Decided to try this restaurant as I live a few blocks away. Peruvian is my favorite food so anytime I see a small mom and pop spot I like to try it out. Well this place did not disappoint. No the decor and location was not very trendy or fancy but the service and food was exquisite. I had the curry chaufa which was delicious. My girlfriend had the traditional lomo salteado, which I can say was one of the best I've ever had. The meat was cooked perfect and the flavor was beyond expectations. Not to mention both portions were very large, none of us finished our meal. As with small restaurants where the owners work it, the service was outstanding. To begin, I want to mention that I ordered food from this restaurant from a major delivery site who was awesome and refunded me the price of my order and I thank them but have opted not to name the site because it is not affiliated with Yelp. That being said, this restaurant is so terrible and their behavior so sickening that I am leaving this review on every site that I can think of because I am upset enough that it is worth the effort to let the whole world know. The Backstory: I ordered pollo al ajo (garlic chicken for those among us who do not have Spanish language competency). My food was delivered ahead of schedule but the food I received was not what I ordered. No big deal, mistakes happen, so I ran outside to catch the delivery person. The delivery person called the restaurant and explained the problem to the manager who asked to speak to me. On the phone, the manager told me that the order that I received the correct order before I could explain that what I received was chicken sauteed with broccoli, not garlic chicken. He refused to even listen, just insisted that he was right. The Evidence: The menu does not contain any description for Pollo al ajo. However, there is another menu item named "Pollo en Trozo Saltado con Brocoli" the description for which reads "Chicken chunk sauteed with broccoli." The food that I received looks just like chinese chicken with broccoli and is clearly not garlic chicken, which a quick google image search of " Peruvian pollo al ajo" will clearly reveal. Moreover, the sauce has no garlic smell or flavor. Finally, there is the fact that the manager did not ask nor allow me to describe the food item that I actually received prior to insisting that it was what I ordered. His adamant and preemptive denial leads me to believe either that he purposefully sent an incorrect order (instead of contacting the delivery site to inform them that he was unable to fill my order and risking the loss of a sale) or that he has received similar complaints in the past and (having failed to take action to prevent such miscommunications in the future) anticipated my reaction. The Ludicrously Poor Customer Service: Worse than the Manager's failure to address the inadequacy of the menu item's description (at best) or (at worst) bold faced lie, was his rude refusal to do anything to make it right. Let's just assume for argument's sake that the garlic chicken is essentially the same thing as the chicken with broccoli, he still could (and should in the name of customer service) have done something to address my dissatisfaction. Among the available options: (1) offering to substitute the dish for another that matched my expectations; (2) offering a credit towards my next order; (3) offering a refund; and (4) apologizing for my understandable confusion and offering to rectify the problem by amending his menu on the website to include a description of the dish (may I suggest "Chicken chunks sauteed with broccoli"?) When I contacted the delivery website they also contacted the restaurant only to encounter the same stubborn righteousness and ill advised customer service. The delivery site was kind enough to refund my money but it seems unfair to allow the restaurant to shift the loss of its inadequacy onto either of us (hence the review). Why Chifa Don Jose Deserves a One Star Review, Notwithstanding Everything Else Recounted Here: It is worth mentioning, in parting, that this restaurant still warrants a one star review, even if the order had been correct and the manager had not been ludicrously rude. The cost of both Pollo al ajo and of Pollo en Trozo Saltado con Brocoli is $11.99 on the delivery site and between $10 and $11 here. With tax, delivery fee, and a standard 20% tip, the price comes out to about $20. Even if you order take out and don't tip, paying only the $10-12 + tax, you are getting ripped off. The dish amounts to a standard sized cereal bowl's worth of food, it does not come with rice or any side dishes, I didn't even receive a plastic fork or napkin. I can get good tasting chicken and broccoli with fried rice, egg drop soup, an egg roll, condiments, and a drink from any number of Chinese restaurants in the immediate area for about $8.00. Moreover, while currently maintaining a passing health inspection score, according to a prior review posted here on Yelp by another user (see a few below this review), some negative health code related issues about this restaurant have been alleged. It's worth noting, generally, that the health inspection information Yelp posts only reflects routine inspections and is silent as to follow-up inspections required based on findings. Past performance is not necessarily an indicator of current or future performance but it might be worth a quick online review to satisfy yourself. In closing, I wish I could give negative stars. Save your money for quality food from one of the many competing small business that cares about its customers. read more

This is my number one Chinese Peruvian restaurant to go to. I've been coming here since I was a little kid! The food is always delicious, it really taste like authentic Peruvian Chinese cuisine. This is definitely a small hole-in the wall kind of place, NOT a place for taking a date or out of town visitors...NOOOO...because between the decor, and the boxes pilling up in the corner, the lack of organization, its not a cute place at all. I've been meaning to get back on board with actually writing reviews instead of just checking-in to different spots, and it saddens me that this restaurant must be my come-back review. Unfortunately, I was compelled to write the following: As many of you know, I am a fan and avid frequenter of Peruvian restaurants. Having recently moved out of the Gables, I was eager to find a new place nearby to satisfy my craving for great Peruvian food. I found my fellow yelpers had raved about the chaufa and boasted the best "lomo saltado" in town, so you know this had to be my next stop! The "ceviche de pescado" was excellent! The chicken chaufa was nice, although I've had much better at Aromas de Peru. They do have rocotto sauce on hand, but they charge you $1.50 for a thimble-full! I must say, fellow yelpers, I agree, best lomo saltado I've tried. At this point in the meal, I was thinking..."atmosphere could use a little sprucing up, but I can live with it. The ceviche was good enough to come back, considering it's fairly close to home, all in all, I wasn't totally wow'ed, but I could have come back." Then we got the bill. Here is where things went downhill for me. Not only did they automatically add 15% tip to my bill without mentioning it (which not only lost them points, but also $$$ because I usually tip between 18-20%), but then when I took out my check card, I was told by the owner to head back to the register with her and enter my pin number! Even the girl at the cash register was a little thrown! I'm sorry, but I left with a really sour taste in my mouth, and it wasn't the lime juice from the ceviche! This place is way too good! growing up, i hated peruvian food, my parents loved it and would pretty much force it down my throat. Chifa Jose Antonio quickly changed my mind and now im i love. Their "lomo saltado" is so dleicious, steak on top of french fries on top of fried rice....i couldnt beleive what i was eating. the service was incredible, the owners great you, sit you, talk with you, and bring out the food to you. after eating there i went to many other Peruvian restaurants and its clear that Peruvian food is the best in Latin Cuisine. read more

I see no reason to be sad that the Chifa restaurant on 125 Ave. and Kendall Dr. closed down, because I think that this restaurant is much better. The Chifa on Kendall Dr. was always packed, but this one is always pretty empty when we go there. I don't know why, because the food is very good. The Lomo Saltado is the best out there that I've tried. My wife loves the dishes with fish chunks, they have just the right amount of saltiness. You can't go wrong with any of the fried seafood dishes either, they are excellent. It's the small hole-in-the-wall locations that truly turn out to be the most authentic. Chifa Don Jose is right across from FIU's main campus so it's a great spot we've learned to love when taking a break from class or studying. Prices are good for all the food they serve and everything is freshly made. Definitely try the chicha morada! read more

I would never come back to this place. The dishes' presentation is quite bad, and the service and attention is even worse. We ordered a causa and it had a hair in it. Great divey chifa- Peruvian cuisine. And really authentic! I come here often and have never been disappointed in he quality of the food. Definitely consistently good! Sometimes they are out of items, but there are over 100 dishes on the menu, so just try something new! You won't be disappointed. Heads up they don't speak English, but just point to what you want! The food is not that great and the place does not look charming. I went there twice to try the chinese-peruvian food but i am not amused. After looking for many places, i found a better Chifa called Chifa Du Kang. The food was way better and the place and attention was more South-American. read more

Was there for lunch with my family. The place was empty and we thought it was strange, but decided to give it a try anyway. We should have left. We had the special wonton soup and the fried rice. The soup was tasteless. The rice was cold. What really ruined the experience was the service. When we first got there the waiter was pushy and insisted that we get additional plates. We disagreed. After getting our food to us the waiter never returned. I had to call him over every time for drink refills and for our check. He wouldn't even look up from his laptop to see if we needed anything. To top things off he included a 20% tip on the check. I refused to pay 20% for such horrible service and he chased after us. He stood in front of the door and wouldn't let my mother through until we gave him the $2 we had subtracted from the tip. Horrible! read more
