I have been a China Chef customer back to the days when Art Fong owned it and it was in its old location. Probably sometime in the 1980s. Suddenly it is going downhill. As if the owner decided to deal with inflation by cheating on ingredients instead of adjusting prices to match their costs. The most recent and egregious example was that they stopped filling the containers when you order Mongolian beef. A few weeks ago I ordered Mongolian beef and there was about 1-1/2 inches of air at the top. (Picture of Mongolian been exactly as it was when I opened it is shown. I figured it was an anomaly and didn't even complain. Today the same. So I took another picture, exactly as it looked when I opened it, this time next to the sesame chicken to illustrate the difference between a full and not-full container. These pictures were taken several weeks apart. So, this time I called. They connected me with a manager. I told him that I did not want anything kind of freebie or adjustment. I just wanted him to tell his kitchen not to send me with 1-1/2 inch of air at the top next time I ordered. Instead he decided I needed a lecture on how much they pay for beef, and follow up with condescending, snippy comments. If you're in the Morton Grove area and looking for really good Chinese food then look no further. The food is not your typical Chinese take out restaurant but more of a sit down and dine with your family or friends type of place. Everything is so good and tasty. There is a huge menu of items from appetizers, soups, veggie dishes, beef, chicken, and seafood. Came here on a Monday night with my whole family of 7 and we didn't have to wait long for our food at all. Their crispy fried chicken is nice and crispy for those of you that has a picky little eater like I do. I love the Happy Family dish that's a seafood combination plate that's placed on top of a pan fried noodle resembling the shape of a bird's nest. The service is fast and attentive. I've only ever gotten three items from this location: the sesame chicken (which is fine, even if it leans a bit too much towards sweet and away from savory), the veggie fried rice (which is also decent, with nice fried rice heavy in oil), and the crab meat wontons. Those are the best crab wontons/crab Rangoon I've ever had. They're large, light, fluffy, well-fried, and with a terrific volume and distribution of creamy filling. Chop suey joint or authentic Asian cuisine? The enormous menu spans both. The Missus and I enjoy the variety and, compared to years ago, the restaurant appears well maintained if dated and the food seems better overall. Our most recent visit was with friends who prefer Americanized Cantonese dishes (yawn). We ordered 'on the dinner' - egg roll, soup, and egg foo young included with our entrees. The apps/sides were as good as they get. Four of the entrees we shared - beef chop suey, subgum chicken chow mein, chicken almond ding, and "Young Chew Day and Night" (beef, shrimp & chicken with veggies and fried noodles) were bland and needed tech support from the soy sauce dispenser. But they were properly cooked and thankfully not drowned in gloppy, starchy sauces. Sweet-and-sour chicken was tastier than the other dishes (though a smidgen too sweet for my tastes,). Especially here, I find the authentic dishes to be more flavorful than the Americanized versions. The servers will gladly tell you what's spicy and what's not. read more

This restaurant never impressed me, and the service has always been mediocre at best. Recent visit was by far the worst. It was for about 60 people and everything from the hard dry rice to no flavor in the egg drop soup (as if it was watered down) to absolutely horrible service. Trying to get a pitcher of water was a huge task for them, and extra napkins... never received them. We had nine ladies at our luncheon on Wednesday, July 19. The service was fast and totally accurate,which often does not happen ,in a large group.the food was hot and delicious. It's incredibly difficult to find a delicious and authentic Chinese restaurant in the 'burbs that's comparable to those tiny Mom n Pop places in Chinatown. After trying the staples in the Northshore area, I'm happy to find that China Chef is my favorite for certain dishes in the area. Food: China Chef serves both Chinese and Filipino dishes. They recently started serving dim sum which is a Chinese breakfast which consists of "small eats"- bite-sized snacks. The standards are dumplings, shu mai (variation of Chinese dumpling), congee (rice porridge soup), steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed pork buns and other "steamed" delights. My all time favorite Chinese food in the US (next to Peking duck specifically from Beijing), would be "xiao long bao" (XLB) which are soup dumplings! They are amazing! The ones at China Chef are comparable to those in Chinatown. They are soupy, buttery and so delicious when drizzled with vinegar. I'm incredibly impressed with the taste of China Chef's XLB. Aside from that, we had a bunch of other dim sum classics which were decent. We did order the riblets which I found kind of greasy (not a big fan) so I don't recommend that. Ambiance: A little bit out-dated but it adds to the charm. It's very understated. You can tell they made some modern changes to the lights (very cute origami light shades) but the booths and tables seem have an authentic 90s feel. Service: Incredible. Our waitress was fantastic! She had our orders promptly on the table and made sure to check in on us. She made stellar recommendations and really knows her menu. The owners were actually there the day we went and came by to welcome us to their restaurant. Prices are amazing! Their lunch dishes are around six bucks and they even have coupons for carry out! Do I Recommend this place? It depends. I would say yes and no. Few dishes are good and most of the other dishes are not there quality wise. Service was a bit slow but I was being a bit patient today as I think our waiter has been here since 1977. We had pina coladas and mai tais which were really good and all the egg rolls, shrimp toast, and shrimp dumplings. All yummy. We had a lot of apps so we just shared some pork fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and chicken with veggies. I'd say try fried rice was the weakest dish and had absolutely no flavor with minimal pork or even egg in it, so I would not order that again. The other two dishes were good but standard.
