The other day I tried a longstanding Chinese food staple in Leominster. I did not enjoy it at all…read more I decided to try this place but I'm keeping my expectations extremely low to avoid being upset. This place is located smack dab in the very busy intersection of Main Street and Prospect street which is right next to Main Street + Nashua Street + Hamilton Street intersection. It gets really busy and I don't enjoy driving here. If you make it to the lot, it's large and spacious and you should have zero problems finding a spot. The interior is minimal, similar to other Chinese food joints that are mostly meant for takeout. If you do opt to eat in, there are 3 sets of booth tables available along with several seats set to the side if you really want to push the capacity and have someone sit at the open face of the table. I made a large order here and had my fingers crossed that at least half of it would taste ok. Pu Pu Platter(2) ; this is a lot of food. But it's also $31. Worth it? Egg rolls, chicken fingers, chicken wings, beef teriyaki skewers, fried shrimp, and boneless spareribs. I found all of the food unremarkable. I don't mean that as a dig or a complaint - it literally tastes so similar to many places, especially like China Wonder in Fitchburg. Peking Garden definitely has the win on Crab Rangoons, but China Wonder wins on Beef Teriyaki. Some people told me the boneless spare ribs were amazing, but I didn't have that reaction. Overall, an adequate choice. Coconut Shrimp ; I am a fiend for coconut shrimp and it's funny that every place does it very differently. This one has coconut shavings on top and a very thin sauce almost like they just poured in coconut milk and called it a day. The taste is.. tolerable, but man the batter on the shrimp was NOT it. Thickly coated and the inner batter contacting the shrimp was not cooked all the way. Unpleasant texture from the batter and bizarre taste from the sauce; I scraped off all of the batter after a few pieces and just forced myself to finish the dish. Not recommended. Crispy Orange Chicken ; this was the only standout of my order. the batter on the chicken actually managed to be a little crispy which is rare for this dish genre. the taste was on point - sauce was not nauseatingly sweet or overpowering, and nothing was annoyingly soggy. this dish is definitely worth trying if you're craving for a typical General Gao's/Tso/orange chicken dish. Man, I am 0 for 3 with Leominster Chinese food. I think I will keep my money in Fitchburg since China Wonder and Gold Bowl have never done me dirty like this.

Reviews here don't respect the food here, but I think a) it's definitely nowhere near elite, b) it's gotten somewhat of a bad rap, and c) it seems to be improving. Much of it depends on what you order and whether it's from the buffet. -- Sunday Buffet: The number of stations has dwindled from 3 to 2 (plus a dessert area), but that actually helps with the turnover, which is critical for a buffet. Many of the items are either bland or have been sitting a while, but I can always find 2 or 3 items that still make it worth it. And at $20.95 for both quantity and variety, a very good value. -- Hot and Sour Soup: Thick but not gloppy, and a very pleasant mouthfeel and spiciness. -- Lobster Sauce: More great mouthfeel, plenty of gentleness and flavor, but much of that flavor is salt. -- Pork Fried Rice: Had on both combos and the buffet. Medium color, minimum flavor. -- Egg Rolls: Tried on the buffet and on combo plates. They're extra crisp, but still delicate and bendy, with a filling of mostly cabbage that's both crisp and moist. Pork and five spice flavor is very pronounced and very delicious. Even though I prefer a celery-based egg roll, this one is elite, bettering probably 80% of the celery versions out there. These are hand-made, not industrial. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken: The crisp fingers might be industrial. Not much meat or batter flavor, but the thin sauce has plenty, including a very sour component that outshines the sweet. That sauce is thinner than most, so while you lose the cling, you avoid a chemical tasting glop. Overall, good. Pro tip when having via the buffet: grab some pineapple chunks from the dessert station. -- Chicken Wings; From the buffet, these certainly look industrial (Weaver or Swanson), but they're actually pretty good if you settle into accepting that they're breaded and not the 5-spice-and-ginger kind. I'm on the fence. -- Peking Ravioli: Tried on the buffet. The Fireball-sized sausage in the center has some nice flavor, but the wrapper is too thick, stiff, and starchy for my liking. -- Teriyaki: Beef version tried on a combo, steaky but dry. Definitely needed the duck sauce for both moisture and flavor. Chicken teriyaki from the buffet was actually fresher and slightly juicy. -- Boneless Ribs: Thin, glazed with both red and clear, but ultimately a dry and needing the duck sauce. Some light char added a flavor dimension. -- Shrimp Fried Rice: Ordered as part of a combo, this arrived as a large pile, with fresh grains, not the darkest, but not lacking flavor. And definitely not lacking shrimp. I took a chance and this paid off hugely. Some good, some not so good, and some very good. Not enough good to get the 4, but no way is this a below-3 joint.

These are pretty good and basically exactly what you expect when you order these. General Tso's Chicken ; this one is a mixed bag. The sauce is quite thin and idk, doesn't have much flavor. It does surprisingly have a lot of heat. The batter on the chicken is not crispy, but most places fail to meet that bar anyway. It didn't get soggy and it's not obnoxiously thick and doughy. The quality of the chicken leaves a lot to be desired. Some pieces are like perfect Chic Fil A nuggets. Other long twisty pieces are tough and have unpleasant mouth feel. A lot of other pieces are just too dry. The flavor just isn't there, it's physically unenjoyable to eat and I don't want to finish eating this. Beef w/ Broccoli ; I think this dish is fine. I do not regularly get this dish so I don't have a benchmark for it. The broccoli is nicely tender. Some of them even have the perfect snap to them. None of them approach sogginess. The beef has been velveted correctly - super tender and no bizarre aftertaste. I just don't think the flavor profile of this dish in a general sense is for me. House Special Fried Rice ; small, onions yes, subgum style yes. Not sure how to rate this. It has everything and it's totally packed with all of vegetables and meats. It just doesn't have that extra oomph that fried rice should have to make me crave it. The rice is very much an off-white color and not golden brown, so visually it makes be believe the rice is far less flavorful than other places with golden-to-brown rice. I'm not really satisfied with the food and I know I would've had better results ordering from other places I'm more familiar with.

Sweet and Sour Chicken: Average size, average batter, but crisp and well-above-average meat-to-batter ratio. None of the typical separation of chicken from shell. This last part was a noticeable step up from previous visits, where the fingers have always been good, but not this good. Maybe I'm cursed with being too hard to please or cursed with a good memory of how many dozens if not hundreds of times I've been blessed by superbly darkened and flavored rice in the past. Egg Roll: Another item that's always been good, but today, very good. Warm, crisp, and a moist and crunchy blend of cabbage and celery, with some dots of pink. Well above average, this time flirting with near-elite. Lobster Sauce: I've had mixed experiences at Singapore with this dish, which has always been at least good but has varied in darkness, saltiness, and gloppiness. This time, as a whole order rather than on a combo, it came in with more whole black beans than typical, good black bean flavor, zero saltiness, zero glop, and more of a chestnut brown color than darkest near-black brown. A pretty good compromise; it's like they knew how far to ramp up the flavor and then stopped before it got out of hand, as can happen when lobster sauce starts looking like WD40. Near-elite. Very strong showing that's the best overall visit I've had there. I'm not sure how repeatable it is, but I plan to find out soon.

The prices were average to above average; of course, it increases as the years go by due to inflation. Parking was always plentiful. On this most recent visit, we dined in with about 10 of us. Our server was funny, quick, and attentive. I also had a side of crab rangoons and a single size of a scorpion bowl. Everything was excellent except for the beef teriyaki on a stick, it was unusually tough. Other than that, overall, the food and service was good.
