Came here for dinner on a Friday evening. Space is big with patio, bar area and separate dining quarters. We sat at High Top near bar. The seats in the dining room were hard and metal and we weren't up for that. For food, we ordered the chips with green salsa, Beef Birria, Carne Asada Plate. Food was decent. Salsa Verde and Chips were great. Birria was flavorful but everything else was just sufficient. For drinks we the Aye Papi and PECADO. My husband enjoyed his Aye Papi. I survived the PECADO but it was not my style. PECADO which is suppose to be patron silver + pomegranate tamarindo + orange juice + citrus for $14. On this occasion this drink wasn't cold and I did not enjoy it. All in all, It was a decent experience. I would come back for Happy Hour or if I was in the area for another event. What I like was that they validate up to 2 hours of parking and the music was good.
Every time I have eaten at Chico Malo I have enjoyed the food as has everyone I have dined with here. I think it's delicious! It's def overpriced, but it fits the restaurant's vibe and in this location it is to be expected. Happy hour prices are not bad, but portions are very small. Regular menu portions are plentiful, however. While the food is yummy imo, the drinks are meh. What is lacking for me at Chico Malo is the service. It's pretty slow even when they are not busy and overall I would describe it as absent. It also isn't particularly friendly. This is not make or break it for me but it is at the point that it stands out, I would say. The restaurant inside is cool though! And I love the music. This is definitely a fun place to come to grab some food before a night out.
I visited on a Friday evening after a holiday. The interior is beautiful, and the menu offers a wide range of options, from appetizers to entrées with Mexican and Southwestern influences. However, the overall focus of the menu wasn't clearly defined, and the server was also unable to clarify it. I appreciated the use of fresh ingredients. I tried the shrimp aguachile and the tres leches; both were good. I was surprised by the tres leches presentation, which looked more like three small donuts with ice cream. It tasted good however I would not order it again. I looked around, the dishes at nearby tables were well presented and visually appealing. I will definitely return. Also a notation on parking it looks like the restaurant does validate two hours if you park underneath the cityscape garage. Otherwise half street parking is difficult.
TASTY ENCHILADAS, yet small portions. Typically a enchilada dish comes with rice & beans or some sort of side. Unfortunately, Chico Malo's enchilada order comes with only two medium-size enchiladas and nothing else. I was so lucky to order chips because I would've been completely unsatisfied with this visit. The flavor of my green/red enchiladas was great, however it was missing that extra touch. Chíco Malo prioritizes decoration and presentation, over quantity. However, I believe in a balance of quantity, quality, and presentation. The food isn't the cheapest as it's in a nice location of DT Phoenix so I'm expecting a little more bang for my buck. Service was decent, out server was chill guy. He thoroughly explained the menu and gave us good recommendations. The alcoholic drinks were tasty, I think this is more of an appetizer and booze spot after a trip to Mortgage Matchup. The restaurant is huge, dim, and full of space for large groups. It's inside Cityscape and is full of action during the weekends. Outdoor seating is available.
Another great time at ChicoMalo with friends. Was invited to the suns game and this place just continues to do all the little things right from point of entry the vibe is perfect. Not to much to be over the top just enough to be comfortable and feel like you're at somewhere special. Great news was I was not only with someone special(my wife) we felt special by some friends for the invite. Started with a Frozen Jefe & Como La Flor. So so good I had another! Friends arrived and we smashed the trio&chips. I should have errored and shared with my wife as I forgot how large the portions are here but I messed up and ordered way too much and well at it all! The molcahete was very good and pretty spicy. Only negative was it was so temperature hot it was hard to make a taco but I mean hot food definitely not a bad thing. Wife's barbacoa was on another level we should have just split that and our friends as always crush the pork verde shank. If you've never been this place is a must. The prices are reasonable for 2 people drinks and if you've were to split a plate right around 6-7eventy dollars. Excited to come back thanks for the team absolutely crushing it as always
While in town for a competition, we came across Chico Malo just walking around--and we're so glad we did. The food was so good we ended up coming back three times during our trip. Everything we tried was full of flavor and consistently great each visit. The service was also on point, and the bartenders made really good drinks. The music was an entire vibe too--they kept playing hit after hit, which made the whole experience even better. We would definitely be going back anytime we're in town again.
The inside of the restaurant was fairly quiet when we were there for lunch. It was well decorated and had a cool vibe to it. I got two cocktails, one of which was a bit watery. They're famous for their shrimp aguachile and with good reason. Definitely try it! The elote was flavorful, too. The ceviche was mild in taste, and the salsa was good but not the best I've had. Our server was very friendly but not as attentive as we would've liked.
To begin our birthday weekend getaway, my boyfriend and I went to Chico Malo for dinner and it's a place that I would definitely consider going again! I made a reservation at 5:30pm, and we were seated quickly. The ambiance was lively yet intimate with dim lighting that fit with the Mexican-inspired aesthetic that invited people to party and socialize after a hard day of work. We have a bowl of chips with two different salsas and guacamole as a complimentary appetizer, so we solely ordered our main dishes since we knew from the size of the appetizer would be enough to satisfy us both. Although, I had a smaller appetite than usual that evening, so I tried their Dorados de Papa- a shareable dish, but just the right amount that I needed to get me full, but not painfully so. As for my partner, he ordered the Sea Molcajete that comes with octopus, shrimp, clams, and more to make for one stunning dish. It's a large meal, so if you consider trying it, you better come in ravenous. The server we had was very nice, checked up on us frequently, and even offered to take away a drink I had ordered and ended up not liking (my boyfriend drank it for me). Overall, I'm glad I tried this place out and I would come back again and make sure I have more room to eat more food!
Went to Chico Malo to meet for happy hour on a Wednesday and it was the perfect place to be with the jungle atmosphere in downtown Phoenix, almost forgot I was in AZ! I sat outside on their patio and bar area, the bartender was very attentive and friendly, made great drinks. I didn't order food during this visit but I will be sure too when I go back.
Located just off Jefferson Street in downtown Phoenix, this hip restaurant did not disappoint. Service was attentive and friendly, and the food was delicious and artistically presented for a Mexico City vibe. We started with the Queso Fundido which is served with warm tortillas and was plenty for 4. The shrimp aguachile is presented like art and was delicious. The elote and cheese enchiladas with green sauce were also outstanding. We will be back. Recommended!
Came here as a recommendation from friends. Ambience trendy and clean. Service very friendly and attentive. The waiter makes great recommendations and knows the best orders! Cocktails are amazing. We ordered the trio dip, fresh tortilla chips and amazing salsas. Duck empanadas are also tasty with their mole sauce. The crust is crisp and moist duck filling inside My entree is the pollo con mole and chorizo mashed potato. I like to try moles in various restaurants to see how their take of mole. The chicken is juicer than past chicken mole dishes I had and they give you a hearty cut. The mole is different than I am used to. They incorporate maraschino cherries to the mix gives a tangy depth to it. I personally am not a big fan of that flavor profile. I am not saying it is a poorly made dish, their version of mole is fruity and tangy. When I saw it in the menu I was expecting a chocolate mole rather than a fruity one. Tried barbacoa and it is a must try because it comes with consume! The chorizo mashed potato is a great side to counter the tanginess of the mole. We tried their desserts which is a great ending fried aroz con leche and a chocolate milk cake. It is in the downtown area so a nice place to take a bite and have some cocktail as part of the downtown Phoenix experience
Well, I too had some high expectations for this place. Seeing and hearing about it! I meet up with a co worker here on a Tuesday. It was around 3:30 the place was empty. Hmmm I thought! No one at the bar no one in whole place I believe but employees. Anyways sat at the bar and was greeted by a nice young lady but she gave us only regular menus... (it was happy hour)? Not a deal breaker We ended up trying the ceviche and shrimp stack! Both were good but my favorite was the Ceviche! Spot on! Full of flavor! The Top shelf marg I opted for was just okay. I think the citrus salt on my rim ruined it for me, personally not a salt gal, but I also didn't know it was salt. It looked so pretty I assumed it was something different. I think I would try this place again for dinner though and for date night or girlie upscale din! It is pretty expensive though! Ambiance and decor is great Just know parking down there nightmare but if your close or can lyft that's your best bet. Or even have a nice bestie!

From a food perspective I would give this place a 3.5 star. The food looks good and is good but I didn't think it was amazing by any stretch. With that said, the place has a great vibe! If you like good food with an upscale ambiance this is it. I like the style of the place & it's right in the heart of Phoenix. On Sundays, for brunch they have $20 bottomless margaritas or mimosas need I say more?! I recommend you order something other than the carne asada plate~ I didn't like it. My fiancé ordered the chilaquiles and liked them. If you are looking for good food & a hip ambiance then look no further. The $20 bottomless for brunchies is also #lit. Overall, I would recommend this place to some of my friends but not to others. Ambiance people, people who like to drink should go here. Foodies look elsewhere. Happy eating read more
Overnight in Phoenix and this was in walking distance from our hotel. Great food, service and music and drinks ! We had a great people watching spot, the front patio. They definitely dress to impress in Phoenix ! We were definitely hungry when we got here so honestly I could have eaten everything on the menu. But first drinks! They had a great list of course of margaritas, so I had the Alebrije , mezcal, hibiscus, ginger, lime and mint, fabulous and pretty! Only if you like the Smokey taste of mezcal. Friends had the La sirena, very tropical! The wild thots, also a pretty drink, and very fruity. Great drinks! Started with the ceviche verde, sea bass, avocado, lime, onion, cucumber, jicama, jalapeño salsa verde, with homemade tortilla chips, the sea bass was delicious, all the other components made this a fresh, tasty , great appetizer. Loved it. The chicken quesadillas ,were full of chicken, cheese and onions, and served with great sauces, nicely grilled so the tortillas were crispy too. The scallops were my favorite. Seared perfectly. With a fabulous cauliflower mole, bacon, charred broccoli, visually very appetizing, and the combination all worked. The Smokey bacon flavor, the broccoli, crunchy and the smoothness of the scallops. So good. The side that got my attention was chorizo mashed potatoes, so that was an extra, fresh and great flavor from the chorizo. With delicious cheese on top, again I could have eaten it all, this is a must get side. Unusual but a winner. Everything here was great. Loved the modern vibe, fabulous music, big town feel. Dropped in for some drinks and appetizers while visiting Phoenix. Chico Malo instantly caught my eye with its dramatic Latin design. The restaurant has great ambience - lots of Latin art around the restaurant with Latin music playing all day long. The menu includes lots of Latin inspired food options and a lot of tequila options. The service was decent, we were seated right away but didn't see much of our waitress. We ordered the guac and chips and a couple cocktails. El Caballero is a bourbon and tequila drink - it's VERY strong. The Mango and Chile is very good! As is the regular house margarita. The guac was very bland but the chips were good - they seem to be made in-house which is always a plus. I would have rated this place higher if the guac wasn't so bland. 3/5 stars for now, I plan to come back and try some entrees next time! read more

Amazing food, staff and environment. Food has authentic Mexican taste, ordered chicken taco in the kids menu and it came with 3. Corn tortillas taste home made. Chilaquiles come with green salsa and an egg. Service was fast, attentive and friendly. Brunch special has bottomless mimosas, margaritas and 2Xs for a limit of 2 hours. read more

Arrived with friends(party of 5) for Sunday eats. We were seated within 5 mins. Our waiter took our drink orders suggested things on the menu to try, he was super helpful and adorable. Food was great, everyone enjoyed their meals. We started out with chips and salsa Trio (not pictured) and the all of us had different meals, which were all delish. The music selection during our dining experience was great. A mix of the old and new tunes. Decor was aesthetically pleasing, it was a good dining experience from entrance to exit. read more

We came here with a large group and had a great time! We opted to order and eat family style, which I highly recommend so you can try all of the different offerings. Everything was delicious. The guacamole was good but not as chunky as I prefer it. The service was fantastic and the drinks are strong and tasty. I would come back here in a heartbeat! read more

First time here The drinks were strong and delicious The pork Shrimp Chicken Filet were ordered at our table . The Chile Relleno or the brick chicken were the least spicy the shrimp was very spicy and the pork was spicy. Large bar patio area they keep open (maybe bundle up now that's it's getting cooler), great cozy ambiance for evenings, and conveniently located in the heart of CityScape. What blew me away was the attention to detail our server/bartender had when we ordered drinks. We wandered in here to wait for another reservation, but one individual didn't like tequila amidst this ~tequila bar~ we had entered. Despite this, he found a drink based upon what she likes in a drink. Good mask use by employees, and keep your mask on until you reach your table, keep it on when you use the restroom, etc. I also saw they have a $20 2-hr limit bottomless brunch drinks (mimosa, margs, draft beer) Sat-Sun from 11am to 3pm that sounds wonderfully dangerous... read more
The decor and interior of the restaurant are beautiful. We got seated right away and began to look over the menu. The waiter was really pushy about getting appetizers put in right away and we barely glanced at the menu. We got the salsa verde and queso fundido. The chips and salsa came out right away. We proceeded to order white sangria and the cheese quesadillas. The sangria was horrible do not recommend it, not fruity and sweet more dry and bland. Time goes by and the fundido never comes to the table. At this point our food arrives and we tell the waiter about the fundido and he never put the order in. First time and absolutely won't be my last!! The staff is very lively and welcoming. We meet friends here for drinks and dinner for our frequent Friday date nights. The shrimp ceviche was hands down the best I've had! It paired perfectly with their nice selection of craft cocktails. The topper was our dinner we ordered the surf & turf. The presentation of the rosemary being lit at the table made our guest ask what we get!! Lol... can't wait to return! read more

God bless friends. Because they're the only ones that can get a yelp veteran (lol) to hop in their car and drive to downtown Phx for a food spot like this, that serves out abominations along with a hefty price tag. Was invited here for a birthday dinner and decided to look at the menu/pics online first. My original plan was to go to CVS nearby, get double stuf oreos and come here to get a drink to go along with my oreos. But I didn't want to be "that guy". So I ordered the "CHICHARRÓN DE RIBEYE", that was in the "chips" section for some reason. The server said "we moved it there because we figured it was a meal that could be shared among the table". When I got my order (after 40+ minutes), I asked myself how 10 pieces of meat cubes could be shared among actual adults? OR perhaps he meant toddlers? I also loved the 3 stale/hardened/barely cooked tortillas. The ribeye was flavorless. Not an ounce of seasoning. My friend ordered the "ACHIOTE BRICK CHICKEN" that looked like sliced costco chicken. I tasted that was well. Also flavorless. This place gets 2 stars for the ambiance aka the selling point of a restaurant like this. This is the place to come if you want to vlog or take IG pics of a $165 tomahawk steak along with the flame presentation that it comes with. I wouldn't come here to actually eat. I'm not sure if this would qualify as Mexican/Mexican fusion/Mexican influenced in any sector of the multiverse. It's almost a crime to come to a spot like this while living in the southwest/west. The only time you should eat here is if you live in Utah or Idaho and they decide to open a location there. read more

Awesome happy hour! My husband and I are visiting Phoenix for the first time and needed to kill some time before a show. We found this place with a great happy hour! As of 10/25/22, their happy hour is everyday from 3pm-6pm (per Downtown Phoenix website). We were sat immediately at the bar, the bartender took great care of us! The Paloma and house margarita were delicious. We also tried the ceviche verde and the elote - yum! Staff were friendly, food and cocktails were great. Loved it! read more
This is a great place to attend before and after sporting events and concerts downtown and is conveniently located next to Copper Blues Live if you're going to a comedy show. Good Happy Hour deals, excellent waitstaff, & awesome appetizers, along with full-blown meals make this an amazing place to be as I found out. My friend and I came here before an Arizona Rattlers game and enjoyed some beer and appetizers. I will gladly go back! The ONLY bummer is walking through the light rail construction to get there and you have to really look to spot their sign outside. read more

It was very busy, but luckily we had a reservation to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant was well decorated and was very open, I liked that there was plenty of space between tables. They had a lot of open tables, and staff seemed to be running around so maybe it was understaffed on Sunday. Our server was ok, again just seemed to be running around and not attentive or personable. I felt bad asking for things like silverware, another drink, more tortillas, or for their dessert options. For the drinks, we got their Mango Y Chile margarita: very good, a little thick and syrupy, but overall yummy and would order again. The other drink was the aspero? (A fruity mezcal drink, I forgot the name unfortunately.) it was sugary/syrupy which was not expected but it was ok, but probably would not order again. The food on the other hand was impressive. We ordered the carne asada and the birria. They both were extraordinary! The carne asada was pretty good and Came with beans and potatoes. The presentation of the food was fun. The star of the show was the birria. For the price, I cannot believe how much birria we were given. It was served with 3 tortillas, and we ended up being able to make 3 more tacos with our leftovers. The meat was incredibly flavorful, you could tell how much time they put into it. They had either ice cream or churros for dessert. We went with the churros just to get something fun to celebrate. Extremely sugary that it was coming off in clumps, but yummy nonetheless. Fluffy on the inside, Loved the caramel sauce served with it. Our waiter forgot our chips and salsa, but honestly we didn't need it with how much food we got. Gave Chico Malo a 4 for the atmosphere, the portion sizes, and the amazing food. read more

Had dinner here the other night and it was really good! The chips and salsa were great, highly recommend adding the guacamole! I ordered the cauliflower entree and my friend got the enchiladas; both were great. The drinks were amazing, loved them! Service was good, staff was friendly...the only reason for my 4 stars is because of the bathroom situation. There are only two stalls for women in the whole place and on a Saturday night downtown, it was really busy. Each time we went, we stood in a very long line! But...the view of the pop up ice skating rink was an added touch! Definitely recommend!! read more

This was my first stop after arriving in Phoenix based on a bell hops recommendation when I asked where I could get some good tacos nearby. He was spot on. Located just a few blocks from my hotel, Chico Malo was fantastic. I ate at the bar, as I was in a hurry to meet people, and starving. I had the pastor tacos. As someone who eats a lot of tacos, I can tell you these pastor tacos were some of the best I've ever had. The tortillas are made at the restaurant, and they are fantastic. The pinto beans were perfectly creamy with a good amount of heat. They paired perfectly with the rice. The past was out of this world. They meat was thoroughly seasoned. The salsa provided the perfect amount of heat, and the pineapple was grilled to perfection to provide an amazing balance of sweet and acidity to the tacos. I would have gone back if I didn't have other commitments to attend to, and it will be my first stop the next time I'm back in Phoenix. read more
Chico Malo has a fantastic urban-industrial vibe, with a modern Mexican menu that features everything from updated classics to new twists and craft cocktails. I got the carne asada It was phenomenal!! The service was super superb. The manager even offered to run to their sister restaurant to get simple sonic for my husband for his salad. We didn't take him up on the offer but wow!!!! what customer service they had. the restaurant had a great ambience we sat outside. It was beautiful with light and heaters. This is a solid place! We came here for dinner and it was packed. They only had the lounge available which was fine with us. We both ordered drinks. I got a spicy margarita and it was spicy and had great flavor! We got the trio dips which was so good! The salsa verde was our favorite. The guacamole also had great flavor. The carne asada was so good! It came in a smoked dome which was amazing. We shared the main dish and it was more then enough food. The steak had great flavor and the potatoes were so good! Great food, amazing ambiance, wonderful service, make a reservation! We discovered this establishment last time we were in Phoenix and had to come back for dinner before the Suns game! The food is so good and the drinks are super tasty. We made a reservation and got their when the restaurant was a little slow, but it got super busy after and there seemed to be a pretty big wait. We were sat at the high tops, which meant we were served by the bartenders and they were all amazing. I have nothing bad to say about this place. This was oir first time at Chico Malo on a Friday night. We made a reservation and were seated promptly. Our sever was very attentive and made some grest suggestions on drinks and food. My wife had the old fashioned and it did not dissapoint. The pork verde was very tender and fall of the bone. The al pastor came out on a hot smoky skillet that was a grest portion for her.Our Server Khalil made sure we had a grest dining experience. That seems to be hard to find now a days . Genuinely disappointed in every aspect of Chico Malo. We stopped in on a Thursday night and we were looking forward to a great meal for our last night in Phoenix. We waited 20 plus minutes for 3 drinks, we were never checked on, our queso came with only three tortillas to dip with, one of our entrees was cold, and we saw a cockroach in the womens bathroom. Nothing about our experience at Chico Malo justified the outrageous prices. Definitely won't be back next time we're in town. read more
I feel like it's at this a lot lately but it was just kind of meh. We got there at 11 AM on Saturday for Brunch and it was completely empty, our server was actually really great. We did bottomless mimosas and the Chilla Quiles in Carne Asada and eggs, just OK not a lot of flavor at all, and I'm not a fan of chiliquiles with chips - it should be done with corn tortillas. I feel like the best part was the Mexican candy shot, otherwise I was underwhelmed read more

Does Chico Malo have gluten free options? If so, is there risk for contamination, like do they change gloves and prepare gluten free dishes in a gluten free area and have a dedicated fryer?
Yes we have a number of gluten free options and are able to provide a safe dining experience. For things like chips our chef team will fry fresh in a separate pot or bake to ensure no cross contamination. Hope that helps!
Are they still doing happy hour post Covid?
Yes! 3-6pm every day (3-4pm on major event days) and we have bottomless margaritas, mimosas and draft beer from 11am-3pm Saturday and Sunday mornings during brunch.
Is Chico Malo only 21+ or are families able to go as well?
