While Ventura is not the San Gabriel Valley China Kitchen comes close to great. Certainly the best Chinese restaurant we have found in Ventura. The server was knowledgeable and attentive. The atmosphere is serene and modestly upscale. Food : overall fresh and carefully made. Minced Chicken in lettuce cups appetizer was tasty and very fresh. Chefs special sea food brazier was chock full of large pieces of fish and shellfish in a light but tasty broth. Mongolian lamb was very generous with the diced meat and a perfect sauce. A shrimp with veggies showed off what fresh plump prawns can be like at their best. WE will be back. read more

My husband and I used to go to this restaurant before it changed hands. We went last week and were very pleased with the meal and service. The menu was a little different from what we were used to, but we both found dishes we enjoyed. I'm vegetarian, so I chose the mixed vegetables dish (used to be Buddha's Delight) and my husband had the chicken with green beans. The egg rolls were very hot and fresh. We like this particular Chinese restaurant because sometimes it's nice when out shopping to take a break and sit down in a spacious place with music, where you are not being rushed. If I could give zero stars I would!! I took three bites of food and was charger $12.80! I asked before I sat down if the food was the same as the previous restaurant I was told it was better. I have been going to the restaurant for over 30 years with my family. I'm only 33 years old so I'm not some old person complaining. The food is not the same and I told them I didn't like it. I left very unhappy! If you have gone to this restaurant when it wasn't the previous one then you may like it. If you want the mandarin house this is no where near it!!!! They don't even have the same dipping sauces. I have never heard of being charged after eating three bites of food. Its not like I ate all of it. And two of the bites I spit out! read more

The overall experience was pleasant, however one absolute "no-no" prevented me from giving China Kitchen more stars. In short, the appetizer that I ordered (barbecued spare ribs) was burning hot on the outside, and frozen on the inside. When pressed, the waitress reluctantly admitted that they microwave them. Yes, microwave. If I wanted microwaved food, I wouldn't go out to a restaurant, would I? To be clear, my other dishes were fresh, hot, and tasty, but for me serving something in that manner shows such poor judgement, that I would be hard pressed to give them another try. The owner apologized and asked me if I wanted another order, but I politely declined being slightly grossed out not knowing if I just ate raw meat. This is what happens when you cut corners, so I hope they realize their mistake and make the appropriate changes to their cooking methods. read more

Though there were good points, overall it didn't quite justify the price. Service was excellent, waitress was very sweet and. attentive. The family meal was about $15 per person, plus the cost of drinks. The meal includes hot and sour or egg drop soup, egg rolls, and rice, along with an entree. Fried noodles are complimentary. My parents and I ordered chicken chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, and hunan beef. The chow mein had good consistency, however lacked its own particular flavor. The chicken in it was slightly chewy for my taste. I mixed it with the other entrees and rice, and added chili sauce (you have to ask for sauce) The sweet and sour chicken was my favorite. The sauce was tasty, and the chicken had a good subtle crunch, and was well cooked. The beef was alright, the sauce was spicy and tasty, but it felt a little too chewy for me as well. I suppose that's a matter of taste, as it was my dad's favorite. I also was put off when I seemed to find a hair in my food. I'm not certain whether it was my own or actually a stringy piece of a vegetable, but it wasn't pleasant. I don't know which entree it was from, as I mixed them. I probably won't go back unless someone takes me and pays for my meal, then again, I am pretty picky if I'm spending more than ten dollars on a meal. read more

Best chinese food ive tried. We had the Mongolian beef and it was very tender and had a lot of meat. The honey orange chicken was juicy on the inside but chunchy on the outside. They used to make orange chicken spicy before, i didn't see it on the menu this time. We also tried the deep fried wontons and the pot stickers. The feep fried wontons tasted fresh,you can tell they have clean oil. The pot stickers were bigger than other places. I almost forgot to add if you order the chow mein make sure to try it with shrimp. Overall we were happy with our visit and the waitress was excellent. Will be coming back soon read more

Did the American thing and went out for Chinese food for Chinese New Year and based on the yelp reviews/ratings, this seemed like the best bet in town. Overall, a huge disappointment. We ordered their version of Sichaun style wontons. The sauce they were in tasted stale and the filling meat was spongy and more of a mystery meat than anything. Seafood hot pot was decent, but not the clay pot of seafood and veggies I was expecting, but a seafood assortment in an oily broth. The fried green beans were okay, nothing spectacular. This is the typical strip mall chinese restaurant. You pass by a couple of these in every town in America. This one is a real cut above the norm, with exceptionally friendly service, attentive folks that really care about what they are doing. The food is excellent. It is pretty much typical Americanized Chinese faire but done well, with good sized portions. We wished we had split an entree, but we ordered two. I had the Walnut Shrimp that was tasty, lightly tempura breaded and a tangy sauce. My other half had curried chicken that he said was remarkably flavorful. We had a complimentary plate of spring rolls courtesy of Yelp that were very good, and filled with fresh vegetables. We'll be back the next time we are in Ventura. For "Americanized" Chinese food, this place is exceptional. They had all the standard fare, but also some very different flavors, too - thinly sliced lamb with a spicy cumin sauce...! Everything we ordered was delicious and perfectly cooked. The service was also excellent. My elderly mother has difficulty sitting at many restaurant tables, and they were very helpful and courteous in trying to accommodate her needs. First time back in a few years and it was not as good as I remember. The pork fried rice had a small portion of over cooked pork pieces and don't get me started on the honey walnut shrimp. This was inedible. We are not picky eaters but we couldn't eat it. The texture was off putting and sauce tasted like pure sugar. The beef sticks were as tender as the bottom of my shoe! The waitress was super nice though but I would expect that being the only people in the restaurant at the time. Big tip: do not go to the woman's restroom unless you want to fish the toilet paper out after you use it. There is a big sign warning you to not throw any toilet paper in there or it will clog. China Kitchen has become a "go-to" for me! They have some terrific vegetarian choices. I especially love the Dry Wok Vegi-Chicken. Unique flavor, good heat level and healthy ingredients! The Singapore Rice Noodles is another good call, with a curry spice. I also really enjoy the Hot and Sour soup, which you can get by the cup (or larger) for take out, which is not always the case in other restaurants. I usually order take out. I am glad to say that we had marvelous meals at CHINA KITCHEN near Bed Bath and Beyond. The chow mein and fried rice had no flavor. The orange chicken was super gamey like they used rib meat or something. After the change the food wasn't as good but we went last night and it is back to being a good place to go for Chinese food. The lady who sat us down was nice and seated us quickly, than our waitress Vivian was awesome and so funny, she would laugh with us and made us laugh too!
