Wow. I am not known for having a great memory. For some reason, I had in my mind that someone had warned me about staying away from this place. Well, if they did, they must have been trying to keep it for themselves. We used to have an office in this same section of buildings, but I never ate here because I was afraid to. I still don't know why I had that impression. Anyway, last night I took a wrong turn and instead of turning around I decided to go this way. I am ALWAYS in the mood for Chinese food so I thought I'd pull in there and see how bad it was. You know what? THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. It's not a dirty, grimy place like I was expecting. It is nice and clean. They weren't terribly busy, but busy enough. The family business had two of their children working and both were very polite and very professional. It's nice to see them learning responsibility and the value of good customer service. You could tell the owners appreciate return business. Some customers in line after me were greeted by name and the owner came out to speak to their children before he headed out with a delivery order. I was excited to get home to try out my order. The crab rangoon was really yummy. It was crispy but not overcooked like some places. You could still tear it into pieces without it shattering into shards of wonton crumbs. The sweet and sour sauce was fantastic. You could actually taste fruity flavors in it... it didn't just taste like red sugar. Their hot mustard was amazing! I can deal with hot mustard in packets if I have to, but they give you little sides of real hot mustard and it is just right. I am saving the leftover mustard for anything else I eat this weekend. I also got Mongolian Beef. It was good. It is labeled as spicy and I can handle pretty spicy foods. It didn't seem terribly spicy to me, but if you are not able to handle spices you'd might need to be careful. If nothing is ever spicy enough for you, you might want to ask for extra spicy. They add zucchini to theirs, which is an ingredient that doesn't appeal to me, but I'm okay with picking around the few pieces. Portion size was great; plenty for leftovers. If I had to make one critique it would be not having an option of fried rice or steamed rice. They give you steamed rice, which I know many people prefer. I'm not much of a fan of steamed rice and would have preferred simple fried rice with my meal. I ate a bit of the steamed rice, the taste was okay (I find many places have rice that tastes like dish soap) but the rice was a bit overcooked and came out in globs of mush instead of grains of rice. I think they prepackage the steamed rice in the take out containers so I might have gotten one that had been sitting around for awhile. It's okay because I wouldn't have eaten much of it anyway. In all, I think their prices are great...exactly what is competitive in the area, but with a great portion size. They have a clean, comfortable dining room and friendly staff. Are there last night! Very good m. My boyfriend and I got the General Tso dinner and egg drop soup and it was PLENTY for both of us! I'm very picky when it comes to Chinese food but this place definitely hit the spot. The General Tso was a lot spicier than any I've ever had which was unexpected but fine. The employees there are really nice as well. One thing though that's not really a complaint just a note: when we tried to call the number it gave us like a fax noise for some reason. This place is nice if you want to come and relax by yourself. It's generally very quiet and there is no tv and no background music, so you can have a nice conversation with someone or meditate. What I do like about this place is that you can see the cook and the cooking. Sometimes, it freaks me out when I can't see what the cook is doing to my food. Paranoid? yes! read more

China star is not the fanciest Chinese place; however it's reasonable priced, quick, and offer huge portions! Although it is exactly what you would expect out of a "typical" Chinese place; quality of the food is decent. They offer delivery or call in, if you rather dine in beware that it is a small place. It has been my local go to Chinese delivery place for over a year now. I have experimented with a few plates but always come back to my favorite one: general tso's chicken and an order of crab Rangoon. Sometimes I only order the chicken to make it to the minimum order required for delivery in order to get crab Rangoon. Out of all the items I have tried, I don't remember them being spicy. The sauced leans more towards sweet, I recommend trying it out. It's better than the Chinese places surrounding it. read more

Located on the end of a strip mall...nothing fancy. Lunch menu available every day for 5.99 and includes either a bowl of soup or an egg roll or crab rangoon. I was accustomed to lunch where the entrée came with the soup AND an appetizer.....here it's either or so I ordered an extra egg roll so I would have both. Turns out the reason they don't give you both is the portions are so big it was far more than I could eat! Everything is served in styrofoam with plastic utensils but is cooked fresh to order. The soup came in what looked to be at least a pint container and when I finished eating, my entree looked untouched...I will easily get 2-3 meals out of this. Flavors were fresh...average seasoning. First, let me clarify that Congress M did not go to China Star. The description does not fit. Maybe he went to China Tom. That aside, I've been going to China Star for years (since 2005), ever since they built the new buildings for Belle Roe Plaza. Yeah, the decor is simple with a large menu board, filled with standard pictures, on the back wall. But don't let that fool you. They are a simple family owned restaurant that has some of the best Chinese food around. And a fantastic value. Among my favorite dishes: General's Chicken, Hot & Spicy Chicken, and Pork with Garlic Sauce. The only thing I don't like is their Sweet & Sour Chicken... I prefer a very different style. To each their own. Their Egg Rolls and Crab Rangoon are great. And if you are in need of some soup to cure what ails you, or for that cold night, go for the Hot and Sour Soup or the Won Ton Soup. They are open to 10pm on most nights, and 10:30 on Friday Saturday, so you can take out some goodness on the way home. Just call ahead! And yes, they deliver. Finally, if you come for lunch, for under $6.00 you'll get an appetizer, a boat load of rice (white or fried) and a boat load of the main dish. Easily enough for two meals! Of note however is that they have a $4.99 lunch special that includes fried rice/lo mein with an entree and a side of soup, egg roll or crab rangoon (better known as cream cheese rangoon in these parts) Definitely not a place to go if you are looking for super authentic sit down slap yo momma good Chinese food, but if you're on a budget, need something quick, and you are tired of burger joints, this is a great alternative. This place is quick and ever so convenient. I generally crave items in the dumplings/noods category when my palate is hankering for an Asian flair. However, I love me some Crab Rangoon as well as some good ole General's Chicken. This place is dirt cheap, fast and convenient in that they take online orders which you can also pay for online. I order/pay online when I leave work and can swing by on my way home and it always seems to be ready early. It is clearly family run and there are usually a few of said "family" doing homework or other projects in the booths. But the charm of the dining area really stops there. There isn't much to look at in the seating area and we always get take out. Or delivery. Mostly takeout because their portions are so large, we have no need to order the amount of food that would require us to hit the $15 minimum. Which, is still quite low. read more

Although the moo shu pork was really tasty - this was WAY too much of a disaster overall for me to ever go back here. I made a delivery order (first time customer.) Tipped $5 before I realized that the entire bag was filled with liquid spilled over from the styrofoam box. My straw was wet, so it was almost impossible to get it unwrapped... Only to find out that the drink was wrong! And as if that weren't enough, my spring rolls were completely missing. Called the place, and they were only willing to give me a credit on a future order for the drink, and a free crab rangoon. After pressing for a refund to the credit card for the incorrect drink and the missing spring rolls, they did agree but hung up on me. Waste of money and time, won't return, don't recommend. Slightly annoying being an obvious one person order like the others I was with but not a big deal. The food itself? Such generic flavor. Most of the chicken pieces were nothing but fried breading covered in sticky (far too sweet) sauce. Was hoping for a fair amount of veggies but the few pieces were yellow and more mush than crunch. Many more options in the KC area that are much better all around even at this price point. I can't say I'll be back to China Star again. Life is too short for bad Chinese food. read more

I keep China Star in my regular restaurant rotation. It is well managed and the food is made fresh. It's fairly standard Chinese food for this part of the country. Most of the menu consists of fried breaded chicken smothered with different sauces. I usually order either the sesame chicken or the general tao chicken, but everything I have tried has been pretty good. The sauces usually have a more sweet flavor, which is what I prefer. You get a lot of food for your money at this establishment. I can usually make two meals out of the dinner combo. The lunch combo is a little cheaper and is still enough food for a full meal and a snack later. This is not a fancy restaurant and it has little in the way of aesthetics or theming. It's located in a strip mall. It also has very limited seating. This restaurant is no frills, but it does offer good Chinese food with large portions at a fair price. read more

I haven't been to this place for a while as I live in the western part of Mission and there's another place closer which I had been going to previously. But tonight I was over at Lowes and decided to drop in China Star which is in the same area. It's a small place and the seating isn't the greatest, but the food was fantastic and the people were great and very efficient. Personally the seating situation doesn't bother me as I usually get my food to-go anyway....it's the quality of the food that's most important to me.
