Love this place. Found it on Yelp about 4 or 5 yrs ago after a concert. I wanted something sweet and found it about a block away. Depending on the time, it can be very very busy. I've had the crepes, ice cream and creme brulee. Love them all. Every time I am in downtown SD I go to this place. Owners and staff are friendly. It's a little small so be prepared to stand or stand around to get a table. They are open until pretty late which is awesome if you have that sweet tooth late at night. The ice cream is good at this place, but our experience was terrible. Took us 20 minutes to find a parking spot and we still ended up having to park super far and walking for 15 minutes to this store. We didn't want to carry bags around so we left everything in the car and got only one credit card that we use for restaurants to pay for our ice cream. We NEVER had a problem using this card anywhere. We use it out of the country as well and never ever had an issue. We ordered a large ice cream and went to pay. They didn't accept that credit card. Now what to do? We parked so far away, and had small kids with us. My husband had to be in the airport in 30 minutes. We tried to use Apple Pay, or use a different credit card number with the phone, they didn't accept! They didn't work with us at all! They took the ice cream back. I was appalled by their service. So my friend and I stumbled into this place on NYE Day. The place had a "weird" vibe to it. Homely, but kind of in a weird way. I felt like everyone there was either working or a regular. Kids were running around and I could never really tell who was working there and who was just there. My friend got some special French? coffee. He said it was too bitter - but as I gather that is simply how they like to drink their coffee over there. The place was clean. It was OK but I much prefer my Gelato-Spot for cold goodies. Showed up at 10:24 for a late night snack. Probably not a great idea, but the prospect of a hot crepe sounded comforting. Unfortunately, they unplugged the crepe hot top and we were out of luck, darn. So we ate the creamy yummy gelato. The pictures tell it all. At least 31 flavors all bursting in flavors. Chocolat Cremerie is located in the middle of the Gas Lamp District and there's lots of entertainment and top notch restaurants. I gave 3 stars only because the server was a little annoyed with me asking for samples. But with so many flavors and my one and only chance in 31 flavors, I had to. We came for the gelato after dinner on a Saturday night, and the cafe was popping! There was a line to sit at one of the tables and there were a lot of guests. When you walk in, you are greeted with two huge cases of gelato with a bunch of flavors! I tried a few of their flavors, and I liked their fruit ones the best. They also have a variety of chocolate flavors, such as spicy chocolate, chocolate with orange, etc, but they were super sweet; it literally tasted like fudge! I decided on a small cantaloupe gelato and the flavor was interesting and I liked the natural sweetness. However, the texture was granular and not very smooth. Also, the gelato is pretty expensive; I paid about $5.50 for a small, and they didn't give a lot either. Also, the store is pretty dirty looking, in terms of appeal. The pastries didn't look very fresh and they were wrapped in food wrap. Updating to say the that owner did reach out and was very kind and asked if there was anything he could do which shows a huge amount of respect and we definitely appreciate that We were in this restaurant on Wednesday evening and it was a little busy but sort of dying down. The girl behind the counter, homely looking with brown hair and glasses, was pretty rude but I chalked it up to maybe she's tired of having a bad day. As we made our order the place cleared out. But every single table was just filthy in what was now an empty restaurant. It was gross. So I said "hey do you want to hand me a bar rag? I can go wipe our table down" and the girl says "of sure hold on a sec" so she walks to a table and picks up a plate. Just one. She goes to bring it to a buss table and then leaves everything else still on the table and starts doing busy work. So I say again after another minute of two in a completely empty restaurant "hey do you want to just hand me a rag?" And she looks at me and scowles and says "YOU NEED TO WAIT A MINUTE!" So we do. We keep waiting. And none of the tables are cleared yet. And someone walks in and she goes to take his order and I say "hey do you want to just give me the bar rag so we can sit down? I'm trying to make your life easier" and she sneers at me and says "sure you are ma'am" and then proceeds to make fun of us for the table we chose to sit at. When we ordered out food nobody told us it had to be to go, we were not informed the restaurant was closed, because it wasn't. It was still open for another hour at that point. Then while we're eating these guys walk in and are ordering ice cream and one of them asks for a sample and I hear her say super rudely "no we don't do that!" I was a bit alarmed at first but then drawn in by the delicious looking swirls of creamy gelato in the case. They had a variety of flavors: Nutella, cookies and cream, pumpkin, vanilla, tiramisu, etc. I got a small cup of the salted caramel and it was great -- creamy and sweet with small morsels of salt. I would give them a NEGATIVE 100 if I could for worst customer service! I made the mistake of placing an order with them minutes prior to their cutoff for a pick-me-up late night study snack for my youngest in college. I was using the GrubHub app as I have many many times. I had confirmation it was being prepared and would be delivered between 11:55 and 12:05 am. I kept watching to see any updates and suddenly at 11:41 pm I had an update the order was delayed and now would not be delivered till 12:30 - 12:40 am. I called the number in the app that was linked to the order at the restaurant and had the displeasure of speaking to "A" as she called herself. I had her repeat it and she said her name was "A." I asked if there was a manager I could speak to and was informed no. None around. So supposedly this place has no managers in the evenings? Seriously? I would say that was lie #1. I asked about my order and she proceeded to inform me she had no order. Then said I was calling the wrong place and should call the right place. I said this number was linked to The Chocolat Cremerie correct and that was where my order was placed with. She argued there was no order. I said I did it through GrubHub and could I give her my confirmation number. She got annoyed saying no order with them since 5 pm. Later that became no order with them since 6 om. So the supposed last order time was lie #2. Apparently "A" can not keep her lies straight so she continued to mix up the times she quoted me. I asked many times how my order was paid for and confirmed with GrubHub yet she had no order. I asked many times if I could give her my order #. This nasty lieing excuse for an employee argued with me saying no order. No order. There is no order and you need to call GrubHub. It's their problem. Have them fix it. NEVER did she ask if she could help resolve the issue. No this nasty little person (I can not in good conscious refer to her as a lady as she was not in the slightest) try and help the situation. Well I called GrubHub. At 11:46 pm and asked for a manager there since clearly there seemed to be an issue somewhere and "A" at the restaurant was adament that it was the fault of only GrubHub. While on hold at 11:47 a text alert popped up. Oh and it was a cancellation of my order. Per Mary at GrubHub this came directly from the restaurant itself. The same lieing restaurant who claimed they had no order yet immediately somehow were able to cancel an order when they didn't even have an order #. WOW! The sheer deceitfulness of this horrid person who calls herself "A" and has a very thick accent is appalling. Thanks to her horrid actions I was not able to order and surprise my son. Something I was trying to do as he had a LONG day at school and work and had not been able to study for a huge mid-term. So a special something delivered would have been perfect and this disgusting human being screwed it up. Yes, I am furious and I will never frequent this place or order from them again. There is NO excuse for lies and deceitful behavior in the service industry. I would rather spend 5 times as much to have service and honesty than this disgusting behavior. Shame on you Chocolat Cremery for having such worthless employees. I stoped by this place on my birthday Friday night, it was a cute little spot that had good desserts and one of the few places that didn't have a cover to get into. My friend had to use the restroom and as he was waiting at the bathroom door. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the owner accosted him and shouted for him to leave the restaurant for no reason. We believe that the owner judged him based on his physical appearance, being a latino male. My friend returned to the table visibly upset. I got up to talk to the owner and he switched up his attitude and behavior as to make it seem like my friend was overreacting and he has no clue as to what I was talking about. The next day I returned to follow up with the owner because this was something that really offended my pal who had already left town, unfortunately he wasn't there and the staff working wasn't any help, they wouldn't give me any contact information nor tell me when he was coming back. The look on the staffs face when I told them my friend had been harassed was a " ugh, not again" look. Clearly the owner has a bad attitude and after reading other reviews about this establishment there's definitely a pattern with whoever's running this place. A lot of toxic masculinity and blatant disrespect going on here. This manager that I spoke to the following morning couldn't even engage in an adult conversation, he just kept saying No No No, I don't know.. and the wait staff looked at me like they had seen a ghost, total deer in the headlights look on all their faces. Walking in there were two cases full of gelato, lots of flavors to choose from. The final case was full of different dessert treats. After sampling the coconut gelato I decided I had to have it. It was sweet and creamy, the bold flavor of coconut, and bits of coconut within. My only regret is that I got a single scoop. I should have gotten a double. After walking the Gaslamp area and having a few drinks, I needed some dessert, ice cream especially to bring my buzz down. I yelped around for something opened late night and came across Chocolat. Luckily they were open till midnight, as it was about 11:20 when we got there. The inside is a bit small, but spacious and clean. They have a lot of great selections to choose from on gelato. They also had a big list of savory and sweet crepes and a few sliced cakes on their display. I was glad that I got to sample a few, because some places only limit about 2. After trying a few, I already knew what I wanted. I got a 2 scoop in a cup with no cone, since I wanted to eat crepes too. The scoops are a generous portion, but they are pretty pricey. A bit more that what I'm used to in LA. However, it was one of the best tasting gelato's I've had so I can't complain. _Nutella Gelato. There was another name for this but I just remember and saw nutella and I was already in. If you are a chocolate lover, like myself, this is for you! It was creamy, decadent and rich but not too sweet. You really get that bold nutella/hazelnut flavor. _Pistachio Gelato. Another classic, Pistachio can be a hit or miss for me. I've had some that were so bright green, it was already unappealing, some are too sweet but this one was pretty spot in. The color was more of a deeper green (although I heard that it should not be green at all but more of a milky color) and they had a few pistachio nuts. Not too sweet and has a nice nutty flavor to it, which I love. _Strawberry & Nutella Crepe ($11.95) With so many great food in LA, I can only say 1 place is good for crepes. It is a skill form and you have to make sure the batter is real thin, almost paper like. They did a pretty darn good job here. What's even better is they are very generous with the nutella and fresh cut strawberries. They were out of whipped cream which was fine, but the powdered sugar, even though very minimal, sure does add a zing when dusted on top. This is always a must! The texture of the gelato here is so good. Almost silky/creamy and semi thick. My only complain, and this is on us as well since we came a bit close to closing time, is that the lady cashier was not that friendly. I understand that you are closing soon, but there was still a good 25 min left and It still takes time to close up and wrap everything up. The guy was nice and told us we can finish our crepes since they had to clean up but you can tell the girl wanted to tell him no.
