We just moved to Kalamazoo and this is one of the first things my daughter said we HAD to explore. I am so glad we did - it's delicious! Walk in and get inspired - there are plenty of teas (I loved the chocolate mole tea), coffee, desserts, CHOCOLATE (a whole case!), and my daughter's favorite, bubble tea. You can sit outside in warmer weather - there's a lovely deck, right by a brook. But inside is cozy - just like a coffeeshop should be - but with the added pleasure of TEA! Great lattes and even better tea selection. My go to is the spicy chai latte with almond milk. I only wish that there was a better way to navigate the loose leaf teas. Perhaps a flavor guide of some sort, so I don't have to trial and error purchase teas to find out what I like. read more

This is a good coffeehouse. It is a great place to sit and chat with friends or to do some work. There confections are some of the best in town and they have a huge selection of tea. I am usually obsessed with food and they don't have much on the menu. What they do have is simple but priced as such. They jazz up their sandwiches with flavored mayos; my favorite is the pesto mayo. What a FABULOUS, quaint little place! I have gotten tea as a gift, finally came in to sit and enjoy something ! I walked in and the smell was delicious! After looking over the amazing menu, I picked the Gilligans Island! And my daughter got the mint hot chocolate! Then we ordered this chocolate bar thing I forgot the name of, chocolate, caramel, pecans! Mmmm shared it and it was so good!! I just loved my drink, and my daughter said the mint hot chocolate was so yummy! They have such a cute little set up! Tables and chairs off to the side, a little music playing, the girls behind the counter brought it to our table for us in super cute little cups! We enjoyed ourselves very much! They have tons of tea for sale, you can go get a baggie and fill up whatever flavor you want with how much you want! Chocolatea is exactly as advertised. Every available space had something intriguing at look at, the staff were pleasant, and the drink options were too numerous. I don't drink tea that often (coffee is my addiction) and I really shouldn't get near any displays of chocolate (because if I have one piece, I'll have one hundred). But I do enjoy all types of mate and I do allow myself one bubble tea a year. This time, I had a Pina Colada Bubble Tea. I sat outside on the deck and read while my girl had a perm done at one of the dozen hair stylists that are stationed on the nearby Garden Lane. As the holidays approach I remember that it was nearly a year ago that I reached out to Chocolatea via email for help with a last-minute gift purchase. Their response was so helpful that it turned me into a loyal customer to this day. I stop in about once a month to purchase loose leaf black tea from their extensive collection. Our favorites are Russian Caravan, Italian Bergamot, Black & Orange and Pineapple Mango. I fill and weigh my own bags at a self-help station in the store corner. Each time I also get a small bag of something new to try. Today it was Gunpowder green tea. The experience is always pleasant and the staff is very friendly. In addition, they offer a customer loyalty card that typically earns me $5 off my next purchase. That is always a nice perk to look forward to whenever I return. read more

So after the Yelp event, the family and I stayed around long enough to let my mother, S, and my niece take a walk around Chocolatea for themselves, and they saw exactly what I did- a wonderful little shop that has a little something for everybody who wants to stop in. Among other things, this place sells loose tea, tea implements like teapots, infusers, mugs, hand-made chocolates, as well as having a selection of hot and cold teas and coffee drinks, as well as some sandwiches and pastries. I'd already picked up a few things, but S and my mother both needed a pick-me-up and went with lattes with an extra shot, and my niece got a macaroon out of the case-which she then gave to S after I pulled out the butterfly-frosted cookie I'd bought her as a surprise. Everything tasted just plain amazing- my niece was all smiles over the cookie (she called it both "pretty" and "yummy"), S loved the macaroon, and the lattes were both proclaimed to be even better than any we've ever gotten at Starbucks-not to mention they were both pretty high-octane (I was buzzing after one good sip of S's latte). This place even has a great place to sit and enjoy your drink- an amazingly wonderful view of the Portage Creek off their small deck, complete with small tables and comfy chairs where you can simply sit and watch the world go by. The view here is great, and if you're patient, you might even see a turtle or something splash down into the creek. Granted, there's no drive-through, and the shop is a good way down South Westnedge, but if you have a need for a pick-me-up, skip Starbucks for once and give this place an honest try. You'll spend about the same amount of time in line, about the same amount in cash, but you'll come out with a better drink, you'll be helping out an amazing local business, and you might just come out of it with a new favorite local coffee place like we did! White Peach is probably the best tea in the entire world. If you're looking for a place to go to try different teas, look no further. They probably have more than 50 different teas at one time. Endless chocolate options, and the chocolate is really good! I frequently get my loved ones chocolate from here and they're never disappointed. Great selection for tea cups and tea pots. It's locally owned and operated. It sits on Portage Creek and if you sit outside in the summer, it's very relaxing. Great place to catch up with a friend or enjoy a book. read more

They offer an assortment of packaged and freshly baked chocolate and goodies, coffees, and teas. AND THEIR TEAS --- yo, they are outta control. I sipped on two that I regretfully forgot to purchase in bulk. First, the Moroccan Spice -- damn, it changed my life. I absolutely loved this place. Coffee and dessert one afternoon and they did not disappoint. Candies, teas, coffees, light foods and desserts leave you wide eyed on what to try first. I wanted to return the next morning to try some of their quiche, but much to my disappointment it didnt work out. Either way, next time I'm in town, I plan on stopping in to enjoy another coffee and then some while relaxing inside or on their outside patio with the little stream running below. This is a pretty cool little place. I did not like the jam filled macaron but the almond and pistachio ones were very good. The rasberry puree chocolate from the case looked fancy but wasn't special, not worth the price. The hot chocolate tastes like sweet milk with almost no real chocolate taste, so that was not great. The owner was nice and said she gets her items from mostly local places. The younger staff member had no idea where any of it came from and the owner said she uses many different vendors. It is uncomfortable asking where every single thing came from. Just the few things I asked about were from different places. People like local places so I would put a sign in there saying where the things come from so they know. People seem to like this place and I will stop in again to try some other things, but work on that hot chocolate. Also, if the patio is not open yet please put a sign on the door. I walked outside and got locked out and you cannot get to the lot from there. It is warm enough now many days that people may try to go out there. read more

So compared to places like Biggby this place is a fresh treat. On top of the specialty coffees they have a fantastic selection of bulk teas which are always being rotated because they sell so much of it. I visited here as my daughter lived in Kalamazoo and said it was a quaint little coffee place so I had to try it. The people that waited on us were very nice and I would def go pack. I love coming here for a cup of tea and a tasty treat from their dessert case. I don't think there is anything you can go wrong with as far as the desserts. They also brew their tea very well. It is consistently done the way it should be. The place is nice and cozy too. You can sit all by yourself and feel comfortable or bring a friend for some catching up time. My daughter would eat her weight in chocolates if she could and has loved everything she has gotten from the case. When I went in the fall their pumpkin cake/bar was delicious and a HUGE portion. Okay, so my review is based on coffee and chocolate - haven't had the tea yet. I finally visited this great little shop this week and went back a few days later... really I was in the area... I didn't make a special trip. I will admit that I was fantasizing about the dark caramel with sea salt in between my visits, however. I have not found many places in Kalamazoo with good coffee. Good coffee at reasonable prices is almost non-existent. Chocolatea has good coffee at a reasonable price. I'm not a coffee snob - I'll drink whatever is around, but I do appreciate quality when I can get it. Especially when I can also afford a chocolate to go with it! Maybe they should call it Chococafetea. Okay, maybe not. But they could. Service was great. Friendly. Lots of tables, a couple couches and a lovely little patio next to Portage Creek. This place is a gem. It goes without saying that if you are a tea-lover, you need to check this place out. They have a huge selection of loose-leaf teas, all lining the walls in glass jars. If you're not quite sure what kind of tea you want, they will help you pick something. I have to admit that I am not a tea-drinker. But at Chocolatea, I finally found a tea I enjoyed drinking! Mango green tea, who would have thought. They also have a small selection of coffee beverages. Let me just say that they are VERY well prepared. The coffee drinks taste really, really good. Easily some of the best in the area. And of course, they have a wide selection of chocolate treats and other baked goods. It's all absolutely delicious. And the baked goods are served in a pretty generous way. I asked for a lemon bar and I think I got the equivalent of four normal-sized bars. Staff has always been friendly and helpful too. I asked my Aunt while I was visiting Portage from Philadelphia if there was anywhere I could get some good tea. She recommended I check out Chocolatea as it was what I was looking for. This local business is nestled in a small shopping center near the city of Portage municipal buildings, and the store is well laid out with merchandise, teas, and customer seating. The teas are displayed on the walls, and include low priced standards and more expensive exotics, but nothing really appears to be "overpriced." The tea selection is incredible, and I've had a bunch of different flavors during my visit. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and seem to be excited to work here. Winter has truly been a cold one to remember this year, so my appreciation for this little piece of heaven is increased ten-fold as a result. Just yesterday I got to be THE "Beth C.," the wonderful person us Kalamazooans get to call our Yelp Community Ambassador and I dunno how she knew, but she did somehow that this would be the perfect place to meet. As my "partner in crime" ordered a basic latte and shuffled off to a corner to write his masterpieces, Beth swung me around to show me the delightful tea-filled cubbies throughout Chocolatea. There were black teas, and hearbal teas, and white teas and green teas, and rooibos, and beautiful pots and smiling faces, and really the only kind of place you want to be in the dead of winter. I was just overwhelmed with the choices available, so I decided to look to the stars - or rather- the menu right above the cash register to find a drink. I figured there would be some magical combination of tea and other sweet additions that would allow me to free my mind of the traps too many choices seem to set. Being a total HP nerd there's a drink called ButterBrew and my first thought was BUTTERBEER- come on folx, you know what I am talking about, and I decided that this is what I had to have. Beth kindly obliged, a lovely human she is. I won't tell you what's in it, so as to not ruin the surprise, but just go and give it a try. As for the other delights within this lovely space, there's quite a bit to eat in terms of desserts and little treats. This is very much a café, where if you're not starving, but you could do with a bite, this is the perfect place to get it. *whispers* They even have coffee... *mind blows* I feel like I saw this place at it's best, a beautiful, wintry scene accompanied by a huge green teapotm but inside was a warm bunch of smiles, chunky scarves and in general happy people. That being said, I realized that space can get pretty tight, so it's best to have a Plan B or Plan C even, so you have a place to enjoy the hot cups of goodness you might've bought. I love local tea shops that provide exceptional service and quality. Chocolatea is a great place to come and relax in solitude or with friends. My go to drink is a large pot of freshly brewed tea. They have a nice selection of loose leaf teas to choose from ranging from green to black and oolong to roobios (and any more). You pay the same amount of money regardless of the type of tea you choose so I will usually try and pick a more expensive tea to try as I would be less likely to buy it without trying it first. This trip I chose the Jasmine Pearls green tea and was not disappointed. Here's a tip for new tea drinkers - when you get a pot of tea they keep the leaves so that you're able to re-brew them at no additional charge. Some teas re-brew better than others but most are good at least 2x (in my opinion). Some oolongs are good for 3x and more. In addition to the nice selection of teas they also have one of the best selections of "tea gear" in the area. Tea pots, cups, brewing equipment, and decorative plating. Chocolatea has a nice outside seating area for the 4.5 days a year the weather is actually nice in Michigan. It's not an overly large shop but I've never had a hard time finding an open seat. For the true tea snobs, the loose leaf tea quality is good but not great at chocolatea. I'm not advocating Teavana but I've found their tea quality is a step above chocolatea. read more
