For a cheap eat near the med center, it isn't bad. My co-workers and I were celebrating our continued employment during a cutthroat season of layoffs. The staff were very friendly and efficient. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and food at China Stix - especially during the current freeze in Houston (15th - 19th February). My daughter and I were without electricity, heat or water this week when we went searching for food at the Randall's that shares the same strip as China Stix. Intrigued by the line of people outside the restaurant, I discovered they are open and still serving. Once inside everyone is taking Covid-19 precautions well, they are constantly cleaning, and the staff are working over and above to get you in and out quickly. I counted 10 people behind the visible counter (see photo - four cooks/prep, three bagging/plating, two working the tills, one constantly cleaning), no up charge, and the food comes out hot and quick. This was the first hot food we'd eaten in three days, and it was excellent. An order of sweet and sour chicken was enough to re-plate and feed two people easily, plus they still offer combo deals with soup and spring rolls. A very thin crispy batter, well-cooked moist chicken, sauce on the side, and perfect steamed rice. Highly recommend, and my grateful thanks for their efforts to feed us during these unprecedented times. read more

It's really ZERO stars! This was our go to spot for Chinese takeout at work but after today NEVER AGAIN. After being hung up on 4 times, someone finally answered to take our order. (That was my first sign) The young lady asked if I minded giving my order to a trainee and to be patient. I said fine since we had only 3 orders this time. On one of the orders I told him brown sauce 3 times and he even repeated it to me. Order arrives. First thing, they forgot the 3 egg rolls that come with the 3 lunch combos. Then the order that was suppose to come with brown sauce was in white sauce. I called them and the young lady said it was her fault bc she didn't have time to train the new guy. So the mgr agreed to resend the correct order with brown sauce and the egg rolls in an hour and a half. As we are eating, my coworker finds 2 bugs and a hair in her food. We call the restaurant back and the mgr tells her to text him a picture (WOW). She takes the pics but the number won't text so she calls back to get the number again. By this time, my other coworker comes by and after hearing about the bugs decides she doesn't want her corrected order. So my coworker tells this to the mgr and asks if they can just give us a refund. He tells her to bring back the food! WHAT! We drive there and the mgr is now apologetic and says they were busy. What does that have to do with getting our order wrong and bugs in the food? He proceeds to tell me that my card was never charged. He does a void and I ask him to make a note on the slip. So basically, after getting hung up on 4 times, I should have opted out of Chinese food. All future Chinese food orders for work with go to Hunans. I know these kind of things can happen but the part that bothered me the most was the lack of customer service or genuine concern from the manager and staff. I've been coming here for the past 2 years, and I gave this place five stars not because it's gourmet or exquisite, but the bang for the buck can't be beat. First of all, this place tops Panda Express. Your order is made to order. Meaning it's not sitting under a heat lamp in a pan and scooped onto your plate. This means their batter is not heavy and tough to keep the crispness while it's sitting in its own sauce. The batter on their chicken is light and crunchy. The vegetables are definitely always fresh. Service is also spectacular! The cashier was super patient with my wife, who was having a hard time to decide what to get. He made several suggestions, one of which my wife took. MOST OF ALL: Portions are fair for the price you pay! At Panda Express, I always feel like I'm overpaying for the portion I receive, therefore I stopped going there. I ordered the sesame chicken combo with fried rice, a egg roll, a cream puff and wonton soup with a drink all for like 12$ not too bad. The sesame chicken was fresh, hot, tender and juicy. However the fried rice and broccoli that came with it were cold I would've like them to be heated up or cooked well enough. The egg roll was small crispy and delicious. The cream puff was perfect with just enough cream. Also, the wonton soup great and the wonton was huge with perfect texture. Overall, it was a great experience I would like to come back and try their lo mein noodles next. I wouldn't say this place knocked my socks off or anything, but for what I wanted it did the job. It's located on the corner of Holcombe and Buffalo Speedway in the Randall's shopping center. It's close to my apartment so I'll definitely be a frequent customer. Parking was so-so. There was parking in the lot, but when ordering take out I like having takeout parking; so I can run in and run out! My mom and I didn't order anything outside of your basic lunch Chinese menu. You know, general Tso chicken, shrimp fried rice. I do have to say that the general Tso chicken was good and tender. I've been places where it has been kind of tough. Hands down, yummy food and great lunch pricing! I am slowly becoming a fixture in this establishment as I frequent it at least twice a week during lunch hours. I typically order from their lunch combo menu which includes your fave entree, choice of hot & sour or egg drop soup, white or fried rice, and an a small chicken and veggie eggroll. Yum! If I could give a quarter of a star I would. I was appalled by the hairs (plural) in all four dishes that we ordered today for lunch. One of the dishes had half of the amount it usually has (I am suspecting the dish fell Over in the delivery car and he just scraped it right back in). This is a good Chinese restaurant for something fast and easy especially when you come out from Randall's and you don't have any will to go home and cook. There is a good variety of dishes offered and I like a lot the Kung Pao and The Cashew Nuts Chicken. I try to stick to this two since I like them a lot. I also like the sides: simple and in big portions. Regarding the ambiance, it is a little loud because of their air conditioning/cooking activity. Highly Americanized Chinese food, although the cooks in the kitchen (or at least one of them) speak Chinese. These are individual plates, not family style like some Chinese restaurants. Rice is a per plate basis. I ordered the pan fried crispy noodles, for which I had a huge craving. It was ok... the way it was served makes it quite difficult to eat. The bottom is a huge disc of noodles, which are about as crispy as a package of uncooked ramen. The meat, veggies, and sauce are piled on top, making it difficult to break off some of the crispy noodles to eat with the meat and veg. I made do though, but it was an awful lot of effort for some quick Chinese food. It wasn't really what I had in mind when I thought crispy noodles. This place works in a pinch, but Holcombe has an abundance of Chinese restaurants. read more

I considered leaving but then decided maybe she was just having an off day. Just discovered this place. Really good, and very quick. My friend ordered and I was behind her in line, when I got to the table she already had her soup. The wonton soup was good, served very warm. I got the General Tso's chicken and while it wasn't very spicy, it was very flavorful. The chicken bites didn't have a ton of batter and a lot of chicken! These experiences are strictly related to experiences with food delivery using their delivery services. I have not had the opportunity to dine in and thus cannot comment on that experience. We have been ordering from this restaurant almost on a weekly basis for months, and for the last few weeks we've been continually disappointed, and today was the last straw. For the last few weeks, the delivery driver has been insisting that we tip him. While we normally give tips to delivery drivers, that is our choice, and we don't appreciate being coerced into doing so. Even still, we continued to order from them because the food is normally fast, delicious and well-portioned. Most recently, we ordered our items, the same delivery man came and insisted his tip, and when we sat down to eat, we found hair in each item we received. Additionally, it appeared that some dishes had less quantity than others, and the rice items were mixed (I suspect as if they tipped over and were sloppily put back into the container). When we called about our concerns the restaurant staff could not address them because the manager wasn't in, and they never called back to inquire further like they said they would. Up until this point, I would have given them 3-4 stars, but they get 0 stars for delivery service and concern for hygiene (therefore settling on 2 stars). I usually don't put up reviews, but felt that I had to do so for this restaurant as it was ONCE one of my favorite restaurants. My wife and myself used to get Chinese only from this place as it's close by and they used to be good, but after today's experience, I will never be back. I called in to put two orders and requested them to be very Spicy with one steam rice and the other one fried rice. I kindly reminded the person over the phone to ensure the order is right as they have messed up last time. He read the order for me twice and I headed over there to pick the food. Upon arrival, the gentlemen in the front had my good ready and yet more read for me the order. As I got to the house and due to the corona virus, we put the food in our plates and trashed the boxes that can with it. First surprise, two steamed rice (no fried one) and neither meals had any spice into them. It really bothered me as it's the second time and felt I must call the restaurant. I called the restaurant and the person picked up transferred me to the manager (richard). I was extremely shocked with the respond from Richard. He indicated that he will give me discount next time I come. I told him I don't want discount, I just want my good right for tonight! Then he said okay why don't you can come back to get the fried rice, but can't do anything for the food as I should have indicated that I wanted them Thai Spice. I told him this is not the first time and we always get the same exact thing. He asked me to bring the meals so he can throw them on the stove and add spice to them. I told them that's they already on the plates and I don't want to keep moving good around. I can bring them back in my personal plates, but at least expect a replacement for the right order. It's very sad to see this poor customer service from Richard. I hope the owner sees this post and take actions before he looses more customers. Never back again and neither should you. This is the best convenient Chinese food eatery in town! I absolutely love going here, and trust me, I've been going since 1998. I moved away for 3 years to attend law school in Minneapolis, MN and searched for some place to satisfy my Chinese cravings, but nothing surfaced. My cravings continued and the first thing I did when I arrived back in Houston was head to China Stix! Imagine my delight when I saw the same people behind the counter and the same cooks at the woks! My favorite things to order: I love to order the General Tso, Sweet and Sour chicken, and the crab puffs. Unfortunately, now that I'm on this health kick, I try not to visit but once every two weeks. But I tell you, this place is FRESH, CLEAN, and definitely DELICIOUS. I'd much rather go here than any fancy place. Kudos, to the owner. He has managed to keep the same quality of service and food, even in the midst of this economic downturn. If you go, definitely try the vegetables and chicken over rice (if you're trying to consume less calories) or the General Tso's chicken if you want to indulge. It will change your world. The chicken and fried rice and soup was pretty good. The eggrolls were small and subpar... not worth the price if bought separately.... sooo a couple hrs later after eating my stomach has been killing me since 3am... I cannot stay out the restroom. Being a morning lark, I tend to fade in the late afternoon. Flashing back to my college days, I used to laugh at those that would eat dinner at 530 PM. Nowadays, I'm pretty famished by then and develop a one-track mind revolving around...food. [What did you think I was going to say? You can call me Ms. Jackson, since you're "Nasty".] Nestled in the bosom of West University in Vanderbilt Square*, China Stix offers up the local neighborhood a sprightly mix of old standbys but with "fresh, fast, and flourish" as watchwords. Their model is a twist of a Cafe Express one: order and pay at the counter, open kitchen makes it while you watch, then they bring it out to you. Fresh ingredients are bought daily and used only when you place your order - you won't get any precooked mush that has been sitting for who-knows-how-long. Not a whiff of MSG, too - a very good thing. Placing my order for the stand-alone Hunan Chicken dish ($7.45), the kitchen staff leaped into action to gather the fresh components, cook it, and had it turned out to my table within 5 minutes. Laden with red bell peppers, snow peas, broccoli, mushrooms, and chicken, this dish was tasty albeit a little on the unspiced side. The dish could have morphed into a combo meal to add a soup, fried rice, egg roll, and cheese puff for $8.25. The "flourish" part is that they had a clean modern interior. I'm all for cheap eats but when I see a scuffed tatty place with lots of chipped plastic glasses and mangled flatware, I wonder what really goes on in the kitchen. The owners have taken an interest in ensuring that chipped items are banished, flatware is bent in the right places, and the furniture makes you enjoy spending your money and time here. As Steve C noted, this places does a bustling takeout book of business. During my short 20 minutes here, I saw no less than six customers take away their orders while the place was occupied by me and one other table. For fast fresh food with a flourish, saunter, skip, or sashay to the Stix. * Don't get all gaga thinking: "Ooh, that Square sounds like the cat's pajamas. Maybe we should meet Muffy there after croquet?" Its just a gussied up strip center anchored by a big supermarket on the edge of West U. Just being specific on the details. The food is very mediocre and bland. So why the three stars? They deliver to my work and the owner (well, I'm guessing he's the owner) was fast, efficient and funny. My entire office is in love with their fried rice, but it is just so bland! The funny thing is that you just watch them pour the soy sauce all over their dishes. Since I wasn't impresssed with their food last time, I went for something totally different--Kung Pao chicken. I got the huge dinner plate that came with a crab puff, egg roll and soup which was enough for lunch and dinner. The egg drop soup was pretty good--nice and yolky! The crab puff was okay but better at Kam's. The egg roll was a bit small but well battered. My chicken was sweet and not very spicy (those pepper symbols should be used correctly!) but not bad at all. They did throw in some veggies, though two pieces of broccoli isn't all that impressive. All in all, I know I'll be eating their food again since it is so close to work but I'm not overly impressed with the food. read more
