My boyfriend was looking for a birthday gift for a friend on this sultry August afternoon and had the brilliant idea to go to Chocolate Secrets. I didn't know how brilliant it was until we actually went in. We were greeted by the very welcoming event manager Stevie, who (when we admitted it was our first time here) promptly gave us a sample of his favorite bonbon, the sea salt caramel. I thought I knew what good chocolate tasted like. I was wrong. This was, seriously, the best chocolate I've ever tasted. We got an assortment of bonbons with Stevie's assistance. THIS GUY IS A GEM, PEOPLE! He's friendly, knowledgeable, and personable. He helped pick out a great array of treats, then expertly gift-wrapped it, all the while making pleasant small talk and sharing random tidbits of choco-lore. Amazing find!!! If you're looking for breath taking jazz music and yummy desserts then you need to try chocolate secrets! I went on a Thursday night and it was a full house. The room was full of tables of couples, friends, and family! Right next door was a cafe that you can buy gelato, gourmet chocolates, cappuccinos, cheesecake and wine! It was nice to have so many options. We got the gelato and cheesecake. I would recommend the cheesecake. The music was sooo nice! Something about live music creates a magical ambiance! This a very romantic place to finish up a good date. Let me emphasize a GOOD date. Guys, don't take a girl here if the dinner didn't go well because you will be spending $2.90 for 1 piece of candy and if you buy her just one piece, you'll seem like a cheapskate. Don't say I didn't warn you. I decided to buy a box of 16 chocolates because I wanted to try a variety and if I had bought it separately, it would have been $46 instead of $40. So I figured why not. I was having a great date (thanks Paul H.!) and I wanted something sweet to take back home to nibble on for dessert. The salesperson allowed me to choose the flavors which I thought was awesome. Hooray for making my own decisions. The chocolates here are beautiful. They are hand painted and look very chic and impressive. Unfortunately, beauty is only skin deep for these chocolates. The flavors weren't as pronounced as I had hoped and they were a hit or miss. The bacon one didn't really taste like bacon although it did have the bacon chewiness inside it. I like the passion fruit one. The hazlenut dream was very creamy inside with a nice whole hazelnut inside. I didn't like the orange one at all. It was super pretty but a little too bitter for my liking. I haven't tried them all yet so I can't say they're all bad or all good. It's really a 50/50 ratio. For me, that ratio of good and bad warrants a rating of 3. I just can't say NO.....to chocolate! I was immediately drawn to this store when I first saw this place driving down Oaklawn. There are not many boutique chocolate stores here in Dallas, so I was extremely inclined to find one. So, my first visit was a result of my dying curiosity that proved itself worthy of my tastebuds. The chocolates are amazing here and are impressive to the eye when you come in....so delicately placed behind the glass case with so many choices, flavors, and assortments. OK so I will admit it right up front - I got there and wanted a glass (bottle?) of wine more than any chocolate in the place. But after I got that taken care of (buy a bottle, it's cheaper than two glasses) I was amazed at the selection of chocolates and truffles. The goodies are all within a glass case at the front counter (where you also order wine...I see a pattern here). It's like a bakery, with the shelves of chocolates and their names in rows. The chocolates are imported from France and local, so it's a great mix and the quality is super high. The best deal in the place is to just go for the pairing. It's worth it after one chocolate and two glasses of wine - and for that price you get four chocolates and two glasses. Take them home if you dont want them or give them to your neighbor's annoying dog... The ambiance of the place is boutique / cafe style, upscale but still casual enough to walk in there any time for a chocolate and some coffee. The name of this place caught my eye as I was driving by because it made me think of Victoria's Secret. (I guess connecting chocolate with lingerie is not too far of a stretch.) So I decided to go in and check it out. As you walk into Chocolate Secrets, it kinda looks like a boutique with a heavenly, glowing candy case in the middle of it. Though there is no lingerie in this boutique, they do sell all kinds of other things: candles, picture frames, wines, boxed chocolates (domestic and imported) and a variety of other items. At first I didn't even notice these items because I was so drawn to the chocolate aroma coming from the case. There was a woman working behind the counter, whom I assume is the owner, that has a vast knowledge of every single piece of chocolate. She explained the delicate process that was taken to create each perfect bite of chocolate and which wine would best compliment each chocolate. My suggestion is to ask the employees questions - they know their stuff! I was feeling overwhelmed and couldn't make a choice. She handed me a menu and I looked it over carefully. One candy case is displayed on one side of the menu and it has all French imported chocolates and their descriptions. One candy case is displayed on the other side of the menu and it has all the locally made chocolates. The French candies are about $3.50 a piece and they are small. So this is a very indulgent and refined treat, but it's delicious! I had a dark chocolate truffle that had edible gold! The local candies are much larger and cost about $2.50 a piece. Also very indulgent but so, so good! I had a dark chocolate coconut truffle that was simply decadent. Not gonna lie, I felt very snobby and a little foolish for spending about 7 bucks on 2 pieces of candy. But in this place, you get what you pay for. This is no Almond Joy at 7-Eleven. This is the real deal - hand made and with the freshest ingredients. On a special occasion this place is a great choice but, because of the expense, I wouldn't make it a regular choice. read more

I had the best Valentine's Day here tonight!! My boyfriend and I came in for some after-dinner espresso and music, not expecting the amazing experience we got! Spoiled birthday tea. I made reservations for afternoon tea for my birthday 2 months in advance and confirmed 3 days before the event. Despite this, Chocolate Secrets managed to lose the reservation, couldn't figure out how to recover from their error, gave me a litany of excuses, didn't apologize to me and the owner hasn't returned any of my calls. Once we figured out what happened and that we couldn't go anywhere else at the last minute and that the staff didn't know what to do, my party had to move tables together, put down linens, order wine, etc. to try to recover the event. We waited forever for our check. While the place looks cute, the team is seriously lacking in hospitality and customer service. read more

I don't really know where to begin concerning my experience at Chocolate Secrets. My fiance' and I decided to try this place out after having dinner one Friday night. When we walked in, around 8:30pm, there wasn't a seat or table for us to go to. Eventually, a nice lady decided to offer her table to us since she was about to leave, so we lucked up. No one greeted us or told us what was going on. We realized that we had to place our order in the next room in order to be served anything. It would have been nice to have someone tell us that instead of us sitting at the table for 15 minutes waiting for a server. I normally pick the wine we drink, so I decided to go up to the counter to order a cheese tray, with a bottle of Pinot Noir. While up there, the nice lady that offered her table to us stopped me because she wanted me to meet the owner. When introducing the owner to me, the owner ended up making a pretty snobbish comment to me saying, "Oh, I see you've met Mrs. Highland Park", then gave the woman a hug. I'm sorry, but does it look like I care about who Mrs. Highland Park is? Not only am I not into the prestigious group of the who's who of Highland Park, but I don't really care about seeing the owner of an establishment I chose to spend my evening at that decided the best way to speak to me was to suck up to probably one of the richest women in Dallas. I'm just a young professional trying to have a good time. I am not an older woman wanting to listen to an owner, whom I would think should be very proud to be the owner, tell me how much she adores and bows down to another woman that she feels is the queen of the town. I also learned recently they also serve sandwiches. I ordered a brie and ham sandwich and it was pretty decent! The only downside is parking can be difficult. Places like this are always a conflict for a male like me: I know it's designed for women, so I always feel like kind of a wuss for wanting to go there, still, I reconcile it with the fact that across the street is the Andretti Car Dealership where they sell fancy used cars. So I'm feeling too much like I should own a man-purse, I just meander over and look at the Maseratis. It works for me. On to the chocolate. There are some real positives here. They basically have two styles, which I admire: 1) Texas made: these are obviously made in Texas, big, honkin' chunks of chocolate and pretty good; 2) French made: these are--of course--smaller, and yummy and a bit more intense. You can really see the waist-line size difference in the proportions here. I'm a bigger fan of the French stuff. It's quite good, and more bang per ounce. However, some people want quantity and they have that two. In terms of how they taste, these go into the category of, 'how bad can chocolates really be?' I mean... they taste like chocolate with other stuff in them. Usually that's a winning combo. I wouldn't trek across a hot desert for them, but they are very good. Further, the atmosphere in there is great. It's sort of laid back, European and sophisticated. I got a coffee there once that wasn't bad either. If you're like me, you've never understood why some women are so passionate about chocolate. I've tried excellent chocolate and while I can appreciate a good truffle or a 70% cacao single origin dark chocolate, it's never really done anything for me. But this review is not about me or you, it's about keeping the wonderful ladies in our lives happy. Because their happiness equals your happiness. Chocolate Secrets is a blend of a cafe, wine bar, chocolate bar, and small trinket shop all rolled into one. There are two sitting areas. The one to the left of the chocolate bar is a bit more casual, but the room to the right is very cozy. I particularly like the cushioned benches in the wine alcove where you can play games and admire the bottles of wines that line the side. The evening I went there were two guys playing the guitar. They even took requests and played some django. The chocolate is definitely the main draw. There is a refrigerated showcase of French and domestic chocolates. The Fauchon chocolates will cost you half your piggy bank, but the domestic truffles are very good and more reasonably priced. The wines are also reasonably priced and they actually have a good selection. You can do a wine flight with chocolates. This is definitely a great date place or an intimate gathering spot with a few friends (who love chocolate and/or wine). Parking isn't exactly plentiful, but I haven't had any problems nabbing a space. Your only problem will be dragging your lady friend away from the counter. read more

They have absolutely FINE chocolates that are the perfect combinations of spices and flavors. These may be the most decadent chocolates in the area. And they are gorgeous as well. The chocolates here are excellent! This is my standard 'get out of the doghouse/impress people at work' place (also a great after dinner spot). The store well deserves it multi-year 'best chocolate indulgence' from the Dallas Observer. About half of the chocolates are locally made, another half are imported from France. All are rich and decadent. My favorite are the tortues, Chocolate Secret's version of a turtle: nuts, chocolate and caramel mixed together. The owner, Pam is friendly and adventurous- she hosts Thursday night French lessons and has wine that pairs well with chocolate. And she always manages to staff her store with beautiful people, all fitting with the elegant Uptown atmosphere. Oh sweet Jesus. This place is fantastic. Now, I've seen this place for a long time, I just never stopped by. Then I was on a date, and was like... ya know what? I want to see what this place has going on. I was in jeans and a t-shirt, so was kind of expecting to be out of place. Didn't matter... The staff was uber friendly and I enjoyed some great conversation with the gentleman behind the counter as he thoroughly explained what everything was, the tastes, the pairings with wine, etc. He's VERY knowledgeable about the product. He even told me which products were made on site, and which were shipped in. The price is average for the chocolate. If you've ever had Godiva or similar, it's about like that. A bit expensive ($14 for 4 pieces), but TOTALLY worth it. As far as the music side goes? I like the fact that it's segregated. They have a dining area with a couple little games, an ice cream bar, and the chocolate case on one side, and on the other side is a wine room where they usually have someone playing jazz music on the weekends at least. It's not great jazz... it's more like the jazz your mom would play at home because she wanted to make it big "back in the day" but then had you and that ruined all her plans. Honestly, the jazz wasn't horrible. It makes for nice background music. But it didn't blow me away. So overall? Chocolate Secrets is my happy place. During the day the natural light floods in through the huge windows and just lift your mood. It's my favorite study spot, because of the fantastic coffee, soothing music and free wifi. At night the place transforms into a place out of a fairy tale. The live jazz music sets the tone. The dim lights, candles, and roses set the mood. It's perfect for escaping the world and get lost in a chocolate bliss. Now, ambiance aside the chocolate is something spectacular. It's way better than Kate's, or Dude, Sweet. Some of my favorite pieces are the Strawberry Margarita, Ancho Chile, and the elusive toffee (must try if it's in stock). Here's the best part... Wow, this place is amazing. We stopped in on a Saturday night after eating out at another place. We arrived around 8:15pm on a Saturday night and unfortunately, the place was packed and we had to wait in line for about 15 minutes. But it was definitely worth it. There was a jazz band playing and the volume was just right. I had a peanut butter cup and a glass of wine and my husband had a milk almond torture and a cappuccino. From my understand, everything in this cute little shop is handmade, and so far, they are all pretty darn good. I picked a few truffles to go, and the woman at the counter gave each truffle its own wrapping and put it in the box nicely. Also topped it off with a pretty ribbon. Before I left home to California, I stopped by this place one more time. When I came home, the truffles were pretty much thrown in the box. They had all melted together, Also, the box was too small to hold the amount of truffles I had gotten. I was severely disappointed. So, they lost a star for my review here. TIP: my favorite is the Peanut Butter and Jelly Truffle and the Absinthe. Also, the Mango bourbon sorbet is pretty darn good. read more

Turd :) The chocolate ice cream I tasted was great, they were out of pistachio though. I ended up getting 3 macarons, not macaroons, which the rude girl incorrectly corrected me on. Good chocolates but watch out for double charges. The employee told me my card didn't work and swiped it again. Both charges went through and when I called they acted like there was no way to get my money back. I also went into the shop and same thing, stood there for 20 min to be told they text their boss. In the end I had to file a dispute with my bank to get the double charge reversed. Very disappointed that they couldn't do a simple return after showing them a double charge on my account. read more

I went into the store, I did not receive a single hello. There was no instruction on what to do or how to order. After sitting down for 20 minutes, we went up to the register and found out they weren't serving bread or lunch. They proceeded to ignore my mom who was making a large purchase, and we were there for over an hour and a half, just waiting for the purchase to be complete. Something needs to be fixed. read more
