For lunch we had the goat cheese salad, the pumpkin hummus with pickled vegetables, and the soup of the day, vegetable beef. Holy cow, everything was yummy. Dinner we had the Osso Bucco (OMG I wanted to lick the plate!) and The Doc sandwich with sweet potato fries. Really good!! This is a GEM in downtown Butler. We came half way through a 40 mile bike ride on the Freeport-Butler trail. Start with the drinks: freshly made lemonade, limeade, or house sweet tea then flavored with muddled spices. We got strawberry basil lemonade, blackberry mint lemonade and jalapeño, habanero, chili limeade. I'm not usually a fan of spicy drinks, but the jalapeño limeade was amazing! For appetizers we got arancini Osso Bucco. Wow. Deep fried risotto with Pork inside--delicious. We also had a very tasty goat and roasted beet salad and the Seitan shawarma wrap. Cool place in downtown Butler. We rarely venture to Butler, but did this time just to try this place. It gets great reviews. It was worth the drive. It's an eclectic place inside, playing the auto chop shop theme up with mechanics lights as table lighting, gas signs, etc. they have an open kitchen that you can watch the folks make your meal. Nice menu. I wanted a sandwich and my wife wanted a dinner, both of us were able to get what we wanted. Seem to have some unique tales on favorites. Not often you see a duck Reuben. Nice soup selection and I started with a cup of cheeseburger soup. Tastes, well like a cheeseburger. My wife had a nice salad with her meal. I ordered the buttermilk chicken sandwich with onion straws. My only negative was that the straws were so finely cut they were awkward to eat, but they tasted good. My wife had a half chicken and risotto. My sand which was huge. I ate a portion of it and finished my wife's chicken. I liked the chicken I think more than she did. She finished with a slice of homemade ho ho cake that she seemed to enjoy. All the staff seemed very friendly, our server was very kind. Finding a restaurant with vegan options in rural Western Pennsylvania is not the easiest. There is Chinese and Thai dishes of course, but those are primarily take-out spots, not for dining in. The one place that I have found with delicious options is The Chop Shop. The Seitan Shawarma is fantastic. I like to get it with the sweet potato fries. The dish is completely vegan, like me :-) There is also the Hummus Wrap, Lentil Burger, and the Tempeh Gyro is also vegan if you 86 the tzatziki. If I were simply vegetarian, extra tzatziki please. The staff is also friendly. Bryant in the open kitchen is the man. He always makes a little side of meat for my little Pomeranian, Hercules, that often dines with me. The servers also always bring him a little to-go cup of water to sit on the floor for him, always without even asking. The décor and ambience is fun and inviting. It's an exposed brick muscle car garage meets art studio vibe with good tunes playing. It's also not too bright. It's a pet peeve of mine when a restaurant has the lights turned up. I should be relaxed, not interrogated. While I am on the subject, no neon lights either. Neon signs are fine. If there is one improvement that could be made, it is that they would sell booze, but it is Pennsylvania after all. Liquor licenses are scarce. PS: Try the flavored iced teas as well. read more

Simply amazing food. You have to try the Poutine Pot roast appetizer. Killer! The homemade basil pesto salad dressing is good enough to drink. The staff is very friendly and attentive. They work as a team, so no table goes wanting. There is some kind of evil genius coming up with the menu items here, because they are just that good. I really enjoyed the chop shop visit. I like how you are able to seat yourself and it is pretty quickly thereafter you are greeted with a smile from one of the wait staff. leave it to yelp to help you find something in a unknown area that turns out to be a gem. I landed on the fried chicken sandwich that comes with coleslaw on top and another horse radish type of sauce that was delicious. The sandwich was cooked fresh' I know this because when I bit into it it almost burned off my tongue. So to say that is to say once your food comes out please know it is made to order and blow it because it will definitely be hot! This was really good to know! It seems like restaurants are getting further and further away from making fresh meals:) The onion fries were really good too I forgot how much I like them. I added a picture on Yelp so that everyone could see what they look like. First service is top notch! All the waitresses work together. Don't see this everyday. Way to go Chop Shop! Now the food is amazing! Ordered the Tater Tot Roast Beef Poutine! I don't even have words to describe how delicious this was. The gravy was the perfect amount to not make the wonderfully crispy tater tots mushy. All topped with cheese. OMG! Thankfully, we shared, but it would've made a great entree. The basil pesto vinaigrette is a must for your salad. Absolutely phenomenal. And yes, the sandwiches the Go a Round and a flatbread chicken sandwich (can't remember the names). The au jus was simply the best I've had. Most of the time I won't use au jus cause it's just too salty. But, you could drink this au jus with no complaints. The chicken was equally as amazing and delicious! "Soup du jour" done well is my personal thermometer as to a restaurant's quality & creativity and Chop Shop's has never once served one to me that wasn't an "OMG" experience. What an amazing find! We loved everything about this place. I respect that the hostess didn't seat us right away because the kitchen needed to catch up. Our server, Lindsay was incredible. She gave us great recommendations and her timing was incredible- not too pushy, but right there when we needed something. We had the pretzel appetizer as well as the Osso Buco rice balls. They also have great lemonade-limeade flavors that were very creative. I had the cheeseburger soup and a clementine cashew salad. We also had the pork burger (I got to taste it and it was outstanding) and the Italian sausage ravioli. My small salad was huge. The presentation of the dishes was great also. First time in Butler, PA.. a layover in between sites on an exploration weekend. Stayed in town and took a walk to someplace close to eat. What a find!!! Word of caution to those who like a little spirit with their dinner.. this is a BYOB. But you can stop next door and grab a to go cup of anything you want at The Brick House or go the the Butler Brewing Co a few steps away on the corner. On to dinner.. We had the Hummus plate with pickled vegetables! Hummus was a charred corn, pepper and garlic - really good. The pickled veg was sugar snap peas and parsnips. What?!? Never had and was surprisingly delicious! My husband had the Sea Scallops. Beautifully presented and there was nothing left on the plate. And he ALWAYS leaves something. A testament to how good it was. I had the special - Prime Rib. It said 12oz but looked like a 21oz! Also very delicious and cooked to the perfection temperature. Service was spot on, very friendly and helpful. Everyone looked like they enjoyed their job, helping each other, smiling and truly just a fun atmosphere to be on for a dinner out. read more

A couple of years ago, my cousin who lived in Butler recommended that I eat at the Chop Shop, but this past weekend was my first visit to the restaurant. Chop Shop is a casual restaurant in downtown Butler, and its menu includes appetizers, flatbreads, soups, salads, burgers and other sandwiches, entrees, desserts, and beverages. My husband called the restaurant for a to-go order, and the employee who answered told us that the kitchen was understaffed, so the menu was limited, and the wait for pickup would be about 1 hour and 15 minutes. One of the menu items that my husband wanted to order was not available, but we placed an order anyway. When we visited the restaurant to pick up the food, the seating hostess told us that our food would be brought out in several minutes, and she made friendly conversation with us. Plastic utensils were included, so we could eat the food in our hotel room. The total price was $45 plus a tip. Here are my reviews for the food: Tater tot poutine - 3 stars - Dozens of tater tots were baked perfectly. The pot roast on top tasted very good. Unfortunately, the cheese curds were skimpy and congealed/hardened. I would have preferred that the cheese be gooey and cover the tater tots. Steak - 5 stars - The sierra steak was cooked medium as I had requested, and the chef cut it into pieces so that I would not struggle with using my plastic fork. The seasoning was tasty. House salad - 4 stars - The salad contained fresh mixed greens, tomatoes, grilled corn, feta cheese, avocado, and lemon poppy seed vinaigrette. Risotto - 3 stars - The risotto contained roasted corn and was cooked so it was neither hard nor soggy. It tasted slightly salty to me. Pork sandwich - 4 stars - This sandwich contained pulled pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, and chipotle mayonnaise. My husband described the sandwich as "good" and said, "I like it." It was accompanied by a side of French fries, and they tasted good and crispy. Paula's oatmeal cream pies - 3 stars - The cream pie was certainly a higher quality that Little Debbie's but tasted perhaps a little too sweet for my tastebuds. read more

This place is a staple of Butler and I've enjoyed it every single time I go. The staff is extremely kind, and their food tastes so great. The only reason I'm doing 4/5 stars is because the owner has started changing things that I think don't need to be changed. The salad, for instance, is now some grilled lettuce salad with tons of random toppings. Sometimes simple can be good, but I do think the unique dishes they come up with are a nice twist. read more

This is easily one of the better establishments in Butler -- a star of an eatery in the otherwise pretty downtrodden downtown area of Main St. Clean, well kept, inviting location with great food and service. She didn't seem all that busy but ran in and ran out like she had a hundred tables. We had to ask several times for a diet soda. Pot roast poutine was DELIGHTFUL! Best pot roast EVER. I had the cheeseburger soup. I want a fan but my husband loved it. I also ordered the large house salad with added brisket. Beware, the cherry tomatoes are cooked somehow and to me they taste like rotten tomatoes. I found out why they were cooked when I told the server, "I think these tomatoes are spoiled." As she was grabbing plates and running away, the server said, "they're cooked." The menu did NOT say they are roasted or whatever. The balsamic dressing was just a smidge too sweet; maybe go with the ranch. My hubby said his fried chicken salad was good. I thought the batter needed salt. The greens were crisp and fresh in both salads. As I write this, I'd like to order one of those amazing milkshakes but I don't think we'll see our server again. We may die here...stay tuned... Whew! She returned and we tried the Fluffer Nutter Butter milkshake and YUM! Didn't make everything perfect but it sure helped. read more

Had a really memorable lunch here a couple weeks ago when passing through. First off, they were VERY accommodating. When we asked if we could sit on the front covered patio area that closed so that we could keep an eye on our little dog in our truck parked out front, Lindsay greeted us and said "sure! In fact you can bring her in." How nice is that! Now, the food! It was obvious there is some real skill in their kitchen. My wife had the soup of the day, a cabbage and tomato, and it was unlike anything she'd ever had and was marvelous. She had a beautiful ribeye perfectly done (another accommodation because we were a little early for the official start of dinner service where steaks are offered) and she loved it. I had the Cobb salad topped with buttermilk fried chicken, a large beautiful salad with roasted cherry tomatoes and other very fresh usual Cobb ingredients. But the fried chicken elevated this salad to highly memorable, with the generous serving bursting with juiciness and flavor. When I go back I'm getting that chicken again in a sandwich or by itself. Amazing! So, we had the perfect lunch. What a pleasant surprise for a quick stop in an unfamiliar town. Lindsay was very friendly and chatted with us a bit while taking great care of us.
