I love small businesses and there is truly not a harder business then food service. But a great operator needs to know when to call it a day. China Inn is way past it's prime. Dark, dingy and dirty dining room should have been my clue. But, I thought "it might be great, so give it a chance" It wasn't. It was nasty. Mostly ended up in the trash. I'm certain when Kmart was located next door and before that awful Panda Express across the parking lot opened up, China Inn was at the top of their game. Nothing wrong with calling it a day. Since most Chinese restaurants are open on Christmas Day a friend and I decided to have Chinese food for lunch. My friend chose China Inn because she had been there bofore and knew the owners. When we arrived at 11:30 am the place was empty with the exception of a few people stopping by to pick up carry out orders. This is a family owned restaurant (Mother & Son). To say the place could use a makeover is an understatement. We were greeted by Riley and his mother. Both were extremely welcoming. Since we were the only customers there we received Riley & his mother's undivided attention. At times a little to much (hee hee). Our meal consisted of egg rolls, hot and sour soup, shrimp with lobster sauce, fried rice, sweet & sour chicken, tea, and fortune cookies. Everything we had was very good and plentiful. Dingy place from top to bottom, with food and sauces splattered on the walls next to the dining booths. Cardboard boxes lined up in the hallway to the restroom, waiting for bugs and mice... Sink in Ladies room was filthy and water handles non-functional; adjacent wall, towel holder and door also dirty. Food was freshly prepared by owner, served in take-out cartons for some reason with a plate for mixing veggies and rice, satisfactory. However, I would never go there again. read more

This family- run restaurant features well- made, delicious meals. Take some time to enjoy your visit or order for take out. The ambiance is dim, comfortable, relaxing. I go every time I have a personal event to celebrate or when I can take my friends. I've been visiting irregularly since 2008, and I have come to consider the family my friends. My daughter said she had been here before and was not very impressed. It must say I am not impressed with the inside of the place. Very dark and not kept up with. You would think they had plenty of time to clean and brighten the place before reopening. They do not wear gloves or masks much. That is not good but they have been locked up in the restaurant so I assume safe. I have to say it takes forever to get your order and they are very confused. But the older lady, grandma type, is friendly actually they are all friendly This would not be a place to go if yo-yo want up scale. No no scale here The food though is worth it. I had pork fried rice, great! We had orders of sweet sour port, fried chicken, egg drop all tasted great. Not a lot of vegetables but I think that made it better. *Update* For all the no-goods out there who trash this place because of a certain employee's behavior, let me say this: How would you like it if you had a disability and people treated you like the plague or refused to patronize your place just because of it? Should we stop giving our business to companies that employ people in wheelchairs? Or are legally blind? Or have ADD? The list goes on... Get over your shallow, uneducated, pathetic selves already. That said, on to the review. Panda Express is right across the parking lot, but why would you go there when you can pay about a dollar more at China Inn for better quality, more options, and personalized service? This is the best place to get Chinese in ABQ. The menu is diverse with Mandarin and Cantonese options. Service also can't be beat: I came in for the first time in September with my boyfriend and then came in again just this week with some other friends. Riley remembered me and my name and asked where my boyfriend was. Amy remembered me too. They also sent us home with extra rice to go with our leftovers. Although it sounds unappetizing, the Pu Pu platter is a fun appetizer to share with a group. It comes with egg rolls, Beef Cho Cho (beef kabobs), cha siu (Chinese pork), fried shrimp, chicken wings, chicken legs, and cream cheese won tons all on a hot plate. The friend sitting next to me and I enjoyed the cream cheese won tons best! I also liked my friend's Pineapple Almond Chicken and wish I had ordered that instead. Tangy and slightly sweet, with vegetables and pineapple. The pan-fried chow mein is also as solid as you can get here in ABQ. They use a different type of noodle than what is normally used to cook this style of chow mein, but I suspect is because there aren't any carriers that come out here to ABQ since the demand isn't very high. SO, DON'T EXPECT THE FOOD HERE TO BE THE SAME AS CHINESE FOOD AROUND THE COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY WITH HIGHER CHINESE POPULATIONS, DUE TO DIFFERENT SUPPLIER DEMANDS AND REGIONAL TASTES. It can be on the slow side if you dine in, but they take great care of you. Ming Dynasty is the best place in town to get dim sum. For everything else Chinese, come here! read more

The portions are enormous. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I ordered the fried shrimp & chicken wings combination plate & the chicken chow mein combination plate and an order of egg drop soup. The total came out to about $23. Both plates came with a generous portion of fried rice and an egg roll. The chow mein slso csme with a portion of sweet & sour pork. The egg rolls are some of the best I've ever had. The rest of the food was delicious too. I'm definitely planning to go back. read more

I've been going to this spot for years. My sister worked at Marshalls and had to chase off some jerk for hassling Riley, she's been loyal to them ever since. They customize your order any way you'd like it and although there are many reviews whining about the cleanliness of the place.. they always pass health inspections, and you'll never get bad food. Also, for the people that have absolutely zero empathy, Riley has had a long struggle and has had many surgeries to boot. He is extremely smart! And he has the best memory ever.. he just repeats things. Because he isn't as healthy and hasn't been as fortunate as they privileged princesses with the odassity to complain about a person with tumors in his skull, but i digress. I've been looking for a place with a menu similar to the Americanized Chinese food where I'm from. This place has been the closest so far. The service was great although it took them a bit to realize I had entered. I recommend they get a service bell on the door or desk. The only downside is that it's dark, dated and uninviting. But these "hole in the wall" type places have best food. I decided to give them a chance because it's god to support local. I lol be visiting again in the future. I just wish the lighting was better and it was more inviting. read more

TAKE OUT is the only way to order. If you are expecting American Asian cuisine you'll be disappointed. This is authentic home cooked Asian cuisine. The soups are medicine when you have a cold. My mushu pork was delicious (my pancakes were freshly made and the sauce was not the one you get at other places - it was so much better) and my daughter's orange chicken was outstanding - best orange sauce hands down. Yes, they start cooking when you get there, which makes for a bit of a wait. It's worth it. Be patient. This is a family that cooks for you like they do for themselves. Don't let the location or the size of the restaurant fool you, this is lean, delicious and authentic Chinese food. Amy and her husband along with now their adult children (I grew up with them as my parents frequent China Inn since I was four years old) take great pride in their cuisine and hospitality. This place takes care to use really fresh ingredients. I know good Cantonese food because I grew up on it and am from the San Francisco region where Cantonese food abounds. Their fish is really fresh as are their vegetables. The family that runs this restaurant is so friendly and generous. Riley is a very sweet and caring individual, with the type of computer memory attributed to many special needs people. His memory for names is astonishing! Amy is a most thoughtful, generous and caring person and always makes sure my daughter has enough to eat and sometimes sends her home with extra. Don't be fooled if there is an occasional lack of sit down diners in the restaurant. They do a constant and steady stream of take-out. The food is authentic, tasty, and always cooked to order. My wife and I both did not like it. I ordered the sweet and sour special. Not terrible. But I don't think I would order it again. The fried potstickers were good. The beef cho cho was really good. Chicken fried rice was tasty. So yeah. If you care to venture to this establishment, walk in with an open mind. And I wish you luck in your food choices. read more

This was an overall bad experience for me, but definitely not the worst American Chinese cuisine I had. The family running the business were working very hard and seemed nice, but telling me that my order would take 20 minutes and making me wait over an hour is extremely unfair. The food was bland and I honestly had to add a ton of chili oil to make the food taste of anything. The curry chicken was slimy and looked almost boiled. I also got the sweet and sour shrimp. It was fine I guess, it's just fried shrimp. The batter on the shrimp was pretty flavorless though and the sweet and sour tasted a little off to me. If you want good quality American Chinese and legit Chinese food, go to Chopstix on Lomas. I honestly only went to China Inn because every good Chinese restaurant in town is closed on Monday. This is really good home-style Chinese cooking. True, it doesn't have a lot of atmosphere, but that is the hallmark of a good Chinese restaurant (try Chinatown in any major city, you'll see what I mean). Portions are beyond generous and everything is cooked to order. I was staying overnight in Albuquerque and craved Chinese. Based on Yelp reviews, I tried this restaurant. They recommended Chow Shan Shein, which I have never had before, so I tried it. It was outstanding! I would definitely order it again. I was, however, very disappointed in the pork fried rice. It was not up to the standards that I am used to, and it had a bit of a scorched flavor which was offputting. I had expected some egg, vegetables, and chunks of pork. I used to come here as a kid back in the late 80s/early 90s. The food was so so and weird back then and the place was filthy. I tried it again for the first time in probably 25+ years. The place is exactly the same. The food is worse and it doesnt look like theyve cleaned the place since opening day in 1984. I felt sick afterward, probably all in my head from the experience. I, and my mother, were in the area on business and she (my mother) craved Chinese. My mistake...I didn't come to Yelp first, and I relied on JUST my rental cars navigation :( It pulled up another Chinese restaurant, but when I called to place an order, it was closed on Monday. So, I go to the next choice which was this place, and oh, how much I regret it...no joke, I STILL cringe at the thought of China Inn. I ordered the pepper steak and made an attempt to order the seafood egg rolls, but got a HUGE 5 min lecture on them not having it and the online menu being a mistake...I wish I wldve taken that as a sign, but yet again, I DIDN'T! I settled on the pepper steak w/o onions & peppers, and was told that it wld cost an extra $2 for that request - no biggie - and also opted for the chicken & pork egg roll. I arrived and cldnt believe my eyes when I say how rundown this place was. Even from the outside it has a creepy vibe. I walk in and feel dirty, as the place is not just old - which I cld deal with - but it is dirty and looks like it's never cleaned/maintained well, and things are thrown everywhere. There is a male sitting at the table w/ his back to me and I stand there for a moment and then say, "excuse me." He turns around and I feel scared! He approaches me and has no sense of personal space and I tell him that I called in my order...he tells me to wait a moment, and as I'm waiting he and another male are having a loud conversation, but the other male is hidden behind...you guessed it...a CREEPY barrier! I'm still thinking of leaving, but since this wasn't for me, I braved it. After a few more moments he comes out requesting the money for the order and keeps telling me the amount over and over again, and is jumping in my face repeating it! I give him the amount and await my food...it comes out a few moments later and I dash! On to the food... There are NO words to describe the horror or gelatinous goo that was in that box! The egg roll almost came back up after a couple bites, and tbh, I really don't think the "beef" was in fact that! It tasted like a few days old nearly rotten pork in goo - meant to be gravy. I had to heat it up for quite a while to even sample it, as the goo had thickened, making tasting it a HUGE task! It was the worst experience of my Chinese food life! Stay away. The cleanliness of this place is, to put it nicely, rather lacking. The decor, particularly the carpet, appears to be from about 1979 (which is probably the last time it was cleaned). Worse, the food is, at best, mediocre, and at worst, pretty much inedible. We ordered General Tso's chicken that was NOT General Tso's - rather, it tasted like a bad version of Sweet and Sour chicken, and the chicken was so rubbery that we fed it to the dog.
