Super delicious and super fresh. The Crudo was the perfect bite. The fried veggies (cant remember name but hot damn it was delish) the spring wedge was amazing. The ranch was hella fresh and another perfect bite. Chicken sandwich was bomb and the clams and mussels were savory and on point. We finished with the dessert of the day. Strawberry shortcake. Best. Too dazzling summer house salads to start. Cocktails were strong and creative. Capped it off with the best ice cream and sorbet trio that we have ever eaten. Cardomam, Fresh Strawberry, and the most-fresh Mint Chocolate Chip (all invented and made in-house). Service had a small issue, but it was clearly a fluke. Four of us popped in for lunch today based on a friend's recommendation. Server was friendly and efficient. Lunch menu offered an interesting variety albeit a limited selection. Food was locally sourced. We ordered the squash and corn hush puppies with green goddess dip and hot sauce. Didn't care for the hot sauce but the hush puppies were delicious. Two of us ordered the fried green tomato po' boy. My friend who is from Louisiana said the po' boy bread was supposed to be soft, not hard crusty bread. The sandwich was just ok, needed more aioli. Another friend got the toast with wgipped ricotta cheese, chicory, golden raisins, and anchovies, but held the anchovies. It was beautifully presented but she said the flavor was just ok. The 4th friend ordered the pulled pork sandwich and said it was good. The chips appeared home made and seasoned. We considered ordering dessert but couldn't get our server's attention in the sparsely occupied restaurant. He did not ask if we were interested in dessert when he brought our check and by that time we had decided to go elsewhere for dessert. Negatives: noise level in the high ceilinged building was deafening and we could barely hear each other. We recommend some fabric baffles someplace. Restrooms were VERY clean and beautifully decorated with bold wallpaper. I believe in visiting a restaurant 2 or 3 times before writing it off so I plan to go back for dinner sometime and see if it's a little better. read more

One of the best dinners I've had in the Olympia area in a long time. Cozy atmosphere and comfortable setting, a bit louder than expected but enjoyable. Had reservations (highly recommended), showed up on time and was seated promptly. Service host and other staff were all very polite and all appeared to enjoy their work and interacting with customers. First ordered the smelt along with some grilled carrots. Both tasted so much better than expected, seasoned perfectly. The carrots were grilled nicely and had a cheese whip with carrots greens. These could be a meal all by themselves. I never thought I'd describe carrots as "hearty", but that's what these were. I never had smelt before. These were fantastic. Served with peas and micro greens. No fishy taste at all and super tender, yet meaty. The homemade chips were the best I've ever had by far. Usually homemade chips are greasy or too crispy. These chips were light and thin, crispy but not overly crunchy. Just perfectly prepared. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich, served with good pimento cheese, pickles, and a biscuit, was not flavored too well. I expected a spicy sandwich with a hot sauce, but found neither. The chicken itself was moist, but the crust was over cooked. It was overly crispy. The pork cheeks with grits was AMAZING. So savory, tender, and full of flavor. The grits would be able to stand alone as its own meal. I highly recommend this dish and I would order it again in a heartbeat. We'll be going again, no doubt. read more

I had a fantastic lunch at Chicory today. I went online to make reservation for a late afternoon lunch. Their website mentions the chef was recently on Chopped on the Food Network which is pretty exciting. The menu on the website was slightly different than what was available today but standards like their Nashville hot chicken and the pork cheeks were available which were items I wanted to try. For a starter I got the asparagus that lays atop a divine green garlic pesto with beet pickled eggs and grated Parmesan (I believe) and some pretty orange flowers. This dish screamed Easter on a plate with the vibrant colors. I've seen pickled eggs in jars before and didn't understand why a person would ever pickle an egg, but after eating this dish it was a party in my mouth that balanced amazingly with the garlicky pesto and fresh asparagus. For my main I selected the Nashville hot chicken which is served on a biscuit with pimento cheese, a fine diced green thing that was reminiscent of a relish (I should have snapped a pic of the menu) and pickles on the side. I chose the Cajun chips for my side. The sandwich was spicy, creamy, homey, and refined all at the same time. The chicken was moist and fried to perfection. I ordered a full rack of ribs to go for my family since it's available in the weekends. The ribs have a peppery rub and fell off the bone. The sauce was savory with just a bit of sweetness. As mentioned by others they include 20% gratuity automatically on all dine in orders. Parking is metered on the street. It's in the space that was once occupied by Hart's Mesa which I truly enjoyed. So, I'm glad we have another fantastic restaurant in the space. read more

Last spring when I first ate at Chicory, the first dish hit our table was a humble raw zucchini "carpaccio" with walnut sauce and fried squash blossoms. The care and respect given to highlight the a simple zucchini was astounding, and evidenced that Chicory was bound and determined to give us dining experiences that elevate local ingredients. Flash forward a year (and a pandemic of a year to boot), and countless takeout meals and a couple of recent dine-in opportunities, and the quality and creativity has not waned in the slightest. Chef Elise is a wizard with veggies and meats. Whether it's the blackened carrots with whipped feta or smoked and pickled clams or duck (OMG the DUCK!), the food is spectacular and beautiful and tasty tasty. And then there is the front-of-house. The ambiance is warm and inviting. An old Wurlitzer and turn table compliment the aesthetic. But the real gem is staff, especially Adam, whose enthusiasm for the food and drinks are so delightful. Adam has such a great knowledge of wine and spirits, and keeps a distinct collection of natural and local wines that you won't find in any other restaurant. TL:DR - Chicory's food, drink, and service are terrific. Elevated local fare with southern/creole preparation. read more

It's the best fried chicken I've ever had on a scrumptious biscuit w/ pimento cheese (what the F is this DREAM?!) and thin little pickles... We ordered too much food last night (everything is so good) and I ended up having to take 75% of my beloved sandwich home. I was absolutely stuffed, but promptly got high and gobbled the rest of it while watching a true crime documentary on Netflix. Best Saturday night ever. It is now morning and I am genuinely crestfallen that I don't have more sandwich. This particular concoction aside, Chicory knocks it out of the park in every way. The owners are kind, creative, skilled AF & wonderful, the cocktails are always killer, and I don't think I've ever had anything there that I didn't enjoy. I even love their menu design. I had their classic shrimp and grits which did not have tomato of any sort and had greens so it was different than I'm used to but was just spicy enough and very rich in flavor. For the last 3 years, the Olympic seafood company has been my favorite restaurant (have you had their jumbo scallops?). I've been looking for a real restaurant to call my favorite restaurant, and this is it. Sorry we were too excited to eat that we didn't take pictures of all the dishes in their full form... My boyfriend and I looked at the menu ahead of time and called to give a heads up that we'd be ordering the Whole Blackened Rockfish (not mandatory). Our reservation was half an hour before restaurant closing and we didn't want to be the last ones holding everyone up. The fish came out in gargantuan form, well worth the price and could feed us both on its own. Fresh, seasoned and blackened to perfection. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. You can tell from the photos that we left no fish behind. My boyfriend couldn't stop raving about the dirty rice. It had just as much flavor from the fish, and fun pot sticker chunks. Albacore Crudeau - this wasnt on the menu online and Adam informed us the albacore was delivered one day prior. The albacore was paired with watermelon, mint and a cute dollop of something creamy. The watermelon complemented the texture of the albacore very well. I'd compare the quality of this dish to that of a high end sushi restaurant, but for a fraction of the price. We could taste that the Sheep's Milk Galette was made from the finest ingredients. The presentation with the naturtium was beautiful. In general I'm not the biggest parsley fan, so you know the dish is good when the chef can make even parsley taste amazing to me. We had heard about the restaurant from The Olympian article, and knew about the chef's Cajun heritage. We were very excited to try the Boudin and it did not disappoint! The sausage's flavor was smoky, but not over powering and texture enlightening. It's production showcased top notch technique. Our waitress recommended we spread the inside of the Boudin on the saltines with a spoon. We definitely did that, and enjoyed eating the skin of the sausage as well. I must now rave about the bread and butter beans. The pairing was well thought out, and the pickled beans reminded me of a dish I've had previously in NYC at Blue Hill Stone Barns. Yum. For drinks, we shared three cocktails: Arc Flash, Haymaker and chicory Manhattan - all spot on. Would come here just for the bar if bar stools existed these COVID days... I've lived in many cities - Toronto, SF, Pittsburgh, NY, and LA, before moving to Olympia, yet can still confidently say this is one of my top three favorite dinner dates I've had. Even tipping on top of their 20% gratuity, I still feel like we left with a steal of a deal. I'm very excited Elise and Adam have chosen to open their restaurant in Olympia. Bonus part of our meal - there was no judgement when I pulled out my own Tupperware to pack away the leftovers (aiming for zero waste). New to the area, so trying out all the local places we can. Stopped by Chicory for dinner. The restaurant is cute, decorated in dark colors and eclectic lighting. The staff was friendly and on point with their service. Pricing was on par with the area (~$25-35 for an entrée). The menu is fluid, revolving around a hipster take on southern fare (e.g. shrimp and grits, gumbo, etc...). The dishes were well prepared and looked awesome. Unfortunately, the taste of the food was hit or miss. The shrimp and grits was overly peppery (I bit into whole pepper corns), and the osso buco turned out to be beef shank on a bed of whole parsley. It wasn't "bad" per se, but I think may suffer from better in theory than in practice. We tried their fried green tomatoes and those were yummy. From what I gather, Chicory is new to the area, so we'll give them another shot down the road to see if their menu settles in. read more

I ordered a beef pasta dish where the pasta was undercooked and the beef serving was suitable for a small child. The biscuits were good. So biscuits, the pasta dish, a squash dish and a side salad. I initially was so excited about Chicory but the last two times we've been there have been somewhat disappointing. The kitchen seems to increasingly favor what I would call "discordant" flavors that really take away from the fine quality of the food. I had the Lamb Remoulade this week. The lamb itself was very good but was presented on a bed of lentils so same brown color and not a flavor combination that enhanced the lamb at all! A bed of potatoes or greens would have been perfect. The garlic scapes, which I usually adore, were not very flavorful and also didn't add to the dish. My daughter had the chickpea fritters and the chilled almond soup which were fine but not great. Hope this trend of clashing flavors goes away pronto! read more

My party went to Chicory for a parent's date night out and had the best time! The service was wonderful. Our waitress gave recommendations, checked in on us frequently, and the food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. They had an in-house piano player that was entertaining and helped to create a wonderful ambiance. For drinks, we ordered the Manhattan, the Für Elise, and the Bellwether. For appetizers, we ordered the duck boudin and the whipped ricotta on sourdough. For entrees, we ordered the kabocha squash soup, the osso bucco, and the smoked beet galette. For dessert, we ordered the fennel panna cotta. The presentation of the food and drinks was beautiful! The food was itself was flavorful and in season. The drinks were fragrant and well made. The only critique we have is that the osso bucco was a smidge well done for my partner's taste. It was a wonderful night out and I recommend that everyone treat themselves to an experience at Chicory at least once. read more

Sorry, I nearly have to fail this local favorite. I owe them another shot, maybe. Wife and I went for dinner and were sorely disappointed, nothing hit the spot or impressed, mostly just felt odd and mismatched. Believe we had cod toasts (terrible texture, regrettable), a shrimp soup attempt gumbo. Spicy, yet flavorless, with too little broth to do much of anything with except cry into it for nuance and depth. Service was awkward, many to one table deal, everybody in a t shirt, so you're wondering whether perhaps the patron near you simply doesn't wish for their salad amalgam any longer. Sorry. It was bad. Simplistic monikers and generalizations cannot apply to the meal I just had at Chicory. Rather, this is a restaurant with an impressive array of menu items running from the approachable (Nashville hot chicken) to the truly novel (off menu items like tuna heart radicchio). Every item has a fantastic attention to detail where every single element of each dish is intentional and noteworthy. What do I mean? A chicken fried rutabaga is accentuated with nutty elements from Mexican salsa macha and a handful of wheatberries. The smelt toast achieves maximum flavor from pairing the deboned smelt with thin layers of turnip over toast. The encyclopedia of ideas that go into making these dishes is truly outstanding and far beyond what would expect outside the walls of major cities like NYC, Chicago, DC, SF and LA. I'm not only saying Chicory would survive in those food meccas. Instead, I'm saying it would thrive. Larger dishes - while perhaps taking slightly less chances than some of the smaller items - are no less flavorful and exciting. The braised beef short ribs achieve some of the best taste I have found anywhere. The duck breast is a tender rosy red, the accompanying duck confit leg exhibits enviable richness, and the potatoes drenched in duck fat are truly decadent. Other dishes like the shrimp and grits and the seafood stew again contain little details that take proven recipes to the next level. With all this attention to detail, one might expect a pretentious atmosphere. That isn't the case in the slightest. The entire team at Chicory is incredibly welcoming, friendly and approachable. They don't talk down to their clientele; rather, they provide a reasonably approachable menu and are happy to help you through any questions. Chicory has stuck an enviable balance between eclectic, approachable, and novel. Very few restaurants around the country can boast such a claim. Finally, the space is really inviting. Close to the bar, there are a ton of navy and gold tones that reminded me of the Charleston, SC cocktail bar Doar Brothers. With a few tips of the cap towards Cajun cuisine as well, Chicory brings the best parts of the South to Washington State. Simply stated, if you like in Seattle or Olympia and you haven't been here, you are missing out. And if you are visiting from out of town, this is absolutely worth your time. It's only January to be sure, but I suspect that all other restaurants will be hard pressed to remove Chicory from the mantle of best restaurant I've eaten at in calendar year 2022. read more

This is a must-eat situation when in Olympia. Right downtown with plenty of street parking the atmosphere and vibe inside are sweet and comfortable. There are 4 or 5 seats at the bar and tables spaced well. Bottom line - Chef Elise's food is as another reader said, "delicious, interesting and unpretentious." The staff is super sweet, very engaging and knowledgeable. Keep an eye on their socials and join the email list as they often do "ticketed" dinners and collaborations with other chefs or kindred food spirits - and those sell out quickly. If you're there for dinner GET THE DIRTY RICE, OMG THE DIRTY RICE. The shrimp & grits were another dish that blew me away - i dont know what magic she's putting in those grits, but I can't get enough. It was okay. I had some gumbo (and the usual suspects -- smoked chicken, andouille sausage, etc.). It didn't seem like the NOLA gumbo I've had. Maybe it's OLYWA gumbo. I took my brothers (visiting from California) to Chicory for a special meal. Most of what we ordered was really good. The menu is unique and a lot of the flavor combinations are really creative and inventive. (We all felt there was way too much sauce on the grits, which overpowered everything else on the plate, but maybe that was a personal taste kind of thing, and most people like it that way.) We had planned on picking up gelato at Sophie's scoops after dinner to bring home and enjoy later in the evening. Once we ordered our meal, I looked it up online and saw that Sophie's was closing in a just few minutes. So I ran the block to get our gelato before they closed. When I saw the thin paper bag they put it in I asked if they had a cold bag or any way to wrap it to stay cold, because we were eating at Chicory, and didn't have any other option but to ask them to keep it cold for us. The young woman behind the counter confidently said "Oh no worries, I'm sure they'll put it in the freezer for you." And I said, "Are you sure?" and she said "Oh yes, we all support each other's businesses downtown." I ran back with the gelato in time to enjoy our appetizers, which had just been served. Apparently, my brothers had already thought to ask if we could put the gelato in their freezer. They were told no. So when the waitress next came to the table, I asked if by any chance they had a plastic bag I could put it in so we could dump the ice from under our oysters into the bag to keep it cold, and she coldly said no, they didn't have a plastic bag. This was said without looking for one, without asking in back, without a smile. Just No. I asked if they had a paper bag. Looking truly put out, without a word, she simply turned and walked away. A moment later a man (who I can only assume was the manager or the owner) came over, looking very annoyed, and coldly asked what the issue was. It felt as if he thought we were causing a huge problem. I explained that I had run to get ice cream at Sophie's, and we just wanted to try to keep it cold while we ate, and that they had said that they were sure that Chicory would put it in their freezer for us. He condescendingly told us he would NEVER put outside food in their freezer. This was delivered with total attitude, as if we were complete idiots. OK, certainly the attitude was unnecessary, but there may be some health issues that I'm not aware of. So I said that was why I had asked if he had a plastic bag we could put it in and we'd put the used oyster ice in it. With a cold look, he said "No, we don't have a plastic bag", making it very clear by his tone, that we were being incredibly demanding by asking for a bag. I said "Ok, do you have a paper bag? I guess I could put the small ice cream bag inside another paper bag with the ice." And again, not trying to hide his complete frustration with us, he condescendingly told me it would have been better if I had simply waited until after dinner to get dessert. I explained that Sophie's was closing, which is why I left the table to run over. He just turned and walked away, clearly annoyed with all of us, came back with a paper bag, handed it to me without a word, as if it was really over-the-top request and walked away as I was thanking him. The rest of the meal the vibe we got was that we weren't welcome, and were super difficult customers. In fact after that, instead of our original waitress, August, a lovely man named Andrew took over waiting on us. We suspected that our waitress didn't want to deal with us anymore because, God forbid, we asked for a bag. (Andrew, was lovely, friendly, warm, and very helpful. He was the only one there who made us feel welcome) The hostile attitude towards us was such a surprise and made us feel completely unwelcome. (Meanwhile we were being super friendly, and spending a decent amount of money in their establishment.) I own a retail business myself. I simply don't understand why anyone would treat their own customers this way. It's so unnecessary. It would've been so easy to just say sure, grab a bag and hand it to us but no, they had to act as if we were being totally unreasonable, and completely inconveniencing them. Quaint setting and unassuming, this place punches above its weight. The staff was friendly and the food was excellent. Southern flavor with a northwest note, the food choices were a bit limited but there wasn't anything I didn't want to try. I can't wait to get back and work my way through the menu. read more
