Best Chinese take out place around this area. No MSG and you can ask for some modification of the order and they are very good at doing so. I tried this restaurant for the first time a few weeks ago for takeout. Overall, this place is a solid choice (nothing fancy, but tasty food). I ordered the lo mien dish and my boyfriend ordered the general tso's chicken. Both of these entrees came with fried rice and an egg roll. The portions were huge! We could have easily shared one with some to spare. We shared an order of fried wontons. Everything that we ordered were tasty. There was nothing mind blowing about each dish, but it definitely fulfilled the Chinese takeout craving quite adequately. The price was right, portions were large. This was my first time ordering from China Chef. I was pleasantly surprised at the food quality and the freshness. The portion sizes are perfect and generous. I got the spring rolls, chicken with broccoli, beef with pea pod, beef fried rice, and egg drop soup. Everything was wonderful seasoned and perfectly made. I badly wanted to give this place more stars but I really can't. It wasn't very clean, we went inside to eat not long after they opened, but really needed a good cleaning. Our table hadn't been wiped. The family working was eating in the dining area ( I have no personal issue with this) and we felt a bit rushed when looking at the menu. Was our first time there, and we had questions. We ordered 3 lunch specials and they came out one at a time. The food was decent but more like a Panda Express type decent. We asked for water and were given warm tap water. The price was decent and I wouldn't mind another try in the future, but we left pretty unfulfilled. These high ratings are a joke. Either you are satisfied with sub par low grade Chinese food or you have no pallet for GOOD Chinese food. In my 45 years of eating Chinese food I have never stopped eating because of poor tasting, low grade, absolute trash! Both the chicken and the beef were dry, overcooked, tasteless. No matter how much spice you put in a dish it still didn't cover up the off tasting vegetables and meat. I threw everything out it was where this food belongs in the TRASH! Wow. I've been to A LOT of Chinese restaurants throughout Chicago and all of Illinois and this by far has been one of the worst. To be fair I probably should have tried this place a couple of more times before writing my review but I don't see myself ever wasting money at this place again. First of all this place doesn't deliver, probably one of the few (if not the only) Chinese restaurants that doesn't. Second of all the woman on the phone GRUNTED at me throughout my entire order, I could only assume those sounds were affirmations. She literally sounded like she didn't want to be on the phone at all. So we ordered the Mongolian beef, a large pork fried rice, vegetable soup and a side of beef sticks and it somehow came out to almost $25. Oddly enough, there was only one size for the Mongolian beef. I hate places that don't offer multiple sizes for their "popular" dishes such as General Tso's chicken, Orange Chicken etc. Just an excuse to charge more I suppose. All this wouldn't have been a problem at all if the food was great, hell I would've even settled for mediocre. The fried rice didn't even look like chinese fried rice, it looked like bad spanish rice but tasted like nothing. Bland and horrible, same with the beef sticks. But the Mongolian beef was by far the worst. What we thought was a humongous portion was in fact more than half full of vegetables and was absolutely DRENCHED in black pepper! Not cooked, but covered, after the fact with normal table-top black pepper. Without the pepper the Mongolian beef would have been tasteless, but the mounds of pepper they used made it a hot mess. If I wasn't starving I would have honestly thrown it out after the first bite. If you're in the Gurnee/Grayslake area and in the mood for Chinese food I recommend going ANYWHERE else but here. At the very least the alternative will deliver. Hell I'd even rather go to Panda Express, if I have to drive to pick up the food anyways I might as well. I like supporting small businesses but I can't in good conscience recommend China Chef. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken and the Mongolian Beef. 1st, the General's...It was decent. That's the best I can say, not bad, not good, but decent. Sauce was ok, had a decent flavor, chicken was deep fried..standard fare. Now to the Mongolian Beef...My god, what a complete travesty. The beef was RUBBER. Pure rubber. And the taste, or lack of taste, just completely bland. Oh and I love how they notate that there are crunchy rice noodles in the dish, yet you get like maybe 10 as they are completely buried at the bottom and never factor into the dish. Overall, this place was the epitome of meh-terrible. It gets 2 stars because at least the General's was edible and not terrible. But honestly, I'd never go back even if was starving for chinese food. Best Chinese food I've had in the area. Much better quality than the popular competitors. We ordered orange chicken, chicken fried rice and two egg rolls. The egg rolls were crisp and not greasy at all. The orange chicken was a generous portion-- we even had left overs which never happens. Egg roles were okay but about the same as frozen ones you cook at home. Fried rice was devoid of flavor. Beef lo mein was dry and the meat tasted as if it was boiled. This restaurant has potential, but I have to review my dining experience. It was a delivery through door dash, ordered Shrimp Egg Foo Yung, along with vegetable fried rice, and two spring rolls. The Egg Foo Yung, on the edges was delicious, but as we ate more and more, it was apparent that it was not fully cooked through, as at its thickest points, it was gelatinous, and gooey. Me and my mom came to visit for the first time, I won't say this place is pleasing to look at. However the food here is Amazing! We ordered the bourbon chicken, a egg roll, and a order of Crab Rangoons. When we got home and ate it, it tasted INCREDIBLE! Also the food here is really reasonably priced, which is a plus. Not to mention the portions, Me and my mom barely finished our order. Also the front desk lady was super nice, and the wait is not that long usually should be around 10-15 minutes, and even if it was more, I would say it would be worth it. The food was decent but the service & attitude I got was very poor. This was the first time I had been here so first impressions are everything. From the moment I approached the counter, all I got from the woman working there was attitude. She was very unpleasant and acted as if my being there was an inconvenience. The lunch entree I ordered came to $7 and some change and then she asked if I had cash when I presented my debit card for payment. Apparently, you can't charge anything there unless it's over $10 or they charge you extra. So she asks me if it's alright if she can charge me an extra $.25 and I said fine. I was thinking to myself "this is the last time I'll come here." How cheap. I ended up eating my lunch there and as I waited for my food I looked around the place and it was not very clean at all. The worst part was they brought it out on one of those cheap, styrofoam plates that ended up melting in spots where the egg roll was placed right on it after being deep fried.
