We live in Durango and have many choices for a nice dinner. Chimayo is the restaurant we go to more than any other. The atmosphere is sophisticated and inviting. The food is delicious. We were in one night when A group of Italian tourists came in for dinner. When we spoke to them they said the pizza was better at Chimayo then in Italy. We all had a good laugh about that and they told us that this was the second night they were in because the pizza was so good. One of my favorites is the mac & cheese. I used to think that mac & cheese belong on a kids menu. Not anymore! The mac & cheese is so good that sometimes we take an order home for lunch the next day. We had lunch there today and I had the chicken flatbread sandwich and my husband had the fat juicy hamburger. We were both very happy with our selections. What a great restaurant. Went to Trip Advisor's #1 Durango restaurant and it had an hour wait. Walked around and found Chimayo. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. Two of us shared 3 appetizers (Acorn squash Fondue, cornbread, roasted brussels sprouts), along with a beer and were full. Came back the next night and tried four different items. ALL were great. The location and decor are fantastic. One of the best in Durango. The staff is above average for this town. The food is below average for the price. This was my third time here and I have to say my excitement over a new high end restaurant in town combined with the great modern decor plus no wait to get seated has finally worn off. Durango was packed on July 6th and honesty we tried three other top rated restaurants before calling Chimayo. Waits were all 30 minutes to an hour elsewhere and we couldn't afford the time since we had 2 kiddos in tow who had an early train ride the next day. We had 6 with us were looking for the closest place that could seat us...in comes Chimayo. Called them, they said they could get a table together for us while we walked over there and we sat down immediately upon arrival. Our kids loved the open kitchen large wood ovens. It was a good distraction to have them watch how our order was made. We had pizza, salad, fish tacos, steak tacos and southwest cob salad with steak. Stone IPA, Turbo Dog English Brown Ale and Peach Porch drink too. All were fantastic, especially the steak, which was cooked on wood inside one of the two open flame ovens. Had dessert too. Chocolate molten cake, creme brûlée, and carrot cake. All very good. Order a few desserts for your table as they are good sized, but not enormous portions like some places. Only cons were the lack of a changing table in their bathrooms. I also thought prices were a little on the $$$ side instead of the $$ side. Pricier than we were looking for, but well worth it to be seated immediately and have excellent food/service. This place is a well-oiled operation. Don't pass it up! read more

Every single person in our family ate their entire meal, there were many options and everything had such wonderful flavor. The wines were also very unique and well selected. By far the best restaurant in Durango!! I have tried most of the dishes and every one was prepared to perfection. The Cedar Plank Salmon is my favorite and was AMAZING!!! The way the cedar flavor infused into the salmon is incredible. Creme brûlée, PERFECTION!! Strawberry rhubarb, TO-DIE-FOR!! Staff is friendly and amazing too!! The inside design of the restaurant is extremely welcoming and very well thought out. there is a bar right in front of the prep area you can sit at and watch them prepare. Also, the owners wife does Blown glass and/or metal decorations that are for sale. One of the larger and more welcoming bar areas as well. I can't find anything bad to say about the restaurant. We tried to get up and walk away because it took 15 minutes to get our drinks, the waiter met us with our drinks in his hand and a sad look in his eyes, as we were headed towards the door. Out of pity we went back to our table, I wish we kept on walking... food was over priced, I had a cauliflower undercooked steak that was 23 dollars .. it was undercooked and basically a waste of time and money. Chimayo isn't even worth the length of this review. It's an overpriced tourist custy trap. Do yourself a favor and keep walking. read more

We went on New Year's Day. One friend in our party asked for a bottle of wine not realizing it was a white wine he ordered. When the waiter brought the bottle, our friend asked for a different red wine (we could tell our waiter was annoyed) and when our friend fumbled through the menu to find a red wine he wanted, he accidentally knocked a glass over and broke it. The member of my party proceeded to say he was sorry for the accident. The waiter didn't acknowledge his apology. My brother and I subsequently heard "fuck this" from the waiter. We were shocked. We told our friend what was said and when the waiter came back our friend asked if he was upset and the waiter said "you were mocking me by saying sorry. I've dealt with so many dunks today..." My friend had one drink all day. The waiter immediately started getting mad at us for an accident and we proceeded to get our check, pay the bill (even though we got food and didn't eat it) , and leave. We asked if we could not pay for the food we previously ordered but didn't eat because of the rude service. They denied. Unfortunately the restaurant will support their staff and we will be considered "the unreasonable drunks". I wish they wouldn't think that but they will. The rudeness expressed to us by their waiter was unforgivable as the incident was what it was, an unfortunate accident. I hope no one else has to go through this. read more

One of the better meals I've had in Durango. The cedar plank salmon was amazing, and the bartender (Chuck) made a fantastic margarita. The servers all use an iPod touch to take your order which is great and will probably save time once everyone gets used to the software, but in our case it may have actually slowed down the process. They had only been open for a few weeks when I was there, so I'm assuming everyone is used to it by now and things have started to speed up. Overall a great experience. read more

Went here on a recommendation. We started with their special lemonade. Full of blueberries, lavender and other perfectly matched ingredients. My only complaint was that it cost $7. We had a salad and a pizza. Both were amazingly excellent. Again perfectly matched ingredients. But again, very pricey. The food is amazing with excellent service but I would say a questionable value at the prices they were charging. If I ever get back to Durango, I'll definitely be back for more fiscal abuse. :) Highly recommended to all. read more

We had the best night, of a really great extended stay in Durango, at Chimayo. I had been hesitant to go because I thought it was just pizza, but the spousal unit talked me to into it & I'm glad he did. First - it's not just pizza, but a lot of fantastic southwestern dishes made with local produce. And really good pizza. We sat at the fire bar, and I highly recommend that. All the cooks on the other side were very friendly & even offered tastes of things like the fresh Palisade peaches (yum!) with a bit of prosciutto (yumyum!). So, we had to start with a split of the peach salad and for an appetizer, the pear/prosciutto pizza (really, more like a flatbread). The waiter warned us that would probably be a meal, but we squeezed in an order of fish tacos, each having one. Wow - wish we had another night in Durango so we could try more of the menu. I had multiple glasses of a French white wine that I've never had before, but now is a favorite. The husband enjoyed a draft beer that really hit the spot with the food. High recommend. read more

We stopped by for dinner after a long day at purgatory on our way back to the rental house. We ordered an appetizer, never received it. Our waitress did not bring our food out, other employees did. She never checked back at our table. We had to flag her down to get the check. We saw her checking in our other tables so clearly it was an issues with us. My husband and I both waited tables in college, we understand you can have an off day. We are pretty forgiving of service staff. However, this felt like ignored and annoyed. The food was very good. Our last evening in Durango we decided to stroll Main Ave and find a restaurant we hadn't tried yet. We chose Chimayo because we were both in the mood for a salad (having had the Serious Texas Barbecue for lunch!). We had to wait ten minutes at the bar for a table at 7:00 which is pretty prime dining time in town. The bartender was nice, not overly chummy and very busy. We had our craft beers within minutes. Our table was corner front at the open window. Nice. My signature Southwest Chopped Kale Salad with chicken was a little pricey at $17 but it was one of the best salads I've ever had. I gave portions to my dinner partner along with half the chicken breast. My partner tried the seasonal special--a local peach salad with candied pecans, butter lettuce and Brie wedges--for $12.50. Also very good. Our waiter, Anna, was attentive and friendly, ready to make suggestions. We enjoyed the place, liked the decor (even the "garage door") and will definitely be back. read more

Really impressed! Was visiting from Southern California and went here for dinner. Started with the Chimayo House Salad which turned out to be a hidden gem. From afar it looks like a regular Caesar salad, but the jicama cut up into tiny cubes adds a bit of freshness sweetness without being over powering, and it contrasts with a little bit of spicy ness from the dressing. Lastly, pumpkin seeds add a little bit of nuttiness and additional texture. The folks here do a great job mixing flavors and paying attention to texture. Pistachio sausage pizza was more traditional tasing than it sounded. The pistachio and cauliflower flavors mostly overpowered by the hot peppers and sausage, but certainly added some welcome texture. Also tried the seasonal acorn squash fondue, served in a squash cut in half. It was a lighter, sweeter way to enjoy queso dip, and a more savory way to enjoy squash. Really great! Staff was friendly. That's 9 bucks a taco, and they were way disappointing. My husband got steak tacos, which consisted of a hunk of meat inside of a tortilla. Imagine gnawing on a taco.
