Went to chives for the first time this evening. The atmosphere was incredible, the timing of the staff was perfect, very relaxed but attentive, the food was above and beyond what I was even imaging. I can't even remember the last time I finished a full plate of food and genuinely enjoyed it, but tonight I did! 10 out of 10 would recommend. read more

Had a very good lunch at Chives. I ordered the Bistro: a nice side salad, with maple/mustard dressing, tomato basil soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich bread was yummy and flavorful. I've been to Chives usually for lunch on and off over the past few years. My most recent dining experience was for dinner. With reservations we were placed in the back dining area. I'm not sure if this is where people with reservations are given preference or if the last few reservations are placed. In any case the dining area was awkward. The room was nice, but with only two tables filled in such a small room I felt the couple behind us were commenting on our conversation. When the third and largest table was seated this stopped being an issue, but until then it was awkward. The main dining area is very attractive. It's altogether relatively small, with a tiny bar area near the front that, on busy nights, can make it hard to enter/exit the restaurant. It's definitely a lovely, cozy atmosphere. The restaurant is always filled with beautiful suburban people complete with Louis Vuitton and Chanel bags. This makes for fun people watching, but can also be incredibly irksome. The menu changes fairly regularly I believe, but the options are by no means limited. The sandwiches have an extra something to make them stand out, as do the salads. Both my date and I enjoyed our dishes. I had an exceptional ravioli pasta dish which was great. I also really enjoyed one of the drink specials that was offered that evening. Price wise Chives is slightly more reasonable than Republic or Black & Tan downtown, but not inexpensive. Service was very good. Nothing that makes it stand out, which can obviously go either way. My biggest problem with Chives is it's location. It's north of the city, in a tiny (almost nonexistent) area. If you're not familiar with the area it can be difficult to find. There's little around it, although that can always change. The restaurant is a historic building which is very attractive. Perhaps its the location that helps give Chives its charm, but it's extremely inconvenient, even for someone living in the northwest part of the city, especially considering how many other great restaurants there are in the city. As others have stated Chives has a private Chef's table that can be booked for a 6 or 8 course meal for a group. While I have not yet had the opportunity to do this, it would be the one main reason that I make the extra effort to dine at Chives in the future. read more

Came here on a recommendation from a friend because she said sometimes some Packers players come here. I could care less about the players now the food was amazing. Very cozy place with great service. Only side note is that when they say a dish is a large plate, it's LARGE . Me and the other half ordered the steak fritte to share. I almost hate to write a review for Chives because we feel like it's one of our best kept secrets but since some of the Packer players have tweeted about it we may have to start sharing our favorite restaurant! My husband four years ago said he wanted to take me to Chicago to have some of the best food ever but I didn't have a thing in Chicago that came close to Chives food. Love that they offer small, medium and large plates as I think the misconception about Chives is that it's expensive but we have had so many good things off of all three options that we can testify that no matter the size or price everything is just delicious! I had the pleasure of enjoying the Chef's Table Saturday night at Chives. This restaraunt is one of my favorite places to go, the atmosphere, service, class and food are some of the best around! Our chef's table was romantic and cozy and all 6 courses were amazing! We started off with an oyster soup and a salad with a fried duck egg ontop, followed by salmon and steak filets and a wonderful lemon dessert. We were both highly impressed and it was one of the nicest dining expereinces I've ever had. We will definitely be back to do it again. read more

What a hidden gem! This charming little restaurant is located just outside of Green Bay (in the town of Suamico, just off Lineville, to be exact). Having grown up in the area I'm familiar with the glut of chain restaurants surrounding Lambeau Field: giant portions, bang-for-the buck, big on salt, low on taste. So what an absolute delight to find Chives as I was searching for an intimate venue to host my parents' anniversary dinner. Cindy, the owner, couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. The interior is warm and inviting, as you are greeted by a small cozy bar area and for that evening we used the back room, which isn't fully closed off but is slightly set apart for extra privacy. The best part, though, was definitely the culinary delights the Chives chefs served up! The french onion soup alone was so gooey and delicious with its caramelized onions...I do not know how they make it but my sister-in-law (who has traveled extensively) proclaimed it to be the best she had ever had. I chose the filet of beef and can safely say it may have been the most savory, tender filet I've had, which is quite a statement considering I live in the city of Chicago. I made my entire party sample it and everyone agreed it was melt-in-your-mouth good. And I must mention, while Chives certainly excelled at providing us a special evening and wonderful dinner, I would not hesitate to stop in for lunch or dinner on any other "ordinary" day. They feature a blackboard of daily fresh specials and a specific lunch menu, as well. Bottom line: in a city not exactly known for its culinary prowess, I am comforted to have found Chives to be at least one exception. read more

This restaurant is about a 15 minute drive outside of Green Bay but it's worth the time! Great atmosphere. The steaks, fritte (fries) and fish are fantastic. I had the opportunity to dine at Chives with a friend I had not seen in a long time. Both my time with her and my experience at the restaurant were wonderful. The restaurant is lovely, homey and quaint. There is a certain elegance that emanates from the decor and the staff as well. Chives is not stuffy just classy. The service was superb. I had a cocktail and she had red wine. The waiter was quite knowledgable and kept up with my friend the"oenophile". We started our meal with crab cakes. Three tasty little patties served with a roasted red pepper aoli. The crab flavor was pronounced, a rare find with crab cakes. We had the butternut squash ravioli with brown butter sauce and the salmon. When we asked the waiter for a recommendation he did not suggest the salmon. We ordered it anyway and it was somewhat lackluster. Lesson learned! The ravioli was excellent however. The pasta was al dente and the filling slightly sweet and quite delectable. We had chocolate cake for dessert. It was amazingly rich and creamy. This is no cheap date. With tip the bill came to $105. This is a special occasion destination. read more

Ate here a couple of weeks ago with my wife and some friends. It is located off the beaten path in an old, historical building for a great atmosphere. I had the Halibut with crispy mushrooms and asparagus. Everything was delicious. Server was attentive. This was our second time eating here. The first time we sat a the chef's table inside the kitchen itself. Food was great then, as well. Specials change regularly so there is always something new to try. Highly recommend. read more

We came here for the first time the week of our wedding with our parents, and had the most wonderful dinner. The service was just as fantastic as the food, and they in no way hurried us along. We ended up being the last people in the restaurant. There are lots of little nooks with tables that make it easy to have a group conversation while still feeling the ambiance of the restaurant. This is a really nice little restaurant in a suburb of Green Bay (those who actually live out there are more than welcome to correct me on location). A friend took me there last night, claiming it was one of his favorite restaurants. It's a fairly small place with nice ambience, a good wine selection, and really good food. We shared some appetizers - goat cheese and chicken dumplings (either fried or sauteed) with a spicy apricot sauce which was fantastic; white asparagus in a brown butter which was also fantastic; and mushroom bruschetta which was good enough for me to actually eat a piece, as I usually do not like mushrooms. Interestingly, my soup was French Onion a'la Thomas Keller, he of the French Laundry in California. I've never been and will probably never go, as most of that food looks way to cuisine-y for me, but the soup was outstanding. I don't know if chef Keller knows about this little place doing what I guess is his recipe, but either way it was a great little bowl of soup. My friend said the veal scallopini was very good but a little sweet. My pork tenderloin was well seasoned and the potato pancakes (latkes, basically) were nice sides on the plate, and the cinnamon applesauce was a nice chinky touch, but the pork was a tad overcooked, even though the very nice waiter said they cooked to medium. By then I was pretty stuffed anyway, so eating half of the entree was no loss for me. The wine selection is really affordable, with no wine I saw over $100. Still, three of us were able to enjoy a Justin Isosceles and a Silver Oak Alexandria, and the total bill for three with appetizers, soups/salads, entree's and desserts was $315 ex-tip. I went with a cheese platter, which was quite good, though not as artisinal as I'd hoped. Still, each bite of cheese got better with the sips of wine - funny how that works out. Overall, after coming off Hinterland Brewery, it's good to know there's good eating in Green Bay, as I'll probably be out there again in the future. read more

This place is incredible. My wife and I like to go to Chives for each of our birthday dinners. Everything we have ever ordered has been exquisite. Took the wife for an anniversary dinner thinking about having a special dinner and night out. When we arrived around 530pm there were no other customers besides us. The waitress took us way in a back room which I thought was strange but ok. She poured water for us and said our server will be out right away. We sat for 15 minutes, empty water glasses and never seen anyone. Two more customers were brought back near us and served drinks immediately. Still no service....we got up and left. For a place that cost as much as they do I would think service would be a priority. Now I see why the place was empty. Went to the Republic Chop House and was very happy with everything. read more

Love this place! Quaint out-of-the-way location 10 minutes North of Green Bay. Dimly lit, comfortable, and attractive ambience. Can be just a bit loud depending on the other diners but you can easily carry-on a private conversation. Have always enjoyed great service: friendly and efficient. Waters are poured immediately without asking. A nice selection of beer and wine. Delicious breads with whipped butter served prior to your entrée. Wonderful selection of high quality appetizers and main courses. Not a large menu but the best restaurants focus on quality, not quantity. Portion size is just-right; not enough for left-overs but enough to be filling (especially with an appetizer). Most importantly the food is well-prepared and delicious! Not your typical fare with a number of unique menu items but everyone can find something to their liking. Prices vary depending on the menu item but come prepared to spend a bit. This was my first time to Chives and I absolutely loved it. I was with a group of 8 and we shared the calamari and crab cakes...both were fantastic. Some of the best calamari I've ever had. I had the herb crusted cod for my entree and the flavor and presentation was great! Our waitress was pleasant and knowledgeable and our dinners were timed perfectly for our group. We have been here a few times now and each time the food was disappointing. We see such great reviews but have not enjoyed the food. Each time we ordered steak, the fillet and the other the hanger steak. Both times the food was almost cold, including the potatoes which had cold spots. So that makes me believe they were made earlier and warmed up. The server was very fake, almost rude about answering questions. We had food allergies and we inquired about a few questions and she was very annoyed. The desserts were excellent and the atmosphere is very nice. read more

Eating at Chives is worth the adventure of finding it in the charming suburb of Suamico, it is worth the price, and it is worth the possible wait. I love this place so much I had them cater my wedding- everyone said it was the BEST food they ever had at a wedding. I am still a bit sad I didn't get any leftovers ;) J.R bakes delicious bread, uses local produce and overall knows his stuff (and isn't afraid to tell you that). I always enjoy their ravioli and steak options. Order an old-fashioned if you really want to experience small town Wisconsin. Wonderful, off the beaten track place where we felt at home from the moment we walked in. I absolutely LOVE their smoked cedar appletini, and really everything on the drink menu is delicious. The food was probably very good but it was hard to truly appreciate it when the service was so bad. To top things off when the waitress made an error on our bill she treated us like it was our fault. If I pay $100 for dinner I expect the service to match the price. In hindsight my 10% tip was way too generous. This is a wonderful locally owned and operated restaurant. One would not expect to find such excellent cuisine in the northern suburbs of Green Bay, but JR and Cindy have done a great job with their little place. Many of the Packers players and staff eat here, especially because the patrons know to not pester them. (And if anyone does start to bother a player, one of the Chives' staff members is right there to intervene.) For a special treat, try the Chef''s Table in the kitchen (reservations required). It is very reasonably priced and you'll have a great experience. They also offer fun cooking classes, primarily on Saturdays; check the web site for more information.
