I'm finally learning. After many a trip to the Chiu Quon bakery, I am finally learning what everything is. The good thing is that the staff behind the bakery cases are so nice and all I have to do is ask and they'll let me know what it is that I'm pointing at. I mean, its no secret that I'm not Vietnamese, so much of the goods there are a little new to me. Chances are it will contain rice flour, sweet bean paste or pork...I can deal with all of the aformentioned. Would you like your boa buns steamed or baked, pork and cabage or BBQ pork, chicken and veggies or egg and ham, chinese sausage or hotdog filled...they have it all. Almond cookies, walnut cookies, lotus seed cookies, puffed sponge cake, flakey apple turnovers, killer coconut tarts, it goes on and on. I'm still wondering whats inside the little banana leaf packages that are on top of the case and I don't venture into the cold case becuase I'm allergic to dairy, but for the most part, everything is good. I always leave Chiu Quon with a big box of goodies that cost me next to nothing. Each bun is 90 cents and they are quite filling. I only eat more than one bun at a time if I'm starved. The almond and walnut cookies are the size of your head and will run you about 60 cents. I can think of many bakeries that would laugh in your face if you dared to think that they would sell you a cookie for less than $2.50. The interior is not much to look at and be prepared to drive in circles looking for parking. If location and decor are not an issue for you, pop in Chiu Quon for cheap and good treats with a great selection of sweet and savory options. read more

I'm so glad to read so many good reviews of Chiu Quon Bakery. Warms my heart and makes me miss my old neighborhood. This bakery was a serious problem for me, and still would be if I hadn't moved, but I do regret that I can't walk 50 paces to get fresh buns these days. It's not the typical bakery that you can find on every corner. It's a bakery with many delights I bet some of you didn't even know existed. Steamed and baked buns filled with pork, Chinese sausage, ham, even breakfast-y buns with egg and cheese and other goodies. For the sweeties, they have rice cakes, moon cakes, cookies, bean paste buns, coconut buns/rolls.... These ladies work like machines. There are dozens of assembled boxes behind them for the rush and they will keep things moving. Yes, they can seem cold at times -- for which I do believe there is a secret code word to let them know you're "okay" -- but I believe if they see your face enough, they soften like the silkiest of butter. Besides, they are concentrating on getting you in, getting you what you want, and getting you out because there is always a line during peak times. Bakery aside, they even offer some savory, home-cooked items, some that you can find packaged over the counter, and some you can order if you'd like to sit a spell. It does get fairly cramped as it's a popular neighborhood spot; more often than not, there are a few regulars that like to camp out just to drink coffee and chew the fat. If you're a sweet-toothed-tiger or a savory-lipped-lion and happen to be prowling the neighborhood, for heaven's sake stop in. Try one of everything that sounds interesting. Update (2-29) I had to take a star away this morning. As much as I love the bao in this bakery...I don't love the mentality that I should be charged double because I'm white. Today I went in with my husband and they charged me double of what I normally pay. What's up with that? Where else can you go have breakfast for like $1.41????? I love this place. The red bean buns make my heart sing. Just the sweet smell of the pastry makes me want to run in and press my nose against the glass. LOL They even make some food to order inside. It's cute on weekends, there's a group of older men that sit there with their coffee's and talk story. I think they've been there forever ...should have seen the looks I got when I went in with my BF one morning all lovey dovey. I would loved to have understood the conversation! I like to pop in every couple of weeks and get some pastries for the house. They keep pretty well too (3-4 days) if they last that long! And you can't beat the price. read more

When we lived in Rogers Park, I would frequent this bakery for all my Chinese bakery cravings, especially their char siu bao. Since moving out to the burbs, I have made special trips into Uptown for groceries and stop by Chiu Quon just to purchase a dozen of these baos at a time among other favorite baked goods. They make solid traditional goods like egg tarts, red bean filled fried sesame balls, sponge cake, etc. However, yesterday I was extremely disappointed because they pulled a bait and switch when it came to my order of char siu bao. I am certain I was crystal clear in ordering a dozen char siu bao... and the lady there kept asking me if I wanted the ones with egg in it to which I replied NO I Do NOT WANT EGG - three times. If they didn't have any left, I would be fine had she told me that. I should have been skeptical when she rang me up and charged me about $7 for 6 baos (more than I was accustomed to). When I ate one today I discovered that she had sold me, yup, a dozen baos adulterated with egg and Chinese sausage. My impression is that she must have really wanted to get rid of them because maybe people weren't buying them (they just aren't as good as regular char siu baos) and thought she could pass em off on me... 'cause what am I going to do? Drive an hour back to argue? I've had a couple of disappointments in my last few visits there as it seems they have gone down in their selection of my favorites. It's not like I expect awesome customer service from a Chinese bakery... 'cause that's not a realistic expectation. I do, however, expect to order something and if told that they have it available that they actually sell me what I asked for. This last visit disappointed me enough to actually post this review. Not going to make the trip to Uptown for Chiu Quon anymore. I think I'll stick to the downtown one... I do better there and they seem more with it given they have considerably more competition in that 'hood from St. Anna's and others. read more

For $9: 1 red bean bun 1 taro bun 2 sesame red bean balls 1 helping turnip cake (warning: contains heavy dose of pork) 1 package of freshly baked rolls 1 large coffee I was a pretty happy kid swinging my bag o' baked booty as a practically skipped out the door in search of the nearest bench to lay out my loot. The best part of this was the sesame balls - perfectly oily, super fresh and dense with red bean filling. The red bean bun was exactly how it should be, and the price was a steal at 80 cents! The taro bun was a tad dull, and I had to toss the turnip cake as it contained pork BUT the bite I had was deliciously greasy! Avoid the coffee if you can, this is obviously not a place to buy coffee (it was instant) but I was desperate. The savory pastries all contain meat, but they looked downright tasty, I was tempted to eat hog again. There is a back room filled with old Chinese people having a ball. I mean, how bad can it be when you're eating Chinese pastries and drinking fresh soy milk on a Sunday morning? Good sign! Overall, this was a great Chicago Chinatown experience! Cash only. read more

While the Cermak Road Chinatown(s) boast up to 8 Chinese bakeries, there are less than half that many in Uptown's Argyle Street China/VietNam-town. The best of these is Chiu Quon (which is an outpost of the main bakery shop in the "main" Chinatown). Everyone has already praised their pastries and meat and veg-filled buns, which are excellent. But don't forget that if the line is too long to get into a dim-sum or pho noodle place nearby, you can grab a good bit of lunch at their sit-down tables. You may have to displace some of the old Chinese men nursing a cup of tea while watching Chinese T.V., but they'll never stand in the way of the owner getting your business. Ask for the one -sheet menu at the register and mark down the quantity of your order. It will then be brought to your table. The latest menu holds 18 choices, from rolled up rice noodle sheets filled with meat or shrimp to turnip or taro pie slices. There's pork sui mai and the big brick of sweet rice filled with small cuts of meat, wrapped in a banana leaf (the priciest item, at $2.80). Each order is just under $2.00 each. Ask your waitress for tea or other beverage, since these aren't shown on the menu. While you eat, you can watch the circus of customers coming for the pastry items in the glass cases. Of those pastries, my favorites for dessert would be either their custard tart or the airy, cone-shaped, just-slightly-sweet sponge cake. Both are less than $1. read more

I love how there are things in our life that connect us to different cultures. Music, art, and food. As soon as I entered Chiu Quon I was reminded of the little bakery I used to go to with my family in Holmen, WI. Seems strange that a Chinese bakery would bring back memories of a Norwegian bakery, but sometimes there isn't much that separate us from each other. Like the WI bakery, there are little old men sitting around a table talking and sharing a laugh with each other. And just like the WI bakery, Chiu Quon is filled with sweet and savory treats that will leave you wanting more. I usually get the bbq pork steamed buns, but last Sunday I decided to treat myself to a birthday breakfast treat...ham and cheese. I don't really know what the actual name of this item was seeing the sign was in Chinese and it just said ham and cheese in English, but my lord, was it good. Soft, sweet, and chewy bread with pieces of ham with melted cheddar cheese and green onions. YUM. I cant wait to go back and get another ham and cheese goody to go along with the steamed buns! I haven't even tasted the sweets yet! hmmmm guess I need to return soon, huh? I have a lot of love for Chiu Quon and not just because it has tasty treats and it is only 2 blocks away from my apartment. Balls and Buns *giggle* That's the only reason I stopped in. I was so hungry for some Sesame Balls and BBQ Pork Buns. I wanted to give them more stars, but I think their sister location in Chinatown is still my favorite. The steamed buns here looked good, but I was deceived. Instead of the soft white dough, it was quite hard and chewy. The filling (BBQ Pork, Chinese sausage and egg) was just OK. I had expected a lot more flavor. The baked BBQ Pork bun was just OK as well. Didn't seem as fresh as the ones I get at their Chinatown location. I'm glad I only got one instead of the half dozen or so I normally get to bring home. The Sesame Balls though were amazing. Those were definitely freshly made. The outer crust of had a bit of a crispness and the inside filling was a nice and soft red bean sweetness. I stop by here at least twice a week since I'm not too far. A tasty and cheap breakfast alternative when I'm running late since it is extremely close to the Argyle stop on the red line. Most buns are 75 cents. They have a wide selection of baked goods: BBQ pork, chicken, hot dog, ham & cheese, coconut, custard, etc. They also have some standard dim sum fare like pork dumplings and rice with chicken wrapped in lotus leaves. A great place to get dim sum if you don't have the actual time to sit in a restaurant and wait for the carts to roll by. I've never actually eaten at the few tables they have, I typically just run in and go. The ladies behind the counter are friendly, but quick. I appreciate that they do this since I'm usually about to jump on the train. They also have another location in Chinatown. Regardless of the endless bakeries on Argyle and in Chinatown, this is the one I frequent. read more

This bakery is definitely more modern. The interior is clean and organized and they do accept credit/debit card payments. Sesame balls here are good with generous fillings of red bean. The BBQ buns are highly recommended and can go fast. So go early or call ahead to order. read more

Nothing to complain about. I ordered the wrong pastry just because it looked like Maxim's coconut rolls, I was thinking, "this is probably what I want". The pastry had custard filling, rather than coconut, as the sign said, in English. Next time I will pay attention to the signs. The custard roll isn't bad, btw, its just not what I was looking for. As people have stated, it appears they have dim sum. Which...I'd have to be starving or offered a substantial amount of money to get into that scene. Chiu Quon has become my go-to place in Chicago for Chinese goodies. My family has been coming here for years, and not a whole lot has changed. The items that I consistently get are good and so cheap. First off, I highly recommend their steamed pork buns. For all you Wow Bao fans, these put theirs to shame! The dough is consistent......not too soft and not too chewy. The pork filling is nice combo of sweet and savory. They could stand to use a little more filing, but at $1.05 each, it would be wrong for me to complain. I also really like their "bo lo baau" which translates to pineapple bun in English. To give you a description, it's a large bun (tastes like a roll) but topped with a sweet, sugar cookie type crust. You can get these either plain or with a custard filling! I do occasionally get their egg tarts, which are average. For you dim sum fans out there, Chiu Quon also sells a lot of your favorite dim sum items (various dumplings, Chinese crepes, etc......). I've pretty much tried everything and give my approval. Lines can be out the door, especially on weekends, and service can be really spotty; however, you don't go to a Chinese bakery/restaurant expecting Alinea type of service. Chiu Quon is definitely a must try for those who appreciate different kinds of bakeries and budget eaters. Under $5 can get you a good lunch and snack for later! read more

I've been coming here ever since I was little when I didn't even know what Chicago was all about. I think the same lady has worked the register every single time I've been here. My mom loves the winter melon cakes, and I stop in to pick some up for her almost every time I go back to Michigan. They have a huge selection of pastries. I use to pick up moon cakes for my grandpa, too. I like the red bean pastries and the rice cakes myself. I've noticed that they have other food items that aren't baked goods here as well - I think lunch menu foods. The service is usually pretty quick. It's tough to not want to try everything. read more

Here's a great bakery for some of your needs that is pretty close by public transportation - parking isn't easy but at least, the Red Line is close by. We always stop by for some egg custard tarts and bbq pork buns. But one of my favorite things to get here is some of their dim sum items. You have to be pretty sure you know what you're getting though. One of my top things to get is the sticky rice with little hidden goodies (preserved egg, meat, etc) wrapped up with leaves in the shape of little pyramids. Yum! read more

And then a Chinese bakery just appeared as I was walking by! I am so glad my boyfriend lives near this Cantonese bakery. In our future, I see a lot of cheap breakfasts out of their ham and egg buns, desserts out of their sugary donuts and snacks out of their siu bao (with a variety of fillings). I just about swallowed my huge, sugar-tossed donut whole because it was that good. The BF picked up a BBQ pork and egg siu bao, in the steamed bun department. He liked the filling, I wasn't crazy about it so I'd order a different once next time for myself. We also got two ham and egg buns to save for the morning and this bag packed full of baked goodies didn't cost us more than a few bucks. I'm excited to try the dim sum too. read more

We like to come here after we eat pho to get some pastries to take home. We usually alwasy get some of the red bean or custard soft mochi cakes. Then we usually get some coconut buns or bbq pork buns. I had the coconut cocktail bun and it was filled a coconut custard which was tasty. We also like to get the soy milk and the dou hua (tofu pudding). This place is cheap and tasty. For 10 bucks you can have a bag full of pastries to take home and enjoy. read more

I wrote a glowing review of Wow Bao down on Jackson Street a few weeks ago because I went there when I was really, really hungry and their bao hit the spot. It's simple food and one of those concepts that makes one want to smack oneself on the forehead and wish they'd thought of it first... simple, cheap to make and people line up to git 'em. Well, obviously, Chiu Quon has been doing it long before Lettuce Entertain You conceived of their concept... and they're doing it better. Also, you get quite a bit more for the same money- in fact, the bao are at least twice the size. I had the bbq pork, and while I might be one of those naive white folk Izzy for some reason felt the need to condescendingly allude to, I thought it was pretty good. Sorry to disappoint you, Izzy, but I didn't leap for joy and break out in song upon taking the first bite. I think I showed remarkable restraint; you know how we are, when us white people get around ethnic food, apparently. Now that I know how I'm supposed to react, maybe next time I'll respond appropriately for christ's sake. My fantastic girlfriend surprised me with one of their almond cookies, which was quite good. Even though the ones served in restaurants have that overwhelming and artificial almond taste, I rather enjoy them. This was lighter, much bigger, more natural tasting, and all around better, just as I knew it would be. This is a great option if you're in the area and you're up for a snack as ppposed to a meal, and you have about two dollars in your pocket. You'll be full well until dinner time... Forget about all the other bakeries in Argyle - this is my go to place! The BBQ pork bun and coconut rolls are my favorite. Every now and then I'll get a slice of their fruit cake which is awesome as well. If you like tofu, you must try their tofu in sweet gingery sauce. It's soo good, I promise! Chi Quon is awesome! I found it by searching for "pork buns" on Yelp; maybe I was craving delicious pork buns, is that so wrong? At Chi Quon, it is oh so right. My first time was a recent Sunday afternoon; there was a line out the door, but I found that it moved just at the right pace so I could check out all the pastries and decide what to buy. I was with my SO and we each got a BBQ pork bun, then I loaded up with a bunch of red bean paste and lotus seed cakes and the SO got an egg custard (I say yuck to egg custard, but he loved it). We sat down at a (dirty, but oh well) table and chowed down on our pork buns and red bean cakes as soon as we had handed over the cash (like $8 for a HUGE haul). It's not the coziest, when there is a giant line, but that durn pork bun was so good that atmosphere was not on my mind at the time. I actually thought the service was really nice, though some yelpers seem to have had a different experience. I want to try all sorts of other stuff I saw and I really hope to make this a regular trip. The place is very convenient to the El - you can see it from the station. There are a number of small bakeries in the Argyle/Broadway area, but this one is the best. Every time I visit my parents in Michigan (where authentic Chinese food is a bit harder to come by), I'm almost required to visit this shop and order a slew of baked BBQ (char-siu) pork buns. They're amazing, huge, and only $.80 each. You'd be hard pressed to find better buns in Asia. If you like moon cakes, sesame buns, and sponge cakes, you'll be in heaven. And you won't find better prices anywhere. Don't expect great service if you don't speak Cantonese (seriously folks, if you go to any cheap Chinese restaurant you should expect a little attitude--I have a tendency to feel a little like a poser in them, and I'm Chinese, born in Asia), but the staff is never rude. They just aren't super-friendly and won't bend over backwards for you unless they feel like it. Chiu Quon Bakery has another location in Chinatown, and it's likewise good. But I like this one better for some reason, maybe just because of the familiarity I have with the place. read more

GREAT Asian Bakery This is one of those places my family and I HAVE to go to on a trip to Chicago. This little bakery proudly displays a large variety of baked goods. They range from very Asian to Americanized. Only downside is that they don't take cash. I usually get these favorites: - Coconut buns - Ham and Cheese Buns - Hot Dog Buns - BBQ Pork Buns - Sesame Balls - Package of white rice cakes (on top of display case) I've heard their sesame balls are stellar compared to other places. "Yummy...in my TUMMMMY! I've dropped in several times before just to get a few pastries, but now that I live 1 mile from Chinatown, I rarely come up to argyle anymore. HOWEVER I did stop in yesterday to pick up some steamed "bao", inspired by a recent visit to Wow Bao and learned that these "bao" are pleasing to my hubby's palate. I thought I would get something authentic instead. I bought six bao, they only offer two savory kinds: BBQ pork or Pork and Cabbage. Personally, my favorite is the Pork and Cabbage but I bought the bbq type also - Thank god because the hubby nukes some while I was away and said the cabbage one smelled funny so he put it back in the fridge AFTER he just nuked it. Who does that? Well, at least he didn't throw it out. One bun = $0.95 There are also two kinds of sweet buns: Lotus paste or custard (I love the custard ones, but only at dim sum) I would say, the quality is very very good. I've eaten bao's around the world and this one is GREAT! Just like off the streets of Shanghai! Buy a six pack, bring'em home. To heat up, cover with a damp paper towel and nuke it for one minute and you will have a hot and steamy asian bun, ready to eat!" read more

I was craving baked BBQ pork buns one day (yes I'm Asian and I'm from California) so I headed to Argyle to find some satisfaction. It looked like this bakery had the best Yelp reviews, so I made a beeline to this spot. I knew this place was good considering the long wait. The place is no nonsense. There are a few tables, but people usually take their goodies to go. I bought some pork buns and pineapple custard buns and headed home. The pork buns were good, but I've had better in California. There just wasn't enough meat inside. The pineapple custard bun also could have used more custard. Not sure if I need to adjust my Asian baked goods standards since I'm now in Chicago, but Chiu Quon was decent. However, I could name a handful of California bakeries that easily top this place. read more

This is my favorite bakery on Argyle for any standard Asian baked goods. Not a fancy cake or dessert, mind you - that is what La Patisserie P and its award winning pastry chef is for. But this is the perfect place for your baked Asian staples. My usual order: 2 sponge cakes, 4 BBQ pork buns, and 2 egg tarts, and then I'll usually pick something else that I hadn't tried before - last time was the red bean paste bun and now I think I am obligated to add this to my usual order. If my sister is with me we have to pick up sesame balls for her as well. I usually eat this stuff for breakfast, and it all usually lasts me a week unless my husband notices they are around - then it's gone in a couple of days. I like this bakery the best because I like the selection they have, and the flavors of the goods. Everything is super cheap, to boot. Compared to most of the other bakeries in this area, this place seems more cheery because it is well-lit, always crowded, and always has people hanging out. Sure, the owner isn't always the friendliest but I'm pretty sure it's because she doesn't speak English very well and she's tired from running her butt off all day. When the younger girls take my order they're always very courteous. Whenever I stop by and Chui Quon is closed, my heart sinks when I have go to Luck's or some other bakery nearby - I miss the brightly lit atmosphere and the aloof service, and the flavors are just not the same. read more

Chiu Quon carries a broad range of Chinese pastries, but I come here specifically for the steamed buns and bread. While their baked pastries are fine, I prefer the same baked pastries from La PatisserieP (located down the street) because they have a higher filling-to-bread ratio. La PatisserieP also carries more cakes, Swiss rolls, and other such Western-ish pastries. Bring cash and be prepared to wait in line. read more

When I want Chinese buns I go to two places in Argyle, and Chiu Quon is one of them. I don't go to have my mind blown, I go to find my inexpensive, safe and dependable snack - and I stock up so I can snack on more of them later! What irks me a little about the place is that they don't always have what I'm craving all the time - but that's life. Lately I've been craving more filling in my buns too (including from this place, at times) but everybody seems to be cutting back, and moreover the buns are kinda cheap, so you get what you pay for. Some of my personal go-to's (I haven't had their youtiao/yao tiu/crullers but on the weekends people buy dozens of them. It's amazing but also a disturbing amount of fried food to feed your family): - Po-tat (Portuguese-style egg tarts) - Ham sui gok (fried dumplings with shrimp and pork and stuff) - Ham & cheese - Ham & green onion Lastly - the mini egg tarts have a cookie crust which is really a step down from the flaky crust on the larger sized egg tarts. Skip them and get the big ones, they're way more worth your while. read more

These buns are EXACTLY what I wanted. This bakery is just like the Chinese bakeries down in Chinatown, and the buns are just as delicious and addicting. The coconut bun was sinfully good. I'm actually a little bit worried now that I've found this bakery so close to me...I might be here too often. Cash only, and they seem to really want exact change (the cashier was a little miffed that I didn't have change on me.) Had to come check this location out after going to Chiu Quon in Chinatown and enjoying a delicious almond cookie. It was early in the morning so I wanted something breakfasty and grabbed the ham and cheese and egg bun. Warmed it up in the microwave when I got home and it was tasty. The sweet bun wraps perfectly around the salty ham and egg. The service was fast and the lady who helped me was friendly. Although they have good BBQ pork buns and shumai buns that are cheaper than Patisserie P, their puto (rice cake) is always spoiled!!! Went over to have some pho with my sister in law and went to Chiu Quon Bakery for a sweet. My ex mom in law use to come home with coconut buns and pork buns so I wanted to venture out of the norm. I had their sesame ball with red bean paste. Holy moley! Effen delish. It wasn't at all stale tasting or anything. It was still warm, toasted sesame flavor on the outside with a good crispy bite, jumping right into that delicious middle with red bean goodness. I enjoyed it. Their coconut tart is tasty, flaky. Custard bun is perfectly done, goes well with coffee. My sister in law favored the custard tart too. All very inexpensive but yummy! read more
