We came for a pre-concert meal because of its location across from the Toyota Center and limited time we had. They have a reduced menu for these type situations to speed up decisions and delivery of the food. To keep things positive, the Mongolian beef $18) was definitely tasty, and followed the typical American style of being a bit too sweet. The dish came with brown rice and an egg roll, which my sister liked. Although the menu states there is a $2 sharing fee, a busboy gave us an extra plate and we were not charged for sharing. The biggest problem we had with the dish was the fact we had ordered the beef with broccoli to avoid the rice. Because of our rush and the overworked servers, we just kept the mistake and made do. We also ordered a vegetable soup which was very flavorful and their "cheese puffs" (what most Chinese restaurants label as crab rangoons). They were definitely cheesy and deep fried, two things we would normally avoid but time dictated we get something we thought wouldn't take too much time to get served. Yelp asked "is this place romantic?" We had a good laugh that in this totally full restaurant a single 60s-ish man sat eating while watching a World War II movie at full volume, totally oblivious to his surroundings. While annoying, most patrons just looked at each other with a WTF expression. If everyone wasn't it such a rush to begin with, we might have minded more. We'll say 4 stars for the taste and staff hustle, 2 stars for the ambiance. Overall, an adequate experience but the location is everything. read more

Always enjoy coming here. It's an older place with decor from the 80s but don't let the old fool you, beautiful table designs and furniture is very sturdy and comfortable. Food is great. I had the unfortunate experience today of calling China Garden and try to make a booking for a party of 40 people on February next year, I work for a well known events company, and to start the hostess does not now anything about the restaurant she´s working in, and secondly even without been able to start speaking the manager Sussy just told me she didn´t take reservation that far in advance, I requested to have an e-mail address to send her the proper information of the event we were holding, and she plainly said that she was not interested in working with me. The homemade egg rolls are pretty good. They're nice and big with lots of flavor. I'm not a big fan of the other dishes here. I may try the Egg Foo Young dish, but the price for egg foo young to me is a bit high for this dish! I'm more into Sichuan style Chinese cooking now. read more

Pretty decent Chinese restaurant! Tried their lemon chicken, which was pretty good but it's just flat chicken glazed in their sweet lemony sauce. It would be better if they added vegetables like bok choi or something. But the chicken itself was good. Also tried their beef chow mein which was good too. It looks like their quality is fresher than most Chinese restaurants. But it comes at a higher price.. And quantity is smaller, compared to like kim son across the street. The food is fantastic especially their number one item which is Lemon Chicken. They have hands down the best Egg Rolls in Houston and the best wonton soup. The service is great and the staff is so nice and accommodating. I highly recommend China Garden for a very enjoyable adventure. read more

This staple of Houston has been here for over 40 years, and really, they haven't changed a thing! It's retro traditional seating is fun, especially with a group! Of course the main reason to go, is their food, which is authentically Chinese dishes. I loved the Lemon Chicken, and Kung Pao Chicken. You must get their egg rolls, which are as good as it gets! This is a family operated establishment, and they are passionate about taking great care of serving expertly prepared, efficient portions, which are perfect for sharing. I am not a picky eater, and very seldom complain about the restaurant food. But I was very disappointed what we had here. We had Kung Pao chicken, mix vegetable s and a cup of hot sour soup and nothing was good. These are not Chinese food but the ingredients stirred with heavy starchy soy sauce. Had a wonderful dinner at China Garden last night 6/8/24 and as always the food was impeccable. We've been going to China Garden since the 70's when I was working for Tenneco downtown. Enjoyed talking to Carol as always and reminiscing about her sweet Mom. It's the best Chinese food in Houston, love the egg rolls, lemon chicken and kung pao chicken. This restaurant seems to have a lot of fans and I did see several repeat customers that had a very friendly repertoire with the workers the day I went. I had the spicy chicken, very different flavor profile, not similar to general tso in my opinion. I also had an egg roll and it was delicious, I would go back just for those. It is an older building and could use some upgrading, however I don't think this takes away from the food itself. This is our to go restaurant anytime we go to a show at Toyota center. They have a special menu just for events and games, so you can get in and out fast. We decided tonight to have fried wontons, yes it has meat inside, egg rolls and their pork steamed dumplings. The steamed dumplings looked just like the ones you get in wonton soup. So very good! The egg rolls are huge and full of cabbage and other yummy vegetables. We have tried most everything on the menu and we have had nothing but great food. They also give you enough to share. You get in and out so quickly. The staff is always nice and welcoming. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. read more

For the amount we paid it wasn't worth it unfortunately. The place was old, and not just old but in need or repair old, the ambiance was giving 1980's no windows so it was drank with bad lighten. The food was bland and didn't seem fresh at all. When my mom asked out server for a wine menu and she gave her a crumbled stained menu with prices scratched out. I stopped by this location while attending an event at the Hilton of the Americas. I've driven by it plenty of times before/after Rockets and Aeros games, but never actually made an attempt to go until now. The place was only about 1/3 full on a night before a concert at Toyota Center and an Astros game at Minute Maid Park. They had a limited menu due to the events, which made sense but was a bit disappointing because nothing on their website indicated that they did that. Prices were surprisingly high for dinner entrees, but I guess that goes with the territory being in prime a downtown location. All of the entrees came with fried or steamed rice and an egg roll. Our waiter never asked us which rice we preferred, he just brought out fried rice. That worked better for me, but not for my dining companion. Service was very inconsistent. We were generally ignored at first, then after the waiter took our order (everything at once), things came out surprisingly fast. I barely had time to add sugar to my ice tea before the cheese wontons and egg rolls came out, and we'd barely tucked into those when our entrees hit the table. There was a guy coming by to refill drinks, but after one refill he disappeared and we never saw him again. The waiter came by abruptly to deliver the check without seeing if we needed anything more. He seemed annoyed when we told him we needed to split the bill and kind of tossed the separated checks at us when he came back. I ordered the "Spicy Chicken (General Tao)". It wasn't spicy at all, but rather savory with a hint of sweet like the typical General Tso's chicken you get elsewhere. I added some of their mustard/horseradish sauce to get more of a spicy flavor. That really clears out your sinuses. The portions were decent, but I probably wouldn't come back here unless I was heading to an event and it was the most convenient location to go to. The poor service and good-but-not-great quality really isn't worth the price here. read more

I ordered a special fried rice, lo mein, and sweet and sour chicken. 70 dollars and the portions were smaller than the lunch special! I tried three lunch special dishes: General Tso's chicken; lo mein, and Mongolian beef. The General Tso's chicken was by far the best of the three. The food was okay. I had a serious craving for Chinese takeout and China Garden was a fine solution. It was close enough to my hotel to walk, which was great. I think the reviews are a bit generous for the food taste. I'd recommend sticking to the General Tso's chicken (or the sweet and sour chicken is probably pretty good). Egg rolls were very good. The restaurant staff, however, were so friendly and welcoming. I'd come back just for the excellent service. If you're in the area and craving Chinese food, China Garden is a solid choice. read more
