This is a hidden gem close to Pisgah Church/Lawndale. I really enjoyed my visit. There aren't many tables indoors, but there are more tables outside. This is more of a take out spot, but I think because it is so clean and has more tables, eating indoors is appealing. I appreciated being served in take out containers, because it made it easier to take leftovers. My daughter loved her milk tea. The gyoza was very good. The crab Rangoon was really tasty. I should have ordered two The real attraction is their seafood boils. I was tempted to get one, but I had the taste for General Tso's chicken. It wasn't bad. Tonight was my first visit to Mr. Kirin. I made an online pickup order, and it was ready in about 10 minutes. Even though I picked it up, I did take a moment to look around. The inside is small, but they have a lot of outdoor seating and a lovely patio. Along with Japanese, they also offer cajun-style seafood. Their pricing is very reasonable. This evening, I went with Japanese options, but I will be sure to try their seafood sometime soon. I got crab ragoons, onion soup, and the hibachi chicken, which comes with your choice of rice and either an egg roll or soup, I chose the egg roll. All of this was under $20, and so so good! The soup was hot and savory, and the crab ragoons were super creamy and delicious! The hibachi chicken was a large portion, and I mixed in a little white sauce. It was so yummy, but it could have used a little more vegetables and chicken as it was mostly rice. The egg roll was small but packed with flavor and perfectly crispy. Mr. Kirin is another restaurant on our new office location bucket list. My coworkers and I frequent here quite a lot. They have a large menu that features Cajun seafood (more expensive), pasta with chicken or shrimp and you can pick your sauce, Japanese hibachi, and a few Chinese dishes. They also offer a large bubble tea menu. Like I said, a wide array of choices. You order at the counter and then get your drink cup and pick a table. They bring your food out to you in takeout boxes, which is actually quite convenient because of the large portion sizes. The woman who works the counter is very busy but nice if you can have more than a few seconds with her. She always answers questions well and is quick to bring extra sauces if needed. They do a heavy takeout business so poor thing is always swamped but she handles it well. I can't speak for the Cajun seafood but plan to get it to take home to my family one day. It's just too much for a work lunch. The hibachi menu is extensive and features more than your average chicken, shrimp, and steak. They have scallops, tilapia, and salmon. So good! And the prices for the hibachi is very reasonable. The ambiance is generic but I don't care with the food being so delicious and quick! I said hello to Mr. Kirin after reading many reviews that lead me here and this is my takeaway. Upon entering it was very quiet with about nine quest. The greeting upon entering was like crickets hmm, so I asked lots of questions and the answers are friendly. I guess problem solved lol. I order the chicken, shrimp hibachi with veggies and a crispy spring roll. I sat outside and what a perfect day to do so. The food was delicious. I mean it could use some seasoning, but if you want a dish that is sodium friendly then this is it. I wanted a touch more of seasoning, so I mixed my soy with the ginger sauce. Then I poured it over the shrimp, chicken, and rice boom problem solved. The veggies are good dipped into the white yum sauce. Adding a crunchy crispy spring roll and I am a happy girl. This is my new favorite Japanese hibachi go to restaurant now. Also, noteworthy is the amount of food for the price well worth it with a clean atmosphere. I don't know why but I always want take-out Hibachi on Sunday nights and for whatever reason none of my regular places are open that day. Well this time I was determined and turned to my trusted friend Yelp and searched relentlessly. I came across Mr. Kirin which I had never been too before, but heard of. They were open on Sundays! Not only do they have a wide variety of hibachi entries available they also do a lot of Cajun food, which I thought was interesting. I will have to try that side of the menu sometime in the future. I am trying to eat more seafood and was delighted that they not only had the standard shrimp and scallops, but also salmon and red snapper. I also felt their prices were very reasonable as seafood especially is very expensive right now. I got the Hibachi chicken and snapper and it was only $11.25. Rice and vegetables are the standard hibachi sides, but Mr. Kirin takes it a step further and gives you the option of an egg roll or soup as well. I went for the soup and was further surprised when I even had an option on the soup for onion or miso. I got the onion soup. I also asked for all vegetable (no rice) and they didn't charge me an up-charge which is standard at most places. So far so good! When I opened my take-out container once I got home, I was very happy with what I saw. The vegetables were large pieces, colorful, and plentiful. The seasoning and preparation of the onions, zucchini, and carrots was very good. The snapper was tasty and still crispy on the edges. I was a little disappointed that the chicken was covered in a sweet/teriyaki type sauce by default. I'm sure many people like it like that, and I enjoyed its taste alright but it clearly had lot of sugar and not my preference. Will be sure to ask if can get without next time. The onion soup was a nice size and enjoyable as well. Kind of helped fill you up a bit. I enjoyed my hibachi meal very much with some hot mustard (their version definitely has more wasabi/horseradish kick fyi) and ginger sauce, and absolutely had enough leftover for another meal the next day. We honestly don't know what's going on with this cuisine combination, but we love it. We've ordered delivery twice. First time, my partner and I both ordered from the Cajun section of the menu and loved it. Second time, we had her parents with us. Three people ordered Japanese and one ordered Cajun. So we've now been able to check out a few dishes from both halves of this very unusual menu. We both prefer the Cajun stuff. It comes in the plastic bag the meal was steamed in, accompanied by a bib. We don't have seafood-cracking tools at home, so we improvised (successfully) with a lever-style citrus juicer, but if you're smarter than we were, you'll order shrimp and other stuff that doesn't need to be cracked in the first place unless you have the tools. The flavors were great, and the potatoes and corn came out as perfectly as the seafood, both times. We were both daydreaming of the Cajun food for a week after our first order. The hibachi is strong, too. Compared to other area hibachis, it tastes more restauranty and less fast-foody. Not oily. My salmon and scallops were cooked really nicely and weren't weighed down by grease or any other noticeable additives. My partner's mom's chicken didn't look gummy; her dad's snapper looked as nice as my seafood. The veggies were all nice; none were mushy. So if hibachi is your thing, you can't go wrong. But besides being a job well done, nothing really stands out about the hibachi half of the menu. Not compared to the stellar Cajun side. We're talking good food compared with great food. Food you're satisfied with versus food you want to tell everyone about. Of course, if budget is a concern, you'll probably look at the menu and skew hibachi anyway. Certainly, fresh seafood comes at a price. But if you can swing it, the price is well worth it. The Cajun seasonings are more of a standout, and the presentation -- even with delivery -- is like it's from an establishment that's a cut above the one you got the hibachi from. Pro-tip because we thought the ordering form was a little ambiguous: If you're ordering delivery through DoorDash, the hibachi already comes with veggies. If you click add-ons, you're getting additional veggies (which, frankly, most of us can always eat more of anyway). We did have an ordering issue. My partner's lobster tail and shrimp actually arrived as crawfish and shrimp. She's happy to eat crawfish, but the difference in price was significant ($10 that day, but market prices change), so we reported the issue to DoorDash, and they refunded the difference. If there's one thing I'd like to see Mr. Kirin do in the future, it's to try to develop a fusion section of the menu. It's hard to believe that when the kitchen is able to do two completely different things so well, they'd have trouble combining the two, even for just a couple of dishes. It's very odd to have two cuisines under the same roof like this, so they might as well make the most of it. Until then, we'll happily keep getting what they offer. read more

As I am diabetic, I ordered Hibachi Chicken (not the Teriyaki) meal. After a short drive home, I opened the box to find the dry tough chicken thigh meat drenched in teriyaki and cold, undercooked vegetables. Finally had lunch at Mr Kirin today. They have redone the space, formerly Jams Deli, and it's very bright and nicely decorated with Japanese Knick knacks. There is a large tv on the wall but it wasn't on and there was no music playing so was awkwardly quiet. I got the hibachi shrimp with miso soup. The soup was good but the rice and veggies were a bit disappointing. No color on the veggies at all, almost tasted like they were steamed, not cooked on the flat top. The rice was ok, a bit bland, soy sauce helped. The shrimp were rather large and cooked nicely, no veins ++. The white and ginger sauces were tasty. The staff was not overly friendly and barely spoke to me. I really wanted to love this place since it's right next door to my nail salon but there are much better options for this type of cuisine close by. Bummer. read more
