5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics…read more During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem.

I recommend Hu's Cooking to use a bigger bowl and more sauce because it was difficult to mix the noodles and the sauce wasn't...saucing, unfortunately. I wish there was more flavor in this dish. The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. The difficulty when eating this dish is gnawing the meat off the sharp bones of the duck. Mapo Tofu with white rice: pretty easy staple, no complaints here. Dinner on a Saturday was packed but we got seated quickly and food arrived fast.

There isn't much traditional indoor seating. Most of the seating inside is at the bar, with additional tables outside under some shade. Because of that, it's probably not my first choice for sitting down for lunch during a hot Houston day, but it works really well as a pickup or takeout spot. The staff has always been friendly, and they have a good system for getting people in and out. The batter was good and I really enjoyed the peppers and onions that accompanied the dish. I think a dipping sauce would have helped. My friend enjoyed the Fried Beef. They have quite a few locations around town if you don't want to venture into the downtown area. If you're near the Theater District, Cooking Girl is a great dining option.

China Stix absolutely lived up to the hype. I drove all the way from Dallas to Houston just to try their St. Louis chicken fried rice, and it was worth every mile. The dish was outstanding. Perfectly seasoned, packed with flavor and made with clearly high-quality ingredients. The chicken was tender, the rice had the ideal texture, and everything tasted fresh and well-balanced. What really stood out beyond the food was the staff. Everyone was welcoming, attentive and genuinely helpful. Which made the experience even better. This is my favorite Chinese place in Houston and I've been going there for a couple years now. My favorite dishes are the General Tso's chicken the pork fried rice. I wouldn't say that I love every dish, but I've tried most of them and most of them are pretty good. I'm not sure about the reviewer that said the fried rice was bland, I don't think it is. Plus, I heard that they don't use MSG, though I haven't verified that detail. I just know the food is tasty and the price is good. And I also think the to-go plastic containers are a plus. I only wish they stayed open later for those late night Chinese Food cravings. read more

The service is good with the staff being quite friendly, and you can get a decent-sized meal of 10-12 dumplings for between $10-11. The dumplings are decent if not great, and while there are better dumplings options in the Tunnels (such as Doozo's at the Park Shops), Star Chef is still a creditable lunch option. If I want dumplings and don't feel like making the walk to the Park Shops, Star Chef is where I go.

Would recommend (late night)…read more Stopped in at Spicy Girls during their late-night service. They have a separate menu and ordering style late at night -- it's all QR code, pay-on-your-phone ordering. So if you come in late in the evening, know the menu is more condensed and everything comes in to-go boxes. There's no real waiter; everything's just brought to you and you pay on the app. Using the QR code and app was simple and easy -- if you've been to Japan or other places that do it this way, it's a seamless setup. The menu was condensed when it came up, so we ordered a selection of things. Taiwanese beef noodle soup, $14.99 -- a pretty big serving. Three people could share it as a small bowl, or one person could make a full meal of it. Not packed with vegetables -- a little bok choy -- but the noodles were good and it had chunks of beef cooked nice and tender. The tendons were left on, though, and were a bit chewy; they could've cooked a little longer. The broth reminded me of a mapo tofu type broth -- super Szechuan-y and super oily. I enjoyed the flavor, but my wife said it was kinda mid. Would recommend it, just understand it's a very oily, spicy soup. Dandan noodles (added vegetables) -- some of the better dandan noodles I've had. You can add proteins and vegetables to pretty much anything on the menu. These came warm, which I appreciated -- a lot of times I've had them served cold, but these were good. I'd suggest them as a side noodle or something small. The serving was still pretty big, but to me it's more of an accoutrement than a main dish. General Tso's chicken -- mid at best. Honestly I'd take Panda Express orange chicken over this. Decent portion and it wasn't dry, it just wasn't flavorful -- the batter wasn't crunchy or flavorful either. Could've done without it, so I wouldn't suggest it. Spicy fried fish -- really good. It's sort of like a salt-and-pepper fish, except they hit it with a three-pepper blend and toss it in extra garlic, Szechuan spice, jalapeños, and the like. We enjoyed it a lot -- we even had enough for leftovers, and reheated in the microwave the next day it was still solid. Strong recommendation here. Fried rice (upgrade from white rice, +~$3) -- can't really suggest it. It wasn't awesome, especially for a $3 upcharge -- basically just rice tossed in oil with some green onions. No extra carrots, peas, or anything like that when we had it. We could've saved six bucks getting the white rice and probably been fine. A couple of things to note: they have beer and sake on the after-hours menu, and it's somewhat reasonably priced. All in all, an enjoyable experience. If you're looking for late-night Chinese food -- especially after hours, like midnight or later -- this is a place worth checking out. I'd also like to try their daytime menu sometime, since it's more versatile and would probably be slightly better. In the end, I'd recommend going here late night if you're in the area and looking for Chinese food. And I'd possibly return.
