Why haven't I found this place earlier? I love their food! I ordered from the website for pickup. The site stated when order would be ready and order was available right on time! Private parking lot is what I appreciated as I have a big car. Other big cars were in the lot as well. There is indoor dining and diners and to go customers (like myself) were pleased with their orders. I ordered moo shu shrimp and 2 egg rolls-so delicious!! The sauce was fantastic! This place has been around for decades. It's a nice alternative for those who don't want to fight traffic to Chinatown, but want to say they went to China Town....... Restaurant ;-) The decor of this place is somewhat old. Food wise, it was OK, but honestly not a place we would probably visit again. There's just so many other authentic Chinese restaurants and this place, being on Dempster, isn't quite close to the major highways like other places (Minghin, Chef Ping, etc) but its a nice location if you're more in the city. read more

They promised to prepare it quickly in 15 minutes. 30 minutes later, I was on my way to the family gathering with all the hungry guests. One staff person was extremely apologetic, but the rest were pretty apathetic. Will update this review after we eat if the food is either outstanding or dismal. When I saw the deep fried flounder picture, I had to come. After living in the SF Bay area and enjoying this wonderful dish then moving here unable to find it, I came for dinner. I didn't care about the $30 price...until I tasted it. Huge disappointment. It was over fried. It didn't come with the eel-like sauce I got in Oakland. There was only a little moist tender meat. The rest was tough and inedible. Just awful. I also ordered the Lechon Kawaii and lumpia and roast duck and the combo fried rice. The Lechon was really good, but overnight the skin turned tough. The sauce was decent. Not like what you get at Filipino restaurants. The Lumpia was also meh. Small, and with no flavor. A waste of money. The roast duck was deep fried. Not roasted with the five spice flavors. Hoisin sauce, not the roast duck jus that you get from Jason's across the street. They should have gotten Jason's duck and served that. The fried rice was not inspiring. Had some shrimp but looked bland a few pieces of pork. Service was good. But I'm never returning. read more

Very impressed with how quickly they cook their food. I made a to-go order and they had it ready in less than 10 minutes. I ordered the beef chow fun, crab rangoons, and the garlic eggplant. The total was like $37 so everything was really affordable as well. Everything tasted good, but it was a little heavy on the oil. After eating a whole plate of the food, I could taste the amount of oil the noodles had been cooked with. And the egg plant had been fried in oil as well. Taste wise, everything was decent, I think the eggplants could have used a little more sweet sauce to make it taste like the traditional 鱼香茄子. Crab rangoons were ok, I didn't see any crab pieces in the filling, just a lot of cream cheese. Pleasantly surprised with how many options there were on the menu. They also do Chinese Filipino dishes. Unfortunately the food was a little too heavy for me where it was difficult to eat a lot of it, so this is not going to be a regular takeout place for me. Lots of parking around the restaurant. Bathrooms were kind of old but clean. Service was friendly and efficient. read more

My parents really wanted to try out this restaurant in the area, so we ordered a pickup. The portions were hefty, and they thoughtfully loaded all the food boxes into a larger cardboard pallette for ease of lifting. The value was definitely there in terms of amount of food, but the flavor was not quite what I'm used to: quite a bit sweeter for items like Szechuan String Beans which weren't spicy at all (a bit peculiar given the name). The Mapo Tofu in particular was not spicy at all and didn't quite fit the bill for me in terms of, again, the name of the dish. The Eggplant in Garlic Sauce was pretty good, but I found the taste to again lean heavily sweet instead of a balance of flavors. The meat dishes we ordered were fine, but for me not all that memorable. Tasty but ultimately nothing stood out. I think the food is decent here, and the order came in quickly when we placed it. However, I'm not sure that it really fits my taste as someone who enjoys spicier Chinese food. read more

I was excited to try this restaurant, as it is modest, old fashioned American Chinese style with a good egg roll. The Eggroll was in fact quite tasty. The roast pork soup and wonton had a thin and light flavored broth that lacked punch. It was heavily noodled with not much to comment on except for it being unremarkable. The wonton tasted fresh as did the soup ingredients. The space itself was lively with regular clients who seemed to enjoy the cooking, the staff was attentive without special note. The interior is relatively freshly painted but there is a lack of sparkle to the place, from the dark aquarium in the entry to the plastic picnic table oilcloths to place seemed tired, if clean. The carpeting was old and glum giving the environments a worn down look despite the other minimal decor efforts and adequate cleaning. It has a "better days" vibe that, I guess, does most of it's business as take-out. I can't slam the place, but I can't really recommend it over any other place that you might already occasionally frequent. read more

My family and I used to go to Chinatown restaurant all the time. However, on our most recent visit, the food just does not taste the same. Had their lunch specials and there was a lot of gravy that just over-powered the meal. i had the shrimp and lobster sauce and they definitely started using smaller shrimp than the previous owner did. Got their egg roll as well, and the egg roll was burnt. This was such a good "go to" place before, but they must have changed owners and/or cooks. read more

I was also working in the area for a week and wanted leftovers for lunch and dinner. The menu was extensive. Even included Filipino food. I ordered 2 egg rolls, an order of fried pot stickers, an order of crab rangoons, and sesame chicken. Hot tea was included. Boy! Everything was huge. The pot stickers were a little too thick for me and I didn't care for the texture of the meat. The rangoons seemed to be made of the same wrap as the pot stickers, which was too thick. I really enjoyed the flavor. I didn't care for the egg roll. It was too thick and I didn't like the meat. I'm used to the Rangoons and egg rolls made with egg roll wraps (thin ones). I thought the sesame chicken was made with breast meat but it was thigh meat. It was still good. Crispy and a good sauce. There was some broccoli on the plate and a side of steamed rice. Eating here is kind of like going back in time because it looks like this restaurant hasn't changed much. It's one of the oldest restaurants in Morton Grove and is a classic Chinese American with lots of the old favorites you're familiar with. China Town Restaurant gives you a lot on your plate, except flavor. Maybe they're also using old ingredients. The prices are great which helps but not a lot though. Came at lunch and we got the only vegetarian choice. It was the Tofu With Vegetables. There was a lot of rice with it, and quite a bit of the rest as well. It's about $7 for an entree. Why it's so cheap is revealed when you eat something. Apparently they're saving on spices because the food didn't seem to have any. There was a light garlic sauce. And man it was light. The rest of the menu has meaty stuff like beef, chicken, and seafood. Basically not much of a reason for us to come again. They sucked at the one thing we can get. Best thing about this place is the classic Chinese American restaurant atmosphere. If you're looking for that then it's something you'll like about here. Shrimp is smaller and there are way fewer pieces, barely any beef or chicken in the dishes. They gave us burnt egg rolls which they should have thrown out and not served to customers. The Chinese food I remember from my early 20's! I couldn't find tasty Chinese dishes like this for quite a while now. I can't believe I found it 5 min away from home in Morton Grove. We enjoyed eggshells that were fried just right! Golden delicious and not greasy. The sweet and sour chicken had lovely chunks of white meat with the right amount of breading. You could actually find the chicken! I would have enjoyed more pineapple, tomato and peppers, however. Still a great dish served with a big bowl of white rice. My husband really enjoyed the Mongolian beef! Large, tender, pieces of meat with onions and greens. The noodles were barely there, but it was tasty nonetheless! The dining area was nothing fancy, but comfortable seating with booths and tables, some large enough to fit bigger parties. There was a table for eight with a lazy Susan in the center to easily share dishes. The food portions were large with enough to take home. The wait staff was very welcoming and pleasant. A big plus is that it was peaceful. No loud noise where you can't hear the people you're sitting with. A definite plus in my book! read more

This is our family go to place for any occassions. Tonight for our Chinese New Year Dinner. We had: Potstickers - they have fried and steamed. We ordered both. I do prefer the steamed one but i'm not super fond of potstickers. Whole Steamed fish - you have a choice between Tilapia and Flounder. This was cooked perfectly. I am not a fish person but I did like this. Its clean and cooked perfectly and its not fishy if u know what i mean. Seafood Hot and Sour Soup. This is one of my favorite and theirs is one of the good ones so far. Egg Drop Soup. This is nothing special. Its the same as everyone elses. PanFried Noodles. This is my favorite kind of noodles. Tonight we had the Pork BBQ one. But their Seafood is worth a try as well. Eight Treasures Tofu Casserole. This is a first for us. And surprisingly I liked it. It packed with tofu squid chicken and some veggies. It has a brown sauce. Not super saucy but just right to coat everything. And the best of all they give free chicken skin. I ordered the fish fillet and Chinese broccoli chow fun for take out. I would say it's okay. The sauce had decent flavor to it and wasn't heavy or too thick. I do wish there was more because I did want the noodles to be coated more in the sauce. I really like chow fun noodles in general, and these were ok, but a little disappointing because so much of it was still stuck together and I could just taste the unseasoned kinda doughy noodles. I was able to separate some of it and drench them in the sauce though. The fish was pretty good. Nothing special, but they were battered well and cooked well too. There was a decent amount of fish in the dish, so that made me happy :) Overall, I've definitely had better fish and broccoli chow fun, but this satisfied my craving for it. Hole in the wall restaurant with authentic Chinese food. It might look unassuming and a little old, but the restaurant is clean and the servers are very kind. I love that the appetizer is free chicken skin. We usually hold family gatherings here so we order a lot of food and it takes 20-30 minutes to prepared. My go-to dishes are the salt & pepper smelt, the mapo tofu, beef lo mein, walnut shrimp, roast duck, and beef stew casserole. All of the dishes are classic Chinese dishes that will be a hit with kids and adults all alike. Love that we can order enough food for 18 people but the price is affordable. read more

Quality vs quantity is the question. Which means more to you? If quantity is what intrigues, forget reading reviews and check them out. You will be happily surprised to learn exactly how much (pounds) food you can acquire. If quality means more, hard pass. Take out may be an option but their prepared food is greasy, over-salted and the quality is low. Flavors are unbalanced. High likelihood of sweet and sour. Tasty? "Bu." (No). It's been awhile since having their carryout and now since we've returned to dine in, decided to check them out. The sit down is dated. Vinyl booths and circular tables with dinner-turntables. Some booths have heavy usage and were repaired with duct tape. The restaurant itself is run down and areas out of customer view or towards the back near restrooms are in disrepair. DO NOT use the Men's room prior to eating. Had I, I would have lost appetite and left immediately. A urinal is out of use but the olfactory pollution can cause nausea. There is a strong urine odor that strikes your sinuses like a donkey kick to the head. (Worse than riding the red line #cta) Double masking is recommended. It is that off-putting. Decided to go with the flow of the elderly lunch crowd and order a lunch special. Dining in, you will receive an entree with pork fried rice and choice of soup. Hot tea and a hot bowl of soup can be comforting but that's where it ended for me. Also ordered some carryout for a family meal later that day. The order cost about $30 some dollars. You should have felt that weight. My relations thought I had spent double that amount given the weight of the bag. Then they tasted and nobody liked it so now I have a crap load of leftovers which no one had interest in taking home. Although affordable and similar to pre-pandemic pricing, their food is as good as any three starred, FF (fast food) Chinese restaurant found in any strip mall across Chicagoland. Their pricing has increased with inflation but not as grossly high as their higher rated competition. Those that are deal seekers or neighbors with fond nostalgia are keeping them afloat. For those fans of China chef (also in Morton Grove) they too offer Filipino-Chinese menu options. As I was eating that bowl of soup a message popped on my phone. TFG, the previous potus, (allegedly) awarded a failing trucking firm pandemic funds in the amount of some $700 million dollars. I was thinking, if only inept politicians worked better with society and this business were to gain even a tiny percentage, it would certainly turn things around. I'm sure at one time this was a thriving business that fed the neighborhood. read more

I'm impressed with China Town restaurant because they probably are in direct competition with China Chef (just 5 minutes away) and they do a very good job. They are super convenient, right off of Dempster and the parking lot situation is really easy. The service is solid and friendly. On one occasion, I forget if it was Christmas or New Years, mgmt. had served lobster to their employees, to acknowledge them. Wow, that was really heartfelt and as a diner, that was very heartwarming to see. I love employers who take care of their employees, I'll purposefully go back, to show my support. Their food is definitely comparable to China Chef and I've catered from China Town, on at least two occasions. I do like their Beef Chow fun and egg rolls. Guess what, China Town can prepare Filipino dishes, it's a limited menu but nonetheless, this is another big plus for me. My only suggestion is that they need to remodel their restaurant, it does look like it's stuck in the 80s. Aside from that, they have good food and service. read more

Nom nom nom! This place is the bomb as the cooking style reminds me of my dad's and uncle's restaurants. We first had China Town Restaurant at our same friends' house party. This place is pretty authentic -- the portions are decent and the prices are excellent. We've made special trips to China Town Restaurant from Lake View to get the good eats offered here. I really like the shrimp and lobster sauce. It's the old Cantonese style that one would find in HK. It's almost as good as my uncle's! The kung pao chicken is also another favorite of mine. Right between 3-4 stars for me. The name of this restaurant describes exactly what you're getting -- which is very authentic Chinatown style cooking in the suburbs. Personally, traditional Cantonese style cooking is a bit oily for me -- but there are many people who have grown up with and enjoy these types of flavors. Prices and portion size are about what you'd expect to find in the suburbs and parking is a bit limited. Here's some quick thoughts on different items: Garlic stir fried peapod: Full of garlic flavor and a bit oily, but very authentic Chinatown flavor here. This is really snow pea leaves or pea shoots, but mislabeled a bit. Stewed beef noodle soup: Once again, very similar flavor to what you'd find at seven treasures in Old Chinatown and nicer than most versions of this in the suburbs. Rice: Like most other Chinese restaurants, this is probably the same rice used for fried rice, so it's a bit on the dry side. Salted fish steamed ground pork: An alright dish. Pork lacks the distinctive "bouncy" texture. Sweet and sour fish filet: A bit lighter preparation without a heavy batter or distinct starchiness. Presented nicely with tomatoes, pineapples, and peppers. Lechon kawa li: Nice fried pork belly with skin. Would've preferred more herbs and spices on this to give it a bit of a boost in flavor. Overall, a nice way to get Chinatown flavors if you live in the area. But, not really worth a special visit if you live far away and if you're visiting from further away, I'd just take the extra effort to go into Chinatown itself. read more

Not too happy. I ordered 4 lobsters yesterday for a party. 2 of them were live and fresh but the other two tasted like frozen lobsters. They charged $40 market price. We came back for a local family meal here on a Saturday and avoided a downtown commute and the traffic mess in Chicago this weekend (down to one lane for construction on the I-90/94 Ryan and Kennedy downtown - uuugh!). You can get a great value on the family dinners here in a no-frills Cantonese setting. Tonight it was an 8 course dinner for six for $95.95 pre-tax and tip. Coming back from Golf Mill the other night, my family wanted Chinese...and sadly, my husband doesn't like my favorite Chinese place. So we passed Chinatown and remembering that my fellow Elite friends Vikki and Effie both like it, I suggested we try it. We all went in, perused the menu, my husband asked several questions, and we finally decided what to order for carry out. Betty, the lady at the counter, was very nice and helpful. My husband ordered a beer while we waited, I had tea, and our daughter had a bubble tea. While I do agree that the inside of the restaurant can use some updating, we enjoyed watching the servers bring food out. It looked like a lot of seafood choices and the fried chicken smelled heavenly! After a short wait, we had our order, which was reasonably priced for what we got, and we were on our way home. Our daughter tore into the eggrolls in the car, giving us each one, and we were all impressed! They were crisp, hot, and delicious!! Off to a good start! We were encouraged and couldn't wait to get home! I must say that there is only ONE place in the area that has shrimp egg foo yeung that I actually like, but Betty recommended this dish here, and I decided to give it a try. (She even said that if I didn't like it, to call her!) Not only was it good, but I can honestly say that it was BETTER than at my usual place! A small order had two large patties, and as usual I could only eat one, but it was delicious! They were generous with the shrimp, which were a decent size, the bean sprouts were crisp, and the sauce was so tasty and made the dish. The only comment I would make is that I would ask for more sauce next time. My husband had the Hunan beef, which is spicy with vegetables, and it was good too, with good flavor and the right amount of beef versus vegetables, in a savory sauce. We both like spicy, and this heat was perfect. A nice kick, but not too hot. Our daughter was able to eat it and she liked it also. I would order this again. We also ordered a side of the combination fried rice to share and we all thought it was good, too! It was moist, unlike some fried rice at other places that is dry. Where my husband is from in Kansas City, Chinese restaurants will substitute steamed rice for fried rice, but we haven't found a place here that does that. We didn't mind paying for the extra order because it was good! Unlike some places where it's just ok... Finally our daughter, who will eat noodles from anywhere, said the beef lo mein she had was the best ever! We both tried it and the noodles did indeed taste fresh and flavorful.
