I made a reservation here for my birthday and it was confirmed, but when I arrived the restaurant was closed. There was a sign on the door saying the gas had been turned off, and I received no notice or cancellation ahead of time which was incredibly frustrating after going out of my way to get there in the cold. Afterward, I looked into their recent health inspection reports and found MULTIPLE VIOLATIONS, which raises additional concerns about the situation and closure reasons. Between the confirmed reservation, no communication, and what I found afterward, I personally wouldn't feel comfortable ever returning. I'd recommend others look into this as well before making plans. read more

The staff was very friendly and attentive; checking in throughout the time to see how everything was going and if anything else was needed. The food was DELICIOUS! Started with the pasteles, alcapurria, tostones & margaritas (frozen - 1 passion fruit and 1 mango). About halfway through the appetizers, the entrees came out. Chicken cutlets (fried to perfection), pepper steak (so tender and flavorful), both arroz con gandules, maduros and more tostones. The portions are very generous, so you can definitely share.. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, seasoned like you wouldn't believe, and truly flavorful. Wear your stretchy pants because you won't be able to stop eating. I ordered the chicken soup which I've had many times from here. It's excellent for the exception of my delivery yesterday. I was feeling under the weather and I knew to go to my favorite soup. Never coming back. Manager was rude, even suggested that if we didnt have enough money, we should pick somewhere else. Never been treated like this when we were looking to have a nice dinner with friends. They even replied if we really needed more water when we kindly asked for more for the table. Its your choice. I am sure I am not letting me treat this way again. You lost a recurrent client. Update: One thing that appears is that management lacks of understandinh is that people go out for many reasons, including good service. Reading management replies to several dozens of unsatisfied clients, it makes perfect sense why we were treated like this. Does not accept any feedback that is not 100% positive. Its very hard to receive a 5 stars in general, and even more, if there is any area of improvements. However, If you dont admit a challenge.and instead confront your clients, it will never be adressed. We all make mistakes, personally I make tons. The difference between this management and myself, is admitting my fault and working towards improving without criticizing those people that are not stating 5 stars review. In order to receive one like that, all has to be as good as possible. Its feels cocky to assume all clients should rate like that if any of the reasons why people go out for dinner is not met as expectations. I don't expect a response from management. I came with a group of friends early Friday. We had to wait a few more minutes because they were still not ready despite it being open time. We waited and were seated 8 minutes past the time. Staff seemed friendly but we had to keep asking for service even though there was no one yet or after a few more customers arrived. They had to clean our table and still mopped the floors. I was surprised that if they open at 2 pm, they don't arrived 1-2 hours prior to prep. There was a weird smell outside and inside. We thought it could have been NYC Sewer. So do t want to blame them. Ok now to the food. We had the Pernil Mofongo, pepper steak, alcapurrias, arepas with pernil, and chicharrón de pollo. Food was amazing we got a ton of food. So although they are pricy, it's valuable for the food and location. Everything tasted and looked great. Visited on a Friday evening around 6pm. Conveniently located right near the train station. Waitress was very attentive but almost to the point where we felt a little rushed. I had a virgin pina colada (dry January) which is not pictured-- however I really enjoyed it! The pepper steak was tender and delicious and so was the Mofongo. Such a cute place with good music. I'm on the fence still with this place. I want to give it 3 stars but then I'm like I like the atmosphere and I LOVE that they have $6 sangria all day and all night on the weekends. I had always wanted to check this spot out for that singular reason alone. We had stepped in here for a beer once eons ago on a week night. Popped in about two weeks ago and it was kind of crowded but not overly and we were about to sit down at the bar but the bartender and waitstaff said it was reserved and that all of the tables were going to be filled and reserved as well even though they were empty and there were like 4-5 empty seats at the bar. It was such a strange situation and I didn't ask questions. I was just dumbfounded and at a loss for words and walked out and went somewhere else nearby. Came back this past weekend and didn't have the same issue thankfully. We both enjoyed the red sangria. It packs a kick! No wonder it's a popular spot. They do play Latin music a little loud. The food is a little over-priced with having $30 something entrees (haven't tried it yet) but it is an eclectic menu of various interesting sounding dishes from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, etc. Will definitely check them out again! read more

The guacamole was good and we enjoyed it, but the arepitas were out of this world. So flavorful, our only complaint was only three small arepitas come in an order. The entrees are large portions and everyone really liked what they got. I ordered the ropa vieja which was massive and delicious. The portion of meat was beyond generous and the rice, beans and maduros that came with it were very tasty. We also enjoyed the yuca fries (the dipping sauce was really good). This is the real deal authentic Puerto Rican food!! It's not easy to find classic PR food as of late in NYC unless you go to the few remaining restaurants in El Barrio (East Harlem). Almost all restaurants are Dominican- although it's close, they don't have pasteles, or other typically Puerto Rican food. I been seeing this restaurant all over social media. My husband is Puerto Rican so I knew we had to come and check it out. We made reservations for a Thursday night and I'm glad we did since the restaurant is not very large and it was packed. We got there before 7pm so we took advantage of the drinks in the happy hour specials. The red sangria was not only very tasty but strong. We started with the arepita sliders and alcapurria. The arepas were good but not great however the alcapurria was delicious. My husband said it remind him what he used to have as a kid. For my entree I went with the churrasco mofongo and got to try the pernil with arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas). Both dishes were perfection. They were super flavorful and the portions are very generous. If you don't like garlic then this is not the place for you since everything here had tons of garlic which I loved. This restaurant is a gem and will definitely be coming back to try other items on their menu. read more

This is my second time trying mofongo. The first time I tried it, I got my mind blown....but that may have just been because it was my first time. I ordered the mofongo with pork. The pork was plentiful although a bit fatty but that is to be expected. The pork was tasty and very tender. The plantains were a little bit tasteless but that's why the gravy/broth comes in. I've had the gravy that was a bit tastier at the other spot I've been to but there was nothing wrong with this one. I was left feeling very very full but I managed to finish it. The biggest complaint I have is the price. It costs $26 excluding tax so it's roughly $30 after everything considered. It's a filling meal but it doesn't leave you feeling the absolute best because it feels like perhaps too much carbs and it's so thick. Everything I tasted was quite yummy. Mofongo w/ Pernil: Wow, this may be the best mofongo I've ever had! The mofongo had big chunks of fried plantains, rather than small bits. Crunch all around and some softness inside. Perfect against a generous amount of garlic sauce that made it a little wetter and a little softer. And wow, the pernil was bursting with flavor too. Each tender shred of pork had so much garlic and spices coming from it. The portion is huge too, so you'll likely have some leftovers. Ropa Vieja: Also full of saucy flavor. The beef was stewed very tender and stringy. Tasted great against the rice. The firm plantains helped cleanse the palate with sweetness between bites. The black beans were tasty, but felt like a kind of skimpy portion. Overall, the dish is solid portion size, but pales in comparison with gigantic mofongo. read more
