My family & I have been ordering Chinese food from China Chef since I first knew what Chinese food was (I'm 26, if it matters). I totally agree that China Chef might not be as esteemed if there were more Chinese restaurants in the area, but it's one of those places that I am in love with because I feel like the restaurant has seen me grow up. I'm a city gal now, and I still love coming home to the parentals and ordering China Chef. All in all, it IS good food. Morton Grove might suck, but this place is pretty good Best. Egg rolls. Ever. There aren't many decent Chinese restaurants in Morton Grove, but China Chef makes the grade. They have a lot of Filipino items (the owner is Filipino) too, but the Chinese food is nothing to sneeze at. We were recommended by a couple people to try China Chef & were disappointed. The first time we ordered we had it delivered & the food was lukewarm at best & the quality was fair. After a couple months my father in law asked if we would order again, maybe they had a bad day. This time my husband picked it up & the food again was just fair. The general tsao chicken was hard with no spice or flavor to it at all. China Chef's prices are higher, with smaller portions, than other Chinese restaurants in the area. With all the other options for good Chinese food in Morton Grove, do yourself a favor & go there. I would not recommend China Chef. read more

I'm a fan of this place. I've been eating here for decades and although I've moved 20 miles away, I do enjoy coming back for consistently good food. Being of the Asian persuasion, I may be pickier than most and can give it an okay rating. The nice thing is the food is the same as it was 20 years ago when I used to come here. In particular, the food had good flavor but each dish had some discrepancy about it that was missing just a little something. First, we had the sizzling rice soup, good and flavorful but not enough of the sizzling rice. There is enough soup for 4 people but only 2 small cakes of sizzling rice, so I did without. Second, the Ma-Po Tofu had good flavor but the tofu was not diced but served in chunks so not all the tofu got all the flavor. (I admit this might be really picky) Third, the Shrimp Egg Fu Young was too greasy and you could see the oil separate from the gravy which made it unappetizing. Fourth and finally, the Moo Shu Chicken had decent flavor but the pancakes used were flour tortillas instead of rice flour pancakes and the chunks of chicken were so big that you couldn't wrap the food into the tortillas without make a mess. I would go back, but likely order different entrees, maybe Shrimp with Walnuts or Mongolian Beef which is harder to make bad or insufficient. read more

The food is average, contrary to what they advertise! Their egg-rolls are good but vague in pricing $2.99-3.99 What the hell does that mean? Is it one Egg roll $2.99 and if you get two then it's $ 3.99?? Are you kidding, 2.99 for one egg roll? I don't care how good it is, it's not worth $2.99 for one egg roll! I have tried several of their dishes, and I find them to be OK. Nothing to write home about:) However, in particular, a popular dish, "Kung Bao Chicken" lacks flavor and quality, not an authentic dish at all. It's rather filled with anything and everything as fillers to make this dish. Filled with Lots of zucchini and not much else. I also notice too many Philippine dishes on their menu. Is it a Philippine-Chinese restaurant? A little confusing. Very disappointed with our dining experience. The waiter that we had was just plain awful. He was overwhelmed while the waiter taking care of the tables next to us was on top of everything. Usually, you have order envy from the tables next to you. Instead, we wished that we had their waiter. Our entrees came to us like warm. When you first walk in to China Chef, you see enormous fish in their aquariums. These are decorative, and not for eating. I only bring this up because when I first started coming to China Chef, these were regular sized gold fish. They're now leviathans of massive bulk. Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that I've been coming here a long time. I admit, it's not as good as food my Lola used to make me when I was but a lass. But it is very good. The eggrolls are considerably better than most Chinese places I've eaten. The entrees are of a very large size (my sister got what was approximately a boatload [no, really, it was shaped like a boat] of food last time) and are quite tasty. And what I like best about the food is that it tastes pretty authentic. It's not the Friendship Chinese blandmobile rolling through your table. It's not pseudo-Asian fusion meets Southwest concept in a crazy new way. It's Chinese and Filipino food, and it tastes like Chinese and Filipino food. Which is what it's supposed to taste like. The building itself is unassuming. A little brick building with a parking lot. But the inside has a number of real pieces of Chinese history. Not Ming Dynasty vases or anything, but the kind of thing you'd have seen growing up in America in an Asian household. I like the staff, a lot. They're very patient and understanding. They're willing to accommodate substitutions and special requests. They're very good with large groups of people, not getting frustrated with the slow ordering process and questions and problems that usually come with it. In all honesty, I want to give this place five stars, but I don't know if I can. It's a great place to go for a good, solid meal. But I'm never going to rave about it the way I do about Kuma's. I'm never going to drive the hour+ to get there through rush hour traffic. But I will be going back, and I will enjoy it, and wonder why I don't eat there more often. read more

Been to China Chef several times, and overall it's hit-or-miss as to how the food will come out. A couple times the food came out good, tasty, chicken was crispy, and overall enjoyable. Then a couple other times the food came out sloppy, soggy, slopped together, and not enjoyable. I've tried their mongolian beef, fried chicken, fired smelt, fried rice, etc...overall, okay...on the good days. Hopefully one day they'll be consistent and serve good food 365 days of the year. Overall, okay food, okay service, reasonable prices. Probably 2.5 Stars, but I'll round it up to 3. P.S. - This place is good for parties or groups, as they can accommodate a large get together. read more

The 3 items I only order from here 1.) Mongolian Beef (what they are known for) probably the best Mongolian beef out there 2.) Mongolian fish (Mongolian sauce on small fish fillets) a must if you like seafood 3.) crab Rangoon and China chef specialty egg rolls! They have just the right amount of meat inside the wrappings. Absolutely must try it with their specialty sweet and sour sauce (not to sweet either!) Overall this place has great service and has a party place in the back. They're great to adults and children (family friendly restaurant) They do have lunch specials but you get what you pay for literally (huge portions) They do serve alcohol and bubble tea Parking lot is a little small but they're are additional side street parking across. I thought I'd finally found a Chinese Restaurant that doesn't use MSG...they don't put any additional in, but they do have it in the soy sauce. For clarifications, I asked if it's just in the packets that we take home, or in the stuff they use when cooking the food? She said the MSG is in the soy sauce that they use in making the food. ugh...almost. Spring rolls are delicious !!! They also have a kicking kimchi they give you upon arrival . Pot stickers are really good but they only have beef. Crab Rangoon is banging ! Only giving one star because I have to...this is not the same China Chef! First of all it's Filipino food, not Chinese, big difference...the egg rolls tasted like curry powder and were nothing like Chinese egg rolls, the look like they are, but the taste was horrendous. Then I got beef fried rice and it tasted like some kind of cheap fish, I literally took one bite of each and threw the rest away! Came on Christmas. The restaurant was very busy, so we had to wait around 10 min to get a table for 6 people (not bad at all). Service was good considering how packed the place was. Food was coming steadily and servers were trying to be as efficient as possible. I've been bringing my family and ordering from here since we moved to the area 10 years ago. We usually order for carry out, although we have dined in before. The place itself has a very quaint atmosphere. The food is delicious, some of the family favorites are the Pancit, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and Beef and Broccoli. After our thanksgiving meal, we were in the mood for chinese, and figured to give this place a try, as a result of their overall 4 star rating on Yelp, which was a huge mistake. Based on the quality of food we ate from our carry out order, I have no idea why China Chef would receive any rating over 1 star. We tried ordering on their website, but their guess the website, doesn't allow it or it's never been set up. If that's the case, they should remove that link. Orange Beef was the worst tasting orange beef. Beef was soggy, not a hint of crispiness which it should have, and where was the orange ? Combination Cantonese Pan Fried Noodles was not pan fried, All noodles were soft, with no flavor to the ingredients, and lastly, Sweet/Sour Shrimp, should have been called vinegar shrimp. Only positive experience was the order was ready upon pickup, and they had a huge parking lot. Go to any other chinese restaurant , (north, south, east, & west) Chicagoland), but I would not recommend this place. I would say this place is great because of the prices. The food is not the best but the staff is friendly and its in a good location. They do have a large menu to accomodate many tastes. And they even have bubble tea, so you can just go there for desert if you want. I recommend. read more

My family has been going to China Chef since I was a small child and I have yet to be disappointed. As a kid I would stick with fried rice and beef chop suey-- both of which are excellent. As an adult, I have branched out and have tried their pot stickers, orange chicken, lo mein, among other delicious dishes. On my most recent visit, I tried one of their alcoholic beverages. It was sweet and refreshing, and probably dangerously alcoholic (though I could not taste any alcohol). One of my favorite things about this restaurant is the fact that they bring every table hot tea. read more

After seeing this come up on Yelp as highest rated in our area, we had to try it. Ordered delivery from this place tonight. Delivery came in a decent time (30 min) and it was delicious! We ordered sweet and sour chicken (great, the chicken was all white meat and breaded, tasted fresh, not too greasy), chicken in garlic brown sauce (seriously I could drink this chicken and sauce combination), and beef chow fun (my boyfriend said the best chow fun noodles he's ever had, and the beef was tender and tasty). Everything was hot and fresh. You can tell its made with love. BEST Chinese food we've found so far since moving to Skokie (which they will deliver to!) Another plus: the cutest old Chinese man delivering it to me and thanking me a million times. Love it. Will definitely be ordering from them again. read more

This is probably my favorite place to get Mongolian beef with their hot oil. Ive been to many Chinese places and always china chefs Mongolian beef comes out on top. My family and I have been coming here for about 18 years and have noticed the quality go down. We typically get carry out/delivery but decided to dine in on Christmas Eve with just two people. The service was pretty bad, we got seated and had to wait 10 minutes for a waiter to come and acknowledge us. When she finally came, She brought us water and tea. By then we all ready knew what we wanted but the waiter told us to wait and disappeared for another ten minutes to take our order. I ordered a sprite and needed a refill when I was done with my appetizer. The main dishes come and I ask for a refill and she says ok 2 minutes and runs away before we could ask for a water refill. We end up filling up on our food and the sprite came when we were done. I was still not upset as I noticed their was only two waiters working but what got me upset enough to leave a review was the ending to our meal. As we got the check, the waiter stayed and watched us pay with cash. She proceeded to take the cash and count it in front of us as we were still sitting their. She realized that we did have the money and tip and proceeded to wish us a happy Christmas and new year. There was no rush to leave our table like before. We even left a 20% tip but I felt like taking it back after that disrespectful moment. If your going to eat from here, there carry out/delivery is the way to go. read more

Really happy with this place! I tried it for the first time, and I loved it. All the food tasted made to order and came out nice and hot. The egg rolls, mongolian chicken and sesame chicken were all delicious. The servings are very large, and I was very happy with the quality of each entree. I would recommend either of those two entrees; they both were well-prepared and worth the price. The egg rolls were a nice thick size, and tasted fresh like they had just been prepared for our order. The only thing I tried that was not a huge success was the egg drop soup-- a little bland, but nothing to stop me from returning. read more

As we were served, a new father hijacked the booth directly across from us and changed his baby's diaper directly on the seat. Staff acted oblivious and later an unsuspecting family was seated there. I went there today really looking forward to their combination fried rice with large wonton BBQ pork soup. After the server brought out my dish something didn't look right and she asked if I ordered shrimp fried rice or combination. I said combination and she knew she brought out the wrong dish but said it was combination. After eating half of it I then realized this wasn't tasting right so I called the server back and had explained this was missing pork. I then said this is definitely not combination but shrimp fried rice. I was really pissed off because I only eat out once a month and while the server told me they will make me another dish to goz I told him the reason I don't order to go dishes is because they skimp on ingredients. Anyway the quality of the food has gone down as the wonton soup that I remember had a lot more ingredients. This looked pale in comparison. And the shrimp fried rice was not very good.
