The restaurant was mostly empty the entire time we were there, which on a weeknight isn't necessarily a red flag, but it wasn't exactly reassuring either. We ordered enough to get a real read on the kitchen: five spice braised beef, mapo tofu with minced pork, Shanghai soup dumplings, house special fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce, salted egg yolk prawns, hot and sour soup, brown sugar sticky rice cake, and sizzling beef. Nine dishes is a fair sample size, and the verdict across almost all of them was the same word: fine. The mapo tofu was fine. Not bad, not memorable, just tofu and minced pork doing what mapo tofu does without any spark to it. The five spice braised beef and the sizzling beef were both forgettable in the way dishes are forgettable when nothing is technically wrong but nothing is right either. I couldn't tell you what distinguished either one an hour after eating them. The eggplant in garlic sauce came closest to good. The flavor was there for most of the bite, then it landed on a sweetness that felt out of balance, like the kitchen wanted dessert-eggplant instead of savory-eggplant. Close, but not quite. The salted egg yolk prawns were the low point. Something about the flavor was just off, not spoiled or unsafe, just wrong in a way that made the dish hard to finish. Salted egg yolk should be rich and a little funky in a good way. This wasn't that. The soup dumplings, fried rice, hot and sour soup, and sticky rice cake rounded things out without leaving much of an impression either way. Edible across the board. Nothing sent back, nothing requested again. For Broomfield, this is a perfectly serviceable Chinese option if you're not driving further into Denver proper for better Sichuan food. It is not a place I'd steer someone toward specifically. Three stars, and I would not prioritize coming back.
