I found Kausa to be fairly similar to the other nearby Peruvian place in Hell's Kitchen - Tumi. Both are lively with a bright neon decor. And like Tumi, the food here is very authentic Peruvian. My friend and I had their chaufa and pollo a la brasa and we were very satisfied. The chaufa was very rich in flavor and was just as good as thw mom and pop places I've eaten at in Queens. The roast chicken was just as good, juicy and was falling off the bone. The only reason I would not rate this place higher is that the portion size is small and the prices are higher than other places. The food is top quality though. read more

Everything tasted quite well made and of excellent quality. The oysters here are extremely fresh. I love Peruvian food and this place definitely did not disappoint. The seafood plate - corvina a lo macho was just out of this world good, the sauce definitely makes it, but the quality of the seafood is good too. Kausa is such an amazing little Peruvian Restaurant in Hells Kitchen. It's no-nonsense, unpretentious restaurant that delivers up some yummy food and drinks! I feel like Kausa is a hidden secret, as it's never super crowded. And the crowd you do see there mostly includes locals who know the deal. On our first visit, we sat at the bar and had yummy drinks (and were served by a super nice bartender who gave us the low down on all the best selections at Kausa). We ordered the Chicken meal, which was easily shareable for two. It featured yummy roasted chicken, rice & beans, avocado, salchipapa (fries mixed with sausage), and all the usual Peruvian sauces (verde sauce and ají amarillo). Everything was mouth-watering! An awesome find. We were hunting for new spot to order lunch from (at work) and someone suggested we could try Kausa. Our go to spot for Peruvian style rotisserie chicken was "Chirping Chicken", but they are very inconsistent (some times they were good, some times they were bad). Everyone (about 11 of us) was happy with their meal. I personally found that their food is actually better than our usual go to chicken spot. Why not 5 stars...? Well, I got a 1/2 chicken meal and I was sent 2 breasts. I guess some people would say that's a win... but, I am not a huge fan of chicken breast... even though theirs (or at least what I got from them that day) was better than average... the ONE breast that comes in a 1/2 chicken is more than plenty for me. read more

Kausa is one of those Peruvian restaurants I absolutely love coming back to. On this visit, my friend and I decided to challenge ourselves and ordered the octopus and the salmon with black ink sauce. Wow, both dishes were outstanding. My salmon was perfectly cooked and packed with just the right amount of flavor, while my friend's octopus she mentioned was a little bit on the salty side. The chicken was tasty, moist, and well-glazed with two dipping sauces. The papa huancaina were fresh, and perfectly cooked. The empanadas taste homemade with ground beef, a crispy exterior and a sweet tomato sauce. The chupe de camarones was really good with juicy shrimp, some vegetables, and a poached egg. My wife and I brought my mother-in-law for her introduction to Peruvian cuisine before a Broadway show. Colorful decorations and Latin pop music playing in the background make this a fun, casual restaurant that reminds me restaurants in Peru I first encountered lomo saltado in Peru and haven't found any in the States that compared. Kausa comes the closest with amazingly tender steak, crispy fries, and a bold flavored sauce. While a little light on the tomatoes, it is one of my favorite lomo saltado variations so far. For dessert, the alforjors were soft and filled with always delicious dulce de leche. The helado de lucma (lucma ice cream) made from the fruit lucma tastes naturally like a combination of butterscotch, caramel, and maple syrup. Unlike other ice creams, the lucuma provides a natural sweetness that is not overwhelming saccharine. I highly recommend trying it of you haven't had lucuma before. The staff were polite, friendly, and joyful even in the midst of holiday season crowds. They helped my mother-in-law choose a dish that she might like and she loved the parihuela sopas. read more

Wow! What a night at Kausa our first time there and we're already hooked gonna be regulars for sure! The vibe was so warm and our waitress Maria Pia was amazing super friendly and made us feel welcomed. She took time to explain all the dishes even showed us cool new stuff like this purple corn drink called chicha morada so refreshing and different we loved it! I've heard a lot about Kausa but today was my first time trying them out. I ordered a meal for takeout. They have several lunch specials which I considered but I ultimately went with the half chicken deal (a steal at $9- they give you a huge chunk!) and a side of rice and tostones. This came out to just under $25. I was a bit surprised that the price of the rice side was $6, but when I saw the portion size, it seemed a lot more reasonable. It's a whole container full. Likewise for the tostones. The tostones were really good too- crispy and not too greasy. The chicken came with two sauces (which I haven't tried yet)- a green one (cilantro based I believe) and an orange garlic-based one. The rotisserie chickwn was so juicy and well seasoned. It's one of my favorite things to order from Peruvian restaurants. Next time I need to try the Kausa (causa) (the namesake of the restaurant). It didn't really catch my eye but if it's as good as what I ordered, I'd be open to trying it! read more

Kausa was highly rated on google maps so decided to check it out after walking by so many times. Ordered the tuna ceviche and the macho. Had the worst experience here. First of all, we waited close to an hour for our food. Second, we saw that they've already had the prepared ceviche just sitting out and not being served to us for close to 50 mins. Then they proceeded to serve it to us and the fish became massively overcooked and tough cause it was sitting in the lime for ages. We had it replaced. They obliged. Ceviche was not great. I've had much better elsewhere. Skippable. Got the macho rice thing. This was actually pretty good. Big portion. Also asked for a pisco sour which never came. At that point, we were just annoyed after repeatedly following up on our order and being hangry and waiting for ages. Overall, while some of the food was great, the service was pretty horrible. Maybe it was a one off and we got unlucky, who knows. The ambience inside was also in need of an update. We all had coffee to start as it was freezing and windy today in NYC. The coffee is made 1 cup at a time with steamed milk. 12 raw oysters on the half shell. They were super fresh and paired well with the vinegar, lemon juice, and cocktail sauce. Jalen large portion comes with lightly fried fish, calamari, shrimp, Yucatan, and some pickle like garnished on the side with homemade tartar sauce. Very fresh and delicious. Fried perfectly. Paradilla an assortment of their grilled meats. Porkchop, spicy sausage, grilled beef, quarter of a chicken. Everything was grilled perfectly and seasoned well. Avocado salad was really good. Went well with the meats and seafood. We did not like the salad dressing( just not for us) French fries here are so good with varias textures. My favorite ones were the well done ones like eating chips. We had a salmon dish over what was like a Quinoa risotto. The flavors went well together. The salmon was a nice size portion. Maduros were nice and scrumptious. Steamed mixed vegetables ... perfectly done. Peruvian Ice Cream Birthday desserts. The staff is always amazing here. Today's star servers were Ignacio and Andres. I'm not usually one to choose a restaurant in the most touristy part of town but traveling with a friend who (is Peruvian) chose to eat dinner here. It feels more like a night club inside than somewhere you would sit down and eat dinner. We were sat immediately. Service was fairly quick but gradually got slower as the meal went on. The ceviche was great. Being pregnant we had to go with a ceviche with all well cooked seafood (so basically only shrimp). My main dish was less than. I ordered a risotto dish however the grain was simply rice. It lacked flavor and the rice was slightly undercooked. I did taste my friends dish and it seemed subpar to me as well.
