This place changed since the last time I've been here. The service was fast, but some of the meal fell short. It started out good with the wonton soup. The broth was seasoned well and the wontons were good. The potstickers were good as well and had a good sauce. The bbq ribs had a good sauce as well, but the meat was dried out. For my entrees, I got Mongolian trio, kung pao trio, and the hong kong kow. The Mongolian trio was decent. It did have a good sauce, but it wasn't very spicy. The kung pao trio had absolutely no spice to it whatsoever. It was lacking flavor and wasn't very good. The hong kong kow had a good sauce as well, but another problem was that all the entrees I got skimped on the meat. This place is not as good as it was in the past, plus there are better places for Chinese that are closer to my area. read more

We came on a night wehn there was a communion party and it was jam packed and a bit sloppy...dare I say dirty? But the food was still just as I remember it. I never had a problem with it being too greasy, I thought it was better than most. We usually have mongolian beef and hot & sour soup, chicken almond ding, boring stuff. But tasty! The egg rolls are pretty good, and they put chopped ginger in the sweet and sour sauce. If I'm in Skokie visiting the mom, we go here for dinner. I've never tried the pancit guisado, though I have been yearning for it for nearly 25 years, when someone's aunt made it for a potluck in the art dept at Niles West. I think I'll have to try it. We love the giant carp in the fish tank, fun to watch...I keep thinking "gefilte fish" every time we see them. China Chef was the very first restaurant I've dined in when I was literally, in it's truest sense...a FOB...like 3hours off the plane...so I guess FOP..:) That was some 20+/- years ago. China Chef became a regular go-to place for me...it was near home and became so familiar so I guess that's the reason why I never raved about China Chef then. Until I moved to Cali, it's when each time I visit Chicago that I developed this craving coming back to China Chef. Today was one of those glorious days that I'm back here, fitting in my hectic schedule trying to meet everyone I needed to see...FAMILY DINNER! I was secretly wishing it would be at China Chef, until I got my prayers answered when my aunt told me it is in fact China Chef...the place to be!! I was so happy!! We got in and I see the same staff serving...felt like old times. China Chef already have a set-up menu for family meal and this is what we ordered: Special No.1 for 8 to 10 Ho Do Tai Soup- served in a huge bowl but served by your server in your individual cups...service deluxe!! This is the most delicious Ho Do Tai i've tasted! Fried crispy chicken(whole)- was juicy and I always pair it with their special sweet and sour sauce in their very own dispenser...sweet and tangy, not spicy!! My fave!! Fried chicken skin-- hmm did I miss this one from our table? Fried calamari ring- not salty...subtle flavor Pancit guisado-- is the noodle where you can lose the noodle from all the trimmings-veggies, sauce and meat...delicious! Crab w/ Lobster Sauce...superb!! Steamed whole fish...yummy!! Mongolian beef-- has subtle taste of salt, sweet, sour and spicy nestled in it's crunchy ricesticks I'm not a fan of the food below, so I won't be able to tell you how these tasted not until tomorrow from my to-go box..:) Sweet & sour pork.. Our favorite Chinese restaurant, but it failed us tonight. Our two entrees came out over 10 minutes apart! The appetizer came out AFTER the 2nd entree!! Manager went to kitchen to check on things, however there was no follow up with us and NO compensation on the bill, the VERY least I would expect for that type of service! I usually go to China Chef with my co workers for lunch but today i decided to pop over for a quick dinner because i was short on time. They did not disappoint. I ordered the chicken lo mein and added on the complete meal for an addtional $5.95. That gets you a soup, egg roll, and 1 egg foo young patty. Not a bad deal at all. I always enjoy the complementary pot of tea. The wonton soup was a little salty but good. The egg rolls are a good size and do not disappoint. The lo mein was perfect and enough left to have lunch tomorrow. I highly recommend China Chef. They are quick and tasty. Plenty of seating space for a large group also. Man, I was not even prepared for this. I just randomly happened to be in this area and hungry. The trusty old mobile informed me that there was a chinese place not far from where I was so I ventured a try. Really I was already wincing just hoping it wasn't some greasy soggy mess/buffet kind of thing. Food: The menu is pretty diverse and has a huge Filipino section (Filipino owned?). Next time I'll try some of the items on that list. Anyway, avoiding the tedium of scrutinizing every single item I had, suffice it to say that the food comes out fresh, well seasoned, and not oily. The pot stickers also come with vinegar instead of garlic soy sauce, and I dig the variety. The only flaw was that the egg drop soup was luke warm and a little too yolky. Service: Chinese Realism is the best word to describe it: nonchalant directness without any effusiveness. They substituted an item in one of the dishes with little hassle so they're fine by me. Ambiance: standard Chinese food decor - slightly on the cold side, big booths and vinyl everywhere. No complaints. I would definitely make a trip come back. read more

This was what my husband and I would call Gringo food- more geared to the American palate than authentic. Egg rolls tasted of peanut butter, the lumpia were sad, the egg drop soup had noodles in it and so much cornstarch the spoon would stand up in it. The Kung Pao shrimp was pretty tasty but not spicy at all and was half peanuts, the Egg Foo Yong was terribly overcooked and bland. Grew up with this being a former resident of Skokie. Filipino/Cantonese cuisine which gives you more options than your standard Chinese restaurant. I do enjoy their Chinese foods though. One of my mom's favorites is there steamed pike. Sadly last time we went there they ran out and we had it with flounder instead. Not exactly the same. We tried their duck and it was also just ok. Not a place I like to go, however my Mom likes is and I thought I could put up with it one more time. In a leftover we found a round piece of paper. I brought the dish back to show them. They blamed me because I had packed up the leftover and said I had picked up a wrapped from dim sum we had ordered (which was tasteless) and had put it in with leftovers. Skimpy portions, Ask for some homemade sweet and sour sauce after spending 30 bucks and they charge you .50 cents, complain about a dish and they have no idea about customer service, Julia is a rude, bathroom is gross and the whole place could be cleaner, food does not always taste the same and amount is not always the same size portions: IE was sitting next to an Asian family. We ordered the same item, and they had a huge serving while ours was almost half of what they got, they even skinp on the rice when you order a large or anything. I would love not to give them a poor review but its time they shape up or loose a life long customer. Great egg rolls but LOUSY dim sum. Xia Long Bao (soup dumplings) had almost no soup and were less tasty than frozen ones from the store. The price for dim was high. My family has been dining here for as long as I can remember. Whenever we have a family gathering (which is at least once a month), the extended family knows to expect combination fried rice, egg rolls, mongolian beef, and pansit guisado from China Chef. We recently dined in for a lunch party and not too much has changed, except the pansit guisado tastes...icky. I don't know what's changed about it but it's almost slimey. GROSS! The mongolian beef is tender and everyone loves it. The lumpia (Filipino eggrolls) are always a crowd pleaser but my fave dish is the combination fried rice. Maybe this was an off day but I was truly disappointed. Why is it hard to find a consistently good Chinese Restaurant on the North Shore. China Chef has been one of our go to restaurants since moving up to the North Shore over 10 years ago but this visit was not very pleasing. The Egg Rolls tasted spoiled. I took one bite and I new something was off but my husband ate half of his to finally realize that it was bad. Then the beef in the Beef and Broccoli didn't taste right. It had kind of a rancid taste to it. There was hardly any meat in the Combination Fried Rice which was a true let down. No flavor + lack of meat=Boo! Calamari...flavorless. At least, the Shrimp with Lobster was o.k. but by this time I was hungry and would have eaten it anyway..lol.. This review is only for food. Customer service was still pretty good. read more

The waiter we had was horrible and an ultimate magician who hid our $10 and overcharge it on our credit card. he thought we wouldn't notice and when we told him, he had the nerve to tell us don't argue! I have been going to China Chef since they were located on Harlem and Dempster. The food is still awesome, however, since ART passed away, the service and the cleanliness has gotten bad. Since moving to Deerfield, we simply pick up from there and never dine in. Like I said, the food is good, but the place and sevice has gone down hill. read more
