Tepenyaki / Hibachi Grill /Mongolian BBQ is back at China Star Tonight I went to China Star, on Dowlen, next to Chucky Cheese and across from Parkdale. This was my first time back in several months to what had been our family favorite. The buffet and sushi bar were substantially unchanged, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that China Star had reopened it's "Hibachi Grill" where patrons can assemble their choices of vegetables, noodles, spices, chicken, beef, pork, and steak. The plate will be cooked to order with the patrons' choice of sauces, all in front of the customer. There is no extra charge for this. Among the choices of raw items that may be chosen are minced garlic, pineapple, celery, shredded carrots, cabbage, green onions, mushrooms, and eggs. The proteins mentioned above were chicken, beef, pork, and steak. I normally would get one plate, plus the buffet and sushi, but tonight (since they had my favorite cut of steak) I had two plates, and less buffet. read more

I had my son's birthday party here today and unfortunately, it was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. From the moment our guests arrived, the manager repeatedly harassed people about whether they had paid. There was no sign posted anywhere stating that party guests had to pay upon entering, and several people were only there to celebrate with us they didn't even eat. Despite that, they were still questioned and made to feel uncomfortable. What really upset me was seeing the manager approach a 12-year-old child and try to take his drink, asking if he had paid for it. That should have never happened. I repeatedly explained that everyone had paid, and every guest had a receipt. I even asked if they wanted to see my bank transaction because the constant questioning had become excessive and embarrassing. Another issue was that they charged children the adult buffet price simply because of their height. They're still children, and that policy should be made clear before charging families. To make matters worse, much of the food was cold. We actually had to wait until fresh, hot food was brought out before we could eat and still didn't enjoy because it was all disgusting. Overall, what should have been a joyful celebration turned into a stressful and frustrating experience because of how we and our guests were treated. I believe customer service should make people feel welcomed, not singled out or accused. Sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant based on my experience. read more

Absolutely trashhhh, crawfish was the best thing there in my opinion and it was below mediocre. How can you be a Chinese restaurant and not even have okay orange chicken or fried rice?? My husband and I felt nauseous as soon as we got outside. Both puked as soon as we got home. Sushi rice quite literally as hard as a rock. Any meat tasted like jerky. Hibachi was a joke. They kept taking out the carbs, re warming them, and bringing them back out, lord knows how long they've been sitting out. Wouldn't be surprised if it was days. The service was good and there was lots of food choices, but the crab legs were so dry there was no meat left in them.

First of all, it was extremely hot inside there, very uncomfortable. The fried food was dried out. The fish tasted good in the very middle, which was the only place you could find some that wasn't like leather. Honestly, I love Chinese food, Kung Pao is one of my favorites, but it was not good at all. Nothing there tasted very good, really. I sadly can't say anything good about their food. We visited this Chinese buffet on 5/26/2025 around noon . Our first time here . everyone was polite and attentive ,BUT the food was bland . Not even the hot and sour soup was good . It had a different flavor . I'm not sure if they mix ingredients from left overs and add a weird flavor to the food . We felt sick later. Not going back . read more

There are only two Chinese buffets in town: Golden Star and this one, China Star. Golden star is newer but the food here is better. Came here for a family luncheon. Good place for a big blended Filipino lunch! Ribs were mediocre Shrimp was amazing. My mother thought everything was great. Worst food I've ever had at a Chinese buffet. The food was bland and cold, even when they were sitting on hot plates. The hibachi grilled closed an hour before the restaurant closed and no one informed any of the guests that it was closing. I had to ask for three separate dishes because they were empty on the bar. They close the restrooms to clean them before the restaurant closed so we couldn't use the restrooms. I would definitely recommend the water. It was cold and wet. That was the only good thing about this restaurant. Save your money because it is not worth $16 a person. read more

Why am I giving a 4 star to a restaurant that has given me stomach pains two times in my 6 visits? Well to begin with a year ago when I told myself I will never come back here I came back on a whim to see if anything has changed and it did. It went from cluttered half empty buffet with terrible music that has no match to what you would want to hear while eating (don't ask me, I don't want to get into that) with some of the most spaced out looking individuals working there to a decent buffet that actually has depth in their implications that they stride in keeping up to par with the customer count in standing. The parking lot is ample. The inside is starting to show it's age but still decently clean. I could have sworn I was paying $13 for the buffet last year but now the current price is $11, well worth it. The service depending on who you get is a dice roll. Ask for the server "Honeur" (Honor), she has been the best out of the rest that knows a little more about maintaining a table. Defensive driving course is held here so that's a good one two. Hostess do not know how to spread out the clientele so your server might be in the weeds the next moment you notice. This means taking turns on customers for each server rather than setting 4 tables down within a span of 5 minutes and no I'm pretty sure they didn't ask to sit there. Water has a neutral taste to it, doesn't taste like fish has been swimming in it. Temperature of the food compared to last year is almost right on, not steaming but still hot when you are at your table with it for 5 minutes, last year I could have sworn someone turned off the tables to save energy or something. It has a "Hibachi grill" where you take your selected raw ingredients to a cook, they cook it in front of you, The size of the buffet I would say if you can imagine a standard length of a buffet there are at least 3 main stream food lines and a shorter one with the cold salads and such off tothe side. read more

We were wanting Chinese, as we haven't had it in over a year since we relocated. We were in Beaumont on errands so we decided to give China Star Buffett a try. We were both wanting Egg Rolls and they were really good here! I love Chinese Hot Mustard and had to ask. Our waitress brought us some from the condiment bar, I guess we didn't look that far, but she was very nice and helpful! I forgot how good real Hot Mustard was and over did it a little bit on my first bite! The horseradish or whatever it is the pit in it that makes it so spicy was right on the money! Once I took a breath and the spices fumes from the mustard went straight to the back of my head like someone had stuck a knife in me!!! Lol!!! I squinched and had years in my eyes!! My wife asked what was the matter? I told her I haven't had real Chinese Mustard in so long I forgot how hot it was!!! It's not a Hot Sauce kind of hot, it's very different as it goes directly to you olfactory senses in your nose then straight to the back of your head! It's almost painful!!! But, oh it was good! I just had to remind myself that it's not the milder mustard that you get in a jar from La Choy!!! We really enjoyed the rest of our food. They're noodles, rice, and fried dumplings were very good. I got some General Sho's chicken and it was a little over fried, but ok. My wife got some Sushi from the Sushi bar and it was very good! The rest of everything was really pretty good! The only reason you should be in their parking lot is to make a u-turn. If you are reading this review and are about to walk into China Star, RUN. Where do we begin? It begins with a drab and dingy front entrance, and a pond with algae in it. Food quality on the buffet is sub-par (below average)...it tastes like it's been sitting for hours. The meat at the hibachi had a color that seemed off. Their chicken, dumplings, rice was most definitely old. Their bathroom had a strong, pungent sewer odor. What's going on here ? Horrible management, old food I usually don't do reviews however today my family and I went to China Star for lunch. We actually was excited about going since we have been many times before and have had a great experience. However today we go we pay and sit at our table. I go get my food I got the lo mein orange chicken general chicken some salt and pepper ribs and the barbecue ribs. This is what I eat each time I go. I sit down I take a few bites of my food and it just doesn't taste right the salt and pepper fried ribs was old hard and rubbery so I didn't even bother to try them. I drank my sweet tea but I started to feel nauseous. I'm thinking ok it will pass so I go get a plate of crawfish which is one main reason I came I ate one but I still am nauseous. I grab the salt off the window seal from behind me thinking that would help but it didn't. So at that point I was done. I called the waitress over to inform her to just give a heads up so that it wouldn't happen to someone else and she walks off go get the owner Lisa if that's even her name and that's when all he'll broke loose. She accuses me of liein saying that because I had been there for a while that it wasn't true. I try to explain to her that the waitress took a full plate away from the table and the waitress was scared to even speak up for fear of loosing her job. She then says hold up she going to go look at the camera. She returns to my table and again accused me of lieing but when I told her exactly what she saw on the camera she started saying you not getting a refund for everyone only for me. I told her I never asked for a refund I was giving her a heads up to avoid someone else getting sick. She was pissed at me because I became ill. She started saying she don't care go to the hospital she not worried etc. This restaurant needs new management and need to understand that food borne illness can kill. I've eaten here a few times and this location has always been a little lacking but today was just awful. The waitress was a doll as usual so this doesn't reflect her. There were empty plates on the sushi bar and no one was making any more, they were out of spoons for the soup, the crawfish was TINY and overcooked so when you try to peel it, it would just turn to mush. Also the ranch dressing was completely empty. People were standing around like they had nothing to do but no one was fixing the issues. Also there wasn't many options like there have been before. More like 3.8. We got there fairly late for the dinner buffet so some things weren't as fresh as they could've been. That's on us. Selection was pretty good, service was good, it was quiet. We went about 7:30. For a $15 buffet I'd go again. On the inside door a sign said the grill was closed and also looked pretty old so the grills been shutdown for awhile. Outdoor banners and signs need redone. The food here is not very good, it was $36 for two adults and two drinks during the lunch hours. I thought the food would taste like all of the other Asian foods in the area but it was nasty and cheaply made. You can tell this place is only trying to save themselves money and don't worry about the quality of the food. I'm giving two stars because our waitress was very nice. First off, this isn't a hibachi restaurant as the name would lead you to believe. It is actually just a typical Chinese buffet, with a Mongolian grill and a sushi bar. The place does have a tasteful and pleasant appearance; clearly a lot of effort was put into the decor and layout. It almost looks like a trendy nightclub except for having steam tables in place of the dance floor. Unfortunately, the same effort wasn't put into the quality of the food. The restaurant has an abundance of entrees available on the buffet. However, on the day I went there for lunch, everything tasted consistently bad---bad enough that I am writing this review. When I say bad, I mean everything tasted fishy or rancid. Three of the four people in our lunch party had gastrointestinal distress immediately after lunch. Do NOT eat here. read more

This place is your standard buffet of Chinese food...nothing special and nothing bad. Its mediocre at the worst/best! The service is hit or miss sometimes as the non Chinese workers seem to not care too much and the Chinese ones almost treat you like your being a bother if you ask them for something! Now that being said there are exceptions. There is one young Chinese man and he is on it. And a older white lady that tries very hard to see to your needs while your there. The food is also very hit or miss, now mind you they have all the normal's but also have a sushi bar! I use the term "sushi" loosely! as it is fish on sticky rice...but done with NONE of the flair of other sushi places (again its a Chinese buffet!) Why would you go here for sushi!? It is passable and most of the time pretty tasty...sometimes! The Buffet is always well stocked and appears fresh from the few times I have been there and the salad bar has a good mix of items. The desert bar is well stocked as well. The decor, drab to say the least. Its always far too dark in the restaurant and cold most of the time. Its like they keep it dark so you cant see how dingy the place is and that your booth or chairs are falling apart! The high chairs are mostly trashed and you have to go thru about 2-3 to get one that wont fall apart on you! Also the music is your standard Chinese musak played way to loud and often is just bad! Its like they play the musak too loud to make you want to hurry up and leave! Now you might take it that I hate this place...I do NOT, I just have low expectations when it comes to Chinese buffets in Beaumont! I go here at least 2 times a month and like I said it fills the need for cheap easy dinner with my family and no one has to clean up after dinner! Absolutely the worst Chinese buffet I've had. Everything has been sitting for a while. Hard and stale. The sushi was super small and very dry (also just sitting for a while) from what there was. Never restocked the sushi that was bare anyway. Tbh your better off saving money and eating out of the Whataburger garbage can. It will even taste better I'm sure. PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Not worth the time or money. They advertise that on weekends for an adult it's $14.55 per person but we ended up paying $18 per person. Which isn't that bad but the food was horrible the shrimp tasted like dirty water, nothing had any flavor and my water tasted like they cooked the shrimp in it. read more

Last time I reviewed this restaurant, I only gave it two stars and it was lucky to get that many. They shortly closed down because others obviously had similar experiences. They have now reopened with the original owner back in charge and it is so much better. The food is better, the sushi is good with a much better selection, they have fixed the server issue, and the ice cream is no longer prepackaged in little cups. I highly recommend this buffet. I would like to see more Chinese food and less American food, but it's a great place to take you family. PS: You have to try the baked oysters! read more

This place recently opened up (about 6-8 weeks ago) I didn't want to go try this place out right when they opened up, i wanted to let them settle down and get used to operations (that way i can give them a good accurate review). My visit to this place started off unpleasant and went downhill from there. Upon walking in with three other friends, we got no attention from either of the TWO hosts (that were on their cell phones) I had to ask them if we could have a table for 4. Take note this was at 8:30pm after we were sat down the waitress (who was extremely polite and helpful) took our drink orders, after that we went out to get some food I start from left to right which was the sushi bar first, then i get...... OK THIS IS A LONG REVIEW ILL JUST GIVE YOU CLIFF NOTES Arrived at restaurant at 8:30, hostess' do not acknowledge us, (too busy on their cell phones). Sat down and did not mention to us that the Hibachi grill was closing in a few minutes, Take note we were seated at 8:30 and the place doesn't close till 10pm. We get to the hibachi grill only to find out hes cleaning the grill. Did not even have Tabasco for the oysters. Most items in the buffet had been old and not replaced Some items on buffet ran out @ hours before closing time. All in all it goes down to bad management. read more

After waiting for a seat for around 20 mins simply because they had no handicap seating, we finally are sat first place go is the sushi bar! The sushi bar was clean and looked nice however when I excitedly sat down with my plate of sushi and threw a hunk of salmon in my mouth I immediately regretted it. It had this slimy nastiness to it. It was old and had no flavor. I tried to cover the slime with Soy sauce it didn't work! Ew it was pitiful, shrimp wasn't much better. From now on I will not get sushi here.... The food was good however!! I absolutely love the pork dumplings!!! General tso chicken is great as well. The bathroom was disgusting. Parking was decent. Use to be incredible. Just went downhill. Orange chicken = tough as a rock, general chicken = ditto, all the shrimp has that overseas, farm raised weird taste to it. Hibachi is good but steak was very tough. Sushi was mediocre at best. Not even as good as HEB's sushi. Spare ribs were 90% fat and gross. Seafood casserole was in-edible. Egg roll was soft and old. It is a shame this place use to be so good. The wait staff is still great! However that's just not enough to save a sinking ship. read more

The food was average and room temperture . They watch certain guess and rush them out the restaurant. So busy being pushy the waitress took my partial off the table along with the napkins and threw in the trash along with other disgusting food waste .With no help... I digged and comb through the trash over forty minutes until I located them. I didn't enjoy my meal and management didn't apologize or comp the meal. Also insisted i still had to pay .
