Unfortunately there has been a shift with China Garden, that is very noticeable. When I first moved to this area in 2014 China Garden was delicious! It seems the management changed and it was a very drastic change! The food lacked seasoning and was not the same China Garden that my family and I loved! It has been years now that I have been there. As I had a taste for Chinese food, I checked the reviews and it doesn't seem to have changed. I wished I did not have to go out of my neighborhood for Chinese food, yet that is the case. Basic Chinese place in Steger that's about par for the course. China Garden is a little place most people get carryout from. It doesn't get any better than here. For certain it's nothing that great but it's also not that bad. The worst thing is they often run out of things. After placing an order they said they were out of tofu so we had to change it. It would have been nice to know that before ordering. The item we were going to get was the Buddha's Delight, which was mixed vegetables and tofu. Couldn't get it without tofu, because that was the best part. Instead we got the Broccoli With Garlic Sauce. This item was a very basic thing. It's about $8 at lunch. That's when you have to go, because this isn't worth the dinner prices. Get here at lunch. It's cheaper prices. It's not a great sign when you get your food and it's so bland you wonder if you have covid. Portion size is good but the food is so lacking in flavor that having a lot of it isn't particularly exciting. Tried all three of the egg rolls (pork, shrimp, vegetable) and they all tasted pretty much exactly the same. The Mongolian beef is mostly onions and a waste of money. The sweet and sour chicken was alright, pretty typical. The shrimp egg foo young was watery and extremely bland. I still stand by what I said in my earlier review about this place. This is one of my favorite Chinese places in the area. They are always consistent with what I get and quick about it too. An open kitchen is pretty cool too, that way you can see what they are doing. Earlier in the afternoon I went ahead and got their shrimp fried rice, beef chop suey (first time actually trying it!), BBQ pork appetizer, jumbo shrimp lo mein w/ Xtra shrimp. I want to say everything was delicious except for the beef chop suey. When I order out, I tend to try out foods I've never had before first. I usually stray away from foods that most everyone knows about, i.e chop suey. But I decided to add it to my order out list. One thing I noticed right away was that it was way too salty for me and there's not enough texture. All it was was just indiscernible slop, with the exception of a few sliced, crunchy carrots thrown in there. Nope. This one gets the cut big time. But in no way was it a deal breaker. The jumbo shrimp lo mein w/extra shrimp is my absolute favorite. I just love it. The noodles are not too drenched in sauce and the extra shrimp is a must have when ordering out this dish. The fleshy shrimp in between one's teeth really does wonders to the senses, let me tell you. You can never have too much shrimp. The shrimp fried rice was good. Just simply your standard fried rice fare in cheap Chinese takeout. The BBQ pork appetizer was very good. It was a slightly sweet and succulent tender pork. Wasn't tough to chew at all. Again, they are easy on the sauce; so you can actually taste and enjoy your food without worrying about the pool of sauce drowning your food. This one gets my vote. This may be a hole in the wall joint but never let looks fool you. My only wish is that they deliver. read more

As I mentioned in many of my reviews, we really don't live by any great chinese takeout. So when we have the chance, we try to get chinese food when we are traveling to family members. My in laws swear by this Chinese place. The JUMBO shrimp fried rice is legit, not greasy, full of flavor and plenty of large shrimp. I can order this as a meal and be one happy camper. Huz loves the shrimp and broccoli. Add the shrimp foo young to our order, and you have one very great Chinese seafood meal. I wouldn't suggest the chicken satay though. The chicken skewers are breaded and then fried, instead of grilled. The suace was peanutty but lacked some good Thai flavor. They also sell bubbie teas but I will save that for a hot summer day. read more

I just moved to the area and have been there twice to get disappointed over and over again. First time I ordered the Mongolian Beef just to get home and discover instead of green onions which is part of the dish was a box full of the roots of the green onions. I would have taken it back but was tired and did not feel like driving. Second time I get Broccoli and Beef to find the beef was tough to the point I could not chew it and the broccoli was hard as if it was under cook. I am an American white girl through and through who actually works at a very well taken care of Chinese food restaurant. I am not trying to promote so I will not mention the name of it. This Is actually the worst Chinese food I have ever had in my entire life. I should just walked out of the restaurant. The place was extremely dirty with dimmed and flickering lights which adds to the creepy factor. They use a very old fryer and rarely change the fryer grease. On to the food. I had the General Tso's chicken dinner. The fried chicken tasted of old fryer grease, not chicken, and way to crispy. The General Tso's sauce was to sticky and sour. The egg roll tasted of old pork. I haven't gotten carry out from this place for a few years as I found the food bland with a mushy texture, including the steak in my favorite dish, kung po beef. We received their menu in the mail and I saw many new items so we decided to give it a try. 100% better! The ingredients tasted and looked fresh. My husband loved the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and the fluffy beef egg foo young. The only criticism I have was that the kung po beef, a dish labeled as spicy, had no kick whatsoever. This is one of those small hole in the wall places that turn out good. I don't know about all the other dishes but if you love General sous chicken then this is your place. I eat this dish at every Chinese restaurant I go to and I have never had better than this place, in fact this is my benchmark for all the other places.
