too, that way we can have our own little competition. On the Travel Channel show they tasted legs, so we got a dozen legs from each place and had a contest to see which was the best. Or at least which had the best leftovers. It was VERY close, with each person having their own reasons for making their choice. In the end Mary's beat Annie's 6 to 4, with a couple of people that were going back and forth, so it could've easily gone the other way. I was told not to even bother with Pichler's Chicken Annie's. Chicken Mary's out in the middle of no where. Right next door to Chicken Annie's. Went out there with my family. A large group of us. They were steady. Quick seating. Friendly service. We ordered a large order of Onion rings/strings. They were pretty good. Nice layer of batter, thinly sliced onions. I'm southern, so everything could use more salt! I could of ate on those the whole night. I was surprised of how many different ways to order chicken... Guess I'm just used to good ole KFC lol I was told by everyone that I want to order the wishbone. So, that is what i got. It comes with 3 sides. I went with Cole slaw, mac n cheese and baked potato. The chicken was cooked to perfection and piping hot. My only disappointment was... I prefer extra crispy mega batter! I also felt it could of used more seasoning and def more salt! Nonetheless, It was very good chicken. Cole slaw was very good. Once again, the southern in me did add some more sugar and pepper, but in general it was fresh, crisp and well made. I had the Chicken Mary's special 4-piece dinner with mashed potatoes and two helpings of green beans. A basket of bread was provided. The chicken was excellent--a nice crispy crust and moist flavorful meat. The breast was nice and juicy. The beans were good too, although not seasoned with ham or bacon. The mashed potatoes and gravy was adequate. The bread was good; however, margarine was provided. I had a small order of onion rings that were absolutely addictive. These onion rings really aren't the big rings that are typical but more of a shredded onion with a very tasty breading. I got the small order and it was more than enough for me. My waitress was rather young, friendly, and attentive. Some training might have been in order. For example, the unused place settings were still left on the table once I was seated. The atmosphere was nice--no TV in sight nor music blaring to distract one from the food and fellow diners. The decibel level was in the 50's. In other words--quiet--except for diners' conversations about the relative merits of the various menu items. I'd happily give Chicken Mary's an extra star or two if butter were used for the bread that calls for an appropriate garnishment and if the beans and potatoes had more ooomph. read more

This restaurant claims to be chicken eaters heaven and, it turns out that's no lie! It's a couple of miles off the country highway we were taking on the Kansas side north to Kansas City and was well worth the detour. The service was also perfect. Want grated cheese with your baked potato? No problem... Just ask :-). The dark meat is a little juicer than the white but the white might be a tad healthier. Lots of reviews say "chicken made to order" when we dined here tonight we recieved our whole meal, onion rings , chicken, sides, drinks , bread all with in 5 to 7 mins of sitting down. About 3 mins from when we ordered. NO WAY was it made to order. Greasy, Chicken and onion rings. Lots of breading, so much that it tasted like uncooked flour. As a person who has eaten a lot of chicken at a lot of chicken places, the chicken and crust itself were fantastic I've heard the hype for 20 plus years and been by it a 1000 times with never a chance to stop but again I will say the chicken and its crispy crust was fantastic.... But and this is a big but nothing else about the experience was even average.... We did get in pretty quick and got seated but waited for 15 minutes for somebody to even acknowledge our presence at the table now granted they were packed but as big and popular as this place is you would think they would have somebody that at least gets you water and utensils right away but no.... Now most people that know me know I'm very generous and forgiving for this kind of service and will most likely tolerate it and never mention it if the meal is outstanding..... But this one wasn't even close.... okay to start off every and I mean every chicken joint I've ever gone to has at least given you warm rolls or warm bread but not here it was cold and dry to boot.... Now on the the mashed potatoes, call me old fashioned but instant potatoes are a large problem for me not sure about anybody else but they are flavorless..... As for the gravy absolutely no flavor at all as I'm guessing it was some sort of canned or simply whipped up nothing I had better white gravy at holiday inn express for me free breakfast just this morning actually and I would say there gravy was way better actually 'holiday inn express that is'... oh and as for the green beans I've had out of a can from always save brand than these were!!! Now I will have to say if you want to feed a family of 4 for $20 bucks this is the place to go chicken is better than KFC but just slightly but the price is way better... Now give me real mashed potatoes and real chicken gravy oh and it should be thick and a little on the tan side not white and runny as milk!!! Throw some bacon in them green beans for flavoring and a nice basket of warm rolls and hell I'd pay $30+ for that meal and that the 2 person not the 4 by the way.... and hell give me good and prompt service I'd do $40+ no problem and hell I'd probably even stick around for dessert for an extra $10 or so!!! Now I understand you may be catering to an older crowd on a fixed income and such so charge me an extra $5 or so to make up for it.... But I will say this everybody was nice and our waitress was apologetic and all so it's all good in the end but I probably what be back and I'm sure not gonna suggest anybody eat there!!! Also I'm sorry you all had to be my lowest scoring ever cause I really always look for the positives in a restaurant but in this case it was just almost impossible to find the good points that is!!! Greatest fried chicken on the planet. Period. When I moved to Kansas City, I was told to try Stroud's. Their chicken tasted like cardboard.

This was a horrible place really let me down fried chicken was dryer than anything, chicken fried stale tasted like it was from a frozen pack, waitress gave one drink, and we never saw her after food was brought, and the bread was dry fries were not salted, and for spending $60 none of us were have and left very disappointed never going back read more
