Complete biased review. I love this place. I have been coming here for years and to quote a relatives opinion I have never left without a stomach full of food and a smile on my face. I am a sucker for Mongolian beef and chicken. I love the won ton soup and egg rolls. Their menu, as most family owned Chinese restaurants, has a crazy amount of things on it. I can promise you it all tastes great. They prepare it for you very quickly and it's right off of the stove back there. The building is a hole in wall. It's a darker peaceful environment. Fine tables, but the booth seating has some wildly sprung out cushions. The waitress which is the owner with her husband, is the absolute nicest woman of all time. If you go there more than once she will remember who you are and at some point get to politely know you. She loves meeting people and is always very happy. They also care very much about their restaurant and do consider polite recommendations if it is valid, appropriate and with in their means. This place is definitely an Englewood gem of a family owned business and it's a great spot to hit up for good food. read more

We got carry out 11/7/21 and it was horrible. Fried rice was burnt and so salty we couldn't eat it. Chicken and vegetables was over cooked and disgusting. Hot. I ordered the crab rangoon, the dumplings, vegetable fried rice, mushroom egg foo young, sweet and sour chicken, egg drop soup, and one of the things I ordered came with white rice. Let me be clear here, this is American Chinese food, but for what it is its the best I've had anywhere. Below are descriptions of the items I ordered: The rangoon looked a bit iffy since it wasn't folded how I'm used to seeing them done, however the filing was perfect for the dough and slightly sweet, with a nice taste of crab. The dumplings were great. The dough/filling proportion was nicely balanced and the sausage inside was sweet, mildly spicy and very flavorful. The vegetable fried rice was cooked perfectly. The vegetables had a nice char to them, the dish was not overly oily. Amazing flavor. Mushroom egg foo young. Again, great balance and flavor. Cooked perfectly. The sweet and sour chicken was for the kids but I tried it. It was standard in most ways aside from the fact that I can tell the restaurant is very clean by the freshness of the taste of these. The fryer oil must be changed often. The egg drop soup was the low point of the order but it was still good. Needed a bit more seasoning. The white rice was great also. I read some reviews before coming, and was intrigued...but what an incredibly pleasant surprise! They make their own egg rolls, which are excellent--no frozen, mass-produced generic egg rolls here. I don't even really like egg rolls, but the first one I had (pork) was so good that I decided to try a beef one, too. It was delicate and filled with vegetables and VERY thin-sliced beef. Delicious. The Mala Green Beans were the best I've had--cooked just right, with lots of green onions and mushrooms to add complexity. And the Vegetarian Moo Shu was another great surprise, since they use traditional rice flour "pancakes" as the wrappers, unlike so many places that cheat and use white flour tortillas instead. The final great surprise was that the rice they use is actually a very light, high quality sticky rice. And all the portion sizes were more than generous, so I took home enough for at least another meal...or two. I took a chance on this place, and will definitely come back. Very good fresh food ! I order Chinese food a lot when I travel and two weeks ago I ordered delivery from a Chinese place close to this one . It was the worst food in ever ordered ! So I was scared to order from this place however it was a complete 180 ! I mean the fried rice was sooooo fresh and great tasting I did not get much veg in the rice but once I tasted it wow . I also got orange chicken it was so fresh and tasted delish ! Also they have the best fried crab Rangoon I ever had I always get those very rarely are they halfway that good ! My son got sweet sour chicken and it was perfect they give you so much food two dinners can feed at least 4 people with leftovers ! This is a hidden jewel. It's in a nondescript strip mall and there's nothing outside to impress the customer. Once inside we were greeted by a charming young hostess who assured us that the food was very good. And so it was. The food was light, with fresh ingredients. The egg rolls were a rarity: something you'd actually want to buy on purpose. The crab Rangoon melted in our mouths. And the portions of the main dishes were quite generous; we had enough for supper the next day and satisfied with it. The surprising thing was the decoration: a flower and a bird expertly carved from a fresh carrot. I have gone to China Star many years. I used to be great then someplace along the way it changed hands and it is no longer as good. They have cut corners until the food is not as good as it once was. This weekend I tried to order food and the person the answered the phone was understandable. Their English was not good at all. I got frustrated and did not order. I finally went across the street to the other Chinese place and ordered my food and it was good. I may just change my place to order Chinese. China Star needs employees that can speak clear English and quit cutting corners and sizes on their food. read more

China Star has become our go to Chinese place! They seem to do a lot of carry out, but we like to dine in. The Mala green beans are just delicious. I also enjoy the egg rolls and the House Special soup. My husband and I have enjoyed trying different things on the menu, and we have enjoyed all that we have tried. 7 lunch specials were available for only $6.95 or less. I had a difficult time deciding between the Chicken Teriyaki Sauce, Honey Garlic Chicken and the Mongolian Triple. My wife chose what was evidently a new lunch special selection, Szechuan Triple - helpfully identified as a spicy dish by two red peppers on the menu: chicken, shrimp and beef sauteed with broccoli, napa baby corn & mushrooms in a spicy brown sauce. I eventually made up my mind and went with the Mongolian Triple: beef, shrimp & chicken sauteed with green and white onions in a sweet brown sauce, served over crispy rice noodles. All lunch specials also included steamed or fried rice, appetizer of the day, plus your choice of soup. (egg drop, hot & sour, wonton or creamy chicken) I got the egg drop soup, rice and an egg roll to go with my meal. When the actual meals were delivered, I realized we were going to have leftovers. We had finished only about 2/3 of the appetizer tray, and while the lunch specials weren't oversized, we had already more than halfway satisfied ourselves on appetizers. My wife said she enjoyed her Szechuan Triple, and that it was not too spicy at all. I loved the Mongolian Triple as well, and found myself savoring the sweet sauce over the spring onions and variety of meats. Delicious food!! Even the basics like their fried rice was yummy. The food tastes authentic, not like these fast food type Chinese places, if that makes sense. Well, the original owners must have sold recently (even though it was listed as just a remodel)... And all I can say is: I want my China Star back! It's a crime that they are using the same name. We've tried them twice and each time has been a disappointment. Prices have gone way up, quality WAY down and service isn't all that hot either. I ordered mongollian beef. Medium spicy. It was NOT spicy and it had vegetables in it that dont come in mongollian beef. All other chinese food places make their mongollian beef with onions and green onions. This had peppers, carrots, water chestnuts and snap peas. The sauce tasted like a brown gravy rather than the spicy goodness I have had elsehwere. In fact, it was mostly vegetables in my MONGOLLIAN BEEF dish. This is a shame it is even called a beef dish.. should have been called mongollian vegetables with no heat and a touch of meat. This place is terrible and I will never go back. read more

Not the worst Chinese food I've ever had, but not anywhere close to the best either. I ordered a tofu dish, and while most local Chinese places take the time to marinate and cook the tofu prior to adding it to the dish, this restaurant does not. Most local restaurants also use crispy tofu, and this place used soft tofu, with absolutely no seasoning. It was terrible and flavorless. The rice was overcooked and mushy, and the egg drop soup was tasteless. The spring rolls didn't come with any dipping sauce. For a $20 lunch for two, I was not impressed. I like china star but the last three times I've gotten take out when I get home something is always missing from my order, like the peking sauce for the wings was missing and the sauce for my fried dumplings was missing. Today when I ordered the sauce for my wings was missing again. I understand it gets busy in there but when I was there it wasn't and it seemed like when my order came out they were trying to rush me out of there especially when I asked if everything in my order was there.
