It was very tasty and a generous portion except only 3 shrimp total in entire dish for $17. I also got an egg roll. It was more like a spring roll than the bubbly egg rolls but fine. Probably wouldn't order again. Crispy, a bit oily. Vegetables only including some mushroom. $2.25 The place was nice. Clean, quiet, dimly lit. I liked the food enough to go back. Grabbed lunch here with a friend on a weekday. Service was quick and friendly. This is a hole in the wall spot offering standard Americanized Chinese food. They have a good weekday lunch special that comes with an entree, soup and egg roll for a reasonable price of $17-$18. I went with the lunch special - ordered the egg drop soup and kung pao chicken. The soup was average and lukewarm, nothing special. Would've preferred if it was served hot. The chicken entree was okay - the ingredients didn't taste as fresh as I'd like but the flavors were fine. We came here to take advantage of a coupon in the mailer. The coupon wasn't limited to dinner, so we went during lunch, and they said they would accept it. We were given cups of water to start and some time to review the menu. Although we had been here before and knew what to expect, we decided to try dishes we'd never had before. This time, we ordered Orange Beef, Crispy Duck with Vegetables, and Cumin Lamb. We waited about 10-15 minutes before all the food, including a big bowl of rice, came out at once. Everything was perfect. The Orange Beef was our favorite. It tastes similar to orange chicken at Panda Express, but everything is made fresh, including orange peels for the orange flavor. The Crispy Duck with Vegetables was also so tasty! We loved how we could taste the distinct flavor of duck in a crispy duck skin, perfectly paired with vegetables to cut back on the gamey taste. Last but not least, the Cumin Lamb was on point. As big fans of lamb, we were not disappointed. The dish included ample grilled onions for a vegetable component. All tables are pre-set with a fork and a spoon, but the waitress happily handed us two pairs of chopsticks when we asked for them. We also asked for boxes to take home leftovers (there was so much food), and 3 take-out boxes and a bag to carry everything were given to us. Classical music played throughout our time there, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere while we dined. All in all, we had another 5-star experience at China Cafe. No, you're not going to get Michelin star service, but you will get authentic flavors at a fair price. The chicken and broccoli was very disappointing. It had zero flavor. You can tell by how white it is. It was cooked well, but desperately needed seasoning and a sauce. Somehow at 5 pm, I was hungry enough to devour 5 dishes with my family. My sister dragged me here after having frequent date nights and takeouts. All the meat and seafood dishes are out of this world. It was my first trying fried duck, which came with the brown sauce. A similar experience to eating Peking duck, minus the wraps/baos. The cumin beef was so tender and flavorful. I enjoyed the kung pao chicken- plenty of meat and good crispy batter proportion. But my all time favorite dish was the battered salt and pepper scallops. Seemed very impatient and when I was trying to communicate with my autistic 7 yr old over what he wanted for rice, she interrupted again saying "fried? Fried? Fried?" I've eaten at China Cafe for years. Tonight I ordered the Kun Pao Shrimp. It had no sauce. It was weird, it just had shrimp that had been cooked in sauce and green peppers and carrots and peanuts sauteed without any sauce. The owner said it's not supposed to have sauce, but that's what makes it Kung Pao Shrimp! The sauce should be a broth with bold flavors from soy sauce, hoisin and sesame oil. A sprinkle of chili flakes add some heat (add a little or a lot). Please don't insult my intelligence. I know what Kung Pao Shrimp is supposed to be. Plenty of delicious Szechuan flavor to it without being too spicy. Slightly numbing after several bites without being overbearing. The pork was tender and a good texture to contrast the silken tofu. I paired the dish with a Lodi Cabernet which gave it almost a lingering smokiness. Egg roll was crispy and fried well. I do wish for the price point that you would get 2 egg rolls instead of just 1.
