Love getting this place right before I get on a train or a bus! It is super easy and the portions are huge. The price is really good and makes me feel super full so I don't have the spend extra money on the train. They have options in which type of meat you want and nothing is too salty. I originally came here through a deal I saw on Seated. I love Peruvian food but usually go to my favorite spots when I am in Queens. Located right near Penn Station it was a great place to pick up dinner before going home. They have both indoor and outdoor seating available. The staff was very friendly and the food was very good. I ordered the Chirp Salad and the Peruvian Fried Rice. The salad was good but not as filling as I would have preferred. I wish they would put some more chicken in there. The grapes and candied walnuts really make the flavor pop out. The chicken fried rice was better. There was a strong mix of different ingredients present. So Chirp was my pregaming choice right before the Food and Wine Fest. I literally looked on the map and wanted to go to a place with drinks and chose this instead. A few minutes walk from Penn Station I started to remember that from a young age my dad lived in Newark and would always take me to this Peruvian restaurant that had hands down the best chicken and homemade fries I ever had. So of course anytime I see Peruvian anything I'm trying to recreate that flavor experience on site. Anyway it's close to a corner pizza shop and the front of the restaurant has a a covering with two tables for a kind of outdoor space. It seemed to be one of those places that people all order lunch from and you need to know the process. People where walking in and out between the 3 or 4 couple of tables where patrons where lunching and I wasn't sure where to order or who to ask at first. I think there is a sign out front but you basically order and can do so from your phone or with someone at the register and then pay and they pump out your order to stay or to go. I felt a bit rushed and the man in charge gave me this make up your mind look when i finally saw the menu. I also was totally confused as to what he meant by squash stew but took a chance and ordered it. I felt like they had limited drinks. I ordered a 1/4 chicken with rice and beans as the two sides a Pepsi and the stew. I decided to stay and was served on these metal style of platter/ bowls. I sat outside. This place is extremely busy and I guess out of knives. I was given two forks and a spoon which did the job and I did not enjoy the beans. Maybe they had fries and I should have went with that. The squash stew was new for me and a healthy choice and I loved it. I put it in the rice and did not eat the beans. It was filling and I sat people watching as I ate and passed the time waiting for a friend. I saw the man in charge again seated at one of the tables taking orders or doing business over the phone with his books and binders as I was leaving and thought. This is an interesting little tiny shop in the middle of midtown pumping out some interesting stuff. Maybe the food is better quality when they are less busy and it is not lunch time but I cannot complain. Did it match the flavor profile I was seeking no but it wasn't bad at all. 3 groups enjoyed lunch seating inside and outside around me and it was like a moment in time in the middle of a busy midtown block. This place pleasantly surprised me. For one, it's ridiculously close to the AMC theater at 34th Street. Seriously, it's half a block away. That's a blessing for my movie-loving heart. Secondly and most importantly, their food is really good. My friend got the 1/4 white-meat chicken with pinto beans and maduros. The chicken was decent, somewhat dry as white meat tends to be, but the green sauce (aji verde) remedied that. If green sauce is an option, always use it. Man alive were those maduros amazing. They were deliciously crispy with a perfectly slight char on the outside, and each bite was full of soft, sweet plantain goodness. The beans were fine but would've been even better with some rice. I got the Chirp chicken sandwich, which came with shredded rotisserie chicken, maduros, green sauce, honey mustard, lettuce, and tomato. This was one of the better sandwiches I've had in a while. The chicken was surprisingly juicy considering it was shredded, and the softness and sweetness of those plantains worked so ridiculously well with the sauces and meat. I'd highly recommend getting this. The perfect end to this meal was the passion fruit pie. I've been burned by almost all things passion fruit in the States, but this pie slice wonderfully encapsulated those sour, sweet, and tangy notes all wrapped up in a custard-like form (think the texture of pumpkin pie). The top was bruleed, so it probably would've been delicious fresh. Sadly, since these slices were sitting in the fridge, that layer was a little sad and droopy. No matter. That's because there was only a singular tomato slice in my sandwich. The bread was hard and burned around the edges. The plantains really saved the sandwich, as they added a nice sweet taste and soft texture. The service speed is fine. There is limited seating in the small restaurant. The decor has some nice little details like writing on a post in the middle of the restaurant and small plants on each table. Overall, Chirp is a fine place to go if you're just looking for a cheap and quick place for lunch. It's okay, but don't expect too much from this little place.
