This is a very cool ice cream and crepe place in the heart of downtown San Diego. They have more stuff like panini too but man there is tons of ice cream flavors to try. After walking the Gaslamp area and having a few drinks, I needed some dessert, ice cream especially to bring my buzz down. I yelped around for something opened late night and came across Chocolat. Luckily they were open till midnight, as it was about 11:20 when we got there. The inside is a bit small, but spacious and clean. They have a lot of great selections to choose from on gelato. They also had a big list of savory and sweet crepes and a few sliced cakes on their display. I was glad that I got to sample a few, because some places only limit about 2. After trying a few, I already knew what I wanted. I got a 2 scoop in a cup with no cone, since I wanted to eat crepes too. The scoops are a generous portion, but they are pretty pricey. A bit more that what I'm used to in LA. However, it was one of the best tasting gelato's I've had so I can't complain. _Nutella Gelato. There was another name for this but I just remember and saw nutella and I was already in. If you are a chocolate lover, like myself, this is for you! It was creamy, decadent and rich but not too sweet. You really get that bold nutella/hazelnut flavor. _Pistachio Gelato. Another classic, Pistachio can be a hit or miss for me. I've had some that were so bright green, it was already unappealing, some are too sweet but this one was pretty spot in. The color was more of a deeper green (although I heard that it should not be green at all but more of a milky color) and they had a few pistachio nuts. Not too sweet and has a nice nutty flavor to it, which I love. _Strawberry & Nutella Crepe ($11.95) With so many great food in LA, I can only say 1 place is good for crepes. It is a skill form and you have to make sure the batter is real thin, almost paper like. They did a pretty darn good job here. What's even better is they are very generous with the nutella and fresh cut strawberries. They were out of whipped cream which was fine, but the powdered sugar, even though very minimal, sure does add a zing when dusted on top. This is always a must! The texture of the gelato here is so good. Almost silky/creamy and semi thick. My only complain, and this is on us as well since we came a bit close to closing time, is that the lady cashier was not that friendly. I understand that you are closing soon, but there was still a good 25 min left and It still takes time to close up and wrap everything up. The guy was nice and told us we can finish our crepes since they had to clean up but you can tell the girl wanted to tell him no. Lovely little spot! It was pretty busy around 8:30 on a Saturday night, but we were helped right away. They offered us samples of any flavors we wanted to try, and they did it with a smile. I went with a medium size, so I could get 2 flavors: Dark Chocolate and Pistachio. These flavors were amazing by themselves, but worked well eaten together, too. We had a large group, and another sweet employee pushed some tables together for us, which was so nice. We all loved our treats here, I just wish we tried some of the pastries as well. Went in during comic con weekend. I'm assuming that is why they didn't allow samples. This was the first time I got turned down for samples in a dessert cafe. There was a greeter at the door who offers you a menu. I was wanting some iced coffee, but they don't have that here. They offer a variety of foods though. There were crepes, breakfast dishes, gelato/desserts, baked goods, alcohol (beer/wine). I don't see many cafes that serve dessert and alcohol, different. I'm not a big fan of gelato but this gelato was really good! It was smooth and silky and milky and flavor was great! I got the espresso. There were espresso beans in the gelato as well. I got maybe 2-3 beans (but I was also sharing with my husband). The place has a lot of tables for couples and there was a family of 4-5 that sat around one table. Their desserts are good, but the reason why this place is getting 2 stars is because of the incredibly rude and unprofessional lady behind the counter serving gelato. She's the one with long braided hair acting like she's a 10 when she's clearly a 3 (she's full of herself). From our first interaction with her, we asked to sample 2 gelato flavors for my 5 year old, she didn't say one word and was rude. We ordered our desserts and when she served them to us, she practically threw the plate on the table. UNBELIEVABLY RUDE! She ruined our experience at this place. The gelato here really surprised me. I came here at around 9:30 pm and it was quite busy. I had a large group that got a lot of samples due to the large selection of flavors the establishment offers, and the staff was more than helpful. They were super friendly and very accommodating. I enjoyed the espresso gelato; meanwhile, my sister fell in love the vanilla gelato. The staff was also not shy with the portions. They stuffed so much gelato into the small cup that I was barely able to finish it! The atmosphere was very lively and inviting. Their gelato is the best anywhere! My personal favorite is the Kinder Bueno, which is a hazelnut flavor. Quite honestly, after I tasted this one, I don't try anything else haha it's unfortunate we live all the way in North County so either the Downtown or Hillcrest locations are too far for us, but whenever we are in the area, we try to stop by. I have tried their bruschetta a while back, but it's waaayyy overpriced, as with all their other foods, so I would really only stop for the gelato. I try to hit this fun spot every year during SDCC. They have good small plates, breakfast/brunch items, as well as gelato and house, made candies and desserts. They normally offer free samples of gelato flavors, but during Comic-Con they do not which I 100% understand, they would lose money if they did that. I wish the signage was easier to spot, but at least they are trying to notify patrons. They do have a self serve water station which is awesome, hydration is important. My only critique would be that the ordering process could be a little more clear. The staff is friendly and attentive and make sure you feel welcome and tended to. My husband and I happened across this cute little place over the weekend, and were pleasantly surprised at both the friendly service and the taste of the amazing desserts! They are located downtown and have tables out in the street right now (due to COVID). The other comment about the tables outside not being wiped down is accurate, which was a bit gross, but since COVID started I have been carrying wipes with me, so that didn't really bother me. Everything inside was clean and very quaint. The person taking our order was beyond helpful and went above and beyond by offering us waters and a little chocolate to taste. 4 stars simply for the Kinder Bueno (hazelnut nutella) gelato which is AMAZING and by far some of the best gelato I've tried. It was so so rich and creamy and at the same time somehow not overbearingly sweet. I also tried the pistachio which was good but just not even close to the hazelnut nutella. I wish I got to try even more of their flavors which all sound delicious. Some other stuff: -Service was aight. It was not busy at all but no one acknowledged me for at least a couple of minutes which was awkward when I was lingering in front of the gelato and trying to order. -Parking can be tough since it's a busy area. You might have to circle around and street park a block or two away. -Minor thing here but I was a bit let down by the presentation of the gelato. I was craving dessert after a dinner walk. Since I was downtown and this happened to be on my way to my car, I couldn't resist. I was glad the smells tempted me for I found a delicious spot to satisfy my sweet tooth. My husband and I went inside and the smell of chocolate and gelato persuaded us further to the counter. I have a new found liking for pistacio gelato. I got a double scoop in a bowl while my husband went wild and got a cheesecake gelato on top of a berry gelato. I have to say a single scoop would have sufficed as they are generous in their scoops. There's indoor seating and outdoor seating, as well as designated handicap tables for those who need it. We wanted to people watch so we sat outside on a rather cool evening to enjoy the fellow strollers enjoying an equally awesome evening. Never once did we feel rushed. My only thing to ask of the place is to provide larger spoons with their desserts. The small ones had my gelato melting before I could finish it. The crepes were served in a togo box wrapped in a plastic bag. We were planning to sit down and enjoy our treats in the establishment. So why would you wrap it without even asking!? Normally, I love this place. I come every week or so. Great ice cream and normally has great service. I went in earlier this evening and was behind one other person in line. My friend needed to use the bathroom and since we weren't served yet he asked the woman working there if he could. The woman immediately stopped him from going and said "restrooms are for customers only". Understandable. We told her that we were going to purchase ice cream but again, there was one other person in front of us. When my friend came back from the restroom, we were discussing flavors we wanted with my affagato and I couldn't decide between the toffee or Oreo cookie so I asked to sample both. The woman serving us said "we do not give out samples". I told her I was just here last week and I got a sample and you have sample spoons and a mini trash can for used spoons. She then said "sometimes people do not so right things when they ask for samples"... I told her "what not so good things do you think we'll do?" was she profiling a black man and Asian woman in sweats? How did she decide that we were going to do "not so right things". We decided to get my affagato at Ghirardelli. The last time I came in a different young woman (who let me sample flavors) actually commented on my sweats. So I'm not sure where the disconnect is but in my opinion this woman definitely seemed to be profiling us in some way. One star because the service was absolutely horrible. And this is literally my first one star review, having reviewed on Yelp for years. I'm usually lenient, but this was bad. We ordered the apple, walnut, and caramel crepe, but somehow she heard "banana" and made that for us. We told her it was the wrong order, but she said she repeated back to us our order and supposedly we confirmed it was banana - which isn't true. It's very much a "he-said, she-said" situation, but I'm sure we ordered what we wanted. It was pretty busy and she was attending to the cash register and got orders together as well, so I can see how she could have easily gotten the order wrong. But she refused to remake it for us, and we ended up having to eat that. But it's not like you can just take the banana out. The whole crepe tastes like banana once you cook it. I simply didn't like it. We also ordered a chocolate to try, but for some reason it took her 20 minutes to even remember to give it to us. And she only remembered because my boyfriend tried a few times to make eye contact with her, and then she got the idea. While I have enjoyed what I received both times I ordered some dessert from here for delivery, BOTH times they messed up my order. The gelato was delicious, but both orders I placed were either missing an entire item, missing optional extras I paid for, or were made using the wrong flavor. I especially liked the shake I got, but it took two orders for me to even try a second flavor of gelato, despite my first order including THREE. If a requested flavor is unavailable, I don't at all mind substitutions or cancellations, but you ABSOLUTELY MUST contact the customer, instead of providing them with a surprise change. Tasty desserts are nice, but if you can't even read what the customer is requesting, you aren't worth ordering from. While I don't believe this would be an issue visiting in person, between the location downtown being inconvenient and the current pandemic, I probably will never visit the store. I'm guessing this location has become complacent, getting away with inferior effort and attention, as they have become too used to serving drunks unable to notice their mistakes late at night in the gaslamp district. So y'all just lost my business, at least for a few years. Maybe you'll have it together by then. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I learned my lesson. read more

Found this place wandering the Gaslamp Quarter looking for lunch on a Saturday. At first I was going to go with one of the weekend brunch options, but found the Mozzarelle on the menu. Really nice selection, all tempting, but I went with the Napoleon - mozzarella, roasted zucchini, red peppers, portobello, with basil and balsamic. Just wonderful. A light lunch of a warm salad.
