I took my mom to Chirp for Mother's Day lunch. Based on the website photos I was expecting a proper sit down restaurant with table service. That is not what Chirp is. They have seats. But you order at the front, pick up your own food, box it yourself when you are done, and discard your own trash. I was the server today. That should be noted upfront because the website does not exactly make that clear. That said, the food was good. I got a stir fry dish with beef, fries, tomatoes and platanos. Mama bear got a Spanish chaufa which is basically the Peruvian version of fried rice. She seemed to enjoy it. I also got a side of squash soup which was pretty good. We washed it all down with Jarritos, the Mexican soda. Solid choice. Now the restroom situation. Chirp does not have a public restroom. My mom was bothered by that and I could see her starting to make it a thing. I had to nip that in the bud. I get it, I understand, but that is not the hill I die on. No restroom, no worries. It is what it is. The cashier was nice. The food got me full quick. I brought some home for wifey since she is a fan of Spanish food too. Overall Chirp is fine for what it is. This was my second time here in about 6 years and I am convinced I tried their sandwich the first time . However the second time left a more lasting impression .I ended up eating it on the run as they were closing and found the only positive thing about the sandwich being the amount of chicken they packed into it . The toppings weren't evenly distributed at all and it was as though no care was taken to make the sandwich. Not even the sauce was spread evenly , so parts of it were quite dry . I mostly just detected an abundance of salt used for seasoning and very little flavor until I bit into the plantain . A pleasant surprise on a quiet Thursday, pre-holiday weekend. I was in the mood for something that wasn't a giant fast food chain (which is 90% of this area), and I'd noticed this little guy an avenue block away or so from my office. It's just far enough away from the chaos of MSG/Penn Station where it's not overloaded with tourists staring slack-jawed at the taxis and skyscrapers, and honestly probably a little too edgy for them anyway. Big selling point for me. I wandered in here around 1pm yesterday. Since it was the day before the 4th of July, it was pretty quiet - I'm sure most of their demo is the almighty office worker, many of whom were already presumably chilling out at the shore with their PBRs. A few people made comments within earshot that it was much less chaotic than usual, and given that there's a written disclaimer by the counter that customers should expect a 20-minute wait for the rice bowls during rush hour, I'm 100% planning to order ahead the next time I'm hankering for some Peruvian food. But on this particularly day I got lucky. There's probably about five or six tables in there, only one or two of which was occupied. Cute spot; looks pretty spiffy and given that they don't have a ton of space to play around with, it doesn't feel claustrophobic. Again, it WAS an abnormally quiet work day in the city. Maybe it feels exactly like Penn Station on a normal weekday. There were honestly a lot of options that looked intriguing. I'm not a huge rotisserie chicken person (I find bones distracting unless it's something more straight-forward like a turkey leg or ribs where you're eating off the bone versus around it, if that makes sense), which seems to be their big seller. I went with the chicken rice bowl, and opted for the accompanying Peruvian fried rice, featuring eggs and scallions. Really tasty, filling stuff - something more for the end of the week than the beginning. The inclusion of the eggs reminded me of a Thai dish, and there was definitely some spice to the proceedings, which I tend to measure in nose blows (two in this case). The chicken was flavorful and tender, and I'm assuming one of the big attributes of the rotisserie section as well. Solid portion; the only issue I had was a personal palate one - I'm not crazy about crunchy onions/scallions on a texture basis, though they're upfront about its inclusion. The women behind the counter were decently busy - they seemed to have a lot of to-go orders as well as the in-person customers like myself - but were personable and accommodating. I was expecting to have to wait a while just by virtue of the time of day, but I had my rice bowl within about three or four minutes, which was awesome. Wasn't feeling quite frisky enough to venture into the fried sides territory but I wouldn't be opposed to trying the tostadas or empanadas on a future visit. Absolutely adding this place to the midday rotation. Hopefully its more subtle location (I mean, as subtle as you're going to get on 34th and 9th) keeps the hordes at bay and limits the wait times going forward. read more

The chicken is tender and flavorful, and there's a generous pile of it - no wonder they give you a knife & fork, as you will need them! What a nice surprise for a work day lunch. Went to the almost Hudson Yards location. Was very busy but the line moved fast. Food took some time but was worth it! First, this is an affordable joint! You can get a well portioned lunch for well under $20. That's something today. The Food: We had a chicken fried rice which was good. The chicken excelled and the rice was well, good fried rice. However, I had the pork confit sandwich! Wow! This is the Peruvian national sandwich! Chirp has well represented Peru and its fine cuisine! The pork chicharron was super crispy and 'porky'.' The sweet potatoes crispy and to me mostly texture. But indispensable texture. The onion relish was nice and sharp cutting the fatty pork taste just right. Then the spicy mayonnaise! It's described as sriracha mayonnaise and I hope it's more bespoke than that, regardless it hit just right. Good spice, mayo texture and taste pulled everything together. The roll my only disappointment. A little too soft and it struggled to contain all the amazing ingredients without leakage. But I managed. Something a bit more crunchy or toasty. No offense to the Peruvians if the bread has significance. I needed a little more structure. However it didn't detract from my experience. I highly recommend this sandwich. It was actually very good! I ordered half a chicken and French fries with yuca fries. The chicken was moist and really flavorful! The fries and the fried yuca were also fresh, crispy, and hot. Love getting this place right before I get on a train or a bus! It is super easy and the portions are huge. The price is really good and makes me feel super full so I don't have the spend extra money on the train. They have options in which type of meat you want and nothing is too salty. They serve it with a hot sauce on the side. But it's not the same when it's not cooked with spice. And the heat level could be zero, but I really want flavor, and this was very lackluster. There's more egg than mushroom, it could just be called egg fried rice, then at least I'd know what I'm getting into beforehand. The staff were very nice, 5 stars. Pork Confit($12) was 5 stars. I've heard of chirp a few times and this was the time to finally try it after getting recommended it by 2 friends. I wanted the bowl but decided to just get the 1/2 chicken $12 while my friend got the 1/2 chicken with rice and beans for $16. I was a bit disappointed seeing it being pretty small but I enjoyed the taste. The skin is nicely flavored and the meat was tender. The green sauce they had was nice too. I feel like I wouldn't like the bowl as much because I didn't see any skin so it may not have as much flavor. Without the skin, the meat was not very flavorful at all. The price was not too bad but I think I'm a bit spoiled by growing up getting Costco rotisserie chicken for $6 for a while chicken. I enjoyed the chicken but honestly I don't think it's that special. For my two sides I chose brown rice and pinto beans. Everything mixed well along with their delicious green sauce that's not too spicy. It's how I like eating it. The brown rice wasn't the best but it's not a knock on them. Truth be told I always feel like brown rice is hit or miss. I don't think I ever had great brown rice. It wasn't an issue though. I would guess that the white rice tastes a lot better. In general I think most rices taste better than brown. The chicken can be dry and the flavor tends to be in the skin. The meat is tender and delicious. The beans were great and complimented the meal well. The sauce from the beans was much needed and perfect. There was a lot of food and it came out great. They had probably separated the portions but I mixed it all together. Everything mixed together elevated the bowl. My only complaints is that they don't have yellow rice.
