This is a small-owned family run restaurant that has spectacular food! The service is very laid back & almost feels like you're in someone's house. The waitress helped us narrow down our food selections since we practically wanted everything LOL. The Kimchi tofu soup is my favorite version in the area. It has a rich, deep flavor and an extra, mystery, pickled veg floating in there that makes it interesting. We also got the spicy pork bulgogi, but we ordered it "not spicy," and they did a great job modifying it so our kiddo could it eat it too. There's another restaurant that serves our favorite bulgogi, but this version was fine. The banchan sides are tasty. The kimchi is rich with deep flavor, likely homemade there, and the best I've had around. I enjoy the zucchini side as well. I think they are under new ownership. They have even less sides than before. They don't have the dried seaweed or the apple salad. They have kimchi, pickled radish, some sweet pickled cucumber, potato and bean sprouts. The bean sprouts were very salty to me. I thought that the side dishes were pretty good but was sad about the discontinued ones. Also, it seems like you might not be able to get a second serving of the side dishes unlike before. The utensils are in a box on the table. I liked how they had the utensils not public before. The water cups are now metal instead of plastic. The same with the side dish dish ware. The rice was purple due to little purple beans that was in the rice. I am still a little sad they don't have the stone rice anymore that automatically came with the soup. I had the soup and it was just like I remember mostly, but still good. The top of the soup had some broth on it which was interesting but didn't change the flavor. I wish they sold tteokbokki. Man so glad we found this hidden gem in downtown Chandler. Located in a runned down strip mall, the food here definitely hits the spot. The decor is simple with a line of bowls displayed by the wall. We got seated immediately. Our host appeared to be the owner hardly smiled and took our order rather rudely. May be she was just having a bad day or something. Anyways we got the Son Tofu Kimchi Soup with Seafood pancakes. It took a while for the food to come but damn it was worth the wait. That Tofu soup was one of the best Korean stew I have ever had. The tofu was soft and jiggly. The broth was packed with flavors, thick and rich with kimchi, and pork. Loved the rice. The combo hit the spot. My heart was full! The pancake was doughy but cooked through. I can tell the banchan was fresh. God the cucumber and cabbage kimchi was so so good! The price was bit higher compared to other Korean BBQ joints in the valley. But goodness the food was delicious. The service could've been better. Really kind waiter and family run restaurant! Came on a Saturday for lunch and the restaurant was maybe 75% full. Decor and food felt very homey and cozy. We ordered the seafood pancake, beef bulgogi, and ox bone soup with beef brisket. The ox bone soup was my fave - piping hot nice thick soup with glass noodles perfectly cooked and some lean brisket. Note: doesn't come salted so you need to add salt to your desired level yourself. The soup is filled with collagen which is great for your skin! The seafood pancake and bulgogi left more to be desired. Unfortunately the pancake was too thick and doughy for our liking and not much seafood. The bulgogi was a little dry and overdone. Dishes do come with rice and unlimited banchan - just wish the side dishes had more variety. I do want to try the mackerel if we ever return. Stopped in a Monday evening. Probably one of the few people in here so no wait and good service. Don't think I've had Korean food really, but friend is Korean and helped us order. Got Seolleongtang, Bibim Naengmyeon, and Kimchi Pancake. Personally I enjoyed it all, but it was my first time really eating all of this so my opinion might not be as good as my friend's. The kimchi pancake was an appetizer, and my friend said it was thicker than most and not as crunchy, but it was good. I wanted to try makgeoli so we had some here as well which was really good. The soup was the best thing we had. My friend was very impressed by it. It had a very clean initial taste and then the strong beef bone taste came afterwards. It is common for soups like this to be unsalted and the menu says so. So you can adjust the salt level to your liking, but very good. The spicy noodles were ok. The ban chan surprisingly wasn't that good/nothing to write home about. All in all a very good meal. I see a lot of reviews about portions. It might depend on what you get. My friend said this was the best Korean food she's had in the area, but really the soup carried the rating. For all of this plus makgeoli, around $70. Service was faster than when last team's management just had two guys running around for 15+ tables, but still a touch slow (perhaps due to grand opening and learning the workflows?) now it's about 3-4 people and food took about 30-40 min to come out. Have been coming here 8+ years from the other side of the valley. This was the spot for holidays, birthdays and when you wanted to treat yourself or get a good full meal. Under the new owners the first thing you notice is the menu has been reduced. The next thing you notice is the prices have gone up by $5 per item in some cases. The worst part is every item we had has changed and not for the better. Ingredients we loved were missing, the rice was changed and the rice and bone broth I used to have included was not given. Meat in my dish was subbed out for a lower quality ground meat and most of the good veggies were barely there and overall tasteless. The kimchi which is the base of most of the dishes is also different so the Kimchi tofu soup was also not as good. Banchans that used to come out earlier now came out when the rest of the meal which would be ok, we preferred snacking on them while you waited. However the recipe had also changed on the banchan and the daikon was no longer shredded and was now giant chunks along with other items changed or missing. I'm on my final month of pregnancy and have been craving for Korean food. I found Chodang while googling Korean restaurants and thought to try it out. We went on Friday night at 6pm and the restaurant was not busy. Just enough patrons inside to feel like you didn't choose the wrong restaurant. We ordered bulgogi, short ribs, tofu beef soup and fried dumplings. Food came out promptly along with the side dishes. The bulgogi was really good, plentiful and marinated well but not soaked. The short ribs were really rubbery however. My husband and I sent it back as it was well over $20 for the dish and so hard to get through one piece of short rib. The tofu soup was delicious. Would definitely get that dish again. Finally, the dumplings were just standard dumplings. Nothing to write home about. Cleanliness of bathrooms have been my pain points in recent reviews. Chodang's bathroom was pretty outdated, dirty and toilet paper/ hand towels were not replenished. When I took my 3 year old to the bathroom, the first thing she said was "this bathroom is really dirty". Doesn't take much for a toddler to recognize it as well. Definitely having to dock some points off for this. Service was good. The young man and young woman serving us were polite and courteous. Overall, an okay experience for me at Chodang. We went towards the end of lunch (around 1:30) on a Saturday and there was no wait. The menu had a lot of variety, and we ultimately ordered a pork sambab and the seafood tofu soup. - seafood tofu soup (4.5/5) had good consistency in the broth and the tofu was very soft!
