I'll be honest--I avoided China Cafe for a while because of the older Yelp reviews. But last night I needed something quick, ordered on DoorDash, and I'm really glad I gave them a chance. Everything I ordered was actually solid. The lo mein? Chef's kiss. The noodles were cooked perfectly, nice and saucy, and they even offered it spicy--which I've never been offered before. The meat was tender and well-seasoned. Personally, I wouldn't mind a little more cabbage in it, but that's just preference. The fried chicken wings really surprised me. Usually I end up throwing wings in the air fryer to crisp them up more--but not these. They were already crispy, fresh, and flavorful straight out the container. Now let me talk about the sweet and sour chicken... I've NEVER been a fan. I always thought it looked too breaded and soggy, so I avoided it for years. When I opened my order and realized that's what I got, I was low-key annoyed but decided to try it anyway. And wow--that ended up being my favorite item. The sauce was perfect, and once I dipped it myself, it completely changed my mind about sweet and sour chicken. The soup was also really good--super flavorful with that rich broth and those sesame oil "gold spots" on top (you know it's good when you see that). The only thing I wasn't big on was the plain fried rice--but that's more of a personal preference since I usually don't go for plain fried rice anyway. Next time I'll try the house fried rice. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised. This was a great experience, especially for a last-minute order. This used to be my favorite Chinese spot years ago; the original owner was truly one of a kind. While I'm not sure how many times ownership has changed since 2013, none of the subsequent versions have lived up to that standard. I stopped by for lunch and was disappointed to learn they were takeout only, no longer taking dine-in seating. I ordered the shrimp and broccoli with a small side of rice, and while the taste was good, the portion size for the price was inadequate. The most disappointing part, however, was the pre-packaged wonton chips that came with the egg drop soup. Unfortunately, this will be my final visit. read more

Normally I only go to Golden Wok but it's so far out on Wendover and this place is closer to downtown Greensboro, I thought I'd try. Ordered a pint of shrimp fried rice, hot n sour soup, and some crab rangoons. Everything came out within 10 minutes- hot and tasty. Shrimp had a nice snap, and the soup had good flavor. Typically hot and sour soups around Greensboro are a bit bland but not here. Not sure why I don't see more people here. Pleasantly surprised. Go n' show em some love. We are always looking for very good Americanized Chinese food - you know, decent egg roll, fried rice, egg foo young, hot & sour soup, chicken wings, Szechuan Beef or Chicken, and so forth. There just are not many places in Greensboro that CONSISTENTLY serve up good versions of these kinds of dishes. Golden Dragon is usually pretty good but the service aspects keep me from going there. Golden Wok is solid but it is a hassel getting in and out of that location. This place offered some nice food for a while, but then the place changed hands, and the food and service suffered badly, to say the least. We were encouraged to try it again now that there is new ownership (since June) that seems on the right track. But alas, we cannot join those who praise the culinary efforts here. This food is ordinary at best, with the majority of the dishes split between the rather unusual, and the just not good. The appetizers were the best of breed, well mostly -the Chicken Wings were excellent, everything you'd want in a Chinese wing; the Shrimp Egg Roll was equally nice, and contained shrimp that could be recognized as such; the Pork Dumplings were not at all to our liking, with an herb or spice that simply overpowered everything, awful stuff; and the Hot & Sour Soup was very good, loaded with flavor & an enjoyable amount of heat. After the apps, everything kinda went to hell. The Black Pepper Chicken was a bizarre version - heavily breaded, no sauce, no onion, no pepper, no flavor, no re-order. The Szechuan Beef would not have been bad had we ordered Pepper Steak, but we didn't order Pepper Steak - no spice, no heat, and there was broccoli in it, MEH! Re-order not an option. The Orange Beef was equally unimpressive - doughy, with no spice or heat. The Pork Egg Foo Young, itself, was not bad, but the "gravy" was too sweet, smothered the taste of everything else. The Shrimp Chow Mein was not at all bad in taste, but had few shrimp, and was mostly cabbage - the noodles were nice though. The Fried Rice was the first we've encountered that was just rice - no vegetables, no meat, no egg, no flavor. The menu here is very broad, maybe too broad. The offer a full array of the usual Chinese dishes, as well as a small number of Japanese ones, including Miso Soup, Tempura, Gyoza, and a few Hibachi choices. The folks here are friendly, and the prices are reasonable, but there's just not nearly enough good, or even ordinary, to make a revisit likely. read more

Enjoyed a good dinner of Hot & Sour Soup, egg rolls, Chicken Lo Mein, and Kung Poa Chicken. The food was much better than several of the other places we have ordered from. Everything had more flavor than other delivery places. I really enjoyed the Kung Poa Chicken though some people would not have liked the veggies cooked as much. They were far from al dente which was fine with me. The Chick Lo Mein was really good. I like spicy food and China Cafe provides the option of choosing several levels of heat. Delivery time was about 45 minutes. China Cafe is our go-to Chinese delivery. read more

The food was acceptable but unexciting. I ordered crab rangoon, steamed dumplings, and beef and broccoli with steamed rice. At most Chinese restaurants, I order the beef and broccoli spicy, and it's never been a problem for the restaurant to toss in a bit of chili oil when stir frying. But China Cafe said they couldn't do that. Not a huge deal...the dish was a little bland, and the broccoli was a bit over cooked and mushy, but not terrible. They did, however, leave the white rice out of the bag. Since it was takeout, I wasn't going to drive 15 minutes each way for rice...I can make my own quicker than that. The steamed dumplings were disappointing: floppy, limp, and gummy. When I get these at other restaurants, they still have a bit of a bite to them, and I prefer them that way. The sauce that came with them was overly sweet. The crab rangoons were the highlight of the order--perfectly crispy, good filling-to-wonton ratio. I'd order these again. For everything else, I'd go somewhere else. read more

I have been going to China Cafe since it first opened & I think they are great in more ways than one. The food is awesome as is the service. They have the best egg foo young in town. No. Went by here for the first time because I was craving egg rolls and didn't want to make the trek to China's Best or Golden Wok. Those two places are top in my opinion for Chinese in the GSO area but this isn't their review. I went in on a Friday night around 830 and there was one patron waiting for her order, the rest of the place was empty. I had a pocket full of change and ordered up two egg rolls, $2.60. Cool. About 5 minutes later they were done but not before I witnessed two individuals coming from the kitchen eating egg rolls of their own. I should have known I was in for a GI adventure... The rolls themselves were unimpressive, smaller than their competitors and greasy, the filling bland and too wet. I was hungry so I drowned them in duck sauce. Within 8 hours I was in full purge mode, nasty stuff. To say the least I won't be paying these jokers a visit again. read more

Decent select on a Thursday grub hub meal. They were fast, 15 minutes, and the food wasn't too greasy like some Chinese places. They got the order right and the crab rangoon's were the best part. I think would order more nice time. Overall a pleasant Chinese experience would recommend for a quick lunch with decent prices. read more

We get Chinese at this place at least 2 times a month. It's quick and the lady is very friendly. The prices are fair and when you want a decent amount of food it is great. There are more places with more options that are more expensive but this works will in my budget. Also they offer a great lunch time buffet with classic options that is great! DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE BLACK AND DON'T WANT TO BE RACIALLY PROFILED!!!! When I arrived at this restaurant to pick up food that was already called in, the woman behind the counter was EXTREMELY nasty. Upon arriving, I was told that TWO different debit cards that I provided were not going to be accepted by her, and the only payment she would accept FROM ME is cash (her exact words). Mind you, everyone else that rolled through the restaurant had no issue paying with their cards. She even went as far as to say that I WAS HARASSING HER AND THREATENING TO CALL THE COPS ON ME! All while she's yelling at me for simply wanting to pay for the food that she already took the time to prepare. This local gem is back in a big way. This may again be the best Chinese food in Greensboro. There was a period when China Cafe was not good, but those days are over. That management team and chef have been replaced by new owners/managers/chefs who are friendly and have really restored, if not surpassed, the great food and service of original owners of the China Cafe. After not going to this restaurant for months due to bad food and poor experiences with the old management, I've been several times over the last couple of weeks since I discovered that new management has again taken over. I'm not sure how I feel about this place yet. I did carry out a few weeks ago and ordered sesame chicken. The serving was huge and the food was really good. Today, I tried the lunch buffet and I'm still out on it. The sesame chicken and sweet and sour chicken were great. Lo mein was average, egg rolls yummy, but the rest of the stuff didn't reallly float my boat. I'd probably go again because they're cheaper than the Chinese buffet on New Garden, but I can't say it's my favorite. read more

Well the place is completely empty and this lady started to help us and half way through my question another lady came out and sent her away and was being a total bitch to us throughout our order. Decent Americanized Chinese food. The general Tso's chicken and the kung pao chicken or shrimp are both good. The Mongolian beef is a good choice as well. Their close and they deliver, so it's sometimes the right choice. read more
