A quick internet and Yelp search told me that the things to get at The Cellar are the Greek gyro and the pizzas. I didn't want a whole pie just for myself, so I ordered the gyro. The Greek gyro was really good! It is lamb and beef in a pita, topped with tzatziki, lettuce, onion and tomato. All of the veggies were super fresh, and the pita was warm and pillowy. It's served with chips and a pickle. They actually have quite a few Greek or Mediterranean-adjacent items on the menu. One of the people in my group ordered the Black & Blue Salad, which is basically a salad with steak and bleu cheese on it, plus lots of vegetables. It was huge! She ate a lot of it, and it looked like she barely made a dent. When she put the leftovers in the to-go container, she almost needed two containers! It became a running joke that day and for a couple of days afterward about whether or not she actually finished that salad. This is also the location for the 6Pak Bottle Shop, which is basically a liquor store but intensely curated. They have a nice selection of craft beers and wine. There is also a bar downstairs, which I didn't have the pleasure of visiting. Another great thing about The Cellar is that they are open late! Sometimes until midnight, and sometimes until 2 a.m. I guess that makes sense, as they are located basically right across the street from Virginia Tech.

My sour apple martini was so good that that a second one was in front of me quickly. One of us ordered a full sandwich meal and that sandwich looked humongous and full of meat. We also ordered sides of curly fries. These were fried fresh. It's somewhat of a dark speakeasy vibe. The crowd was tame compared to some of the other bars down the street. We hope to try the full restaurant in our next visit.

Five out of seven got the fried chicken. Others the chili and meatloaf. A plate of biscuits and cornbread were placed on the table after drinks placed. The history of the tavern on the menu is worthy of your time. The owner, originally from Blacksburg moved from California to restore for his own home. Later opening the restaurant. His goal to keep the structure original and true to purpose as a tavern. The owner himself comes from a family of tavern proprietors. I digress too long! The FOOD ALREADY!!! Well as you have probably already guessed it was impressive and exceeded my expectations. Every main, every side was a home run. From the mash potatoes & gravy to the macaroni & cheese, backed apples and green beans, to the rarely found succotash. All fabulous! Only starter was ham biscuits which were good. Mains of chili and meatloaf strong. But it was the fried chicken that brings local and tourist alike in the door. The chicken was cooked up to perfection and deliciously moist The breading was exceptional as well with no dripping grease and a medium crispy finish. The only desert ordered was the brownie & ice-cream. So yummy! The owner Daniel checked in on us before departing which made our experience even more special. The Blacksburg Tavern is a Southwestern Virginia gem that's a must to dine at. Checkout was efficient and prices affordable for large quality dishes. This place is great. the best Chinese food in Blacksburg for take out. Now that being said I only ever order 2 things from this place the General Tsoa Chicken for myself and the Fried dumplings for my wife. These dishes are always well done and cheap for the portions you get. I am a chef and this is my go to place for quick cheap Chinese food. I have ordered their spare ribs one time and I would not suggest them. But I love this place and generally order here on average once a week. They are on my speed dial. I call when I start heading their way and by the time I pull in the food is ready. I live 2 minutes down the road. read more

I went to this place because of the high ratings of yelp but got really disappointed by its food. Maybe because they taste yummy for Americans, but not for me as a Chinese. The Ma-Po Tofu is totally Americanized and tastes without any spicy and flavor which is very important for this dish in Chinese. The hot soup is also weird, full of the flavor of old mysterious herb. I really can't stand it. Last, although these dishes look good on their surface, I still can't say it's a authentic Chinese Kitchen. Just another Americanized Chinese Kitchen. read more

The food is normally great here but I would abstain from delivery: dude showed up in a dirty truck with the back just stuffed full of trash. Was late by 30 minutes (they are less than 5 miles) and then said he forgot the silverware, went to his truck and handed me an unwrapped fork that he pulled from IDK where. read more

As with any fast food Chinese restaurant, don't expect the best service, but that's because there's a cultural difference in what is considered proper customer service. They are nice people and probably serve the best Chinese food in Blacksburg. Lunch special is a good deal. read more

Looking for a…read moreplace to eat after an upset with 419 West Restaurant for not having enough parking spaces to accommodate their booked customers, after canceling the reservation that I made through Open Table, I drove off to a tiny strip mall next door, and there I found this place called Szechuan Chinese Restaurant. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Szechuan Restaurant in South Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. As I was walking towards the restaurant after parking my car, since I hadn't had an opportunity to research it to find out if it was good, I asked one of their customers who was also headed that way and he replied: "After more than 40 years of being their customer, I haven't found a place with better Chinese food." What an outstanding live testimony to the place, I thought to myself. Then as I got closer, Their windows were displaying framed articles about the restaurant. Inside, the owner was seated at his open office located in front of the restaurant, and the walls around him were inundated with framed awards and photos related to the restaurant. The owner, very friendly and hospitable, greeted me, and explained how since Covid they no longer had table service. But you would look at the menu, order and pay there, and then the food would be taken to your table in take out containers by a young lady server. As I went through their beautiful and extensive menu, he was able to notice that I was not too familiar with many of the items on the menu, so he helped me by asking me some questions of my likes and providing some recommendations. I ended up ordering a Coke to drink. A Vegetable Spring Roll as appetizer, as well as a Scallop Roll from the Sushi Bar. And as my main entrée I ordered the Pork Szechuan Style with their Fried Rice. And for dessert they had only three options Cheesecake, Chocolate Cheesecake, or Donuts. I went for the Chinese Donuts because I always wanted to try them. After ordering and paying with my credit card, I went to their dining room to look for a table to sit at. I picked a booth next to a window to provide enough natural light to be able to photograph the food nicely. The server brought me a plastic bottle of coke with a styrofoam cup with ice. The dining room was very nice and had the most beautiful and elegant fish tank that I've ever seen in a restaurant. It's a pity that they hadn't return back to regular table service since Covid is now under control. While waiting for my food to be prepared, I walked over to the Sushi counter to watch the Sushi Chef prepare my Scallop Roll. I invite you to view my photographs and videos accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. Finally, the friendly young lady brought my food to my table on a tray which she placed on the table. Both her followed-up to see how I found the food and to see ifvI needed anything else. What can I say, the food was amazing! From the Sushi to the Pork in the Szechuan sauce, to the Spring Roll, and Fried Rice. By the time I ate the donuts they had cooled down and hardened and were a bit dry inside. While I was enjoying my meal, several customers stopped by to pick up their To Go orders that they had ordered by phone or through their website. Others came with the intention of eating in but when they found out the situation, they ordered for Take Out instead. And a family who came to eat in, left when they found out the dining situation. The dining experience is not the same eating out of plastic containers. It's like drinking wine out of a plastic cup is not the same as drinking it out of a Baccarat wine glass. I highly recommend that the owner return back to the normal way of operating a restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is much too beautiful and the food much too exquisite not to do so.

When I started eating it I first noticed that the sauce was not cooked well enough with the food items, the chicken was tasteless, the beef was tough, the shrimps and scallops were better but very few, and the broccoli were frozen broccoli and many were still cold in the dish. Then when I went to taste the Fried Rice that looked so good, it had a horrible taste. Like if the wok where they cooked it had been washed with dish soap but not rinsed well enough. That really got me. I stopped eating and left the restaurant. It was the worst Chinese Restaurant that I have ever eaten at. What a bad sensation. I hope you learned something from this review like I have, and though I don't like to write bad reviews, I feel obligated to do so because I don't want any others to go through the horrible dining experience that I went through at this restaurant.
