Shave Ice Fact: Hawaiian shave ice is a historic, finely shaved ice dessert introduced by Japanese immigrants during Hawaii's plantation era in the early 1900s. Unlike crunchy snow cones, it uses block ice for a powdery, snow-like texture that absorbs syrup. Randy S. told me to #KeepItKaimuki so that's what I'm going to do. You just don't question my Cycle Buddy about things, okay? And when Nadine told me, "It's 'shave ice' with no 'D,' unless you want to be caught being a tourist," it will forever be ingrained in my memory. It's kind of like how Rod U. mentioned once not to eat oysters on months that do not contain the letter "R" and that's how I live my life now. Shave ice! Shave ice! Shave ice! I got the guava, mandarin orange, and lychee but my eyes were glued to Cycle Buddy Randy S's coffee and matcha duo. It was so good! I also tried twinsie Nadine's hojicha, haupia, and something else. All three shave ice creations were good but that matcha and coffee duo is the flavor combo I crave. Great place and even better service. Chillest is the chillest place to cool off!
It's 96°F today so naturally I'm thinking about shave ice. After a delicious lunch of cake noodles, we stopped by for shave ice. It was a sweet treat, a tasty dessert, after a carb heavy meal. I shared a creation with a trio of bright fruit flavors and it hit the spot. It's a cozy place so eat your icy treat and get out and enjoy Oahu. Keep it Kaimuki.

Great place to cool down with a mountain of shave ice. I had three flavors (guava, Lilikoi and Haupia) that represent the islands well. Generous portion of ice and syrup mixed well with the vanilla ice scream. All three flavors were not overly sweet. The owner and daughter team were very friendly. The shop is clean and simple. Parking is nightmare so I had to park in the street about a mile away. Limited Outdoor seating in the back9@&&
Always on the search for a good shave ice place, I came across Chillest Shave Ice on Waialae Ave. It's a small hole-in-the-wall near The Curb. I noticed there was a parking lot in back of their business, but I'm not sure if that was for employees or the public. I ended up parking at a metered spot on the street, which is often hard to find. Upon entrance, I was greeted by the friendliest people. Not sure if the lady & man were the owners or employees, but they were very sweet. It's a small interior with a community table and a counter bar that looks out to the street. Cash only! They have 1 size and you can choose up to 3 flavors. They have 3 flavor categories: $6 classic, $7 house and $8 house. If you select 1 flavor from each category, you'll be charged the highest flavor. They also offer $1 toppings: ice cream, mochi & azuki beans, as well as free snow cap. I selected the banana cream, vanilla cream & orange cream under the $6 flavors. When it arrived to my table, I was shocked to see how big it was! It's definitely shareable. The ice was shaved very fine and the flavors were delicious. I can only imagine what the upgraded flavors taste like! I will definitely return to try some of their other flavors and toppings. I love supporting small businesses like this.
Honestly, I was a bit skeptical about dropping $7-$8 on a shave ice, but the flavor lineup pulled me in. It's a solid mix of local staples and Japanese-inspired hits--think Li Hing and POG sitting right next to Kinako Latte and Japan Grape. I stuck to my guns with Strawberry and Li Hing, while the wife went adventurous: Ramune, Kinako Latte, and some kind of brown tea (the name escapes me, but the vibes were there). The Verdict When the orders came out, we were floored by the size--these things are massive. But it wasn't just volume; it was actually refreshing and packed with flavor. The real game-changer? The syrup distribution. * Consistency: The syrups flow heavy all the way to the bottom. * Quality: Unlike some other spots (looking at you, Wailoa...), you aren't left with a cup of plain ice at the end. * Sweetness: Perfectly balanced--not that syrupy, tooth-aching sugar trap you find elsewhere. Run, don't walk to Chillest! What a great concept of serving one size only. Let's you focus on the 3 flavors you can choose with your order. To make it easier, pick Japanese grape as one of your choices. Lilikoi and mandarin orange was the other two. Each flavor stands on its own thus the dessert is not solely a sugar bomb. Sit indoors and enjoy because once you step outside, the fine ice melts before your eyes.
All the hype is no joke! Aaron Wong is creating flavors unique to the decades long shave ice industry. A steady stream of locals know this place and thanks to my Yelp Squad, I'm now a groupie too. Two visits in my last trip to Honolulu 'cuz there are so many flavors I wanted to try. Owner keeps the shop simple. They are not selling you all kinds of stuff in the shop. They let their shave ice stand out and do all the talking for them. Generous portions of Haupia, Melona, Lychee flavors poured onto a mountain of soft snow. Oh yeah...and I don't forget the ice cream...ever! Do NOT pass on this place. I know Waia'lae Ave is crazy with limited parking, but they have a lot in the back too and the side street. You won't regret it. TIP: Cash only at this time.
A towering bowl of heavenly shave ice! I've been here twice and I've loved both times. The shave ice is light and fluffy and the syrups are so flavorful and nuanced. Favorites are: Ramune Grape Strawberry milk Hojicha Always add a drizzle of condensed milk! The wait time for Shave Ice can arrange anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes depending on how busy they are, but it's very worth the wait. The portions are towering and there is a decent amount of seating. Be polite! Wait in line, wait for your order, eat and go. Don't linger around for too long knowing that there are others waiting for a seat to open up. Parking is located on the street or inside of the little lot behind the shave ice store. They take card and Apple Pay! So what are you waiting for? Go and get a bowl of Chillest Shave Ice!
I heard the mochi here are the best, so when they told me they were sold out for the day, I promised myself I'd come back the next day, and I did! Just a heads up: Chillest Shave Ice is cash only. There's parking in the back, and you can scan a QR code for one hour of free parking. Unfortunately, I arrived right after a group of 10 had just placed their order, so there was a bit of a wait, but it was absolutely worth it. I ordered the strawberry milk and haupia shave ice, topped with mochi and snow cap, and it was AMAZING. The ice is shaved so finely that it just melts in your mouth. I honestly didn't think I could finish it all, but somehow I devoured the entire thing, yes, all eight mochis! The service was warm and full of aloha spirit. There are 3 small tables inside and couple tables outside in the parking lot. Chillest is definitely going on my rotation list for future Oahu trips.
This is my current #1 for shave ice, displacing Waiola. Ordering and menu are straightforward. There's 1 size. You can pick up to 3 flavors which fall under the $6, $7, or $8. So if you're pake like me, you optimize all flavors from the $8 menu. Also, snow cap (condensed milk) is included. How could anyone say, "No?" The ice is super fluffy and light. Ambiance The ambiance is simple but it has a chill vibe. (Ahah what a kneeslapper) Service For starters, the place is cash only, which isn't a problem but bring cash if you're going. The staff were really nice. The line however was long. Food The shave ice was refreshing ,soft, and delicious! I got the lychee and ramune shave ice. Did I wait 40 min for my shave ice? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. This place is perfect if you want to share shave ice bc the portion is HUGE! Similar to Shimazu's. Love all the locally made flavors that have the perfect amount of sweetness. It's so fresh and hits the spot. And condensed milk is free!!! Probably around 4 pm on a weekend is the busiest time to come so be prepared for a wait and a crowded parking lot. Cash only! Definitely worth a try and will be coming back for more. read more
After a hot day at the beach I decided to check this place out since I've seen it on insta a few times. It was pretty easy to find! There's a small parking lot in the back behind Finance Factors and we entered through a bright green door. FYI THEY ARE CASH ONLY! They have a couple tables and about four high chairs and a bench out front. They have one size only and depending on the flavor you want is how much you will pay. You can choose up to three flavors and snow cap here, is free!!! My boyfriend and I ordered the Matcha, Hojicha, Haupia with ice cream and snow cap. The flavors were so good and the ice was so soft! The Hojicha is such a unique option so for a hojicha lover I am so stoked to have finally tried this place and I can't wait to be back for my next shave ice craving! read more

Fully the best shave ice I've ever had. You can get the bottled syrups anywhere but these guys commit to some amazing house made flavors. I had the melona and the strawberry milk (with real strawberries in it) and my boyfriend had the ramune and Japanese grape. The portions are HUGE and the price is RIGHT. So happy they finally have a brick and mortar location so I can visit at decent hours! Heard so much about this business that would do pop ups at Fishcake but those blasted hours were so inconvenient for my schedule, always. Finally had a chance to go recently (was able to bring my well behaved dog inside) and had our group get various flavors so we could sample better. Opt for the House flavors ($7 to $8) because Classic flavors are your run of the mill, wholesale artificial shaved ice syrups. Most of the House flavors hit it out of the park! Really can't go wrong- except for the Papaya. DO NOT get the Papaya. I took one for the team. Matcha and Hojicha are SOOOOO well done. As are the Strawberry Milk, Haupia, Lilikoi. Crowd favorites also included the Mandarin Orange, Mango, Guava and the Not Hot Chocolate (seems like a light chocolate milk flavor). Could do without the ice cream but they were out of mochi!! Must be corrected asap. Very very fine shaved ice that soaks up all the syrups. Melts in your mouth and not crunchy at all. It does also mean that the ice melts rather quickly at the bottom so eat fast! Downside: CASH ONLY. UPSIDE: No tipping policy. Sidenote: parking is the same lot as the Curb Kaimuki. There is a back door entrance directly from the parking lot to the store. From the streetside, there is no sign but it is next to the Curb and has the old Color Lounge sign. read more

I've gone twice within two weeks because it's so good! The shave ice is huge, enough to share with another person but I'm not going to lie I ate a whole one myself haha. I love their strawberry milk flavor as well as matcha and calpico. You can choose up to three flavors and they have free snow cap! It's small inside so expect to wait for them to make you shave ice and for a seat. They have a small parking lot in the back or street parking. Also they are cash only! read more

So good!! The flavors are all made in house and we were told that the flavors $7 and up are all made from fresh fruit. The $6 flavors are made from concentrate. They will charge you based on the most expensive flavor you get and you can pick up to 3 flavors. They are cash only! The service was great and parking was super easy. They are currently open 11am-6pm most days except for Tuesday they are open 11am-9pm which is nice for the after dinner crowd. I will be back and bring my friends here! The best shaved ice cream I had in Hawaii! Service was great too. I had strawberry milk and haupia (coconut milk) with mochi. Really great flavor that was not too sweet and the ice was so softly shaved it melts in your mouth. Not chunky icy at all. read more
Best shave ice on the island, hands down. Even my wife who doesn't care for shave ice, is a huge fan. Love the strawberry milk, matcha, and hojicha combo with mochi. Also gotta get the snow cap, which is free. Soft and fluffy ice, generous portion, and you can tell that they make each shave ice with care. Super friendly owners too. If there isn't any parking available in the small lot, it can be a little tricky. You either have to circle around in case someone leaves or try to find nearby street parking. If you do find parking in the lot, just scan the code and you'll get 1 hour free parking. read more
I'm so happy Chillest opened a store front, I've been wanting to try them but could never quite make it to their popups. The staff is so friendly and helpful! All of the flavors are homemade, so everything is delicious. None of them are too heavy or too sugary and taste exactly like the fruit they're made from. The strawberry milk is what they're known for, but everyone should be trying the papaya - it is so good! I will definitely be coming back here! read more

Missed trying this spot when they used to be a pop up, so I was super excited to try their new brick and mortar in Kaimuki! Chillest is in the same building as The Curb. They offer validated parking in the back; back entrance next to The Curb's back door. LOVED the flavors! I'm partial to my own yummy order of matcha, hojicha, and strawberry milk with ice cream and mochi balls (tea flavor fans will rejoice!) My friends and I agreed the flavor profiles are right on point and the syrup is equally spread throughout the entire shave ice (not like some other places where it's just the top layer that gets flavored and the inside all icy). They have classic and speciality flavors on separate lists. Seems like they maybe do small batches as they marked several flavors as "sold out" within the half hour or so we were there Sunday afternoon. Pro tip: these are HUGE. We didn't realize how big and ordered individual ones whoops lol. Perfect size for sharing between 2 people. Definitely will be back to try other flavors!! Limited seating indoors. Takes a visit from my California cousin to venture into the shave ice zone. One of her visiting goals is always to have a shave ice a day while in Hawaii. So I consider her my "expert" on the subject. Today her selection brought us to "Chillest" Had to see it for myself how this rather unknown spot made it to cousin's short list. First notice are how large the servings are. Definitely easily shared. ...the shave ice bowls at Chillest are HUUUGE! I could eat less than half by myself. Second observation was the unique flavors listed. Loved seeing the "local" POG (passion orange guava). Got really excited when I saw matcha and hojicha and kinako as options. Here at Chillest you can select three flavors with your treat. You can also add on a snow cap at no extra charge. I quickly went from intended bystander to eager participant. Got temporarily blinded by the yummieness of choices by the person in front of me and spontaneously changed up to: matcha, hojicha, and strawberry milk. Ohhh myyy yumm. Found my new happy place with first bite. Shave ice was fine and light like cotton. Flavors were delicious and refreshing withOUT being overly sweet. If you have a sweet tooth you would probably be better to stick to their fruity flavors. Chillest currently operating as a popup on Saturday's only in the Fish Cake on Kamani Street AND on Sunday as a popup on Waialae and 9th Avenue in Kaimuki. Nice size and pretty fluffy ice. I ordered the matcha and strawberry milk. I liked the matcha better. I'm not used to a milky flavor on shave ice. The mochi was flat, firm, and chewy. Both of the flavors were 'house flavors', and left me with no desire to slurp up the leftover syrup. It's a decent shave ice, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this. read more

Small shop with no signage but around a few Kaimuki landmarks to help locate it. It's in the same building as the Curb and the Breadshop. Front entrance faces the Kaimuki Veterinary Urgent Care. The back door is the little green door tucked in to the left of the Curb's back door. Small parking lot in the back, too. Being small, it's amazing how many flavors are offered. The day we went, there were about 25 flavors...some quite unique like kinako latte, not hot chocolate,chojicha, calpico. Flavors are at three price points, but you pay for only the most expensive of the 3 syrups you choose. Additions to the shave ice are limited to ice cream, but you can tell them how many scoops you would like ($1 per each addition). Bonus is the ice cap addition is free! One order, with up to 3 flavors, is huge and easily shareable between two people. The ice is light and fluffy, with the syrups having an authentically natural flavors As people learn about this place, they will have to step it up. When crowded, the wait can be awhile. They only have one machine to shave the ice, and with them giving such a huge serving, it takes some time to get that amount of ice. Additionally, with it being a small space, there's only 12 seats and gets even more crowded with people in line or waiting for their order. But, the staff is friendly, working hard, and apologetic for any wait. For the full offering of flavors, highly suggest going earlier in the day. Some of their flavors are limited. While we were there, they ran out of melona, and they seemed to be rationing the kinako latte as that was the final bottle as they were waiting for the next kinako shipment. Our matcha and chocolate syrups were well poured to get throughout the shave ice mound. However, the kinko was poured very lightly. Only the surface had flavor, but under it was plain ice. Despite this, I'm definitely returning to try other flavors, but hopefully at a time that's not so busy. Something to note: CASH ONLY. read more

I went to Chillest Shave Ice without any real expectations and ended up being completely impressed. Finding this place is half the adventure. We walked right past it despite having the address because the entrance is so subtle. We had to backtrack after crossing the street before we spotted the door! Once inside, the cozy setup with tables and window seating immediately won me over. The staff was welcoming and walked us through their menu, which features mostly house-made syrups organized by price tiers. Basic flavors cost less, while the specialty options bump up the price. My friend brought his two kids along for this adventure and they had syrups that totally fit their young picky palates. When our orders arrived, we were all impressed by the generous portions (for real, they were amazing!). The ice towers impressively high thanks to its incredibly light texture. I was fascinated by how airy it felt. The syrup combinations work beautifully together. Unfortunately they'd run out of the Japanese Grape I wanted, but my backup choice turned out delicious. The space has a cozy, intimate feel, though it might get tight during busy periods. Some additional seating could be a nice addition for peak times, but the indoor setup works well for the current operation. The 6 PM closing time works for afternoon and post-work treats, though staying open a bit later might capture the after-dinner dessert crowd. I'm already planning my return visit to explore those premium flavors I didn't try. The whole experience was refreshing and fun, and the team here clearly cares about what they're doing. Growing up in Hawaii, I was used to Malolo strawberry syrup on rough shave ice and vanilla ice cream and was perfectly content. Living in Southern California expanded my horizons with Korean style shave ice which is good, but there's always a lot going on with that kind of shave ice. However, Chillest is pure shave ice heaven! The syrups are flavorful and not overly sweet. It was hard to choose only three flavors but decided on haupia, hojicha, and kinako latte. What an incredible blend of flavors!!! I had it with vanilla ice cream and then two days later, went back had the same three flavors with mochi. The mochi was real Japanese mochi that wasn't sweetened so it offset the syrups. The owners were so friendly and helpful and the shop is very clean and bright. Make sure you have cash since they're cash only. The battle for parking in Kaimuki is worth it!!! read more

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Top down the best shaved ice on the island! And yes, I'm willing to fight on that. The e softest, fluffiest ice, with the most delicious homemade flavors, this place is tiny but mighty. First off, it's cash only so please come prepared. It does get super busy, but I promise, it's worth the wait. There's seating inside the restaurant and outside in the back. If there are a lot of people, your order can take a while but trust that it won't disappoint. Our all-time favorite is the Strawberry Milk, and we've been fans since their Ailana days. It goes really well with the haupia and guava, or the not so hot chocolate. One absolute winner today was their lychee flavor. It was phenomenal! Also loved the tart lychee and the subtle mandarin orange. Definitely get them with the free snow cap! Their homemade mochi is also really good! We find ourselves back here a lot. Most importantly, they are some of the nicest, most humble people around. Definitely dishing out a lot of love and aloha in every bowl. Absolutely a must on Oahu! read more

This is the BEST shave ice I've ever had! I came here with 4 friends and we expected to share 1 but we sat here and kept ordering more because it was SOOOO yummy! The prices range from $6-$8 and they are huge. The ice is so fluffy and melts in your mouth. We tried guava, strawberry milk, matcha, kinako latte, haupia, POG, Japanese grape, vanilla cream and mandarin orange. All the flavors were so good that it's hard to pick a favorite but I would have to choose kinako latte, strawberry milk and matcha as my tops and they are all made every morning in house! The ambiance is very chill with lots of seating. The staff is so kind and friendly! One note, they are cash only so come prepared. I'm always wanting to try something new so when I was recommended Chillest Shave Ice, I knew I had to try it. This shave ice reminds me of Japanese style Kakigori. We're not locals but we do know a thing or two about shaved ice. After trying plenty of spots in Honolulu, this place was worth every penny. All the flavors were made in house and u can get all of this for $6-8 depending on the flavors you get. For sure coming back here on my next Hawai'i trip. read more

My husband and I have been repeat customers here. It's always a nice way to end our day. Parking behind is free for the first hour, just scan the QR code on the door before entering. Also, cash only! :) The workers are so friendly and nice. There's only one person who makes the ice part, but it's sooo worth the wait! The shaved ice is just so pillowy soft. I also like that inside is a nice temperature so while you're eating you're not freezing. The menu of flavors is amazing! They have your OG favorites if you're not feeling too adventurous. I think we tried almost all of them, but our favorite is the strawberry milk. PLUS snow cap is FREE?! What?! That's a must add on! read more

I don't usually love shaved ice, but the shaved ice here was amazing! The portion is pretty big, so I would definitely say share unless you're parched! The icecream is only $1 extra and it is a GOOD vanilla icecream. The store is cash only though! Seating is limited but the people are really nice! There is also parking in the back. We got the 3 house flavors (mango, lilikoi, lychee). I liked lilikoi the most. My friends got strawberry milk, lychee, Japanese grape. I definitely thought the strawberry milk was and lilikoi were the best flavors out of our choices! read more

Chillest is my FAVORITE shave ice place on the island, literally THE BEST, THE GOAT. They are owned by a local couple that are really the sweetest people you will ever meet. I just wish they were open more than two days a week. They currently pop-up at fishcake on Saturdays from 1030AM to 4PM and at island boy on Sundays from 11AM to 4PM. My current favorite combo is Hojicha (from Daily Whisk Matcha) and their amazing Haupia (and I don't even like coconut that much). This pairing is so nice, with the creaminess of the haupia offset by the roasted flavor of the Hojicha. Nothing I've had from them is too sweet, and nothing tastes like those artificial flavors you'd find at some touristy spots. You can tell that they take pride in what they do and that they really know what they are doing. Some of my friends' favorite flavors include strawberry milk, matcha, and not-so-hot chocolate! The ice is so soft and although they give you a GIANT heap of shave ice, you can't stop eating it until it's GONE. Their prices are between $5 and $7, which is a STEAL for this quality of shave ice and syrups. And did I mention that these two are some of the nicest human beings you will ever meet?
