No distinguishing flavors between the different meals (General Tso's chicken, chicken Lo mein or chicken fried rice). It was not bad , it just wasn't great. I ordered off of their website... the lady told me when I arrived that the website is wrong as far as prices go... the prices are now very high for the quality of food. My total was 50 dollars. I paid for a pu pu platter (12.75) and a 6piece crab Rangoon (5.45) The crab rangoons tasted like they had been sitting and were double fried. They was no filling in them hardly. The pu pu platter- only thing I have to say that was good was the teriyaki beef sticks. My shrimp tempura was not cooked all the way through, Still batter. I ordered as well, the orange chicken and general tso chicken and it had a weird taste to it. Nothing was flavored. And my husband got "fried rice" with his orange chicken and it was bland. I'm from San Francisco and have had some of the best Chinese food in the country...I have tried ALL the local Chinese restaurants and can truthfully say, this place is one of the top Chinese restaurants. Only minor issue, in my opinion, the Mongolian beef can use a little more flavor in the sauce. All the beef was tender and had a good taste. Pork (bbq pork) low mein was very good as well as the bbq (char siu) ribs..very tender and meaty..this is my go to in the Gainesville/Haymarket area. I'll preface this by saying nothing was innately wrong with my experience. The pluses and negatives balanced each other out, and my not so secret Chinese food snob kicked in on me. There will never be Chinese food comparable to back north for me, but this was subjectively OK. Pros: order came fast, hot, and packaged well. Meat in triple delight was not a questionable consistency - the shrimp were huge! The pork in the lo mein was high quality too, not the stringy little pieces. They were clearly chunks of bbq pork. Cons: the brown sauce and lo mein left a little to be desired on flavor. Now, toss some of your favorite sauce on it and it is fantastic. Better to add than wish you could deduct, but I was super pumped to see brown lo mein and not bland yellow noodles, and it was missing a certain sodium element I guess. DISCLAIMER: Yes Kevin, this place serves "Americanized Chinese," NOT true Chinese cuisine! :-) I got an order of food from here to go last week - an order of Hot and Sour Soup (with crunchy noodles), Spring Rolls (with a side of House Chinese Mustard), and Kung Pao Chicken (extra spicy). I placed my order from the car on my way home so that I could pick it up and head right home. It was about 7-8 or minutes after I ordered the food that I arrived - they guesstimated about 10 minutes while on the phone. I went to pay my bill with a credit card - and the guy charged me $31 for something that was only about $11! I pointed this out, he seemed confused, so a lady behind the counter took charge and refunded the transaction back to my credit card. Then another guy started to hand me a bag of someone else's food. Once again, the lady caught the error. I sure hope this is not the norm service-wise for this place. I will say that when I got the food home - it was pretty good. Soup was tasty, the Spring rolls were yummy - the Chinese mustard was potent! I was choking and experiencing that deep nasal headrush, a sure sign of some powerful mustard! Just the way I like it! Considering the price, this is definitely worth it. Their moo shi chicken (all white meat - ask for it) is the best I've ever had. The bottom line is the quality of the food and, if you want to sit down to eat, the service and atmosphere. China Inn is consistently good in both regards. I usually order take out, but I have eaten there with others a few times and found the atmosphere warm and comfortable and the service excellent. Regarding the food, China Inn's dishes are a cut above the rest in the Gainesville/Haymarket area. The Sha Cha Beef I ordered tonight was excellent. The portion was generous, the beef tender, the veggie ingredients awesome and the sauce outstanding. Regarding the service. I generally am able to pick up the order in 10 to 20 minutes, and if I'm told 10 minutes the order is ready when I arrive 10 minutes later, etc... The menu offers excellent dishes, appetizers and soups. The crab rangoon comes with plenty of the rangoon, which is rare with other restaurants. The usual Wonton, Egg drop and Hot & sour soups are offered, but they have some other soups that provide a great change of pace. Things cooked in oil, such as the donuts or wontons, are great; not soaked with oil that should have been changed a week ago as is the case with many other restaurants. If you like rice noodles, try the China Inn Rice Noodle dish, which has a mix of beef, chicken and seafood. Excellent! And if you like scallops, the scallop dishes use large, fresh, tender scallops. The shrimp dishes are great. The Szechuan String Beans are a tasty veggie alternative. I've had many of the dishes on the menu over several years and keep coming back, and I love to order from China Inn when entertaining because everyone is always happy. First time ordering from here using Uber Eats. Uber couldn't find a delivery driver, delaying the food for about an hour, so I expected it to arrive cold (no fault of China Inn). Not only did the staff wait over an hour past closing time for the driver to arrive, my food was still hot when it got here (I did offer to pick it up but they were going to wait for the driver). I have been to this restaurant twice now, once dining in, once for pick-up. It's neither a terrible restaurant, nor a good one. For me, the litmus test for americanized chinese food is the quality of the General Tso's Chicken, and the fried rice. Unfortunately, China Inn is uninspiring on both accounts. It may have been an off-day, but the general tso's was accompanied by such a strong smell of vinegar in the sauce as to take one's appetite away. I have come to expect less-than-quality chicken from most chinese restaurants, but on this occasion, it was hard to tell whether it was indeed chicken at all. The fried rice was stale, as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for several hours. That being said, you could do worse. We ate there last weekend, the food was ok. Not great, not bad. For appetizers we got an order of steamed meat dumplings and crab rangoon. The dumplings were rather small and the wrappers were very thick. They tasted fine. The rangoon was also very small, but the filling wasn't as sweet as some other places and my wife liked them. I guess we just felt a little ripped off, their prices were the same as every other place in town but the portions were under-sized. For entrees we got kung pao two kinds and general tso's bean curd. The kung pao decent, not great but not bad either. The bean curd was cooked perfectly to my wife's tastes but the sauce wasn't like any general tso's we've ever had, it had a hint of ketchup taste which was really wierd. read more
