The food was good. Some overly salty, but I think they continue to work on things. A small business that has been in the area for over 30 years. The original recipes from the owners nearly 30 years ago tasted different. Memory being what it is, nostalgia can dictate (as can change in ownership) BUT, They have recently added a Sushi bar and are improving the property. While the buffet part is hard for its own reason, as is the menu ordering side, they are now adding sushi. I feel they are spreading themselves too thin in trying to take on other "good qualities" from other local restaurants. Buffets a, sushi, hibachi next? I beg of you listening within China INN pay for a retain an actual GOOD SUSHI CHEF! Make sure to call to double check they are open, especially for lunch. Twice in the last month our group has walked up to find a handwritten sign saying they are closed. Food (and service) is hit or miss but seems to be better at lunchtime. When they are on their game, they have the best Chinese food in town. China Inn is a staple when I come back to Crawfordsville. My best friend and I used to dine-in about once a week at most. Why? We always went for the hot n sour soup! It has to be their best I've ever had. I now live on the east coast in Baltimore,MD where we have plenty of great sushi, soups, and other non-American foods. This establishment takes gold for their soups. The one thing that gives that restaurant a four star rating from me is that every time I visit, something seems to be going down hill, whether that be their furniture or the feeling of the restaurant being sanitary. Wow, I never expected to find a place like this in Crawfordsville. The food was amazing. We did a "two for" deal (I can't remember the exact name of it) and I had the Orange Chicken, which was stellar. My wife had another chicken dish that was also very, very good. The egg roll was above average, but not the best I've ever had. Our meal came with a side order of a couple of chicken wings that were very good also. That Crab Rangoon? Perhaps the best I've ever had. Great food, good service...although, there was a show going on in the bar, and the service slowed a little bit because of that. Still, a very positive experience. Great little place for Chinese food with live music! My friend and I came here on our way to Lafayette. We didn't think much of a small Chinese restaurant in a small town (I'm chinese), but it definitely exceeded my expectations! We got the firecracker shrimp and vegetables with chicken, and they were absolutely delicious. Sure they were American Chinese food and not necessarily authentic, but they still tasted really good. China Inn is the best place to get your Chinese fix in C'ville. I've not had the "hit or miss" experiences that others here have mentioned, so I can't really comment on that. Their General Tso's is excellent, as are the pepper steak and the garlic chicken. Their fried rice beats any of the buffet/take-out places in town, and the crab rangoon is to die for. It really blows any other crab rangoon that I've had out of the water. The sushi is what prompted this review, though. A friend and I decided to give China Inn's sushi a chance recently, and it was tasty. Sushi is available all day Thursday, and on Saturday evenings. They have a legit sushi bar, with the owner preparing food as it's ordered. Prices are fair, and the sushi selection seems more than adequate. I'm not a fan of raw fish, so I opted for the volcano roll and another one I can't remember the name of. My friend was thoroughly pleased with his sushi, as well. China Inn is a decent restaurant for lunch or dinner in downtown Crawfordsville. The portions are good sized and prices reasonable. When available, they offer delivery to the Crawfordsville area. On a few nights throughout the week they offer a good selection of sushi. If you dine in you can also sit at the sushi bar and watch them make your order. My kids love the beef lo mein and my wife and I get sushi rolls and the sushi bar salad which is very good. When we dine in we usually take advantage of the Asian beer and wine offerings on their menu. This is by far the best option for sushi in Crawfordsville and a decent choice for a Chinese restaurant overall. read more

Unfortunately, the food was almost too salty to eat, and the chicken was tough like pork (and in hindsight, it definitely was). If you're are appreciative of authentic Chinese food and culture, I suggest going places that utilize authentic ingredients, traditional methods, and spices. Although we only tried two entrees and an appetizer, the food tasted off. We found it to be generally overpriced, over salted, and unauthentic. Not to mention, there was a lot of coughing we could hear going on where the food was being prepared. This was an awesome American-Chinese restaurant. The servers were very attentive. The sushi was really yummy! We had appetizers of egg rolls, crab Rangoon, and cheese sticks. Also, the chicken fried rice, orange chicken, and sesame chicken. If you're looking for authentic Chinese you may not find it here but the food was still really great. I doubt they use MSG in any of their dishes. The atmosphere is nice sitting by the sushi bar next to the fish tank. We ate our leftovers at the hotel and they still tasted great. We're from Chicago so the food did taste different from what we're used to. I'd recommend this place if you're in the mood for healthy Chinese. They cook everything made to order and everything is fresh coming in from all their meets and fresh made to order sauces. read more

Honestly I knew I may have been on to something when the server brought over the yuck they call egg drop soup for my dining companion, while indicating my soup would need to be finished by hand. We love this place! I would never try sushi because I thought it looked gross ... I went up to visit some high school friends and we decided that we should go to China Inn and eat sushi!! Well I decided to trust Chris!! He has made me love sushi! He is awesome at his job, you can tell he takes a real pride in what he does it's not just a job to him.... There is times that he's busier than others and you may have to wait a little bit but we have never been disappointed with one of our trips over to eat... Her boyfriend joined and they tried the volcano that is a buffalo chicken roll and they both loved it after saying he wouldn't try it! When I began coming here it was great food, good prices and awesome service! In the last 3-4 months it seems to have let a great amount of things go to the way side. There is a "not right" taste to the food on the buffet. Maybe has been prepared too far in advance? Moo shoo pork is a favorite of mine, but my orders have continually gotten more mediocre. Loads of frozen carrots in different shapes, little to no sauce or taste. The egg drop soup is beyond insane. The amount of food dye in it is almost worrisome. Never have I experienced a color so vibrant, and the way it stains your skin, WOW! With some mustard or plum sauce this can be remedied and Hot and Sour ordered in place of the egg drop, however the egg rolls are now gross. Lots of dry ground beef and wilted cabbage. Like I said I have liked this place for ages, but the prices and quality in the last months has made it a place I avoid except for some sushi. P.S. the sushi is good for the location. Lunch specials are great, a lot of bang for you buck, but the service ESPECIALLY when it comes to sushi is RIDICULOUS! The last 3 times we have tried to eat sushi there it has ended poorly. I know good sushi will take a minute, but I also know it's not ok to do all the easy rolls first. If that's how you want to do it, throw the table a bone and send out the "easy ones" for the order in which they received. My family and I went in on Saturday and paid $100 to waste 2 hours and not receive one roll we ordered. When our waitress told Chris to cancel our order he was not remorseful at all or upset or apologetic for making us wait. At least 2 other tables received their food before us. It wasn't size because. We were a 6 top and one of the tables had a min of 10people. I would even give you time if we had ordered during a rush but we were one of 5 tables in at 530pm. Actually, our waitress told us it shouldn't be long and we came in at a good time because they run out of rice (yea that has been me another time). It's just frustrating because it could be an amazing place to eat, but not with the way it is managed or food is prepared. It's also frustrating because I know the owner at least lives local and I'd like to support people in small businesses, but I expect quality service and remorse/respect when you haven't started making my food 2 hours after I ordered it. I also think it's sad because I know I am not the only person who feels this way. When they change, I'd be happy to go back, but until then I'll be eating sushi in Indy or Laffy! read more

I chose to eat on location and had one of the worst customer service experiences since moving into crawfordsville. I originally wanted to try it at home and they are the only ones who advertise delivery. But to my dissapointment they do not deliver as advertised. I will never waste my time with this place again. Since there are no chinese delivery places in this town I will give all my business to beijing, only place that can make decent chinese in this town.
