Looking at previous reviews the food wasn't all bad . The carving station was not well maintained and the food looked old and extremely dry. Sushi station was good. All other food was freshly prepared and was hot. Salt and pepper shrimp was good, nice crunch and it didn't have a head on it like other buffets. Beef and broccoli was nice. My favorite dish was the buffalo chicken skewers. But all the other food was good. Place was clean and had low music. Now for the funny part, the lady who sat us brought out our drinks but never came back to check up on us (refills, empty plate pick up or extra napkins) when I ask for the bill that's when she came. I went to go pay and the cashier got bothered when she asked me "I should leave a tip and the amount is on the bottom of the receipt. I laughed and asked her you serious. I am not a connoisseur of Chinese buffets, but I do like Chinese food as it is presented in my neck of the woods. We try not to eat at chains and prefer Chinese restaurants run by actual Chinese staff. This place visually seems to meet the criteria, but the food I tried was either too fatty, void of flavor and just tasted...yes tasted like something. Decided to try China City for lunch today and what a disappointing experience. There are so many choices, yet nothing we tried tasted good or had any flavor at all. The pork dumplings were raw in the middle, and the pot stickers were so tuff you could barley cut them in half with your knife. None of the chicken, honey, orange, pineapple, or teriyaki had any flavor. The crab salad tasted like straight vinegar. The soads tasted like club soda and the fortune cookies were smashed. Our waitress said she would let her manager know, and when the manager came over and restarted to express our disappointment she started talking in Chinese to another waitress and walked off before we finished our sentence. I had lunch today at China City and this was the worse I have had in the East Valley. The food was horrible and obviously left over from last night or before and reheated. Each dish I tried tasted sour and old. So, now 5 hours later I am experiencing stomach issues. I always try and give a restaurant a pass if the first pass was not good, but this along with the nasty hostess, who fortunately was not present today has resulted in me or anyone I know ever going to this "restaurant" again. I say this because the quality of the food is just 1 step above unconsumable and should really be inspected, the high price for low quality food and the nasty hostess that is usually present does not support the price of the "buffet", the good thing there are so many other choices, that provide a quality buffet experience without the high possibility of getting sick from the food and the nastiness of the hostess. Updating my review. We loved coming here before and came for years! We are not coming back anymore. I always got the salt and pepper shrimp. It was my favorite. They changed and now serve this and all shrimp with the shell on. You now have to peel the shrimp, this is removing any seasoning as well making the shrimp completely taste different. Stopped in for lunch & to our dismay the food was all old (yesterday's leftovers). Rubbery chicken sticks, the beef & broccoli was eh, the beef was tough. Despite some of the reviews, my wife and I decided to eat there. It's a lovely place, looks clean and is well-lit. We were shown to a table by a very attentive waitress! It had glorious serving counters, all with their own utensil. I have to say that EVERYTHING was of proper warmth, unlike several complaints! I love sushi but usually can't afford it. Well, they had a sushi section with many many choices. I ate all the uncooked salmon and tuna sashimi I could eat! and It was glorious. Many sliced sushi rolls were also available. and the appropriate sauces were there for your enjoyment! Just prior to this sushi visit I stopped at their soups, three different available and I chose the hot and sour soup, filled my bowl 3/4 of the way, then went to several shrimp dishes and scooped out 7 or eight medium shrimp which I placed in my soup!. The soup was nicely spicy, hot, and sour. Just the way I like it! We ate egg rolls with the soup, nice and crunchy. There were well over 100 dishes available to choose from! This included roast beef, pork ribs, salads, sweet desserts, ice cream served from a soft freeze machine, vanilla, and chocolate! If you like Chinese food, you will be in heaven with so many tasty choices. I requested some sushi rice and they gave me a full cup! I had many slices of fresh juicy oranges between my plates. We had iced tea with the meal and they never let it run down, very attentive were our wait staff. When we could eat no more we decided to leave, and that was at least 2 hours! At $15 a person, it was ridiculous! I chatted some with the table next to us, a lovely young woman and two older men. What happened when we were about to leave was a first for me! Our waitress came to our table and told us "the table next to you paid for your meal"! They had just left and I was not able to thank them. My parents, son, and I visited a couple weeks ago. It's quite a large buffet with a lot of options. It was clean. Staff was friendly and quick to refill drinks. But...some of the items were not it on the buffet for too long and were dry or just looked old. I'd go back to try lunch instead of dinner. The food is so flavorless. It feels like that staff don't want to interact with the customers. The plates were dirty! The place was really empty so I got seated immediately which was nice, but before I even had the chance to sit down the waitress in a very rushed tone asked me what I wanted to drink. I hadn't even sat down, didn't even give me a second to look at the drink menu. While eating I saw a man try to get the attention of one of the staff and the lady was so short worded him. The staff just doesn't seem very enthusiastic to help customers? The food lacks flavor. It's so bland. Everything I had was bland or had a hit of nail polish aftertaste?? The front is clean. The booth was clean but the buffet area was dirty! The very first plate I touched, the bottom had bits of food still! Then when I went to grab a second the top also had bits of food still on it! The food is great. Their staff is rude though. We are already being asked what were going to want to drink before we even sat down. Went for lunch last week. The place is clean, including the restrooms. Food selection and quality were average for a Chinese buffet. I did enjoy the Mongolian BBQ included in the $12.99 lunch price. I thought it was above average compared to the other (2) Mesa Chinese Buffets I've tried. My wife did not care for the salad selections and thought the dessert bar was below par when compared to other Chinese buffets in the area. This was my 3rd visit. It was 1:15pm I found the restaurant to be clean. There was approximately 25% occupied. Due to the small customer count most of the food was drying out. This is the first time I've not been pleased by the offerings. The grill was a welcome change. The cook did a good job preparing my selections. I will be back but at the height of the lunch rush. The food is horrible. It all tastes like oil. Everything. Your mouth will be COATED in oil, a taste you can't get rid of for a while. All the food is sub par. I've tried it several times and it's always the same. The second time I went, my drink had a fortune cookie wrapper under the ice, as if it wasn't cleaned properly before. And the server started looking around the table and counting the fortune cookie wrappers on our table to see if I put it in my glass myself.. This is now my go to Chinese Buffet in the area I live of only 3 different places available. The rating on this is based somewhat on that fact, not of all I have tried. I have been during lunch and dinner many times. One thing I can certainly say is they have a fairly large variety of items. Sushi is always fresh and a decent selection. I usually see the person making it each time I go. In seafood/fresh water critters, the peel and eat chilled shrimp are perfectly cooked every time, the mussels in their sweet chili broth is perfect (I have found several here and there where the mussel wasn't debearded) the baby octopus is also perfectly cooked. Coconut shrimp yum, seafood medley has tons of variety and is decent. The crawfish are exactly what you find anywhere else, usually overcooked no spices. Not surprising, I have yet to find anyone/place outside of Louisiana which even comes close to decent. The breaded frog legs used to have heavy pepper and spices on them and were the best I have ever had. They changed the outside to not much spices or pepper. Still very moist and good though. The crab legs are Not pre-cut thank heavens. I hate it when restaurants do this because it water logs the meat. Learn to use a freaking shell cracker people... The breaded butterfly shrimp are very good. Salt and pepper shrimp usually cooked perfect sometimes over cooked and mushy inside the shell. Stuffed crab is OK. The cocktail sauce is ohhh so good. It isn't bitter or sweet, but is on the spicy side due to the horseradish. If they bottled it I would buy it I a heartbeat. The beef roast they have is decent. The problem is the knife they put out to cut the roast is as dull as a butter knife. Recommendation: Put a sharper knife out or at least a carving fork to hold it in place. They serve spring rolls, but no egg rolls. I absolutely love egg rolls. I wish they would carry both like another place I visit does. The Mongolian grill is decent on what they offer, the sauces need to be more flavorful. I wish they would add as an option minced ginger, hot oil. It is often grilled on the too well side. Most of the other entree dishes are average in flavor. Pepper chicken pretty good. Teriyaki chicken sticks very good, crab Rangoon decent, if they were sweeter they would be better. Chicken wings/drumstick good. The vegetables lo mein and Mei Fun noodles are hit and miss on tasting good. The fried rice is pretty decent. The hot and sour soup needs a little more spice to it. Egg drop soup is good. The desert bar area is the usual. Coconut macaroons always on the dry side, the banana pudding and wafers could use banana pudding instead of vanilla it would drastically increase the quality. Tapioca pudding is on the very bland side, recommend to upgrade the quality of the mix for the yogurt machine. The honey coated wonton need much sweeter honey, more sesame on them. The flan is bleh. I have never received sub-par service on any of the many many occasions I have gone. I feel often people set extremely high expectations on many restaurant waiters. Don't be afraid to raise your freaking hand if you want water faster, or more napkins or a bee fork that may have fallen. People aren't mind readers... and it is a freaking buffet. I always ask for a pitcher of water every time so I don't need to wait. I do this anywhere I go. Recommendation to owners: Things I wouldn't mind seeing added to the buffet, peanut chicken in peanut oil, for Mongolian grill - skewered shrimp with some crawfish spices on it. It's an all you can eat Chinese restaurant. Nothing special. I usually go to allow a meal without much argument about who wants what. Today I got questioned for my tip. I typically leave cash and zero out the receipt. The waitress asked why I didn't leave a tip and I told her I leave cash. When leaving she asked very loudly why I don't tip.
